The Midgard Saga II

https://i6.photobucket.com/albums/y230/asleka/futhark.jpg

Welcome to the sequel of Midgard saga.

This game will be similar and will have most of the features of the previous game; however some of the fun of the previous game, I suspect, came from not fully knowing all the little twists and turns of the game. Therefore this game will incorporate new twists and turns to try to make this game as fun as the previous.

The setting is not ancient Norway as it was last time. This time we find ourselves on Iceland, the centre of the Norse world.

The Kings and Jarls of the Norse world with their retinue are gathered at Alþing to settle a dispute between King Harald Bluetooth of Denmark and Haakon Jarl of Norway. Harald hired an army from Jomsborg to crush Haakon, but the mighty Joms were beaten. The captain of Jomsborg is also at this þing, wanting to regain any lost stature with the Norse Kings.

A few Jotun has infiltrated the entourage and will try to kill all the lords at this gathering hoping to throw the Viking world into a chaos of war and maybe instigate Ragnarok.

The Roles:

Lords – this will be the Kings and Jarls from the Norse world
Jotun (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/J%C3%B6tunn) – the Mafiosi
Pro-town roles
Townies (various roles in the retinue of the lords)

The Jotuns main object is to kill the Lords + the pro-town roles. If they are able to do so they will win.

The Rules:

Dead may post but not vote.
No screenshots of my pms … You might try to claim a role by either quoting pms or making one up. There will be no standard roles in this game, hence claiming to be a detective or a doctor is a clear lie. All roles are within the Norse realm.
It is not allowed to reveal your role if you are dead, you can however reveal your role at any time whilst being alive (do so at your own risk).
Any rule-breaking will result in the game host giving the other side a slight advantage.
Remember to stay active; the roles depend on you being active and WoGs will create advantages to the Jotun. Jotun will never be WoG’ed.
WoG will happen for the town if a player do not post anything in the space of 2 rounds without cause or do not vote in 3 consecutive votes. If you need to be away for more than 4 days, the equivalent of 2 rounds, contact the game host.
Roles that require sending pms will do so at their discretion. However there will be a deadline. If they get sent in after that deadline they will not be used for that round.
The timer starts when I post my: “The game has started”. I will send my pms and you will return pms if you role requires it. In short; you have 24 hours to pm me after I start the game. This will give you plenty of time to get to know your in-game buddies/allies and devise a strategy.
There will be a 24 hour session between every intermission. i.e. between the posting of the night kills and the posting of the lynching and then again until the next kill post.

Voting: use the standard. I.e.

Vote: Sigurd
Unvote: Sigurd Vote: Sasaki.

Do not edit posts containing votes. I might punish players doing so by reducing their Holmgang abilities.
There will be absolute deadlines for votes.
There will be a strict regime when it comes to votes. Votes that fail to adhere to the rules described above will not be considered.

Holmgang: (passage of arms, lit.transl: walk the islet)
After every lynching and in the intermission before the next night, you have the opportunity to challenge another player to a duel. The first Holmgang will be conducted after the first killings and the first lynching.
There will be some sore feelings after the lynching since someone’s cook or serf man got executed. Others might gloat and smirk. This will generate a little disturbance at Alþing and the normal way of settling this is by Holmgang. If you want to challenge another player, the procedure is:

Challenge: Sigurd.

The first 6 challenges will be considered and by the randomness of random.org one will be picked.
Players can not spam challenge. Only one challenge pr. player will be added to the list of possible Holmgangs (usually the first).
Challenges are binding and you can’t unchallange.
This Holmgang will be narrated with the kills the following night.
One of the combatants will usually die.
Every role will get a Holmgang ability that will determine the outcome of such a duel.
There is still luck involved in the form of random.org and a player with low abilities might be able to get in a lucky shot against a player with higher abilities. On a rare occasion there might be a tie. If such is the case both will survive.
You will not be able to conduct two Holmgang in succession. You will lose some blood during such a duel and you will need to rest during the next Holmgang session. Luckily you all suffer from Viking sickness and will recover quickly. No honourable Viking will challenge a player in his resting. If someone does – that challenge will not be considered.

