Just forget about it. If she accepts the friend request sweet, if not then oh well.

I get this same kind of anxiety and lately I've been learning that I need to detach myself from the relationship and just let it go. I feel so much better when I do and the relationship I'm fretting over actually improves instead of falling apart like I used to fear. If the relationship does end then that's ok, it's not the end of the world. There's other girls out there for me to date and other people for me to get to know and I can't force someone to be in a relationship with me if they don't want to be.

we were never in a relationship: just friends.

but that was the conclusion I came to anyways: up to her to resume the friendship, or to not do so (as puzzled as I'd be). this is just a thought I had at the time.

anyways, more random thoughts I've had:

-I bet everything looks more epic with sacred war (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABby6nGIeHM) playing--especially war movies.

-maybe it is for the best not to sacrifice the sheep in honor of my first career job: too expensive to buy them.

-maybe I should just buy an Arabian to ride instead.

This. Arabian horses are awesome. A shame they are so fragile, the Netherlands isn't a good place to keep them, the grass is too nutricious so they have to remain inside. That's hell for a horse like that

thanks! though to be honest I got the job around the time I posted my first random thoughts (about slaughtering the sheep--really was thinking about it). it's not necessary, but sharing the bounty is good.

took a lot of legwork to find this one, but it pays well: this August I'm expected to rake in $5-6000. If I keep this up, I can pay off the personal school loans in about a year, And still have enough money to:

1-pay off my truck
2-save money (which I must invest, to keep the value of).

another year, and I'll have enough to fund graduate school on my own. see how many grad school departments will resist that offer...the only obstacle is making sure mom can pay her end of the bills safely. for this I must divert precious money, but it's worth it.

Yeah. Especially fixed points for rope arrows sucks harder than a black hole. Everything seems to resolve around how the developers want you to play, that sucks. I want huge levels I can aproach any way I want. And if they actually make blowing on the controler to put out torches I am going to grow a beard and join the Taliban. Seriously wtf? Graphics at least look ok, bit loud like all Unreal-tech based games but ok, nowhere near as good as the pics you posted earlier. I hate the word but this has consolitus written all over it. I decided I don't like my school anymore. I went to the first day of my math class yesterday and the room was completely full, I had to sit on a chair by the wall without any desk. Then they want me pay $40 for a parking sticker. They're planning on building a clock tower that the school doesn't need and will cost thousands of dollars. It makes me mad that they want to take every cent off of me that they possibly can and then build useless stuff that won't enhance my education.

Having an attractive campus is important, but I think my school's priorities are in the wrong order.

That is just a consequence of prolonged criticism from the public at large towards notions of being purposely obfuscating with jargon and being removed from reality in Ivory Towers.

That being said, I do believe there is value in things said by the ancients. I like the Epicureans and the Stoics and the ancient Skeptics I have read. What i don't like, is the very beginning of the "modern" philosophy and traditions with people like Descarte talking about demons tricking your eyes or whatever the garbage he spews to justify God's existence.

All too easily "common sense" is abused to force one's opinion through another one's throat.

I'm going to make a bold statement: common sense is an obstacle in philosophy and therefore has no place in it. It imposes a limit and as such becomes a roadblock to innovative and new ideas. Common sense stands in the way. And not only in philosophy.

I understand @asai (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/member.php?u=2326) about Descartes and some philosophers living in Ivory Towers, and to a certain degree, I concur, but Descartes' was groundbreaking in the sense that his ideas force you to be skeptical about everything, even about things you observe. He takes it to the extreme, which becomes a bit silly, but there is merit in it.

Perhaps it is nothing more than an impression, but I have the impression that in our modern day Western societies, people are not sceptical enough. Everything mainstream media throws at them, is accepted as fact and truth. Sure, you can say some of his ideas are silly, but we need more Descartes who learns us to distrust everything we observe to balance out the lack of scepticism and critical thinking in our societies.

We need more people arguing that perhaps oranges aren't orange to counterbalance the majority which questions nothing.

EDIT: it was ACIN who mentioned asai, which only shows Descartes was right: I shouldn't trust my senses.

If I had more time I would make more of an effort to discuss everything you said. But I am way to tired, so I will just ask one quick question.

