Theoretically. However, I think they give you 200 points for each section if you do the basics like fill in your name, etc. meaning it would be from 600-2400.

-edit- Range for each individual section is 200-800, IIRC.

My condolences, Warman. That's not a fun experience to go through once, yet alone more often.

The SAT is a test where studying can really help you out...vocab is probably the easiest although I don't know if they test that as much as the used to. Doing timed practice exams can help you learn to pace yourself. Keep in mind the questions get harder as you go along. So if there's an obvious easy answer to question 2 go ahead and mark it, but if there's an obvious easy answer to question 24 it's probably a trick question

Dunno how the new ones are like, I took the old one the last year it was available I think. Friend of mine got 1600 on his SAT I and 800 on all 4 of his SAT IIs. Genius.

    I got 1340 on my SAT I.

My advice? Get the SAT book from collegeboard and do all the questions and find patterns (back then, they never had more than 4 in a row of the same answer for instance)

As far as the new ones go, they added an essay and scrapped the analogies. You probably would have scored somewhere in the 2000-2100 range.

Don't worry, second time almost always gives a higher score. Just remember to get those various study aide books and go through them. They really do help

You have to do an essay section now? I pity the younger generation.

well here we don't have to make essays... so I guess that helps

we only do the critical reading and math (1600 total points)

I did mine last Saturday... but I've been to busy to pick up my results, I think it will have to be tomorrow...

I need from 1320 up in order to get em... economic finance? (where I don't need to pay the 100% of the cost)

I think I'll do it fine, I'll tell ya tomorrow shall we

If they still do it like they did in my day, wrong answers count negative. If you fill in your name and do nothing else, you get 200. If you fill in your name and then get every answer wrong, you get a zero.

Pretty sure that's how it worked.

    It still works that way.

Not sure if I mentioned this in the other thread but it just occurred to me.

Where is the logic in penalising students for getting a question wrong? You lose 1/2 a mark or something per incorrect answer and I think I tried to answer every question on mine, even when I was only half-certain.

There's a penalty for wrong answers so that there isn't a reward for blind guessing.

Well, the penalty is only 1/4 of a point.

So, since there are only 5 choices, all you need to do is eliminate one of them, which should be pretty easy, to be able to break even in terms of points. If you can eliminate 2 or more, you will have an advantage and on average, you'll score better by guessing than by not

I took the ACT instead. Got a 30, which translates to being roughly a 1980 or so. However, it is probably wise to disregard all of the following advice, as I apparently am just an innately good test taker or something.

    1) Don't study.

    2) Don't think about it until the morning you're set to take it.

    3) Since it's the SAT instead of ACT, don't guess if you have no idea. If you can narrow the options down to 2, however, guess away with what seems logical.

I haven't read the rest of the thread (yet).

But I can think of a good reason generally. With multiple choice it would discourage guessing (where you could pick up another 1/4 or so of the marks).

In specific cases it is probably a very good idea to have negative marking. Where-ever mistakes costs lives so abseiling, medicine, flying would all be good exams to have negative marking.
