View Full Version : Mafia VIII: Return of the Recommencement of the Revenge of the Mafia [Concluded]

(can you tell I'm running out of title ideas?)
Welcome to Mafia VIII!
Before there was Midgard...
Before there was the Netherworld...
Before there was Capo...
...there was the Frontroom.
Introduction:
Mafia VIII, like the rest of the series that began the noble .Org experiment, takes place in the Frontroom, where the games were originally held before this subforum was created. It is Mafia at its most basic, with only two roles: Mafia and Detective. There are no serial killers, no vigilantes, no doctors, no third-party roles or extra victory conditions of any kind. It is simply Mafia vs. Town.
Roles:
Mafiosi (2):
The bad guys. It is the town's job to find them and lynch them. Each mafioso gets one kill per night, and when there's only one left, the survivor gets two kills per night.
For the slow, this means that there will be two kills every night phase. And if you're targeted, well... sorry. :embarassed: At least there was a good reason for it.
The mafia have some say in how little/much they write in their kill descriptions. It's up to the town to figure out how much is their work and how much is mine.
Detective (1):
The town's ace in the hole. The Detective investigates one townie per night and gets detailed, un-opaque (is that even a word?) results. The Detective is advised to send in his investigations early in the night phase, for if the mafia decide to kill him that night and he already has his results in, I will give him a chance to reveal in the thread before he is whacked. If not, you die without results.
The Detective cannot reveal once dead and can only reveal publicly - i.e. no private reveals to the innocents. Don't try to get around this loophole either by posting code in your signature or editing an earlier, obscure post for five minutes or however. That's not part of the spirit of the game.
Game procedure:
The game starts with a night phase. Here, the power roles send me their actions. This means two people will die before they even get the chance to cast one vote. Sorry, but it works better for the story that way. After that, it's day, where the alive townies can vote and try to lynch the mafia. Voting procedure is the usual, i.e.:
Vote: GeneralHankerchief
If you wish to unvote, then do so as follows:
Unvote: TosaInu
Vote: GeneralHankerchief
Unvoting without saying who exactly is being unvoted (i.e. Unvote) is highly discouraged and if it ticks me off enough I might start handing out WoGs.
Voting abstain (you are present for the round and have no lynch preference) is allowed, but "No Lynch" is not. Additionally, after a certain amount of rounds, usually when I deem it to be endgame, "Abstain" will no longer be allowed, meaning you must vote to lynch someone. I will let you know in the thread once this threshold has been crossed.
Rules:
I try to run a tight ship. This style of game is very low-maintenance for the host and I'd rather spend my time writing descriptions and tallying votes than dealing with violations.
First of all, inactivity will be dealt with by the customary Wrath of God. There is no set amount of inactivity that will get you Wogged, but if you don't post in the thread at all for a long period of time, you're gone.
Screenshots are not allowed, I don't care if it's incriminating or not. Anything else that can be faked, including but not limited to: PMs, .Org chat logs, off-site chat logs, etc. are fair game, so go crazy. Note: Once dead, none of this applies and you cannot quote anything not said in the public thread at all.
I have very little tolerance for rule-breakers. It's pretty hard to mess things up in this game and I hope it stays that way. Violators will be dealt with ruthlessly, in the style of the game's Chief of Police.
Other:
There may or may not be a twist, depending on the amount of players I get. All will be revealed in due time.
Finally, the most important rule of all: HAVE FUN!!!
I'm hoping to get as many people as I can in sign-ups. They'll be open for a few days as I have a busy week.

Point taken. No aspersions intended. Maybe "Mafia Unplugged" better expresses the idea. More of a pure PSYOP game, with few plot bells and role whistles; empasis on casting, avoiding, and fixing suspicion.

