Introduction:
Well, it's been a while, hasn't it? The Mafia series is by far the longest-running series in the Gameroom, and also has the most entrants with a staggering nine now. However, considering the last time I hosted this game was in early summer 2008 (I was still in high school, for God's sake!) many of you aren't familiar with my flagship franchise, or have never played in one. Hopefully, this will change and you will enjoy your experience.

Mafia IX, like the rest of the series that began the noble .Org experiment, takes place in the Frontroom, where the games were originally held before this subforum was created. It is Mafia at its most basic, with only one power role: Mafia. There are no serial killers, no vigilantes, no doctors, no third-party roles or extra victory conditions of any kind, and no Detective. It is simply Mafia vs. Town.

Roles:

Mafiosi: (2)
The villains of the game. They are terrorizing the Frontroom and murdering innocent civilians every night. If the noble town wishes to survive then they must be neutralized. Each mafioso gets one kill per night, unless one of them is lynched in which case the remaining mafioso gets two kills per night. This means two townies will die every night, no matter what (unless all mafiosi are lynched, meaning that the game is over and thus there will be no more kills ).

The mafia have some say in how much/little they put in their kill descriptions. It is up to the town to figure out how much is their work and how much is mine.

Townies: (everybody else)
This is most likely you. In case you've never played a vanilla game before, you're going to find out fast that there's no coasting through this one if you want to survive. You can't wait for the power roles to band together and nobly sniff out the mafia, because there are no power roles. There is only you and your powers of analysis. You could be the town's greatest weapon in this game, but you could also be its worst enemy, depending on how much you put into the game and whether you're right or not. Bring your 'A' game.

Game procedure:
As per tradition, the game will start with a night phase. Unfortunately, this means two people will die before they even get the chance to cast one vote. Sorry, but it works better for the story that way, and unlike in other games, you can still heavily contribute to the town's effort by careful analysis of the thread. Anyway, after night, it's day where the alive townies can vote and try to lynch the mafia. Voting procedure is the usual, i.e.:

Vote: GeneralHankerchief

If you wish to unvote, then do so as follows:

Unvote: TosaInu
Vote: GeneralHankerchief

When unvoting, I prefer you specifying who you are unvoting as it makes things easier for me to keep track of. However, I will not be as crabby about this as in the past as I have finally joined the 21st century and now keep track of votes via Excel as opposed to pen-and-paper.

Voting abstain (you are present for the round and have no lynch preference) is allowed, but "No Lynch" is not. If you post in a round but do not vote, I count it as an "abstain". Additionally, after a certain amount of rounds, usually when I deem it to be endgame, "Abstain" will no longer be allowed, meaning you must vote to lynch someone. I will let you know in the thread once this threshold has been crossed.

Other rules:

Hopefully, this section won't ever have to be invoked. I like to keep things low-maintenance, as it allows me as a host to focus on writing cool descriptions and tallying votes.

Screenshots are not allowed, no matter how (un)incriminating. Anything else that can be faked, including but not limited to: PMs, .Org chat logs, off-site chat logs, etc. are fair game, so go crazy. Note: Once dead, none of this applies and you cannot quote anything not said in the public thread at all.

I have very little tolerance for rule-breakers. It's pretty hard to mess things up in this game and I hope it stays that way. Keep in mind that I am now a Gameroom moderator, so violators will feel my wrath, now with the special sauce.

Other:

The most important rule of all has its own section: HAVE FUN!!!

Sign-ups will run for a few days. Hopefully everyone in The Shadow Fort can spare a few extra minutes every day to keep up. Thanks for your interest and best of luck!

Have you ever played in one of the GH mafia series games?

It's been so long...

Askthepizzaguy
03-10-2010, 07:32
No, I had not joined in any of the mafia games back then. I was still dwelling in the Citadel.

Source: Pizzapedia
I hosted my first game on 8-18-2008 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?106845-Mini-Simpsons-Mafia-%28Game-Thread%29) (yick, I was a terrible host back then), and played my first game on 8-27-2008 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?107164-The-Lunar-Whale-A-Final-Fantasy-IV-Mafia-%28Concluded%29). Mafia VIII was back in 5-28-2008 (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?104162-Mafia-VIII-Return-of-the-Recommencement-of-the-Revenge-of-the-Mafia).
The gameroom was a much simpler time back then. Yea, Khaan was known as Makaikhaan, Sigurd was known as Fafnesbane, Tiberius was still a Drake and not a Beskar*, Psychonaut was still quite Rythmic, Kralizec was still Fenring, QJC was still Quintus J. Cicero, Little was still as Grizzly as ever, and Kommodus was the mafia hunter extraordinaire that everyone feared. Now, Khaan is YaseiSeireMakaiMechaUltrakhaan, There's no more Kommodus, QJC, LG, Tiberius, and the mafia hunter everyone fears is random.org (praise be to the random gods, for they not only select the mafia, but they also point the innocents in their direction) and metagaming investigators who shall not be named. :laugh4:

*they are two different peoples.