This is the preliminary information.
Any further info will be by pm when the roles are handed out. All players will receive a role.

The game will start on Friday 8th of August 2008 at 20:00 GMT. This will be the deadline for signups.
Every member of .org are invited to play.

For those that do not know what this is all about here is the first game: Midgard Saga (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=78686).

This game will not start until Omanes' The Brothel game is over. We are looking at Friday 8th of August at 20:00 GMT

You may post your interest in joining this game here.
I would like to have as many participants as possible and the balance of the game will be determined by the the number of participants. Last time there were 32 players and it worked well.

Check your calenders people and join if you have the time.

Alright people, the game will definitely start Friday the 8th of August 2008, in other words in about a week.
Andres has put up the final effort to recruit players.

Sign up deadline will be at 20:00 GMT on the 8th of August (you should all have the World Clock at the bottom of your browsers) and I will start the intricate process of assigning roles.
I will have all prepared until then so it will just be a few minutes of execution and then a few pm's to hand out.

The game will start with a night time that lasts 24 hours. This will be sufficient for the players to acquaint themselves with their roles and make plans and strategies with their role buddies if they have any.

27 players have signed up so far and I hope they are all ready to PLAY Midgard saga !!!!
I still want more players, and more the merrier. :smartass2:

This Sir, is a version of the popular party game Mafia. First introduced here as a online forum version by GeneralHankerchief.

The game is about the informed minority against the uninformed majority and the two groups trying to annihilate each other. The informed minority kills players during a phase of the game called night and the uninformed majority lynches one player during a phase called day.
Since the uninformed majority does not know who the informed minority is, the chance of lynching another of the uninformed majority is quite high. When the uninformed majority has managed to lynch all members of the informed minority the game ends in a town victory. If the informed minority manages to stay hidden and kill all members of the uninformed majority the game ends in a mafia victory.

In other version you add other groups of players to the game, maybe a detective that can investigate players during the night phase or a doctor that can protect players during the night phase.

This game is an advanced version of this game and have several groups and roles.
But it is based on the basic version with an informed minority trying to kill a uninformed majority.

These things are very interesting games. I just got into them myself a few months ago, and they are certainly a nice break from the usual. It seems to me that the more 'advanced' and complex versions of the games are the most enjoyable, though that could just be my own personal preference. This looks like it will be one of those, so it would be a fun one to get started in. One thing to keep in mind is that once the game starts, you essentially can't trust a single thing that anyone else says unless you are told you can trust them by your 'role' PM. There is no IC/OOC distinction in these games, which can be confusing to some long-time PBM players. Once the game starts, it can pervade all levels of interaction with the other participants. Suspicion is the name of the game, and trust is very hard won.

The Midgard Saga (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=78686)

It would be great if you role played a little when this game starts, taking on the mantle of stereotype Norse, displaying little regard for feelings and holding one own's honor and your kin's honor in a blood feud type of way. :wiseguy:

Live on the edge man ... live on the edge. :beam:

I find the game much more enjoyable when I create a frame or role boundaries and act within that.
It is a role playing game and hence it is not too serious. Make a character and stay in that character during the game. Then when the game is over, no hard feelings.
If you take this game too serious, you will soon make an enemy of all your friends.

Know that in the game it is OK to be a murdering liar or a backstabbing coward. :smartass2: And no-one should condemn you for it.

Round 1

The entourages of the rulers of the Norse world were greeted by a young man at Alþingi, Iceland. He introduced himself as the law speaker of Alþingi (Althing) and that he would conduct this session at Althing. The Kings all came to the centre where this young and handsome man stood. There was a strange light in the eyes of this young man, wisdom and the weight of the world radiated from them.

