The Senate

I got the idea for this game actually from Europa Universalis: Rome.

The basic idea is to make sure your faction wins. There are 5 factions: Military, Civic, Mercantile, Religious, Populist. When signing up players must choose one of the factions and by adding 1 senator into your faction while reducing another factions senator.

Example:

+1 Military
-1 Populist

Military: 21
Civic: 20
Religious: 20
Mercantile: 20
Populist: 19Yes, I know that there have been games like these before. However, there are other features in this game that will be revealed during the game.

I can tell you that players popularity is just as important as the number of senators in the players faction.

I will reveal more about the game when each faction have at least one player.
I wish to start this on Monday if there is enough interest.

The Rules

1. There are turns that last 24 hours.
2. Player can vote once per hour.
3. Each turn Consul must be elected. To do it player must post Vote: Name.
4. Consuls powers:
1) Can once a day* give +2 to his faction while reducing the power of another faction by -2.
2) Can once a day* declare someones vote invalid.
3) Being a Consul will give some personal popularity.
5. Personal popularity shows how popular you are among the citizens. Higher popularity will give more power for that player.
6. Each faction will give certain bonuses to the players.
7. It is possible to kill other players. So, don't be surprised if you get PM stating that you are dead.
8. Killed players can join the game again 1 turn after they died.
9. It is possible for new people to join the game all the time but they can start voting only after I have accepted them.
10. There is more but that will be revealed during the game.
11. PM's from me can not be posted in the thread.

* - This should be read "once a turn". Consul can use that power once per his term and that is 1 turn.

Ibn-Khaldun
01-08-2011, 15:05
Beside the usual voting for your faction in order to gain control over Senate there is also personal popularity feature in this game. The more you help your faction the more you gain popularity. Higher popularity gives more options for players. What exactly you can do I will leave as a secret.

So, you have the main goal to help your faction gain power but also personal goals you must achieve. The winner of this game is the player who manage to fulfill all his goals fastest.

Ibn-Khaldun

Not sure that I get the concept. It seems that the obvious strategy would be to give +1 to your team every time (and you get more popularity from it, whatever that does),

But, okay I'll try.

I didn't realize we had to pick a side, but Populist is fine.

Won't factions with more players have an advantage?

Ibn-Khaldun
01-11-2011, 00:40
True. But that means factions with less people have to work with someone else if they want to fight against larger faction.

Edit: Also, you should consider that no one is here all the time. People live in different timezones so.. use that advantage. ~;)

You need your own faction to be the largest possible, but in order to gain influence for it, you need to remove it from someone else. Tactics as to who to make enemies of may be applied at leisure.

Commander Secura
of the Military Faction

Lords and ladies of the Senate!

While there will surely be no doubts that our glorious nation will eventually succumb to the hegemony of a single faction, it is obvious that such responsibility cannot be bestowed upon the Populists and their anarchic notions of equality among all our citizens!

These are not the soldiers who keep our lands safe, gladly offering their lives in defence of our people. Nor are they the clergy who provide the solice and faith of our Lord to those who seek it.

They are not the bureaucrats who keep the clockwork of our society well-oiled, nor are they the merchants who ensure we remain a beacon of free trade to our neighbours and fill the state's coffers with gold.

No, they are the so-called ordinary folk; the farmers, blacksmiths, servants, courtesans... these people should not be meddling in politics and I suggest we create a motion to remove this faction from the Senate entirely!

I would like to concur with previous representatives and add that it is often our faith in the Lord that helps us overcome great trials in life, and thus I am also willing to support the pious God Emperor in his bid for Consul!

Being the voice of the people is all well and good, we are a nation of free speech after all... but the common man has no idea how to run the state.

He has no knowledge of warfare and the tactical nous required to best the opposition, no idea about the subtle economics that our merchants use to monopolise the global market in our favour and no inclinations towards the inner-working of our nation's administration.

He is, however, aware of the right amount of time required to bake the perfect loaf of bread, the precise angle to cleave calf meat from the bone while minimising waste or the exact distance from his home to the public baths.

Knowing such things is all well and good when it comes to their own lives, but such knowledge is useless in the face of running an entire nation.

Lords and ladies of the Senate!

While the Populist movement continues to gather momentum and grow in popularity with the people, it is here in these very halls that their true contributions to the state are shown.

Thus far we have seen their representatives willing to denounce our holy men with slanderous calls of heresy and evil... are these truly the words of the common man? Or, for that matter, the words of those we can entrust the running of our vast empire?