Day breaks in the Frontroom. All is quiet. It was another beautiful day in the tranquil Kingdom of Peace and Love. With the sun just starting to rise, nature was displayed in all of its majesty, with little to disturb the golden rays from inching upon the soft dew of the grass, the multicolored birds from arising and beginning their daily symphony, the-
BLAM!
Startled, the birds flew away, one of them depositing their droppings on the Chief of Police's car.
A morning jogger by the name of Tratorix was down on the ground in an alleyway as part of a shortcut he had taken on the way home. He had tripped to a loose shoelace. Upon tying his shoe, he got up and promptly sat down in surprise at what he had seen.
A man, dressed in a trenchcoat and gray fedora, was looking down at Tratorix and pleasantly smiling.
"Delightful morning, isn't it," he asked. Tratorix, still in shock, especially at the man's impeccable dress at this hour, did not respond. The well-dressed man went on. "Of course, those birds are a bit annoying... Anyway, it's a shame it'll be your last." The single shot went off, unnaturally loudly, setting the birds off. Tratorix crumpled, never to jog again.
Three hours later, Omanes Alexandropolites woke up and looked around groggily, searching for his clock. It felt late. Finally finding the clock and confirming the time, he realized that it was late. The birds were supposed to wake him up.
"I wonder where they went," he wondered out loud. Bah, never mind. It was time to get on with his (abbreviated) morning routine.
"Skip breakfast or shower?" he asked. He considered both possibilities. Omanes was of the firm belief that breakfast was the most important meal of the day, and did his best to sit down and see the day in right every day. Of course, showering was important as well. A person with good hygiene was a person with good health, after all.
Eventually he decided to skip breakfast, opting instead for the shower. After all, he would suffer by going hungry, but if he didn't take a shower then everybody else would suffer by having to smell his reek. After getting into his bathrobe, Omanes opened the curtain to his shower.
"You chose wrong," said a man, fully-dressed, pumping a shotgun and evidently waiting for him. A second later Omanes was gone.
"Looks like the bathroom's gonna need to be cleaned again," the man remarked as he left without looking back.
Later that day, Chief of Police Beirut had all of the townspeople gathered in the Frontroom Square to make an announcement.
"Gentlemen," he began, "at approximately 6:08 this morning Tratorix was brutally murdered by a single shot to the head. As a result of this crime the birds in the area, startled, all flew away, ONE OF THEM SOILING MY CAR. Were it not for the gunshot, it still would have been clean! This is unacceptable. I want you all to find who fired that shot and lynch him!"
"Uh," someone in the audience said, what about finding who killed Tratorix? I think Omanes is dead, too, should we do anything about that?"
"Yes... of, uh, course..." Beirut stammered, clearly forgetting about the two murders when compared with the magnitude of his car being used for target practice. "Right, well, it's probably the work of the mafia, and as everybody knows, cops can't do anything about the mafia, so it's up to you guys to find the perps who killed Tratorix, murdered Omanes, and made my car dirty, and lynch them. This will be done democratically, so get to it!"

So there is no point in lynching you nor is there a point in you being alive because you are supposedly going to active either way. But if you are town it is benefital if you stay alive and vote out the mafia, so what is the point of voting yourself?

It is the ultimate beauty of my plan. If I vote for myself, it proves I am not mafia. If I don't get lynched, then people will know that they can trust me, and I can be more useful. If I do get lynched, then I will still help the town. I win if the town wins, so my life is unimportant. We are unlikely to find a mafia on the first lynch. Someone needs to "take one for the team". Might as well be me.
So I am either telling the truth or I am pulling the WIFOM of all WIFOM's.

Well it's only my 3rd game. And it's my first as a townie. First game I was mafia, second I was power-town, now I am town. It is an odd sort of freedom. It truly does not matter if I die in turn 1. Can you imagine any mafia trying this when there are only 2 in the whole game? Doing what I am doing would force them to halve their numbers. While they could still make 2 kills, the second guy basically exists to "soak" a lynch for the other guy. If I was mafia, I would be denying my partner a "soak" in order to gain the ability to infiltrate as a dead townie. While I have not played many of these games, it seems having the "soak" is far more useful than having a "dead townie" infiltrator.
So, I am either telling the truth or pulling a gigantic WIFOM.

This is becoming a bit of a tradition - in the two GH games I've played, I've been killed first round. Shame really, but then again, I suppose being dead let's you be extremely outspoken and get away with it.
So far I haven't really picked up on much beyond FactionHeir. Using a killing strategy to result in the location of good lynches is a mafia tactic. One thing I have found in the past, when I have used the tactic, is that the town often need a little nudge to act on it. FactionHeir's stating that both the people killed are lurkers, could be that hint.
I'm probably just waffling here, ignore me if I am, but that's just who I'd vote for at this early stage if I could.

Im getting a flashback from andres game here, i could swear you used that exact same line... its less influential second time round
Im really not sure what to do here, i have been in the situation twice where an opportunity to lynch sasaki has come and twice i thought im not just going to vote for a reputation, twice i was wrong and should have voted for sasaki (though in Capo he wasn't mafia when the opportunity came and he didn't win)
I figure there is only 1/14.5 chance of him being mafia which is a very slim chance, but after being burnt twice i can't let it happen again, i think i would have more trust in PK further down the line so i guess it isn't just a kill sasaki vote....

I think I am the only person who voted for me who did not bandwagon.
There is pretty much never any legitimate reason to vote for someone on the first day. Therefore bandwagoning on Day 1 is as acceptable a reason as any other. We're picking randomly, so no selection is empirically better or worse than the rest. Ideally, the best thing to do would be to not lynch anyone, but the rules pretty much never allow for that.
It's absurd to expect anyone to think you're innocent on Day 1 alone just based on your public posting strategy. Your attempts to make your joke seem like legitimate proof of innocence actually tends to do the opposite for me.

It's Sasaki 10 - 9 PK
I'd kind of like both to be lynched. Ah well, good turnout of voters ~:)
Are we seriously discussing the validity of somebody's reasoning for voting himself?
*sigh*
Of course PK is joking and of course his nonsensical reasoning doesn't clear him nor does it make him guilty.
Why are you guys so serious about this?
There is pretty much never any legitimate reason to vote for someone on the first day. Therefore bandwagoning on Day 1 is as acceptable a reason as any other. We're picking randomly, so no selection is empirically better or worse than the rest. Ideally, the best thing to do would be to not lynch anyone, but the rules pretty much never allow for that.
The picking of a lynch target on day 1 is in fact indeed pretty much ad random.
But that doesn't mean that day 1 isn't as good a day to find mafia as any other day. The more discussion we have, the more posts and the more points of view we have and the more material we can analyse.
Bandwagoning, is not an acceptable reason for voting somebody. Also, if we place 10+ votes on one particular player, the mafiosi won't join the discussion or will simply jump on the bandwagon, making jokes like all the rest of us.
If we keep 2 or 3 votes on e.g. 8 or so players, combined with some vote switching instead however, then more players run a real risk of getting lynched. A mafioso tied with 5 players having two votes while one other player has 3 votes will feel pressure and might start to talk and make a slip-up.
We won't get useful material on Day 1 with 10 or more votes without reason on one particular player
EDIT: or two particular players for that matter. Now we are focusing on 2 out of 38 suspects and we're letting 36 others of the hook...

Andres, you're right.
unvote: Sasaki, vote: Andres
~;)
I understand your point, Andres, and agree to a certain extent. However, I have never found Day 1 comments to be of much use in finding mafia. Since truly random and joke votes are acceptable, there is really no way for a mafioso to look suspicious on the first vote unless they make an absurd error. 2 votes each on 15 different people would not give me any more information than the current double-bandwagons, simply because we accept a complete lack of reasoning as acceptable on any vote. Every time I've tried to find something of value in Day 1 comments, I've failed or been completely wrong. That's not to say that I ignore them, but it certainly limits the utility of the analysis. On Day 1, I think I actually do more harm by analyzing the posts too much than I do by voting randomly or without reason.

It's absurd to expect anyone to think you're innocent on Day 1 alone just based on your public posting strategy. Your attempts to make your joke seem like legitimate proof of innocence actually tends to do the opposite for me.
It's absurd to think I expect it either. But with so little to go on, I hope my display helps prove my innocence regardless of the outcome. If I live, I might have a little "innocence cred". If I get lynched, I might have a little "innocence cred". Either way, I will help the town.
You better than anyone know I will not sit idle as a dead townie. :beam:

PK, you're missing a very obvious point here. If you guarantee to be helpful to the town as a dead townie, you guarantee that there's no reason not to lynch you. If you're mafioso, we kill you and it's good for us. If you're townie, then we kill you and it doesn't change your ability to help. That's far better than killing a townie who will then disappear and not help us look for mafioso. You're actually making yourself an ideal first round lynch target. While that's good for the town in this game, it's a pretty bad personal strategy because it will make it easier to tell when you've got a role in other games.

Sigurd made himself suspicious in round 1 in Star Wars mafia and was eventually lynched because of his behaviour in round 1 and the pressure put on him round 2...

That is exactly the argument I am making. (But I think you said it better)
I have not tried to save myself from this lynch. Quite the opposite.
As for personal strategy, I can always act different in future games. This is my first time as a townie and I want to try this strategy out. If it doesn't work, I'll simply not do it again.
For me, trying different posting strategies is part of the fun. :beam:

They often are very useful. But the point is if you just bandwagon carelessly then the game hasn't really started. It doesn't start until people make cases seriously. Tomorrow will still be day 1.

Just a mild gut feeling based on his one post. Which is, in all probability, wrong... but I don't see anything better at this point.

lol my maths is a bit off today, i was thinking 39 players in total (but thats including me twice) i was including the 2 dead players, one of them could have been mafia, so yeah 1 in 18 chance pretty much assuming the 2 killed were townies...
Why would mafia kill mafia?
Logic wins again :smash:

Someone mentioned something about his first post being a "nudge" of sorts. I remember using this technique in Mafia VII.
My way too early prediction is that FactionHeir and Craterus are the mafia.
Also, the bandwagons on Sasaki and PK are just silly. Let's have both sides unvote and spread some votes around. A sort of mafia detente if you will.

Chief of Police Beirut looked out over the town square from the newly-constructed execution platform and swelled with pride. His charges, the villagers of the Frontroom, were doing their civic duty and voting! Granted, it was to horribly execute the person that had killed two of their own, but nonetheless they were voting. Beirut was so proud of them.
He walked down, off the platform, and towards the townspeople, hoping to catch snippets of their deliberations and glean valuable information towards every individual's psyche.
"Vote for me, it means I'm innocent!"
"I'm voting for him because it's tradition!"
Tradition? Beirut thought. That was weird... surely, none of them had ever done this before...
Well, at least they were voting, he supposed.
Eventually, all the discussion wore down, votes were cast, and Beirut, back atop the execution platform, called for order.
"Gentlemen," he began, "It is time to enforce your decision. Privateerkev, as per your... er... wishes, you will hereby and immediately be executed."
Privateerkev eagerly bounded up the platform, clapping his hands again and again and overall, looking like a small, hyperactive child who had a $100 gift certificate to the candy store. "Oh, goody!" he shouted over the crowd, "I can't wait to start! How'm I going to get executed? Hanging? Electric chair? Sharks with frickin' lasers?"
"Nope," Beirut replied incredulously. "To send a message to the mafia, your tongue will be removed and you will be buried alive with approximately 27 rather large tarantulas to keep you company." He pulled a rope and next to the execution platform, a sand pit and a large wooden crate with the words "DO NOT OPEN" stamped on it were revealed.
The color quickly drained out of PK's face and the world record for "fastest, most drastic facial expression change" was shattered.
"If you'll hold still, please," Beirut said, brandishing a large, rusty knife. "Open wide!"
Privateerkev started screaming at the top of his lungs and didn't stop until there was no more air to enter his lungs, some thirty horrible minutes later. Every single townsperson could hear him even through the large amount of sand placed over his and the tarantulas' bodies.
"Just a reminder, if you're a mafioso, the same fate or worse awaits you, Beirut said cheerily. If you'd like to confess now, then I can arrange a quick, humane execution instead."
Silence.
"No? Well then, go home everybody and hope you did your jobs."
