Each province automatically generates farm income each year. The base income is set in the campaign startpos file, in the province SetAttributes:: line. The modified farming income for a province on any given year can be seen by opening up the economy scroll, and placing the cursor over the province in question. This will show a break out of the income by farming, mining, trade, and religious collections.

Modifiers

The base income will be modified by the province tax rate, governor/faction leader acumen, vices, and virtues, and provincial farming improvements.

Tax rate

The province tax rate will adjust the farm income collected by:

  • Very Low 75%
  • Low 90%
  • Normal 100%
  • High 110%
  • Very High 125%

Acumen

The faction leader's acumen will increase the farming income by 2% per feather. The governor's acumen will increase the farming income by 10% per feather.

Vices and Virtues

The vices and virtues of the faction leader and province governor can affect the farming income.

Improved Farmland

The Improved Farmland line of construction has 4 levels, which will cause the province to generate 120%, 140%, 160%, and 180% farm income respectively. The cost of these improvements, combined with the construction time, need to be taken into account before queuing them up in a particular province. If the farming in the province is poor, it may be quite some time before the improvement makes up it's cost and starts generating profit.

In the Viking Invasion campaign, base farming values are very low, and the farming improvements give larger percentage increases, but they are more expensive and take a very long time to complete.

The Return on Investment is the number of turns, starting when the money is spent and construction begins, that a farming improvement will start making profit. So the construction time as well as the construction cost is factored into these numbers. The number of turns is computed by taking (construction cost / 20% of the base income) + construction time. The Return on Investment is computed based on normal taxes, with no adjustments for acumen or VnVs, so the actual ROI time may be different based on game circumstances. Starting another improvement before recouping the cost of the previous will not affect these times, these costs are additive since each improvement only adds 20% of the base.
