Hi all,
Great job there flip
Just for the record the first beta for the v.2 is out.
Some decisions had to be made so there were steps forward and backward.
So there is going to be a grater time span for this one. It will start in 750BC as before. The Ionia will be filled with barbarian tribes ... so you have to push them back and colonise it
High will start at 650BC. The Phrygians at this time will be very cornered by the Lydians. The Ionian colonies will be spread between Athenians, Corinthians and Argians.
Late will start at 550BC. A huge Persian Army at the East would hard press the Lydians. Greeks will be out of Ionia. Hopefully the Persians will blast though Lydia in to Greece.
To win you will need to capture the "Greek World" this means the Greece, the provinces around Bosporus, and the Coast of Asia Minor.
Game will end at 400BC.
Cons ...
1. We can't make the Persians popup at a date
2. I have to say this ... no Rise of Macedon (ok don't shoot ... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif )
You will get all the things flip has done and a far more complex game ... not to mention Difficult one.
There are tow things I plan next ... one is a division of the map with 99 provinces you can have a sneak peek here (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/Ref_RegionNames.png). If this goes as expected (well)
The other has to do with the Rise of Macedon and Roman conquest.
I hope you will not flame me for this ... http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif but you will have to wait just a bit for these Sariza troops. You will be able to use the Yphicratian ones ... (if you tech up in Athens at late period).

Where can I d/l the v2 beta?
Hello all,
I am here just to post a comment for another italian guy who cannot post here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif
here his comment
I would the author(s) of the mod “Hellenic TW” (particularly komninos if it’s possible) to know some problems about this mod, in order to enjoy the new release 2.0, without them
Of course, some of them are still known by you, but I’ve annotated them anyway :
1 ) There’s no differences between the icons of the “light sfendoniste” and the “sfendoniste” ;
2 ) The “Hippies akontiteste” (skirmisher cavalry) are too weak in hand to hand, even if they hound enemy troops in rout ;
3 ) In some provinces I may build the Cancelry, the Connestable palace and so on, in another I may not, why ? Is it an intentional choice ?
4 ) Some buildings are useless and the player spends his money in vain : is it better to remove them from the game ?
5 ) Churches and similars should to be removed from the game, or at least replaced with other buildings (pagan temples for example) ;
6 ) The high general incomes and the too low costs of the armies generate profits too high (I was been able in my last campaign to own over 400,000 florins with only 6 provinces !http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ;
7 ) The influence of the king, when the kingdom it’s still small, is very low (from 2 to 1) : it should be at least 3, in order to not compromise too, the loyalty of the generals (I was been able to win my last campaign, only corrupting the enemy armies, because I had a lot of money but I might not create new armies cause the high disloyalty of the generals) ;
8 ) Some units are taken from the original units of VI : will we see in the future all units designed properly for HTW as well as you did for “Enomotia Hoplitons”, “Polemistes” and others ?
9 ) In some cases I was been able to create a shipbuilder althought I haven’t created a port : I think this is a bug
That’s all regarding to me, anyway I compliment to you for the great work you did, really good mod, and I’m waiting for your kindly answer for my notes.
See you soon.
HorayIts out or maybe I should wait a bit longer till the beat is out of the way I can hold off a little longer Roman conquest? horay for that too I think it will be a very interesting addition later on btw what version of vi is needed?
Hello Komninos,
finally i'm able to post in this forum (i have to thank TosaInu for having resolved my problem) and now i can congratulate to you for the excellent work and the brilliant idea to locate the game in the Ancient Greece.
I've seen that the new release 2.0 is out and i would like to know if the notes posted by DAEVORN for me, find an answers in the new release.
Thanks for all.
See you soon.