The young man raised his voice when all had arrived.
“Welcome Kings and other noble men, sons and daughters of Kings and noble men, the men and women in service of Kings and noble men, soldiers and others. Time is pressing and we are gathered here to settle a dispute between two Kingdoms. The rulers in these two kingdoms are here. Additionally other rulers from all around the Northern world are here to give of their wisdom in this dispute. Is this correct?”

There was unison clap of “Correct” from his audience.
“Good” said the young man. “Form camps in a semi circle around where I stand with the two kingdoms in dispute at the farthest ends”.
The rulers didn’t know each other by face and this was what was wanted. The Kings would walk, sleep and dine with their commoners, because at Althing all were equal. Also this would avoid the Kings being targeted and killed in their sleep by lawbreakers. It was against the law to murder when in session at Althing. Other petty disputes could be solved with a Holmgang.

At a stone nearby, a text were found. Who had written it nobody knew.
When the Norse members of the entourages walked by, they sensed power emitting from it.

The text reads:

Night phase completed.

The men and women from the Norse kingdoms that had come to Alþingi Iceland, had travelled far and were weary after the long journey. They had followed the young law speaker’s instruction and had built camps in a half circle around the centre of the Thing.
When they had finished, they mingled with the others sharing the latest gossip from their end of the world.
Mead was brought out and the travel weariness was soon forgotten. Laughter was heard in all the camps and warriors and noble men all walked between the camps sharing stories of bravery in war campaigns and detailed stories with easy women that they had met on foreign soil.
Night time approached and drunken men tried to find their way back to their sleeping mats. A few lingered at the campfires and shared a skin of mead or two or three.

Twilightblade was one of them and he never noticed the little man who passed him the mead skin. After drinking deeply he felt rather drowsy. “I guess I need to find my mat and get some sleep”, he told the others. It was hard to find where he had put his gear and it took some trial and error, with following curses from sleeping men getting a boot on a foot or a hand. He finally found a place and slumped hard to the ground. Oh how wonderful it was to close his eyes. The darkness that closed around him felt comforting and he embraced it. Suddenly he felt the ground jolting below him and he opened his eyes. He was no longer sleeping on the ground. The ground rushed below him and his face was full of sweet smelling golden hair. He looked up and into the back of a young and apparently beautiful woman. “Ah there you are handsome.” She turned and he looked right into a pair of the most beautiful blue eyes he had ever seen. “I am taking you home, handsome. Please hold me, I am rather cold”. Twilightblade grabbed the lithe body in front of him and wished this ride would never end.

***

The men of Jorvik were in full panoply when they found one of their warriors with an eternal smile frozen on his face, lying on the ground.
How could someone just die without having been slain in battle? This was not some old creep at the end of his days. They spoke of evil magic and dark forces and leaving this obviously Jotun infested place. Their uproar woke the other camps and it was not too long before they all marched purposefully to the law speaker, demanding some action.
The young man with the not so young eyes asked to see the dead body. The men of Jorvik brought him forth and the young law speaker took a quick look into the dead eyes of Twilightblade and opened his mouth. The young man took a quick sniff and stood up.
“This man was killed”, he proclaimed. A poison took this man’s life and my bet is that someone among us are guilty of this.
This is in breach of the laws of such a meeting. The law says that blood must be paid with blood. This is your laws and I guess you want to follow it?”
The crowd answered in unison that the law must be followed.
The law speaker took a long breath and continued, “You must return here later with a name of the person you believe have done this deed. This person will then be sacrificed to meet the demand of justice. A murder has been done and a murder will have to pay for it.”
The men of Jorvik nodded their appraisals and gave a few suggestions right there in the throng of men. “It must be one of the Norwegians, they obviously dislike our kind”.
“Return with the name”, the young man continued. “But be democratic about it. Each will cast a vote for a candidate. The candidate with the most votes will be the one who pays the price to meet justice’s demand”.

The young man turned his back on the crowd and marched towards a nearby hill. He did not like this at all. Why would someone dare to kill at an Althing? Were they ignorant of the laws? This could very well evolve to a blood bath before they had settled this dispute between Haakon Jarl of Norway and Harald Bluetooth of Denmark.