Also the gameroom was much quieter back then. You could combine the top five posters in a game and that would be me now.

Sorry, but it works better for the story that way, and unlike in other games, you can still heavily contribute to the town's effort by careful analysis of the thread.

So as not to remove two players before the game even begins, why not start with a day phase where we find two murdered NPC's instead of players? This way you still have victims, but you don't remove players before they even get to enjoy it?

You see, Thermal, there's two ways to approach that statement.

If I say that Csargo is mafia, how do you know I'm not just branding an innocent man?
If I say that Csargo is town, how do you know I'm not just covering for a scum partner?

And then you have to consider what if I expect you to think the contrary, so I lie to cover what you believe is a lie? So I could say that Csargo is mafia because I know you'll think I'm lying and brand him as town, thereby ensuring he's safe for a while. xD

If I'm being killed for that, can I at least request that anyone who disputes the majesty of Dodgeball:A True Underdog Story be sent to the grave with me?

It's all a matter of perspective; the way I see it, everyone else uses 30% too few words per paragraph. Their other flaws: listening to me when I'm wrong and not listening to me when I'm right. For some reason they can never seem to get those last two correct.

You see, Thermal, there's two ways to approach that statement.

Csargo is mafia
or
Csargo is mafia

And then you have to consider what if I expect you to think Csargo is Mafia, so I tell the truth, Csargo is Mafia. Csargo is mafia because I know you'll think I'm lying and brand him as town, thereby ensuring that Csargo is Mafia

My interpretation :inquisitive:

Day breaks in the Frontroom. All is quiet. It was a tranquil Spring day, the first truly beautiful weather the villagers had witnessed since they had hunkered in for the long, dark, cold winter back in the fall, several months ago. Finally, there looked to be rebirth. Finally, the sun was coming out again.

My, how quickly this would change.

A white, unmarked van slowly pulled up to Crazed Rabbit's house. Outside stepped a man, sharply-dressed save for the fact that he was wearing stereotypical 1950s deliveryman clothing. When Crazed Rabbit went to answer the door, he too was bemused by this man's clothing choice, but never got the chance to mention it.

"Telegram," said the deliveryman, handing CR an envelope.

"Telegram?" CR asked, eying the deliveryman while at the same time taking the envelope. "Those things are still around?"

"Well," the deliveryman said, "like everyone else, we're tightening the belt a bit with this economy. But yeah, despite phones and the internet and everything, there's still a market for telegrams. Chalk it up to them being obsolete enough to be classified as 'retro' and thus cool I guess, I don't know. I suppose it's a moot point, since it's paying my bills. Anyway, you'll sign for it?"

"Uh... sure," CR said, still off-guard by the strangeness of the entire encounter. He accepted a pen from the deliveryman and signed the paper on his clipboard, returning both to the deliveryman. He then attempted to tear open the envelope, with little success.

"Say, this is sealed pretty tightly," CR said. "Do you by any chance have a letter opener on you?"

"As a matter of fact, I do," the deliveryman said, digging into his pockets for one. A second later, he came up with it, but instead of handing it to CR he instead moved quickly, slitting the unsuspecting homeowner's throat. CR fell to his knees, gasping for air that would not come.

"But... but why... not kill... me right a-... away?" he managed to choke out.

"All telegrams must be signed for," the deliveryman said with a flourish, and then walk out. He did not bother to see Crazed Rabbit expire in his own foyer.

Andres was out and enjoying the pleasant day along with the various flora and fauna of the Frontroom, taking in the sight of the golden sun dazzling its light on all the creatures of the earth. Yes, Andres was truly one with nature for the moment; he was mowing the lawn.

Mowing the lawn provided a nice bit of solitude for Andres. The ever-present sound of the motor conveniently tuned out any other annoying human and their annoying requests, allowing his thoughts to truly wander as he completed his task. In addition, it got him out of the house, and on a beautiful day such as this he jumped at the chance to get out and manicure the grass into uniform precision.