Hi CID007 http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
So lets see the list
1 ) There’s no differences between the icons of the “light sfendoniste” and the “sfendoniste” ;
This will be addressed in v.2.0 I think ... flip?
2 ) The “Hippies akontiteste” (skirmisher cavalry) are too weak in hand to hand, even if they hound enemy troops in rout ;
Yes I have seen this ... I will look in to it so expect a solution in V.2.0
3 ) In some provinces I may build the Cancelry, the Connestable palace and so on, in another I may not, why ? Is it an intentional choice ?
4 ) Some buildings are useless and the player spends his money in vain : is it better to remove them from the game ?
5 ) Churches and similars should to be removed from the game, or at least replaced with other buildings (pagan temples for example) ;
Yes all these will be dealt with in V.2.0 there is a new building list (tech tree) and also new graphics for these.
6 ) The high general incomes and the too low costs of the armies generate profits too high (I was been able in my last campaign to own over 400,000 florins with only 6 provinces ;
Most of this income is trade income ... you can lose it any time. Also units are mostly high priced. But I can see to it.
7 ) The influence of the king, when the kingdom it’s still small, is very low (from 2 to 1) : it should be at least 3, in order to not compromise too, the loyalty of the generals (I was been able to win my last campaign, only corrupting the enemy armies, because I had a lot of money but I might not create new armies cause the high disloyalty of the generals) ;
hmmm ... I have seen that in order to increase the influence of the general you have to have some or a lot of high value heroes ... it is in the pipeline but no promises.
8 ) Some units are taken from the original units of VI : will we see in the future all units designed properly for HTW as well as you did for “Enomotia Hoplitons”, “Polemistes” and others ?
flip is on to it.
9 ) In some cases I was been able to create a shipbuilder althought I haven’t created a port : I think this is a bug
Most probably ... a VI bug since I was using that building list ... I don't think you will have that now.

Antalis and all,
At the moment it is very early even for the beta. This is to coordinate me and flip. If you install it you will have many problems since images are missing and several graphics. Also I took a decision just some days ago to lengthen to campaign so I am redoing some parts at this moment. When I will have all the files in an OK state I will upload them and flip will upload all the images and then make the fist public beta. So just wait a bit longer.
Sorry.

I guess the one with the horses is for the stadion, the first one is for a fortress, right?
Antalis, the horses where for Stables, but I may consider your sugestion. Here we have some space for recriation, imagination and subjectivity. Its not final yet. I'm also waiting for the final builds list. But I assure that in all images there will be some historical aproach. Can you see the one for the brothel?Quite interpretative.
Most of the images are 3D reconstructions from arqueological projects in Greece.
I need also to change the events parchments. The file is Epic.bif, and its inside the campmap folder.
Anyone knows about a book with historical events of greece, engravings or ilustrations( XIX's style)? Any ideas?

Har, har ...
OK ... I got bug report from flip ...so I will fix these so you don't get a series of CTDs ... And re-upload it ... then post the link. You will need some parts of the v.1.0 to run it since it will not have map directory so it would be best to install it over v.1.0 for the moment. BTW ... this is a beta after all so it would be best used by people who know how to bug-track.
Just some work review ... or to be done list ...
- Ship images and Stats ... this needs some head scratching
- some work with the unit sizes since Duke Johns units are a bit smaller.
- Some fixing here and there
- better hero files ... some more head scratching
- New and improved formations ... even more head scratching
...
- some more fixing stuff
- introducing some new ideas that some of you will pop up, apart from the Macedonian Phalanx it will be a later addition (when I get the unit biff from DJ would be a good day to start that).
That’s about it ... not much is it ... well don't tell my wife about it.

I will not talk more than I have to here ... but just keep on looking for the announcement of v.2.0.
Yes It is going to be in two Zipped files actually that would be extracted in the MTW main directory ...
Yes there is a new "complicated" tech tree. Also provinces would be a bit more unstable.
There are new buildings also.
It is going to me ~30 to 40MB download too ... for V.3.0 I will try to find a distributor and send it on CDs http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

Anyway i don't think that downloading 30÷40 mb would be a problem (more or less 1 hour of downloading with 44 kbit/s i believe), the biggest difficult i met was the fact of not to have a clear instructions that lead me step by step to a complete installation.
I don't advice you to distribute on cd your new release... i'm not quite sure it would be a good idea....you may also have more files zipped, if it is a problem to have one huge file, but you should create a main file zipped (as you've just done for v.1) that include intructions step by step, complete, and, maybe, use self-extracting zipped files, that automatically overwrite the originals, only in order to make less manual the installation.

