The thing that struck me about the video was how many (big) drops it took before the Macbook started to show damage - at least on the outside. I think that if my wife's Dell went through that exercise, it would have been in pieces on the first drop.

Those haters are from the Norwegian public broadcasting - I hope no license money was hurt in the creation of that video.

    the outside looks sturdy....yes...

but I would say that no laptop, of any brand, would actually work after taking that first spill down the stairs.

That's got to be the story of the school spying on it's victims pupils using laptop webcams. Outrageous.

I am perplexed. Not that this spying thing happens; I mean it's been coming the USA for a loooooong time with an unhealthy "if you would not do anything wrong you would not care about your privacy" attitude (one that is apparently prevalent in the UK as well). But did that school basically say "okay, here you have a shiny laptop: go and use it as you see fit" or did it say "here you can borrow one of the school laptops to do homework on"??? Either way seems awfully irresponsible spending of a school budget.

    A German Love Story:
Man Breaks into Jail for Sex with Girlfriend

Updated: Monday, 22 Feb 2010, 7:42 AM EST
    Published : Monday, 22 Feb 2010, 7:36 AM EST

(The Sun) - A horny German man who broke into jail at night for sex romps with his imprisoned girlfriend faces a stretch behind bars himself, The Sun reported Monday.

Daniele Eberhardt, 33, was arrested after other female prisoners complained that he and his unnamed lover's "grunts and groans" kept them awake at night and made them feel "frustrated."

"It was like a bad porno movie," one inmate said.

Eberhardt climbed up a ten foot fence, evaded surveillance cameras and used a skeleton key to get in the jail in the city of Bielefeld, northern Germany.

Prosecutors said he will go on trial for trespassing next month.

Guess how much the top earners in America are taxed?

    http://www.taxanalysts.com/www/featu...7?OpenDocument

Yeah, that's right. 16%. Meanwhile our education system is crap and 45,000 people a year die from inadequate medical care, and the people who should be mad about this - the poor - are defending it. Wlecome to America, I guess.

Oh to live in America. Over here, if you are of Dutch nationality, you end up at a whopping 52% but that includes other benefits (and the first €2700 or so are tax-free) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Income_...he_Netherlands Also: those forms get pretty complex quickly.

A fine show of the art of drunken climbing.
A NIGHT of drunken skylarking has left a Ukrainian tourist with a hangover he will always remember - and taxpayers with a huge bill.

After a night on the drink, the 19-year-old man scaled down a cliff at Sydney's northern beaches suburb of Manly but got stuck half way and passed out, The Daily Telegraph reports.

After being alerted by a fisherman, rescue workers found him asleep on his back on a ledge 30m above sea level at North Head early yesterday morning.

The rescue operation will cost taxpayers at least $10,000.

But the man will only be charged the cost of the road trip to hospital - likely to be as little as $700.

Garth Thomson, who repeatedly shook the man's leg to wake him up so he could be winched to safety, said he had not seen anything like it in his 15-year ambulance career.
I'm not sure a rescue was needed. He got pretty far drunk, he probably could have made it to the bottom hungover.

Spoilered response so as not to politicize NotW.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    That's a bit misleading.

Right now the top 1% of taxpayers pay 40% of all Federal income taxes (a percentage that went up in the Bush years).

These 400 households only have a low effective rate because the capital gains tax is relatively low compared to income tax, and apparently they made most of their money from capital gains.

Enough with the tax talk! Go get a room make your own thread!

Meanwhile, big scandal, hot star caught sucking off neighbor!

[R]esearchers have spotted [an exoplanet similar to Jupiter] that's so close and so hot that its host star has distorted its atmosphere into the shape of an American football and is gradually sucking it off the planet.

The planet was the 12th found by the Wide Angle Search for Planets project, and it's got some pretty unusual stats: 1.4 times Jupiter's mass, an orbital period of just over a day, and a distance from its host star's surface of only about three times the radius of the star itself. But the real surprise is that WASP-12b has a radius that's roughly 1.8 times that of Jupiter. It's close enough to its host star to get hot, but not that hot.

The authors apparently considered alternative sources of heat, and focused on the tidal forces that arise given its proximity to the host star. They calculated that, assuming properties similar to Jupiter, the tidal heating of WASP-12b would be strong enough to "drive ongoing envelope expansion." In other words, the atmosphere would blow up like a balloon. Thanks to the gravitational pull of the star, it wouldn't be spherical though; in the accompanying press material, comparisons were made to the balls used in rugby or US football.

In fact, the gravity would be so intense that the atmosphere would expand past the Lagrange point on the side closest to the star, allowing it to be sucked away from the planet.