What say you, the merchants of our fine empire? Your silence does you no credit or justice here.

Representative of the Populists!

You say that the people require a voice, but to what end? Are they not content with everything that we have provided?

Their lands are bountiful with produce, kept safe from barbarians by the military and their goods bought by our merchants. Criminality is a non-issue, taxation has been at a constant low for years now and societal laws are more lenient than ever!

These halls discuss diplomatic, administrative and religious matters beyond the common man; so why the requirement for a voice?

Additionally, your concerns about my interest in the Senate are unwarranted and, if I didn't know any better, sound highly accusational. And I had hoped that you would have stopped at our clergy, how foolish of me!

I am a protector of the realm, and it is largely thanks to the efforts of my soldiers and I that this proud republic stands, in addition to the fine work of the administration, our merchants and the church.

I have no designs on controlling or dissolving the Senate, or any other nonsensical notions like it; the Republic will remain as such until the Senate and the people decide otherwise.

"Commander Secura,

"It is the duty of myself and my colleagues of my party to make sure that senate never loses touch with that which is its raison d'etre; The People. Need I remind my fellow senators why we are here? The Senate represents the people! We are here to act out the will of the people. That is our privilege and our duty. And I am here on behalf of those who are not lucky enough to have the law, the sword, the gold or the gods to speak for them; I am here to see to it that the Head of the Republic, the Senate, never loses its connection to its body, The People.

"You are right that many of the people whom I represent would not know how to fare in these halls, which is what makes my presence here important; It is through I that the common man speaks. I am who grants him his voice in the matters that will surely shape his life and that of his family for generations to come.

"I apologize if I have used a rough tone with some of you, fellow colleagues, but it angers me to see the ideals of the Republic of Rome so questioned. On that note, allow me to add that I pay the same thanks to our proud soldiers that I do to our priests, our judges and tribunes, our merchants of all trades, and all other good Roman citizens; They serve the republic through each their own required role, and as you are here on behalf of our legions, so am I here on behalf of all those men who makes Rome what it is each day; from the lowliest cobbler and fisherman to the very top of society amongst the nobilitia, their voice lends mine its strength.

It is your duty, first and foremost, to uphold the integrity of the state; the lives of our people are certainly of the upmost importance, but they are nothing compared to the sacrosanctity of Roma itself.

You mention priveleges, but that is not why we're here; we are here because we are the greatest minds in our respective fields, which is precisely what is required to run our glorious republic. The common man would be here himself, if he was only a patron of the collegia rather than the taverna.

The Populists offer nothing to this Republic.

The Merchants offer goods and services, and pay more than their fair share of taxes. We also don't need to leech off of the state. The Military which we pay for defends our very lives, and allows the peace which results in trade. Without our soldiers and generals, we could be invaded and our goods stolen by some barbarians. The Civic-minded among us pave our roads and build our economy from the ground up, and keep our government functioning. The religious keep our people righteous and fair-minded.

The odd ones out are the bloody populists. Filthy worms, that's all they are! Drawing graffiti on the palace walls, stealing from the granary, snatching goods off of our carts... they live in squalor and filth and aren't even fit enough to fight for Rome.

What manner of men are these? They're not men, they're rodents!

Why, pray tell, have you decided to neuter the military arm of the Republic like so? Have we not supported the faith enough?

A more pressing matter is at hand which bears your judgement; if you observe the numbers of each party, you will notice that two members of the bureaucracy have mysteriously switched to the merchant cause overnight!

I have never heard of this Clemenceau fellow, the name sounds Gaulish however and we all know their approach to politics involves throwing root vegetables at one another and admiring their ability to cultivate peculiar body scents garnered from a lack of visiting the public baths.

At any rate, this Clemenceau's statement regarding generals is foolish, as is your desire to cite it as an excuse to neuter our influence; certainly there would be little point fighting a war without the brave soldiers who dedicate their lives to the cause, but where would those soldiers be without the direction and neverending inspiration that only comes from a strong leader?

And what stronger leadership could there be than a commander?

4. Consuls powers:

I don't see how this can be misinterpret

However, like I said it was my screw up then your vote will stand but I will change that part in the rules so that this power can be used once a turn.

I don't see it as a screw-up on your part Ibn; I knew exactly what it meant, but then it could just be a native English thing?