Hi all,
This is for those of you that have some modding experience and time for debugging ... The HTW V.2.1 Beta is here (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/HTW-V2-beta.zip).
Things we are looking for are files missing, descriptions unit behaviour, game balance ... new ideas ... etc
You will need the two map images (TGAs) form V.1.0 and all the portraits flip and Antalis made that go in the Campmap folder. Then it should go with not much problems. If you stumble on some then check for something missing send me a PM so I can look for it too. As the bugs are found I will upload the new files till all is 100% there and good by that time flip would have uploaded the graphical files for it so the step to V.2.1 would be nice and easy.
BTW do it in a clean MTW installation cause several things will be overwritten from the default files (castles at least).
Thanks to all of you.

No ... there is a known bug faced by many modders with the dead bodies ... I think there is a solution by deleting the MTW part of that file but till now I didn’t have any chance to test it. Though now with the DJs units we might have to make a new TGA too.
If you're interested, I've explained the cause and solution of the problem in this thread: Solution "no corpses" problem (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=13319).
Anyways I'm about to install and check out the latest version of HTW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Yes, please fix the problem with no dead bodies.
I started a custom battle and had terrible FPS But then I decided to restart my computer since it had already loaded quite a number of programs before http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif Then I started another battle and my FPS was good again. I mean WOW those units look really awesome. The way the Spartans Hoplites fought was AWESOME They are very deadly.
Can't wait for the final version

a few problems ive noted - these map be just me
first tho id like to fall on my knees and kiss komminos's boots and shake the hand of everyone who helped make this (cept Duke John hes god and ill stick to worshiping him)
now problems which may be just me
1) Banners dont show the faction symbol they show a black square
2) The stoa is a catholic building but it starts off in the Orthodox greek areas - and for some reason cannot find an image for it so displays a question mark bif and come sup with an error every turn and when u click on the Region - makes Orthodox impossible to play
thats it so far mainly because the damn 2nd error make sit hard to play a Campaign thru - the custom battles rule - and as soon as i finnish playing with the dead cords so bodies remain will be even better - good job guyz
Hi Sir,
For the banners, yoy need copy for now the ones from version 1.0. They are not included in this beta. Go to ...battle/flags/Hellenic, copy the flags to same directory in 2.0. There will be new ones in the graphics pack for HTW 2.0. However it will still missing the flags for Persians and Peoneans.
The orthodox thing, lets wait for Komninos answer. If you have Portraits pack from me and Antalis you may copy the Catholic directory for Orthodox directory.
see you

Hi Sir Moody,
Have you downloaded the latest one ~14MB ... This should have the images of the buildings ... if not they should be there for the Catholics and copy them to the Orthodox. I will also try to check this out.
For the two flags that are missing copy two other flags and rename them.

Hi:
1.) Some castles have no mapimage: The castlehilly06 and 07.
2.) I had a siege against a fort and decided to attack it (I believe it was Kephallenia) and then I got a castle with the small walls.
I don´t think that this was the right castlemap for a fort.
The stockages got the right castlemap.
Hi
I'm new to the board,but a vet at playing Total War
Installed the latest beta of this great mod units are super
Being playing the campaign since Friday,I've come across all the bugs so far mentioned, to play the campaign without the error I used Gnome's editor and removed "Catholic" From row 15 "specific religion" Royal palace sorry it's not a fix, but helps you to play the campaign all the way to the end without to much hic ups and that;s what beta testing is for
Comments and these are mine and in no way am I fualting a GREAT MOD
I found to many ships the map was covered in them,
To many cavalry units in battles played a battle against the Boeoteans in the campaign 3/4 of their army was cavalry "Hippis Akontistes" since the Greeks didn't use cavalry units extensively it does seem unlikly this would happen, I know from playiny NTW it suffer the same The Ai buying nearly all cavalry units.
could I suggest that ships cost more 30% support cost increased to the same or even more,
The same with cavalry units increase both the cost and support cost aswel as reduceing troop size ie from 80 to 60 60 to 40 40 to 20.
Is it true to history that the Greeks always revolted not very loyal generals all way through the campaign I had very unloyal generals had to kill off some of my own lads to stop revolts, found the trade and pop settingings made the campaign run along great.
Troop stats played good playing against equal armys with same troop types tatics did play a very important role in the victory. not always mine.
Hope this is of some help can't wait for my xmas present V2 of course
Thanks 4 a great mod
Hi all,
I managed to change the position of shields of version 2.1 beta. I told Komninos their shape were rader oval. I prefered the shields from version HTW 1.0. So, here's my work on that using a wonderfull tool, SPM from Welly's.
This tool gived me a nice feature, wich was shields down in stand position, and shields up for walk and fight. I gess this is new in MTW. Also I added a new image for the DA_hoplites shields, based in a historical shield. I corrected also other things like missing shields (sshoot position)in Cretan archers and other type of archers. Polemiste and Warband units also had shield changes. Some screens:

Hi all,
This has gone excellent ... with the exception that my free time for modding was reduced to 0 ... I will take up notes of all the things said here and try to fix them.
One thing about versioning ...
V.2.0 was the original with all the new goodies (tech tree, units bifs ... etc)
V.2.1 is the next step that sees the introduction of the Persians and takes till 400BC.
There are two things in V.2.1 to note.
1. I can’t make the Persians appear in 550BC and over run the Lydians ... ask CA for that.
2. I was reluctant at giving the Athenians the Yficratian hoplite since it should appear very late ~450BC and it would give an advantage to the Athenian Player. Even if production req. are high. If you would like to see this pike unit ... tell me about it.
======================================================
Antalis,
thanks for the images ...
I will see what happens with the castles ... the thing is that I use a different numbering that the original so I have to check that too.
======================================================
flip,
I have converted to your shields ... one thing to mention ... the one used for Ekdromos (smaller one) is the correct size ... the others are way to big so use that. for Polemiste looks good (I did a -20% from both sides and +10% to the upper and lower part).
The Dark age looks great ... I was trying to find an image like that ... I will send you the psp image (rendered shield) for the shield so you can make it look more 3D like.
=======================================================
youone,
I have to check what happens to the Royal palace & Royal Court. I use it to separate the Barbarians from the rest. If I remember well the Royal palace should only be Catholic ... and the image is standard for both Catholics and Orthodox I will check (when I get some time).
The Hippis Akontistes (javelin cavalry) are a pain in the b... same as all cheap units ... I will try to see how to over come this ... increasing there cost is something I don't like much but it is drastic.
Ships ... wait for the new beta ... just read the list above.
========================================================
That’s all ... for now,
Thank you guys