So, the third on the WH bandwagoned got bandwagoned. And the third person on 'that' bandwagoned has now just found himself bandwagoned. A whole lot of bandwagoning goin on around these parts...

CA has been changing his vote a lot though. And not for any solid reason. His vote change to Curio was pointless. Anyone in GH's last Mafia game knows that Kukri put the last crucial vote on Curio near the end of the game. For a first turn vote, it makes perfect sense for Curio to send Kukri a joke vote. CA changing his vote to nail Curio solely on that doesn't make sense.

Also, for his last vote change, CA uses the "I know I look guilty but here is my reasoning" excuse. If you say you look guilty, chances are you worried about being seen as guilty.

Round 1 completion.

The sun was past its summit when representatives of the kingdoms came climbing up the hill to the young law speaker. They looked confident and the one called Kukrikhan gave the tally to him. “I see you have reached a conclusion”. He looked at the top of the list and the name written there. “This is the man you believe is the responsible for Twilightblade’s death?” The men just nodded. “Very well, let’s descend to the others and get this over with”.
They walked together down the hill where the retinues of the kingdoms waited. One man was bound and stood proud in front of the others. The law speaker walked up to him. “Who are you?” the man didn’t answer. “I guess I asked wrongly. What do they call you?” the man smiled and answered: “They call me CountArach”. The law speaker looked closely into the man’s eyes. “You have been voted guilty by the rest of the people. Do you have anything to say?” The man stood still and uttered not another word.
“Very well, I am sorry I have to do this, but it is your law and has been for as long as the first Thing. You need to die so that your blood can pay for the deed done here last night. Blood for blood. It has been your ways since Odin gave you this law”. The man smiled and nodded. “I need a volunteer that will act as executioner.” One man came forward: “I volunteer”.
The law speaker took a good look at the volunteer. “You are sure you want to do this? Killing a man in cold blood is not easy”. That received a roar of laughter from the crowd.
One of the battle grizzled North men that stood close slapped the young law speaker on the back. “I guess you haven’t seen much fighting in your life, young man.
The crowd was seething with mirth and many gave the young man pitying looks.
“Never mind”, said the young law speaker. “Continue with the procedure, I guess you know what to do”. “Yes, I do” said the volunteer executioner. The volunteer walked slowly up to CountArach and stood before him. He leaned over and the crowd knew he was about the whisper the ritual words, but instead he said: “I know who you are old man, this time it is me who wins”. CountArach’s eyes widened and before he could react, the volunteer had pierced the mortal guise of CountArach with a sword and the life force quickly drained from him.

The crowd cheered and the law speaker asked which Kingdom CountArach did belong to. The men of the kingdoms all looked at each other and shrugged. “You mean to say that no one here knew this guy?” Again the crowd shrugged. “That is odd. We should prepare the pyres and send these men to the worlds beyond”.
The men of the kingdoms took the two bodies and carried them outside the thing where they built two pyres.

As the sun settled, the smoke from the pyres was still silently stretching towards the sky.
The law speaker hoped they could start the business he was meant to attend to here at Althing.

***

CountArach found himself walking on a fine path towards a large building. The people he met bowed in reverence and looked to the ground. He barely noticed as he pondered the latest event. That executioner at the Thing, was he the one he suspected? If so, Midgard was in dire trouble.

From a tree next to the building he heard the ‘Kra’ from some birds. CountArach smiled. It was after all good to be home.

@TinCow:

Here is a description of a Holmgang from Midgard I between CountArach (good guy) and Stig (king of the Jotun):

The men and women of the three kingdoms were confident that they had got a Jotun this time. Some were not so sure though and they scowled at the others.
One such person was Stig he wasn’t so sure that they had got a Jotun this time and scowled at CountArach.
CountA did not like the look Stig gave him and gave the sign of stupid to him. Stig took this as a personal insult and challenged CountA to a Holmgang “Right here and now!!”
People gathered around and gave way until the crowd made the unmistakably circle for such events.
The two combatants made ready and measured each others ability, but it was hard to tell. To the crowed they seemed evenly matched. CounterArach drew his sword from his scabbard with in a slow motion. The sword a beautiful Frankish blade gleamed in the evening sun. Stig let his stay in its scabbard a little while longer.
Seeing that Stig did not unsheathe his sword, CountA attacked. It was a well practiced attack with an overhand right slash and with a return of a upward left slash. Stig ducked the first but got nicked on the follow up. CountA was about to continue with another combination but Stig had his sword out in a heartbeat and blocked with the sound of steel on steel. Stig was bleeding from the slash he got and was quite frustrated with the prospect of losing. He ignored the pain and returned CountA’s furious attacks. He countered when there was an opening. It paid off as CountA received his first wound. The fight became more even, but Stig was still bleeding and hurting from his wound. Both received several nicks and small wounds the following minutes and they were both tiring fast.
CountA suddenly pulled a knife and fought now with two weapons. Stig seemed to know what to do as he parried the new style of attack but he was now so tired that all he could do was defend himself. He kicked blindly into the body of CountA who had to step away. Stig took the opportunity to step a few step away from CountA to regain composure. CountA saw that he had Stig now and started for Stig. As he took his first step he slipped in the mud and went down face first. He never recovered because his knife was draining the blood from his heart. CountA found himself looking over the shoulders of a beautiful blonde. They were riding hard for some unknown destination to CountA. She turned and smiled. “I shall bring you home to where you belong, handsome.” CountA smiled back and knew this was not too bad. To hell with Stig, he was going to enjoy this.

I thought there was a mention of Stig's size in this one but I guess I was mistaken.

Hate to have to point out this, but has anybody actually read the death description for CA?

... “Who are you?” the man didn’t answer. “I guess I asked wrongly. What do they call you?” the man smiled and answered: “They call me CountArach”. The law speaker looked closely into the man’s eyes. “You have been voted guilty by the rest of the people. Do you have anything to say?” The man stood still and uttered not another word...

..."Very well, I am sorry I have to do this, but it is your law and has been for as long as the first Thing. You need to die so that your blood can pay for the deed done here last night. Blood for blood. It has been your ways since Odin gave you this law”. The man smiled and nodded...

...."Never mind”, said the young law speaker. CountArach’s eyes widened and before he could react, the volunteer had pierced the mortal guise of CountArach with a sword and the life force quickly drained from him...

...The crowd cheered and the law speaker asked which Kingdom CountArach did belong to. The men of the kingdoms all looked at each other and shrugged. “You mean to say that no one here knew this guy?” Again the crowd shrugged. “That is odd. We should prepare the pyres and send these men to the worlds beyond”...

...CountArach found himself walking on a fine path towards a large building.

From my (admittedly little) knowledge of Norse Mythology, I'd have said that we collectively have just killed Odin, one of the most powerful Aesir!

This is based on the fact that he is walking towards a large hall (Valhalla?), which is to be expected and doesn't mean much in itself. However people are bowing down to him, and he thinks, 'Its is good to be home'. I'm fairly sure Odin resided in Valhalla.

Furthermore I remember reading (when I was in primary school, I had an interest in mythology at the time), that Odin was represented by crows or that they were his birds. Something to do with them finding his lost eye, if I remember correctly.

Take this with a pinch of salt as it has been years since I read any of this, but as I said I'm fairly sure of this....

Edit: Having read the passage in more detail I am now sure of my original guess. CA doesn't state his name, only what he is called.

Also when the speaker says; "it has been this way since Odin gave you this law" CA cracks what I take to be an ironic smile.

The executioner states that he knows who he is, and that he will win, I take this to mean that the Jotun couldn't pass up the oppurtunity to murder his main rival, also the wording that Sigurd uses to describe his death, (piercing his mortal guise) indicates immortality.

Finally he wasn't attached to any of the kingdomat the meeting indicating a special role.

