Like in that game where you play as that Japanese cop where doves appear out of nowhere every level, where you can't reload unless you empty your gun, except the reloads were instant and took no time in that game...

Honestly I have a deep feeling that my former experiance in BR will not give too much of an advantage this game. Back in BR I worked alone and silently eliminated my opponents using my superior stealth and tactics. It worked mostly because I was able to hide easily, and my opponents had a very tough time seeing me before my dagger was in their back. Here is is a whole new game., not the least of which because of the change in scenery. Here in a huge city stealth loses some of its appeal, and the fact that the real opponents we have, the zombies, can not be fooled by simply hiding.
Indeed it is possible to hide from the zombies, and the scenery is really for storyline purposes mostly. There are far more places to hide in a city than in the jungle, methinks... the city is the ultimate jungle, made of concrete and steel.
*plays Welcome to the jungle (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_0l14CzIos)
Guns also add a new dimension of the game, making my old style horribly outdated.
You'll find that guns work in almost the same way as the previous weapons. The only real difference is that with melee weapons there's added combat bonuses based on your stats, and there are sniper weapons.
And lets not forget this is a much more cooperative game, no going lone wolf this time. also, win is not based on killing everyone else, Which changes dynamics a lot.
Any townsperson or serial killer has the option of going for a lone wolf victory by being the last one standing. After the town "wins" the game (if they win) then the remaining townies may want to think about going insane and killing off their former allies and attempting to be the last one standing.
Or beforehand, whichever works for you... :laugh4:
However that is not to say I plan on dying off early. I am willing to adapt to the new setting, and we will see how things go down. :beam:
:2thumbsup:
In all, I love these games, and I really respect the hosts who take their time to bring us all such great games :2thumbsup: One day when I get better at hosting I may make one myself. But There is just so much that would need to be done, it boggles the mind.
Indeed.
Copycats (of which I am one of them) don't try this game at home. Please host a game half this size and complexity and see if you can handle that first, unless you feel like having your back broken in half.... :eyebrows:
-Offline for a moment, when I come back, missing cards and final writeup of this phase.
Was it made clear how many combat rounds there could be per phase? To me it seems like in 15 minutes a lot of shots can be fired, so I'm guessing unlimited rounds.
There could be unlimited rounds, but if your pistol only had 10 bullets in the clip and fired one bullet per combat round then, only ten rounds of combat would feature you using your gun. If you were both still alive you would then revert to any other weapon you have. this might just be your fists.
ATPG might want to specify for clarity, but I imagaine the effectiveness of handguns will be greatly reduced in larger battles involving more than just two people.
For example if it was you and a few allies verses five zombies. Your 10 Bullet clip for your handgun would only last you 2(?) combat rounds. Two bullets for each Zombie.
Please note that you can be a little creative and more specific regarding combat. For example... You are able to specifiy in you phase orders that you want to use your Katana for the first combat round. Perhaps depending on orders this could be a first strike. Then use your hand gun for the remaining rounds till you run out of bullets and which point switch back to Katana.
In fact if you have the luxury of having more than one weapon, it might pay to be more specific.

Can I just get a quick confirmation on something?
Are we allowed to communicate directly via pm with anyone in our zone of control? If so can we do so immediately upon receiving our updated character cards or should we wait for the updated writeup to be posted?

Also I have a question that I can't find an answer to. Is there any way to increase your stats? Or do they remain the same throughout the game?.
Yes;
While searching for weapons or items you can happen to find herbs. There are 10 different kinds of herbs, and some of them heal you, and others increase your stats. If you combine certain kinds of herbs, they boost the effectiveness of both.
Example:
Blue Herb
(Adds Speed +1)
Can be combined with Black Herb for Speed +2, Stealth +2
Can be combined with Brown Herb for Speed +2, Strength +2
Can be combined with Black and Brown for Speed +2, Strength +2, Stealth+2, FULL RESTORE
Full restore means restores 100% of your lost vitality.
Some kinds of herbs do nothing besides heal you unless they are combined with things. Any herb can be taken immediately if you'd rather not wait to combine them.