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif Dudes, first of all v2.1 beta rocksJust some questons the new map with names,the new building pictures,new ship pictures,unit descriptions(Persions) and those awesome looking shields from Flip are they going to be in the final v2.1 version or will we be able to seperately download them like the maps,portraits from Antalis/Flip in v1.Played all weekend with different factions and some bugs like the cav and ship problem,missing descriptions etc are rightly noticed.I think there is also a balance problem wih the Asiatic factions(Lydians,Persians) first of all there provincial income is far to low, when one of the Hellenic factions has like 5 or 6 provinces they can mount big armies and constantly invade your coasts.They already have better units so the only way to beat them is with numbers and tactics but you need to be able to build up your forces first.You spend all your money on mercenaries to tackle the constant invasions also because the Greek have more income they constantly bribe your armies.A other way(wich works fine if your a Greek faction) is building up your navy and protect your coastline but the ships are to weak and it takes to long (no money and time).So i suggest more income,more infrastructure from the beginning,stronger ships and a small navy from the start like your Greek counterparts,more loyal generals(a couple of 1 or 2 star in the beginning like the Greek),less revolts so better loyalty in your core provinces from the start.In all the campaigns i played i never saw one Asiatic faction cross the BosporusThe Greek factions need more heat from the East http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif Zimoa
Hi Komninos http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif ;
i've tried in this weekend the new release that you have uploaded, and now i pass to notice you the good and the bad points of it :
1) ok for the improvements on the graphics units over the general map and also in the battle fields (very good);
2) ok for the speed of ports and ships creation : make the game more quick ;
3) there's no differences of costs between different ships This is no correct because the militar strenght is different from a type of ship to one other, and i must not pay the same cost of production
4) the colours of backgrounds of the flags onto castles and in the alliance state, correspond to each other, but they are different from what are shown on the shields of the armies shown on the general map; i add that sometimes don't correspond even the symbol of the flag.
Example :
- the Thessalian onto the castle and on alliance state, are green and orange, on the shield armies are white and blue.
Only some factions like : Macedonians, Athenians, Boeoteans, Corintheans, and maybe some one other, are correct
5) Some types of unit didn't manage to hold ordered rows, but after a little time they scattered themselves (Archers, Warbands, and others) ;
6) Loyalty of the generals too lows (this problem is just known by you) ;
7) In the start of a campaign, when i try to assault a castle hold by rebels, in the siege i countered a absurd castle with an impossible fortification, and a keep above a very high Acropolis, even it well fortificated : i don't think it's too proper for that age (not even if had strong siege machines i could win the siege !http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
8) In the custom battles, when i buy armies and honours, or shields or weapons, the amount of money increase instead reduce http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif That's very strange
9) The carry of the Rodian-Staff Slingers is too long (absurd) and the strenght too They must be reorganized
I think i've told you all....if i'll find something new i advice you.
However congratulations for the work...see you http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Hi all,
I have started to work on the bugs reported today ... so ...
Started with the castles ... they need renaming to bring them in accordance with the new building production files. Actually dropped that for now bit later.
Unit descriptions fixed and OK and here the are:
["PersianRoyalGuard"] {"The Royal Guard was a core unit that protected the Emperor and the palace. They were taken from the ranks of the Immortals and only the strongest and most loyal warriors entered their ranks. In the battle they would ride with the King and fight beside him."}
["Imortals"] {"This is the core unit of the Persian army. This unit is composed from the Persian Elite and are devoted to the Emperor. Most of them have a first or second degree of relation to the Emperor. As all Persian troops the Immortals have little to no armour and they go in to battle dressed up in fine clothes. Spartans mocked them for there girlish looks but they are as good as any other warrior on the field and there bows can kill at long ranges."}
["Kardakes"] {"These are perhaps the only heavy troops of the Persian army though compared to the Greeks they have no armour at all. Their large pavise like shields give them protection from enemy arrows but worth little in hand to hand combat. They would usually form a protective line in front of the archers."}
["Sparabara"] {"The archers formed the core of the Persian forces. These troops take their name from the preferred combat formation of the Persians. Their pavise shields give excellent protection against arrows or light missiles and their composite bows have both the range and the power to devastate the enemy at a distance."}
["Takabara"] {"These light troops fight in open formation with javelins and spears. They are good flanking force and their javelins can cause damage even to the most heavily armed units. Living them unattended though might be deadly since they lack the training and the armour to withstand close quarters actions."}
["PrsianHorceArchers"] {"From the deserts of the east in Iran these horse men have excellent skills. They can ride and use their composite bows very effectively. They would flank the enemy units and rain arrow fire on them braking there formations and causing panic. They are also capable light cavalry that can be charged on weakened and fleeing enemies."}
Also changed:
["AbyssinianGuard_desc"]
{"Abyssinians have been guarding Egyptian rulers for centuries they are big and very strong wielding large axes in the battle filed. They are very dangerous for any unit to face them. There draw back is they have little or no armour fro protection so better keep them away from arrow fire."}
["BerberCamel_desc"]
{"Medianite Camelier are recruited in the south of the Persian Empire. South East of Sinai lays a large desert where these strange creatures live. Medianites have managed to tame them and use them to cross the desert. They are capable in hand-to-hand combat against similar light cavalry, and their camels are an advantage as many horses are unwilling to go too close because of the smell"}
["NegroSpearmen_desc"]
{"Nubian spearmen come from the dark continent. South to the land of the Pharaohs lays Nubia. There warriors are brave and strong and some years back have overrun the Egyptians. Now they serve the King of Kings. There are excellent troops that can take most opponent easily but they might face some problems with the heavily armed Greeks."}
Rebalanced the mod but tests have do be done again on that. Now most Eastern and barbarian units field ~120-150men.
Willingness to produce cavalry units has been drastically reduced. Some Catholic and Orthodox personalities have been left unchanged to represent the Thessalians and Macedonians that used Cavalry units and Aetolians for that preferred the lighter and more mobile units.

