Resources

There are 5 mineral resources defined in the Medieval:Total War and Viking Invasion campaigns. These are Gold, Silver, Copper, Salt, and Iron.

Mines

In provinces with Gold, Silver, Copper, or Salt, mines and mine complexes can be built to extract these minerals for money. These mines are solid income producers, and should be built whenever possible. The cost of a mine/mine complex depends on the type of mineral being mined, but they all scale roughly the same. Mines will recoup their costs within ~10 turns, while mine complexes will recoup their cost within ~18 turns. Given a choice, priority should be given to Gold and Silver mines, as these turn greater profits overall than Copper and Salt.

Iron

Provinces with Iron are special. Iron is not mined for cash, but used for improving troops. In the MTW campaign, Iron is necessary to build the Metalsmith line of building, which improves the melee attack of units built in the province. In the Viking Invasion campaign, Iron is necessary for both the Metalsmith and Armourer line of buildings. Provinces with Iron should be slated for full time military production to take advantage of these bonuses.