If you believe that common sense has no place in philosophy, do you believe that our moral intuitions should be completely disregarded in the philosophy of ethics?

I have been using common sense has a substitute for asserting what appears to be obvious on a basic level of observation.

Common Sense is often abused as a description for "my opinion". Asserting that we all see the clock and can read the same time from it, is a common sense standpoint imo. There is a place for this kind of assertion and I feel it has its merits as well as the more subjective and skeptical views.

08-23-2013, 10:46
I think instead of using the phrase "Common Sense" you would want to be more specific in what kind of knowledge deficit the other person lacks, if you wanted to be all logical and stuff. For example instead of "Geez, of course that's not how it happened, don't you have any common sense?" you could say "Actually, I don't think the Dinosaurs landed on the moon. I'm pretty sure space explored them, not the other way around. Your lack of basic factual knowledge is staggering."

I agree. I was just borrowing the term from Monty who brought it up with his original post and adapted the definition I thought he was associating with it.

Andres
08-23-2013, 10:47
Common sense is a rather vague notion and in a lot of instances, people use it as denominator of what they think is the mainstream opinion of society or simply what they think is correct.

If you say that the clock shows that time, then it is not "common sense" to say that it's now x hours late. It's just that late. Besides, there are arguments contra. The clock could be inexact, in another part of the world, the time is not the same etc. Now, one could argue that it is "common sense" not to start a discussion about how late it is, since we all see the clock, but in a way, it's not common sense, but your opinion. You just say it's common sense to accept that what the clock says is the right time, because you're not interested in a discussion about time zones or about flaws in clock mechanisms that make them inexact. By using the notion "common sense", you avoid the dicussion and attempt to finish it. You stiffle the debate and make it impossible to have a discussion about better clock mechanisms or about time zones.

In the clock example, it can be defended that it would be silly to constantly doubt the time the clock is showing, but where do you draw the line? When is a discussion worth having and not worth having?

The most common answer to that last question, would probably be: use common sense.

If you go far enough however, you'll find out that everyone has a different opinion on what common sense is. If nobody fully agrees on what common sense is in all circumstances, than perhaps it's not so common.

Common sense doesn't exist and thus cannot be used as an argument.

Did a spur of the moment trip this weekend to visit a friend. Managed to get through a party where I literally did not know anybody. Probably was the most social I had ever been for about a year or two.

For some reason though, after the party I ended up not sleeping the entire night and barely got an hour and 30 min nap before I drove all the way back to my place. I'm still not sleepy or hungry. I think my brain doesn't know how to cope with large groups.

Being polite and kind is something people should take pleassure in. Whenever I go to the larger cities I don't know how fast I want to get out of there. Amsterdam is the worst but Utrecht deservers an honorary mention when it comes to rudeness. Is it so much to ask to greet the busdriver if you enter and leave, it's completily normal for me to do that. If an older person gets in you offer your seat. Not so much there.and there are bins for trash you are supposed to put it in it. Don't you feel like a an asocial pos if you just throw it on the street.

That's just the problem though Frags, they are following a formula. We are talking about art, not fast food. When you take a fast food approach to art, you get the crap Hollywood is turning out nowadays.
Meanwhile most indie movies either try way to hard to be different and artistic and miss the point entirely, or have way to small of budgets to be any good.
As far as music goes, I don't know what music you listen to, but when I turn on a Country music station I feel like smashing out my eardrums with an ice-pick. What the heck happened to the country music of the 90's and early 2000's? Now they think they just need to mention apple pie, drinking, trucks, or honkytonking to have their song counted as country music. There is no soul in modern music.
As far as video games go, look at Thief 4 and Deus Ex 3 and compare them to Deus Ex 1 and Thief I and II. There is no comparison. 90% of modern video games with the notable exception of simulators have been total garbage. The best game to come out in the last 3 years (DLC Quest) is a parody of how ridiculous modern video games are.

Yeah I'm with frags. The world is on media overload, if you sift through the crap there's plenty of gold.

Quantity is not quality. And sorry, but I don't think there is plenty of gold. If you search really, really hard and endure all kinds of disappointment you will stumble across the odd good movie, song, or video game, but nothing amazing like in the 1920's-early 2000's. Entertainment has stopped being art that makes a profit and has turned completely into a scientific, cold, calculated money milking system. Art has gone to hell.