To test the new balance I conducted some field tests ...
Extracts from General Tisafernis memoirs:
I found the Athenian army in a flat land. They were 5 units of there hoplites. I quickly gave the orders to field the troops. My three units of 128 Kardakes formed the center in 4 line deep formation while the Nubians covered the flanks and behind them the Takabaras. In the rear line five units of Sparabaras in deep formations and in the rear a bit spread the two units of Immortals.
I decided to bring the army closer since the Greeks were reluctant. As we neared I ordered the troops to hold and slide to the right but misinterpreted by a junior officer the army turned and exposed the left flank. Disaster followed as the Greeks charged the field on my left as I tried to reorganize the army the left flank gave up. I brought the units from the right and attacked the Greeks in the right while trying to swing some units in there rear. Also committed the Sparabaras in to battle and the Immortals. The Athinians were now hard pressed but I could see them carving there way though my units. Many broke and regrouped but were rooted again. At the end of the day I barely managed to save my head.
Athenians 340 dead
Persians 1465 dead

Extracts from General Tisafernis memoirs:
We regrouped at a nearby fort. The units were brought back to there original strength. We moved again in the field that one month ago we were decimated. I found the same general on the opposite side with his units ... no mistakes will be made this day.
Two units of Sparabaras formed in the front three lines deep.
The Kardakes and Nubians formed in the same way as the last time.
Finaly the two lines with the Sparabaras in front and the Immortals in the rear.
We walked the field slowly and stopped half way to them.
The front line Sparabaras started firing and soon the rest. The Greeks shifted their attack to my right. This exposed the flanks to arrow fire. Finally they charged the field and attacked. Two units went to the right wing, two in the center and one in the left. This allowed the Nubians and Takabaras to flank their right wile the Takabaras flanked there left.
By this time the front line units were on the verge of collapsing so the Sparabaras were committed. The Nubians crushed on their right wing and the Takabaras were sent in the center.
Unfortunately the left wing gave up and the Greeks managed to blast though.
In the left they were overwhelmed and rooted.
The center was barely holding as the left wing hoplites swung to the center. I brought the rest of the units from my left to the center while two Sparabaras and one Immortal unit were firing at them.
Greeks were taking many casualties but they were still holding and devastating my troops. And the Center gave away to there pressure. Even though some units have regrouped to charge them from the rear they were slained mercilessly and rooted once more.
Victory was near though.
Only a small unit remained and still fighting while a small contingent of 20 men was with there general and thirty more near by. I though at them all my reserves. The second unit screened my force while there general charged my Immortals. Can’t say that this felt well I charged with 108 Immortals in my unit at them. They were taking apart my unit like a pack of mad wolfs.
Finally the unit that screened the rest of my forced gave way and all attacked there General. Unfortunately a small unit appeared in the left of the fighting and came to save there General.
His handfull of men were slained to the last and this last unit was rooted soon after.
Athenians 394 dead, 66 captured
Persians 996 dead
Komninos,
hoplites shields reverted to the Ekdromos position. I also found that the shields were too big.
Now something that will be hard to fix. The swords positions of Polemistes, Skythan Warband, and probaly others, are wrong. This is because DJs bif units dont have coordinates positions for that weapons.
The "increase florins" error in custom battles. I noticed that since the first versions of HTW. The bug is still there. Sometimes, when we almost piked all possible units and florins amount is in "0", if we start to change the troops valour the amount of cash begins to rise. to fix.
Thracian campaign usually gets Illyrian units from the start. Is that normal?
DJs made available some files from is unfinished mod. Are we gonna profit some of he's nice work in cavalry units and maccedonian hoplites?

I really increase valour in custom battles so I have not seen this but it flipped me out. Have to find what is causing this, till now I have no idea.
DJs units will be used yes but I have to work on them before we do. Luckily he has done exactly two horse units which is what I have left open in my custom folders http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif . He has also done a nice work with the interface that we can include and also campmap castle images.
I have to check the sword/mace coordinates of the new units and see if he has done some work on them ... from his pics of ATW it looks like he has and if this is the case then we are going to convert to those ... my coordinates are s..t.
Illyrians, Peoneans, Thracians and Phrygians are closely related (from what I have read) so they share some units.
Zimoa,
Screen shots would be great and some extras for production. It has been some time since my last attempt to build a home page for anything so can't help much there. You can grab some of the units in Review panel bif and use there descriptions in a unit sector. You can get the images also I have put some pages (19 I think) back. And a comments & suggestions sector would be also great.

