Well alright, it was the closest thing I could think of. We would need die-hard footballologues like Louis or LEN to pull out the relevant statistics. From memory again, I would say that the Germans only recover from their usual initial slump if they have one or two real stars who inspire the rest of the team to pull themselves up by their own hair. As is the case with all teams (Maradona and Argentine, anyone?).
The last European Championship I watched was 1992. Germany had a silly opening game against the former USSR (1:0 thanks to Thomas Häßler in the last minute), an easy game against the demoralised Scots (2:0) and a nightmare game against the Dutch (1:3). But I believe Jürgen Klinsmann - solid, fair and a star with the panache of an artist - somehow pulled them through, and they made it to the final. Which they lost, granted. You can't win 'em all.