It is a word I Websterized when I posted it. ~;)
It means trying to make yourself and your life as 'normal' as possible. Normal of course varies by culture and time, but in the 60's, 70's, and 80's normal became a dirty word and people strove to be as abnormal as they could. In the 90's normal temporarily stopped being an offensive concept and people began to normalize themselves and their lives a lot more. The fashions, literature, entertainment, etc, etc, began to drift a lot more toward our contemporary culture's concept of 'normal'.

Exactly. A language does not grow or adapt if people do not invent new words to explain concept that the language currently has no means of expressing.

Yes in a historical context you are right that's what he meant. But it has now taken on a more broad meaning to cover what you mean. Just goggle "return to normalcy"

I did a google search and all I found were references to the historical context and tv shows made about it. Why would I want to use a term with that much baggage that is tied down to such a specific definition of 'normal' when my point was broad expression? I believe my term is far more practical and robust, TYVM.

The opposite of necessary would be unnecessary or optional, no?

That's what they want you to believe.

Necessary is something that absolutely needs to happen. Unnecessary is something that can happen, but doesn't have to happen. More opposite to necessary, is forbidden, since that means it absolutely shouldn't happen.

I think it's not impossible, because impossible means that it's not possible for it to happen; but that's not really opposite to necessary, as necessary doesn't say something about the probability of something to happen, but more about how likely you want it to happen.

Necessary is more a subjective word.

Logical truths (including tautologies) are truths which are considered to be necessarily true. However, it is not universally agreed that there are any statements which are necessarily true.

Topped with pepper jack, american and cheddar cheese; pickles, red onions, lettuce, tomatoes and a southwestern spicy sauce. Was a little pricey $26 for 2 people, but it was worth it. Why is it so funny to me for a shopper in a grocery store to treat a woman in a wheelchair as a shopping cart full of groceries?

Actually it kinda is funny. Though it's the kind of funny you kinda feel bad for for finding it funny.

Edit, it's kinda hilarious by the way, I live in Amersfoort it's bloody village. We have gangs though, who look incredibly rediculous and should go to the circus, most hilarious was the motorclub 'no surrender', numerous were fined for speeding when the police was controlling speeding. Living the dream man, lol, it must have been incredibly hilarious to watch how they looked when they got a speeding ticket but gawd on a mother:daisy: plane it's too funny

They are from central Africa, 200 a 300 years old, it are ceremonial weapons that chiefs and shamaans used. Except for the axe that one is for fighting. Some have engravings (the ones that are standing vertically) nobody understands.

I just loved how a show could tackle so many different problems in society such as religion, drug use, the justice system, balance of power, terrorism, technological abuses, even abortion. And do it in a way that painted the world in such so many shades of grey, but never do it in a way which feels forced. Not to mention an awesome story (though not without some hiccups) with awesome acting (Katee Sackhoff and Edward James Olmos, among others, just did a fantastic job and extremely memorable). Not to mention kickass CGI work.

I kinda lost interest halfway season two, but season one was awesome. Reminds me of Homeworld, that sense of loss and space is HUGE vibe. I also love that actress that plays the president, incredibly charming woman.

Best show ever is Firefly by the way. I was really sad when it was over, you really start to love the character. Serenity was a nice icing on the cake, felt even sadder that this show was killed.

Short Story

Dear Diary,

As I walked down the shamefully-decrepit Main Street of a small rural town at about 2:10 AM in the morning last Wednesday, a young black man standing by a locked-down fish market on the opposite side of the road shouted across to me,

"Yo homey, wanna buy some fruit snacks to support my basketball team?"

(I say that he was young and black only by indirect inference, as he left no skin showing from beneath his cowl, or maybe it was one of those oversized athletic hoodies that the hip young ethnic folk like to wear these days.)

Though struck by the incongruity (and, dare I admit, slightly annoyed by the unwelcome solicitation), I continued along my path without many glances. I was quite startled to stumble into his frame full-on, as I had felt assured that there were no obstructions before me; furthermore, I had clearly just seen him standing at least 10 meters away. At any rate, before I could apologize or so much as regain my bearings (or balance), the interloper grated in a voice like the subduction of one-thousand eons with one-thousand mountains of sand,

"The Hive must be fed."