Andres didn't really have a set pattern for cutting the grass; he took whatever route fancied him that day. Today's route, as it would have it, had him cut a long stretch of grass while facing north. It was a very long stretch of grass, as a matter of fact. It often took Andres well over a minute to finish that stretch before turning the mower.

As he would have it, it only took well over a minute for someone to approach him from the south while (oddly) lugging a cooler, set the cooler down, take an icicle out of the cooler, and stab him with said icicle from said cooler. As Andres lay on his well-kept lawn, watching two puddles from his blood and the icicle form and then increase, the only thought that went through his head was that maybe the lawnmower's motor wasn't so pleasant after all. Maybe it was, as his wife had informed him on countless occasions, overly loud, obnoxious, and liable to make him miss something important.

In a certain office in the center of town...

"Hello?" the man said, picking up the phone. "Yes? What... oh... oh, no. O-okay. Yes." He hung up the phone and leaned back in his chair, sighing heavily. It seemed as if the weight of the word had just been dropped on him all at once. After about a minute of despair, the man rose from his chair and walked over to a section of wall. On it was a plaque, entitled "Esteemed Predecessors". Below the plaque was a picture of a man who, despite his cowl, looked very much like a lumberjack:

https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/images/avatars/staff/m/mod/Assassin68.gif

The man brushed aside the picture, for behind it was a hole in the wall. In that hole was a thick binder. He took it out of the wall and examined the cover. "In Case of Mafia Assault on Frontroom," it read.

"Right then," Chief of Police Lemur said to himself, "Let's do this."

Thirty minutes later, he had gathered everyone in the town square and prepared to make an announcement. "All right, folks," he began. "About thirty minutes ago, I received a report of there being two separate murders in the town. Unfortunately, Crazed Rabbit and Andres are both dead, CR courtesy of his throat being slit and Andres due to a stab wound. I have reliable information that these murders are mafia hits, meaning that they're trying to wipe out our town."

There was an audible gasp among the people in the town square. The Frontroom was the Kingdom of Peace and Love! Why would anyone want to assault it?

"However folks, remain calm. I do have a plan," Lemur said. "Now then..." he muttered to himself, thumbing through the binder. "Ah, yes, it says so right here. In cases like this, democracy is the best defense against annihilation. You all know each other, surely you'll be able to figure out who the two traitors are amongst yourselves better than honest police work can. Therefore, it will be up to you to smoke out the mafia and lynch them. Every day until the murders stop, you will vote for who you think is guilty. At the end of the day, whoever has the most votes is lynched. Got it?"

The villagers nodded. "Good, then the first day of voting begins. Let's hope it's the last day, too. Best of luck, everyone."

Renata's thing is appearing to be nice - which isn't difficult, because she is nice. But that doesn't make her any less ruthless. I know from long experience that she's as ruthless as they come, which makes it rather suspicious when she bases her vote on the ruthlessness of a kill.

Renata is basically correct in her analysis. I'm ruthless enough to murder those players I deem most dangerous in cold blood. I tend to - like Renata - leave players who have not played for a while be, but otherwise I have no scruples. Just look at me killing ATPG (who's really a nice guy) in Noblesse Oblige. And my goal was even to protect the town - but Pizza could be dangerous to me so he had to go.

Kagemusha, I don't see what your vote's there for, though. Pressure? I'm openly admitting (and did so in my last response to Renata as well) that it does look kind of like my style. And I'm okay with the town lynching me if it clears out some other things. But can we please pressure someone else also, so the day isn't lost?

Personally, I think Renata would be the type of person to frame me in this way, but it's too early to do anything but guessing quite at random.

The threat of possibly several people switching their votes onto someone unexpectedly is the only thing that keeps the mafia interested in watching the round unfold after the initial bandwagon turns out to be wrong.

Pigeon-holing ourselves onto one candidate makes manipulating the vote tally easier.

I will personally be switching my vote several dozen times in this game, if necessary.

A bit of misdirection on your part there.

For one thing, I didn't say your vote was bad, or that DE wouldn't do that kind of thing (I know he would).

And for another thing, you are suggesting that you wouldn't do that kind of thing, which is saying that you're not mafia, since the mafia actually did do it.

Yeah the other day I got thinking about it, where the game's just on a timer of ~16 turns, and the mafia just cuts through them. But that would just be boring for the mafia, they have to pay attention to active voters and if someone voted for them or their partner... so they can influence the ballot later on in the game.