Congratultions, men and women of the Kingdoms, we have just executed one of our most powerful allies in the struggle against the Jotun! Now did anybody see which way the young executioner ran, he is our Jotun!

I agree. It does look like we lynched Odin, though it would be better if CA could respond to this in some manner. What powers would Odin have had? Did we just lose a doctor, detective, vigilante, combo role?

Seamus Fermanagh

It seems likely that we have done for the mortal form of an immortal. The reverence of those being passed by CA suggest godhood and not jotunhood -- though both interpretations are possible.

The bird referrant is indistinct -- Sigurd adores a touch of ambiguity as I recall from I -- but the most consistent bird allusion is with Odin. In v 1.0, Odin was the "detective" for the good guys. We may be without a very important tool.

However, even with Odin's efforts in the last go-around, the Jotun still prevailed. Their Holmgang scores were very high, though not insurmountable. Assuming this theme continues in v 2.0, it would be poor odds for a human to face them unless and until holmgang skill has improved, however.

Does Odin's mortal disguise's death mean we lose or gain 'majik', I wonder.

"Gave Us The"

Is the second line, w is synonymous with v is Norse, since w makes a v sound.

Odin was the God of poetry, hence writing, and also magic and wisdom. Odin's pro-town role would make sense to be detective, since he is the wisest of the Æsir, but he would have been fierce in combat too. A grave loss.

Yeah, I get that. I just did a straight, raw transposition. My question is: is this intended as a clue of some kind, or just a bit of norse ambience by our host?

A note to those who play power-town roles in the future: Do not change your votes over and over for little or no reason...

Sorry guys, but in Day 1, with so little to go on, CA's rampant vote changing seemed like the most guilty thing around.

Not much more to add, other than what reading I've done backs up what I thought originally. PK has a good point however, vote-changing for little reason is kind of semi-suspicious and on Day1 semi-suspicious is usually enough to get you lynched. That said I expected somebody to pick up my reference to GH's game, Kev was correct in his explanation of it, maybe I should have indicated that...

I'd also suggest that FH hearing a crow would indicate that CA investigated him, though since he was killed we have no way of knowing what the result was. In other words the fact that we can assume an investigation is of little value. Anyone else hearing crows in the night?

Finally the runes. If the translation indeed reads:
The God Odin, benevolent, gave us the knowledge of writing and magic (Roughly translated)

Then we should keep it in the back of our minds. Odin seems to be dead, so any later benefits we might gain by his being alive have gone. I think that it is dependent on who the 'us' is. The people of the Kingdoms, or the Jotun. Do 'we' of the Kingdoms, have the knowledge of magic, is the question that needs answering, or is that the Jotun.

Further research is required and I shall report back. However I doubt it is much of a clue, as it seems a statement of fact.

I caution people from challenging for little or no reason. Decimating the ranks of the town in challenges will only help the Jotun.

I would think that the Norsemen of old preferred to settle disputes or crude arguments in battle rather than negotiations as they place great importance in their 'path of the warrior(?).' So challenges should be common.
(Then again, I know very little about the ups and downs of Holmgang, and how they may affect the rest of the game, as what Privateerkev cautioned)

Congratultions, men and women of the Kingdoms, we have just executed one of our most powerful allies in the struggle against the Jotun! Now did anybody see which way the young executioner ran, he is our Jotun!

Agreed. Surviving N1 is based on not drawing the slightest of suspicion to oneself. Now, if CountArach is indeed Odin...
...
Well let's just say, none would have thought Odin, the head of the gods, is a an indecisive 'person' or at least a heavy N1 vote changer.
At least I didn't... ~:handball:

I'm looking at it from a "mafia game" perspective. Holmgang kills people. Unless those people are Jotun, then every death hurts the town. Now, if it is true that winning in Holmgang raises your ability, then that does mitigate it a little. But we still need townies to be alive. And having them all slay themselves in Holmgang will hurt the town more than it will help by maybe raising someone's ability.