"Come again?", I squeaked in bemusement.

"Please submit your living flesh unto the Maw and relinquish your holy [unintelligible] in order that Bazalb-ti might grow", he said with that unpleasant tone, drawing out the last word into what seemed to me (I'm ashamed to admit) the orgasmic groan of some sort of squamous insectoid gorilla. One of his sleeves lifted up, and I perceived that he must have wanted to fist-bump me in order to seal the deal, but I still couldn't see any hand or arm supporting the sleeve, and anyway I could see up-close now that his outfit was so old, grimy, and worn-out that it had the rugosity of embalmed elephant skin. While I did genuinely lament the plight of this poor urban youth and his ilk at that moment, I wasn't really in the mood for any of this sort of crap and actually had a strong urge to do my toilet-business ASAP.

"Um, no thanks".

Having firmly but politely excused myself from the situation, I began shifting from one foot to the other as I judged how best to proceed around him while leaving ample space between us. Shockingly, he seemed to begin to mirror my movements, as though he imagined that he and I were engaging in a "dance-off". I squared my stance and prepared to comment, but the words caught as I opened my mouth. The man was trembling with increasing rapidity, and began to fear that he was having a fit. Giving forth a grunt of concern and reassurance, I reached out a steadying hand, but just then he was oscillating at such incredible frequency that I was forced back by a wave of air pressure, barely keeping myself upright.

As I regained my composure, I had my gaze fixed before me by an irresistible compulsion. Where the man had stood was now an amorphous smog-cloud the size of a watermelon, of such a quality as to briefly convince me that it was sucking the very light out of my eyes, of such a complete blackness that it could only be described as 'cosmic'.

"Be cool bro!", I yelped as I flashed improvised gang-signs at the presence, convinced that my time had finally come - this would be "my mugging". Suddenly, I was aware of a peculiar absence of ambient noise; even my heartbeat seemed to be stifled.

Yet with the passage of some short Tyme, forsooth did there be heard all about an most aweful Houling which of no tellural Beast hath euere ybeen heorde nauþer þæs ænig hæfdon bi Mannes geleofod. But then all the cacophony, which had formerly surrounded me and blasted me from within, seemed to be imbibed by the darkness, which was now writhing most hideously, and then this itself unravelled as though it were being sipped away by the starless sky - and it shot away from me and the world with unimaginable speed. I fancied that within a second I could track it traveling a hundred-million miles beyond Saturn (which seemed unusually stormy, though I can't say I would know).

Right then I realized that I was drawing many queer glances from passersby; during the excitement I had somehow come to be in the middle of a stairwell leading down into the metro, thereby creating an obstruction to my fellow citizens. With embarrassment I apologized and continued down into the station. Checking my wristwatch, I judged that, it being 6:36 PM in the evening, only a little more than a minute had passed since I first laid eyes on that young fellow. It did strike me as odd that no one else seemed to carry any evidence of perturbation on their countenance, though I personally felt that I had ended up making something of a scene. Ah well - that's the way this impersonal city life goes, I suppose!

The lesson I took from this experience is that black youth are just misunderstood, and really do have a lot of untapped potential. For instance, perseverance to pursue their enterprise late into the night. And I'm sure many of that young fellow's peers could learn from his alacrity - witness the speed with which he moved to detain me, a potential sale, at our initial contact. If black "dudes" moved so fast more frequently, they'd garner huge demand in the labor-pool! The one detrimental quality that I noted, which I have unfortunately seen evidenced in many other urban youth, was poor manners. Though he did remove himself from my presence as soon as I declined his pitch, I am in retrospect rather disappointed in the unmistakably-rude treatment he offered me during his decessio.

(Personal Note: Consider reporting to appropriate authorities the harassing and/or pranking communications that have been inflicted upon me by the Ku Klux Klan, in which they ask for one "Cho-zen Wun" to "sanctify the realm". It seems these hooligans are even targeting the Chinese now - how repugnant!)

What sort of degenerate brain could produce such dribblings? :laugh4:
