    Default Never Forget

There, but for the grace of God, goes John Bradford

My aim, then, was to whip the rebels, to humble their pride, to follow them to their inmost recesses, and make them fear and dread us. Fear is the beginning of wisdom.

I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation.

I don't understand. Is this thread about how the Okie Indians and Kinky Friedman saved Texas from being overcome by the great brown threat? Or is it a bowl game reference?

I thought the point was how Texas was once a nation state or sumfink like that.
The second picture would then just be symbolical for the pride of the Texans for preserving themselves and being such strong people.

Or maybe it's a reminder about the greatness of the nation of Mexico Aztlan.

Cool store, bro! I want some ham.
    No ham, pepsi.
They make deli slices of frozen pepsi now? Awesome!
You also need to purchase a small freezer for storage of your pepsi.
It runs on batteries. You'll need a few.
Uhh, I guess I won't have pepsi then. Do you have change for a twenty?

It is the very basic emotion of insecurity, Fragony.

Texas is The United States version of Germany, you know, that odd cousin showing up at family dinners, but who you have very little in common with, and do not want to be associated with.

One of the main reasons behind this insecurity shown among texans is of course the cult of masculinity.

Cowboys, in the old days, often heerded their cattle south. They went months and months without seeing a woman. It is thus natural that only the men who could adapt to an enviroment where women were replaced by cows and other men, made it all the way down to Texas.

This then became a safe haven for this kind of people, and you can still see a lot of men there still proudly wearing their cowboy hats, a hidden signal to other people of their kind.

I think people who feel the need to insinuate others are latent homosexuals are the truly insecure. Who's the person who goes around with flags to represent his 'conquests' after all?

    That's a sign of insecurity.

I like the Texan philosophy that Texas is awesome/amazing, it gets annoying for me how it seems very few other states have actual pride for their state government, and proceed to not a give a crap about anything except the presidential election. Maybe if Californians had more respect for their state we would not have DGAF'd on our state elections and let the state get into billions of dollars of debt.

So what part is it that we should never forget?

    The Olympics in Mexico City?

The fact that the Republic of Texas claimed about 10 times more land than it actually controlled?

Each time they tried to exert their claims they ended in disaster.

Point of Order: it's more complicated than just the Cal citizenry didn't care. It's that + badly-crafted Initiatives (with great intentions, but no funding sources), a hopelessly partisan (and therefore useless) Assembly who, failing in their own jobs, pass the decisions onto the voters via those badly-written Initiatives, that get passed by a simple majority of voters who managed to show up at the polls that day.

We (California) are in dire need of a Constitutional Convention, to re-craft how Cali Law is made.

As a footnote, I point out that California was also an Independent Republic for awhile; for a total of about 21 days. Somebody thought it'd be a good idea to get a US sailor-boy to hoist the Stars and Stripes near Sacramento - bam! we became a colony of the US, and later, a State. One can only wonder what life might be like in the Republic of Califia.

    Yep!

The California Republic, declared by 33 men, likely drunk, likely US soldiers, at the very least filibusters.

But it worked. It never would have made an actual Republic. Mexico would have crushed the revolt just as the first Texas rebellion in 1830 was crushed.

It was an age of filibusters and most didn’t work too well.

I was going to correct your use of "filibuster", until I looked it up:

The term filibuster was first used in 1851. It was derived from the Spanish filibustero meaning pirate or freebooter. This term had evolved from the French word flibustier, which itself evolved from the Dutch vrijbuiter (freebooter). This term was applied at the time to American adventurers, mostly from Southern states, who sought to overthrow the governments of Central American states, and was transferred to the users of the filibuster, seen as a tactic for pirating or hijacking debate
You taught me something today. Thanks.

You should have maintained your independence until now. Then you could offer to join the Union in return for the US bailing out your incompetent government and massive debts.

Yeah. Or declare war on the US over water rights, then surrender when the first shots get fired, and get foreign aid for 50 years.
