By default, the board only offers options to globally change the time settings, ie everyone would see am/pm instead of the 24 hour clock. Could people chime in here whether they'd prefer to change to a 12 hour clock?

I like the 24 hour, it makes things easier when setting forum deadlines as a GM and the like.

That's a negative. I need to lower the flag at 2000 hours. having this boards say 8 is too confusing..

Seems a little strange that the software won't allow it to be user configurable. I imagine the DB keeps everything in standard GMT, options in the user settings include Time Zone, DST, and Start of Week, so each user already gets a customized timestamp for everything. Why not the 12/24 option? Weird.

It is odd. I was a little surprised, to be honest.

If you are interested, the time is actually stored in the database using the unix time stamp ie the number of seconds since 1 January 1970 UTC. Your post, for instance, is stored as 1303997735 (or Thursday 28 Apr 2011 13:35:35 GMT).

If you go to General Settings in your UserCP and scroll down to Date & Time Options you should find two new options. Here you can select your preference between European and US dates as well as between the 12 and 24 hour clock. Default should be the same as before, but let me know if there's any problems.

Has someone been playing with the default date format? I was almost sure it was always dd/mm/yy? It's now been changed to mm/dd/yy, which is utterly confusing for those of us from outside the US. I'm sure it wasn't set to to this before and there is also an option in the usercp to change it, which was set to US format, which I don't remember seeing before either?

I understand that yes, but when logged out, the default format is the US format which is a somewhat confusing change.

I honestly don't remember what the default was beforehand. I assume it was 24 hour clock and European date format, yes?

It's been european date format and a 24 hour clock as long as I've been here yes.

The new system, which allows logged in members to choose date and time settings, should only affect those who are logged in (I've double checked the code to be sure). So those who are not logged in should get the default vBulletin setting.

I've checked the database backup taken at the start of April to check what the setting was back then: it was m-d-y. If it has changed from d-m-y it was done at least a month ago.

I see no problem changing it to d-m-y if that's the majority view.

Choice is always a good thing, the default is the US date format which as I'm sure you agree some may find confusing... changing it is in fine if a majority clearly agree, but if not I'm happy to live with it.

It's weird that mm/dd/yy was the default... I must be getting old...

I find the US-style ordering confusing, yes. But surely it will be the same for people used to the US-style system if we switch?

Suggest to make the default depend on forum language setting if possible. So those who choose the English UK flavour get sane date formats, and those who choose English US get a random date something American instead.

It's a good idea, although I wonder how useful it would be: members who log in get to choose language, time and date settings, whereas I doubt many guests bother (or even know how) to change from US to UK English (the differences are minimal). Would probably be as well to just add time/date options next to the style/language selection for guests.

I was seeing this weekend that the date format was changed, I was seeing Euro-style, even though my settings said US-style. Switching to extended US and then back fixed it, but I think the initial setting/default is Euro for an account regardless. Just a heads-up.

Sorry, changed it when I though European was the default but forgot to change it back. Should be fine now.

I'm still pretty sure European format was the default for guests - I'm sure of this because I often read the board while logged out over the last few years - not logging unless I needed to post. TosaInu probably set it up like that - being a European, etc.