A rumor spread in Rome that Askthepizzaguy was involved with some foreigners from east. However, soon it was discovered that it was Romanic who had started this rumor.

Our beloved Consul, God Emperor, held a triumph after the army had destroyed a barbarian horde in north. The fact that he was not even close to the battle is not important. Commander Secura
of the Military Faction
Consul of the Senate

Lords of the Senate!

Firstly, I thank you for honouring me with the position of Consul and I will be certain to put it's powers to good use; furthering the just and righteous cause of our noble republic!

As you are no doubt aware, our forces were successful in our campaign against the barbaric heathens on the northern reaches of our borders; a small number lie dead to the savage tactics of the enemy, but for every life sacrificed by our courageous soldiers, many more have been saved here in Roma.

May they be remembered as heroes for their unquestionable loyalty to the republic and may they serve as a reminder of our own duties.

Unfortunately, this hard-fought victory has been tarnished in these very halls, marred by our former Consul who publicly paraded through Roma as though he was responsible for our triumph.

Let it be known that the military will not tolerate any man claiming the glory of victory for his own when it is a victory for the entire empire; I hereby call for punitive repercussions against the Religious faction so that they might learn from their mistake.

This is pretty much how I feel about the religious faction right now.

First we supported you as Consul, and never harmed you. Then, when we were in trouble, you kicked us in the teeth, and stole from us in the night.

What manner of men are these in "priestly" robes? You have betrayed everyone who has called you a friend.

I still have ill feelings about the Populists and their slanderous ways, but their treachery was exposed and they will pay the shame of it. Now, man-God, you shall seek redemption and forgiveness, or seek to find yourself on the streets begging for coin.

Thank you master merchant. I'm glad we've put our differences aside.

Would you believe that just now, the Religious leader offered me a bribe to attack you? I refused immediately. How outrageous!

I believe it from this man.

He's an opportunist. The Mercantile faction was an easy target in the last session, and he happily joined (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?132435-The-Senate&p=2053246683&viewfull=1#post2053246683) in the pile-on. I am still grumbling about how particularly dishonorable that was, considering how we supported him.

It is one thing to attack one's enemies; it's quite another to attack one's friends when they are in need.

I can understand your furry master merchant.. I can understand it a lot, So I will be honest with you. I am the weakest faction in this game by far and so I have to adjust myself to that. I would have remained loyal to the traders to the end. TO THE END ! , if it wasn't because you had been a gone a terrible lot , and was on the brink of destruction. So I will do as you say ! I shall seek redemption in the eyes of God and in the eyes of my former master

Romanics story about me offering a bribe is ofc nonesense. I would never try to make alliances with people who seems to want my head, So Romanic is lying... but then again that isn't the first time is it slanderous Romanic?? :p

And yet the representative from the merchants fails to add that he actually coerced two members of my own party over to his side with promises of untold wealth, only to then have two of his own have their heads turned by the former Consul's false claims of responsibility for a military victory.

I am not condemning you, Pizza... but please do not label yourself as put-upon when you are as guilty of underhanded tactics as he is.

In case this is not clear, the writeup states that two members of Military were bribed away, which means they went over to Mercantile. Then God Emperor's triumph stole those two away from Mercantile over to Religious.

If you cut out the middle man, the Religious faction has basically stolen from Military, which is why Mercantile isn't feeling my wrath. xD

First of all, man-wearing-dress, I object to being called a "furry".

Secondly, you are the weakest by your own actions. You had the support of the mercantile faction, and you lost it by deed. I should forgive you because you merely wanted to kill a sick man? Put me out of my misery, eh? No harm done then.... Guess we can count you among our true friends, for granting us such a merciful end.

As for your accusation that the Populists are slandering you, I leave it to them to deal justice to you for such a lie, or to you to deal them justice for spreading such a rumor. Given past behaviors, I have no reason to believe your version.

In this case, I am not responsible. It may have been slashandburn who did so; and without my knowledge to boot. I never got any message.

I wondered why our faction didn't suffer a decrease from the Religious attack, and where the Military people went.

I can only offer my most sincere apologies for the action, as I personally feel our ties to Military faction are our strongest ties, and I think jeopardizing such relations is a terrible idea. I condemn such a move.

I would ask that slashandburn restore what was lost to the Military faction when he votes next.

I forgot about the whole slander case. This kind of behaviour is unacceptable for men of the Senate, even if it is against, sigh, the Merchants.