How long will the effects of herbs last?

How long will the effects of herbs last?
Any effect they have is permanent (if it is a boost to your stats).
It doesn't matter what character you have. If you found enough herbs you could potentially defeat anyone one-vs-one. No one is given a character so weak they cannot go for a solo win.

I do suppose we are not able to boost our stats further than 10 with herbs, correct?

Is El Gigante killable?
Pizza has mentioned that it is previously, but that requires tons of fire power. I suspect tons of vit, insane regen (like 10 vit/ combat turn) and high combat (so hard to hit depite being a giant).
Otherwise 2-3 people with ok weapons would be able to simply wither him down in a few turns. And killing the crowd buster in turn 3 would be silly.

i guess ATPG is banking on the fact that not everyone in the crowd will be willing to stay for many combat rounds. some people will definitely run away after 1st round and most people after loosing certain amount of vitality. When they runaway he will probably make sure that they are split into a few groups or individuals

Yes, you can. The 10-max limit applies only to the start of the game, to make sure someone doesn't have a character that is broken (wins every battle with 20 combat, but otherwise sucks).
Pizzaguy make sure game functions without uber-character cheats. However, skilled/lucky players can gain a larger advantage over time with careful searches and better stats.

I imagine so, or rather I hope so.

I will put it to you as such: unlike Leon, you won't be able to fell the giant with a knife. If you wish to destroy the creature, you may try.

I wouldn't make it impossible to kill if I didn't intend that it get killed eventually. However I will tell you... it isn't easy, and if it hits you, it will likely crush you.

Sorry for not sending in orders yet, Atpg. I will do them within the next hour.
Two more questions though:
So far I was under the impression that movement was only allowed along the streets, but than I realized you never said anything specific about it. So are there any back entrances of houses one could use to move along?
Also, does anything happen if we cross the path of another player or zombie or zombie horde during our movement or is the only thing that counts the square in which we end up and the area around it?
Doh. Apologies ATPG, I'm just not that good with deadlines. Although to be fair, I've been working on an important piece of university coursework for the past few days, but the only reason I left it this late is because I'm not that good with deadlines, so...

2. PRIVATE COMMUNICATION outside the thread about the game is not allowed unless specified exactly by the game host. No seriously, this is the biggest rule of them all. You cannot communicate telepathically across a city, so unless you have an item which allows such communication, you cannot talk to your friends or enemies about the game in any way shape or form. You may mention the game in passing to a friend who is not playing if you wish, but do not divulge your current stats, weapons, location, or other sensitive personal information. You never know who your friend might tell that information to... and having your friend communicate this information to other players on purpose is an intentional rule break and it is not allowed, no exceptions. If someone accidentally breaks this rule, please inform me immediately, and I'll send them a friendly warning. This is the best outcome for that situation. Otherwise, you're on the hook for this rule break as well. This is what you meant, right?:juggle2:

I still need to catch some sleep, but I aim to chew through a large chunk of the remaining character cards before midnight; it does look like I will miss my own deadline though. The public writeup and all the cards will be done ASAP after that, because I do want to keep things moving.
Very interesting developments this round. This one will be filled with action, carnage, and destruction.

Question for ATPG when he regains consciousness: how many words do you actually write, on average, per update? Public writeup, character cards etc. Obviously it depends on how much action takes place in an update, but you know, ballpark figures.

On my week of no internet acces, I wrote 44 pages of word doucment making an AAR from scratch, so it did have its perks, I don't plan on hosting it for a while though.... I must have done about 10000 words there, and 44 pages is like 2/3 of one of atpg's rounds, so I'd say about 15000 words per update at a guess :laugh4:

I wouldn't even want to guess, but I think it is more like; each player he has to plot on the map, check to see if any players meet up..., "roll the dice" for each battle, each round of combat, each item that player may be able to find, check the mode each player is in, then update each card with this info, then do write up...we clocked ATPG at around 60-70 wpm typing. I'll tell you if this was my game (which it never would be-I'm not that insane, no really), you guys wouldn't be getting anything back for like another week, at least. I'm not that "techie" and can't type anywhere near as fast.

