Sigh, horrible match I'd say. I guess that's what happens when the entire strategy is dependant on one player (zlatan). The beginning of the match was a disgrace also, like watching tree trunks trying to cover their respective areas by putting down roots rather than pressing enemy players or blocking passes, consequently giving Spain free reign far into our defence. Spain won that one fairly, still frustrating match to watch though, especially when the spanish team seemed to be far from their prime. It's as it allways is with Sweden and championships, coincidental goals, no drive, and and a long, slow but certain death.
The only thing left to do now is to hope for second place (not that the team on the whole deserves even that) in the group and to be beaten out of the competition by Holland like last time.

Yeah, good game. The Russian defense was soft as wet cardboard, but as expected these Greeks couldn't make a dent in it. And the Russian attack wasn't pretty, but it was sufficient. I liked their inventive attacks though, the use of the full field, they had great spirit! Oh, and poor, poor Pavlyuchenko who worked like a horse during the entire match and saw so many shots at goal end just short, just wide, just not good enough. But it could have been 5-0..Quote:

I haven't thought this long about match results before as for these two matches. I really don't know.
Portugal has got nothing to play for, and the Swiss will give it their best. But the difference in quality may be simply to great. Although any result seems quite possible.
Czech - Turkey could go either way as well, for any number of reasons.

Bloody hell, tomorrow is hard to say. This old fox still knows his game, but during a European Championship the Gods of football drink themselves into a stupor and no priestess is able to channel their will. Portugal will win, but probably in a lacklustre game (it takes two to make a good team tango). The Czechs will beat sturdy LENnistan, but barely, for somewhat similar reasons.

having trouble figuring out the portugal switzerland one mainly, on the one hand you have a weakend portugal team and a swiss team playing for pride but on the other hand you have some portugal players trying to earn a spot and a demoralised swiss team..... i think in the end the portuguese reverses will be well up for it and put in a good performance....

So I'm making steady progress up the table thanks to a few good predictions over the past couple of days; Grizzly's miles ahead though, and alas there are no England to lose on penalties and lose him all his points.
OK my choices for Monday:
Austria 1-3 Germany
Croatia 1-1 Poland
These final group games are tricky to predict, the presence of already-qualified teams is always a wildcard. Sometimes they rest their squad and field the reserves, but sometimes they use the confidence from winning the two opening games to get a clean sweep, which surely is a better omen for the knockout stages than losing your last game. I'm not sure which way Croatia will go, so I'm going to fence sit and say they have enough quality to put one past the Poles, but the Poles' extra drive will be enough for them to get one too. Meanwhile I predict Germany to bounce back from the Croatia game (they never seem to stay demoralized for long) and outclass the Austrians; they do look dangerously flimsy at the back though, so I predict Austria to put one past them. Thus, Croatia to win the group with Germany second; not a day for sure bets though.
I have a question though; anyone know of a team losing a meaningful group game going on to win the tournament?
Off the top of my head I would say Germany, German and Germany. Pick any major tournament of the last thirty years. Okay, they didn't go on to win most tournaments, but they would do very well toward the end.Quote:

Congrats to Turkey, fantastic of them to come back not just from 2-0 down today but from losing their opener, quarter final well deserved. Also nice for the Swiss to get something but always a little annoying for teams who are already through to play their reserves; I guess it would have been more annoying if the game had meant anything but I really feel it's not a good omen to be losing a game in the group stages. Even if it's meaningless I kind of expect tournament winners to have a mentality which would make them not willing to lose any games at all.
Well they always start slowly and pick up in the knockout stage, but it's been ages since they won anything. And let's face it, they are something of an anomaly in their ability never to get demoralized; be typical if they reach the final now after being so decisively destroyed by Croatia.Quote:

Well alright, it was the closest thing I could think of. We would need die-hard footballologues like Louis or LEN to pull out the relevant statistics. From memory again, I would say that the Germans only recover from their usual initial slump if they have one or two real stars who inspire the rest of the team to pull themselves up by their own hair. Everything hinges on what kind of team the Netherlands field, but I suspect they may field a weakened side and the Romanians certainly look potent enough to get at least one goal; I'm almost tempted to pick Romania to win but don't want to look too silly when Netherlands destroy them 6-0.
One of France or Italy has to step up and win if they are to go through, but unless one of them improves massively in the final game neither truly deserves to go through. It's going to be messy, and likely will hang on scrappy goals and controversial decisions. France look perhaps slightly better but also the shock of their comprehensive thrashing at the hands of the Dutch whirlwind is more fresh. Could go any way, but I'm picking a stalemate and elimination for both just because I feel Romania deserve it more for playing so tenaciously in such a tough group.
Not a day for sure bets, I really feel both games could go either way.