While it is true that a raised ability will make it easier to defeat a Jotun in battle, we will always have one good weapon to use on any Jotun. And that is the lynch. And the lynch doesn't need to be powered up by using it bunches of times first.

Now, that being said, I will not back down from a challenge. If ET is truly driven to meet his maker, I will then speed him on his journey.

But I do ask that we think strategically about Holmgang challenges. I am sure the Jotun would love for all of us to just slaughter each other while they sit, watch, and laugh. I'm not saying we should have no Holmgangs. It is our way and we should use it when we need to. But I will look at "joke Holmganging" like I look at "joke lynching." Which is unfavorably...

Seeing as we usually have something like a 10:1 ratio of good guys to bad guys random holmganging just seems like a good way for the town to kill themselves off, out of those 5 fights theres at best 1 bad guy, he may not even lose so from this fighting we could just lose 5 good guys and with CA (if he is pro-town god) then this is not a positive start....

Do challenges have to be accepted or for the good of the town can they be rejected ?

Sigurd will only pick one fight. So, at worst, we will only lose one townie. But, if the game goes long, those deaths add up. If it drags on and comes down to the wire, we might regret all of those 'joke-Holmgangs' just like some of us regret the meatball votes, abstains, lurking, inactivity, and other anti-town distractions in past games.

I never played the previous version of Midgard, and as such I have little idea how good my 'holmgang stats are in comparision to everyone else. Something to consider however...

Sigurd surely will have thought of the fact that early in the game there will be joke holmgangs. There is every possibility that a Jotun will be the victim of one of these. If so it is likely that the Jotun will have fairly high stats in order to survive. In addition, I feel the Holm-gang is more to add flavour rather than be used as a viable alternative to lynching. Finally aren't the Jotun Ice-giants? I certainly wouldn't want to test my fighting skills with one of those...

I'd assume they'd rip little old me apart...

Edit: See Seamus above, already confirmed my fears...

Here is where I get my information:

end game post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1438619&postcount=1562)

write up (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1474646&postcount=1596) (refresh if the spoiler won't open)

Holmgang (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1439189&postcount=1583)

Now, I fully expect that Sigurd would have changed some things but it might give us an idea of what is going on.

so basically the Gods have the highest fighting ability then the jotun and lastly townies ?

From the write up ordaniry townies did seem to luckily overcome stronger opponents, but they will usually die.. could this be another intresting way to test suspects, if they win a challenge then they where either lucky or had a higher fighting ability indicating a special role...

helped explain things a bit for me, thanks kev..

The write up can reveal a lot, or nothing at all.

I miss the claim of Loki, I wonder if the Gods are actually included in this game.

I wouldn't draw too much conclusions from those write-ups. In Midgard I, townies didn't go to Walhalla and because of that, some townies were considered to be guilty while they weren't :mean:

It's also a general rule in mafia: don't read too much in the kill and lynch descriptions.

The challenges are:

1. GeneralHankerchief vs. Warmaster Horus
2. woad&fangs vs. Husar
3. makaikhaan vs. Kukrikhaan
4. Caius vs. Andres
5. Eliit Tuhkur vs. Privateerkev
6. pevergreen vs. Kukrikhaan

One will be picked by the roll of a die and entered into the combat tool.
The results will be posted with the night results of round 2.

So just to get this straight, you can actually die from a Holmgang challange, the higher the score the better and you can challange anyone.

What exactly does it do? (Meaning does it reveal any info or items or anything)

pevergreen
08-11-2008, 10:39
The loser of Holmgang will die, the write-up hints at the peoples scores, but can be misleading. The Jotun last game could pose as weak townies in Holmgang.

the higher the score the better and you can challange anyone.

Forgot to address those:

Yes, last game the maximum score was 10, with base values of 9. Winning a Holmgang gave a once off improvement of one to your base score. There is a system that Sigurd has created, so just because you have a higher score does not mean you will win for sure.

And yes, you can challange any living player. 6 Challanges are accepted, but only one is conducted, chosen at random by the host. You can't retract a Challange either, so do not make them lightly!