:laugh4: Honestly, you orgahs... I don't know. You casually bring up a 44-page Word document and then manage to sound slightly disappointed in it, when comparing it to ATPG's output! The largest game I ever hosted was a NotW on CFC that required a 39-page Word Document over the course of the entire game. Including role PMs. I am beginning to suspect that each one of you is a machine, or perhaps a hive of something.

If this were my game I'd have disassembled my computer and gone off into the wilderness to live a new life as a hunter-gatherer by now.
But I just can't see how, short of employing people, ATPG can hammer out the sort of output rate that would make whoever it was that organised the Beijing Olympics raise an eyebrow. (And looking at some of the mafia games on this forum, it's not just him. Although it is mostly him.)
(Oh yeah, and also NotW XXX (see signatures of... many people) is a thing that is there, on the Internet, and it is hosted by Frozen In Ice who is a guy who is also there on the Internet. Come to think of it, he's written a lot of stuff too. You're all very odd people. )

After collapsing due to exhaustion, catching a 5 hour nap, I managed to finish your character cards, 5 hours late, even after the extension. I tried to do the rest of them in one run, but I didn't get any sleep last night because I needed to take a break from the LAST run of cards, and I spent like 8 hours playing Final Fantasy X, in lieu of sleep. Pizza needed a mental break, forgot to sleep. Tried to finish cards, couldn't.
For the sake of moving this round along I shall do the PUBLIC writeup now, and I will attempt to make up for the rather lackluster private reports I've been giving out this round. This means it could take an hour. I will put real effort into this one.
If I had all week to do these cards, I promise I'd spend a lot more time on each one. There's SO much room for artistic creativity here, the whole reason why I want to host this game by myself and spend time making the game individually fun for everyone. It saddens me when I have to give a two-sentence blurb as your report. I want to describe surroundings, show pictures, play music, set the mood.... there's so much more I could do if there were fewer of you to do it for, and time weren't a factor. All in all I am disappointed with where the game currently sits compared to my creative vision for the game. However, only I as a game designer and writer probably care all that much about it. All I get is positive feedback.
Anyways. Yak yak yak get to the writing pizzaguy/

Thank you.
My concern is that information could be used against players... technically you're not supposed to know what is happening around the town, because you're not everywhere at once, but with no public communication, having no public writeup would harm the game's entertainment value. I can't do a public writeup very well without mentioning a name of the player or their character or their weapon or... something. Sentences need nouns once in a while, not just pronouns. However, any weapon you see is common enough that several players may have one, some names (first or last) are re-used, and locations such as "field", "tower", or "parking lot" may be virtually anywhere.
I think it is a fair compromise, but I will feel absolutely terrible if public writeup information spoils the game for anyone. This is a work-in-progress and I haven't ironed out all the kinks.

You can request to move to a certain location, but I roll the dice to determine if you get to end up that way.
You generally move as fast as you can, as far as you can, in one direction. This, more than anything else, will help you "outrun" people. If they are slower than you, chasing you down will be difficult as they will have to corner you on the edge of the playable area, and by then several turns have passed and they might have allies and weapons now.

Are you tracking which areas have been searched?
Can the same area be searched twice and find items in both searches?
EDIT:
What can be expected if mutiple people search the same area?
Awareness: affects % chance of finding an item
Luck: affects % chance of finding a rare (read: more powerful) item, if you find an item.
I am keeping track on which areas you have searched, yes. However, random item drops are random, which means if an area has been thoroughly searched, more items can still be found. One thing that WILL NOT HAPPEN is if you found a location which automatically drops a rare or ultra-rare weapon or unique item, if you search it again you won't get more of them. Wow, found a chainsaw! I'll search again and find two of them! No, it won't happen.
What can happen is that you'd randomly find two of the same item, but not because that square generates such an item, because you rolled the same number twice on a 100-sided die. That has nothing to do with where you're searching. Also, if you or people on your team have figured out a spot which tends to drop rare items, and the area has been searched thoroughly, it will be a while before I consider that spot a rare drop location again. I specifically won't allow you to stay there and just search for rare weapons all game. It will drop one rare weapon, and then you're done; if you find more it is because of your luck alone, and it would have been the same regardless of location.
Bottom line: It's in your interest to search different locations. Staying put and searching over and over is by design not going to help your chances of finding things, and will actually lower your odds of finding good stuff.

Question about this?
So because searching is based on awareness and luck and location.... Would you allow (without decided to go against the rolls) for us to search a area say twice.... For a more throught search?
I understand the whole stay there and search over and over again thing... but twice makes sense for me... When Ive lost something in the house... I generally search for it twice or three times to make sure Ive covered everything... Does that make sense?
yeah but how likely are you to find a RPG in your house (lets say there is one) on the first search.

The tile you searched is searched thoroughly for any "location-based" weapons on the first shot. If it is searched it is searched. After that, you're just generating random stuff, which could happen anywhere. And you'd have a chance of finding "Location-based" stuff at new locations, as opposed to no chance at all in an already searched zone.
What searching thoroughly does is searches 9 tiles instead of the 1 tile you look at when you search on the move (search quickly)
Mathematically it could make sense to move somewhere in stealth/assassin/defense/cooperation mode, and then on the following round do a thorough search, then move again, then search, rinse repeat. However you will move across the map half as quickly, and time is also a factor in the game. How much time do you wish to expend at a certain location? Everything is a trade off. More tiles searched means less distance covered, obviously. More distance covered means more locations on the map have been reached. So we have location-based items and we also have randomly scattered rare item drop locations, to make both plans have costs and benefits. I tried to put a lot of thought into this game... :book:
As an aside, unrelated, and directed at everyone in the game:
Keep in mind the game is based on dice rolls. Sometimes people get lucky or unlucky. Do not think that your stats mean you automatically pwn everyone, and do not think that having bad stats means you automatically lose. If you encounter someone and it looks like you could destroy them immediately and they beat you over the head with a manhole cover for example, it might fall under the category of "stuff happens", not "OMG he must be SOOOO powerful to beat me with a manhole cover!"
Maybe if he were hunting you down and destroying several people with that manhole cover, could you conclude that. Otherwise you're leaping to conclusions.

I need orders from all these players, if I am not mistaken. Double checking my email inbox.
I didn't think it was this many... I will have to extend the round until midnight tonight. I hope to see orders by then.

Ah yes, here come some of my missing orders now. :laugh4: I'm starting to feel less bad about these phase updates taking a day longer than expected, since apparently people have a hard enough time even getting orders in during a 72-hour time frame, plus extensions. Honestly, as long as the moderators don't start getting upset about the long phases, I don't mind the delay. I'd like to keep things moving though because this game could conceivably last for dozens more phases, and during that time we're already going to have to witness the forced departure of Death is yonder. Who knows what else may happen in people's RL situations. The sooner we get things rolling, the better for everyone. Also around the Christmas holidays and New Years I expect half of you to forget this game even exists, which is bad news for the inactive players, and good news for the zombies. "Merry Christmas"... *gunned down by Tommy gun*

A reminder to everyone: Do not shout out your location, or potential location, or engage in public shouts of any kind regarding strategy, bluffing, or otherwise disrupt the "people in town are not telepathic and cannot communicate across town" rule.

According to my records, these players have not submitted orders for this round. It is my hope that you folks will remember to do so, and take advantage of the time it takes me to do these write-ups, and use that extra time wisely. I wouldn't want you to fall behind the others.
Next, a status report:
1. I have processed everyone's orders for this round so far
2. I have moved everyone on the map
3. I have moved the non-player characters
4. I have randomized your item and weapon drops
5. I am getting started on the battles for this round, of which there are fewer than last round :sweatdrop: Thank goodness....
6. After that, all orders have to be in because orders accepted after that point can affect the results of battles or put you inside the awareness radius of some other players and I'm not doing character cards twice. You have until all the battles are rolled to get an order in, after that I am sorry.
Step 6 (character cards- individual reports) takes the longest and it takes two sittings bare minimum, as you know by now. I have a rhythm down but it will never get any quicker than it is now. I actually get numbness in my index fingers after this whole process is over, because of the amount of typing I do (yes, it really is that much more than my usual walls of text), but as long as you guys remain interested in the game, I will be interested enough in the outcome of the game to sit next to the computer with some popcorn, following the saga along with you, and chuckling at some of the twists and turns this game is taking.
Will be working on battles and some character cards tonight. After that, it may take two more sittings to be done, so figure 48 hours maybe.

Amazing, it only took me like 11 tries to even get the reply to thread screen to function.
STATUS OF THIS GAME:
Guess what I am ready to send out your character cards, but the .org is still sick. Every time I try to send a private message with your data on it, the .org takes about 10 minutes to tell me it can't do anything at all.
So I can't send out your results until that is done. What's even more fun is that I update your card in the private message box, by copying the data from a .rtf file and just editing the result data and the location, current items and weapons, current vitality, current players visible, etc information. Well, I can edit all that info in the .rtf file but it doesn't have the bold tags, the hyperlinks, the img tags, or any other specialized function, and it's nearly impossible to read the file in just text format because it looks like a massive jumble of data until it is copied into the message window, where I usually edit it. And since I can't send the first one out to A Very Super Market, I can't get any of them done.
Fortunately (?) everyone seems to be having issues, so I'm not afraid a mod will shut my game down due to inactivity. But when the .org is feeling better and I can actually send out the cards, it will still take me a day or two to do it all, since if you recall I cannot do the 61 remaining player's cards in one sitting.
What I am doing since the .org is down is I am going into my text file and editing your cards manually, even though it is formatted like gobbledygook. This takes an extremely long time because I can't easily find where to start and stop, and I need to re-read each card before I save the file, double checking to make sure A) I updated ALL the data and B) the update itself was correct. Since it looks like snow on a television screen, this means I have trouble reading it quickly.
So I am done about 6 player's cards, about a 10th of the work, doing it this way. So no matter how sick the .org is I will get this done. And when it is back up, it will take me 30 seconds to send out the cards I've already updated and maybe another 15 seconds to triple-check the data. So good news is I am not stalled completely, I am just slow.
Someone post here in this thread when the .org is functioning properly, and I can navigate several windows before it freezes up.
-EDIT- Ok, the thing froze up again, So I am retrying this post. Work this time, dang you.

I think ATPG has died from stress.
Very nearly.
My neck was in agony today and I took a bunch of Advil and laid down. I don't know why I am awake right now but I figure I can bang out a few cards. Today (24th) me and Diana are going out traveling and we will be gone for many hours, and I am not confident the cards will all be done by then.
It's just as well, there's Christmas coming up and it's doubtful many people would be sending orders in anyway. It turns out sending out the cards in two days requires mostly uninterrupted free time, which I haven't been getting much of lately.
Working on: Karo's card now. Updating this post as I work.
EDIT: Working on: Yaseikhaan's card now.
I had to skip a couple people. If you haven't gotten your card yet, it's because either your orders were sent in late and I will get to yours later, or because I intend to spend a little time doing your private report.

Ok, most everyone has their card, but I need to stop for a break before I continue with those I've left behind. Apologies for the extra delay on those 5 people who don't have their cards. Will get to them hopefully before I leave tonight, but I cannot guarantee it.
After that, I've got a medium-sized public writeup to do, and then you'll have a bunch of time to get your orders in for phase 5 because it's err umm Christmas and stuff. So although I'd like the round to progress as fast as possible, go enjoy your holiday. Game will still be here when you get back.

You guys are in for a treat at the end of the game. Some people, well, they got some interesting private writeups which they can save and reveal at the end of the game.
Which by the way, I am archiving all the PMs that I send and receive, but quite honestly I don't know how much of it I am willing to sift through to find read-worthy ones to post at the end, so save your favorites and post them yourself when the game's over.
Another excellent writeup there ATPG. The awesome Samurai Zombie showdown at the end was truly epic.

Well, we can do some rough etimates from what we know from the basic rules. Or you just skip to the end to avoid the number crunching and light rambling about dangerous weapons. :laugh4: I guess that's why Pizza mentioned first hit as an important battle moment.
Weapons have 2 stats. Damage/hit and attacks/round. So, a basic assumption is that both stats can be higher than one on better weapons. That makes a 2/2 weapon that can make 4 damage/round. The katana is probably the best melee weapon (not counting possible specials), so that's not an impossible weapon strength.
For melee weapons:
Speed gives chance for an extra attack. That makes 2/3.
Strength gives extra melee damage. I'm guessing on 2 extra for like 10 strength. 1 feels a bit little and 3 feels a bit too much to be somewhat balanced. That makes 4/3.
So a 10 strength, 10 speed char with the best melee weapon could possibly make 12 damage/round. No idea if that's a correct estimation or if anybody have such a char (would probably be an "Alice" char in that case, inhumanly boosted as combat would be very low otherwise (we haven't been informed if an "Alice" char exist though)), but with better weaponry, damage output is sick.
9 damage/round (3/3) is basically confirmed, unless melee weapons always got 1 attack/round. Then we still have atleast (4/2) as Dragonfly katana>pick axe>tire iron.
I would guess that the best ranged weapons got somewhat simular stats for balance purposes.
Mr. Scott seems to have very high combat (or high luck but it sounds like combat stats) and is probably not your average townie so he might have some extra strength, so a possible +1 damage. We haven't been told if the rounds are summarized or not, so we don't know if he killed all zombies in one round or not, but we can assume that he killed at least most of them in one round, as he only takes damage once by the description. By the sound of it, he's even ambushed.
That means at least 2 health for zombies and probably no more than 7. Most likely in the lower middle, particulary considering the previous pick axe battle, thus 3-4. That means he killed them in two blows and got lucky or were strong enough to kill them in one blow. Probably more than 1 attack/round as well.
Or we can just assume that average zombie=average non-distributed human => 4 in vit and 4 in combat. :laugh4:
So 3-4 vit for zombies are most probable.
I can understand why ATPG is a little bit careful about these general descriptions, as they still contain plenty of information. :juggle2:

You will find that a first strike, plus a weapon that can deal significant damage in a single combat round, will be more effective in slaying one's target with a minimum of damage on the attacker, whereas say a gun with a maximum damage of one or two in a combat round will take several rounds and a fair amount of luck to cause lethal blows, or if you're weak in the strength and speed categories and you attempt to use a melee weapon, and your opponent can avoid or absorb some of the damage inflicted, you might end up causing very little damage if any, per round. Effective in countering such first strikes would be to avoid combat altogether (not landing near the person in question, or successfully using stealth against them passively or aggressively) or having a weapon which counters first strikes (like a flash grenade) or being in a more aggressive mode (such as berserker mode) which gives you the first strike in most circumstances. Surviving such first strikes is a matter one or a few of several factors: Having a high enough combat rating to avoid being hit in the first place, having a high enough luck attribute to take less damage or absorb all damage from the attack, or having enough vitality points to remain standing afterward. Then there's also factors like defensive gear; helmets, body armor, and so on. All defensive items can be found with search, and all attribute-boosting herbs can be found with search, and the choice is usually yours which direction you move. Finally, tactics will likely get you somewhere, as some have seen... sometimes you can gain an extra first strike by incapacitating your opponent somehow, or by setting up a booby trap.
The public writeup should be somewhat illuminating about what's going on. I try to narrate the battle as it was rolled, but sometimes I might take some artistic license with it.