Hello everybody,
I am glad you like the graphics I made for A:TW. However I think it's a bit of a shame that the shields entirely cover up the BIFs. And being round from all sides is not right, you never look straight at the shield, it's always from an angle. So the shield should be oval like, it makes the unit more 3-dimensional and thus realistic.

Will the dead body problem be fixed till Xmas?
Sir Moody
12-16-2003, 13:41
Spartan Hoplites fought for other greek states as mercanaries commonly so ive set them to be mercanaries and i think it makes the mod play a whole lot nicer - they are incredable expensive to hire and maintain so i use them for single battles and they can seriously swing the balence of power
on the dead page cord ive begun work on giving them bodies - so far they all just have the default peasant body and some dont get that (working on it) once i have them all with bodies ill work on giving them more related bodies ie Beserker bodies for the Barbarians and Armoured bodies for the Armoured guyz - think ill stick with peasant bodies for the hoplites for now as none of the dead bodies look remotely like DJ's great hoplites
on the shields of the hoplites i agree with DJ that they should be oval but currently they are too oval and should be a little bit more circle
apart from that once i deleted the builidng causing problems from the startpos file it runs like a dream and playing the campaign is exellent
so all in all i think ive overcome my Lazy vice again
>>Hello everybody,
I am glad you like the graphics I made for A:TW. However I think it's a bit of a shame that the shields entirely cover up the BIFs. And being round from all sides is not right, you never look straight at the shield, it's always from an angle. So the shield should be oval like, it makes the unit more 3-dimensional and thus realistic.
Welcome back DJs, we all apreciate your work.
3D hoplite shields its impossible. See the screens I posted here:
link (http://www.totalwar.org/cgi-bin/forum/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=5;t=8096;st=550)
I explained my point of view to Komninos. Because they are big, MTW engine dont give them the correct rendering. Most of the times the shield apears a oval shape, and we lost the impact of the hoplite units have on ground. I managed also to give shields 2 positions, stand position and walk/charge position wich is nice.

Hi Sir Moody:
Its great to hear that this problem with the dead bodys will be fixed http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif
If you want to give the Hoplites and the other units from DJ the right dead body image: At frame 8 of theire bifs, there are dead bodys as images from every Hoplit and Spartan, also from the Peasants.
These are the following Bifs: Custom 1, Fullpar_H, HIPIArSH.
Please open also the other new units from DJ: The Macedonian Infantry and Cavalry, also the Hoplit Cavalry to make the dead body problem fixed.
You can download them at DJ´s tavern.

ok i have the dead page sorted now and im in the proess of testing it - theres a lot of units to test tho and currently they all have either peasant or hobilar death pics - ill work on it after im sure they all have pics then ill start work on pics that make more sense
as for editing the dead page cords.... im not very good at pic editing it would be better if someone edited it and ill do the rest
Hi all, i'd like to have some feedback in some shields new positions. this was made with Welly's SPM utility.

Hi: The shadows of some of the units are coloured: One whole unit had a blue shadow, one other whole unit a red shadow, most other had normal black shadows.
Anyone tried to get the info parchment popup of a Emissary with right mouse button? Attention, may be just me, but better save the campaign before.
Antalis, the colored shadows are in DJs bifs, we can change that easily, but not very annoyng to me.
What is bizarre is some textures that come with the dead bodys, before they vanished in the stars, lol.

Do you already have reorganized portraits for the emissaries for different factions?
I´m not certain, but I don´t believe that its possible to add a catholic portrait that easy to an orthodoc, islamic or whatever.
edit: Hmm, very strange. In v 1.0 the emissarys worked, now not.
What have been changed on the way for portaits?

Why are they don´t working now, when they have worked before?

Ok I have the SOLUTION for the emissary portrait problem of the emissary portrait pack:
Delete the "Emissary60"tga in campmap\Portraits\Hellenic\catholic\Emissary. And don´t use this Emissary60 from the Emissary-pack at all

I've installed again whole MTW and VI, and I have copied all the files sitting by the beta 2.1... It works until I have to take a faction, where it goes down saying it doesn't have a portrait.
What do I do? The guide of Antalis doesn't exist
Something like a permanent readme and guide, and the missing parts of the game included in the beta download would be VERY appreciated.
Otherwise, the mod looks great Im actually very eager to play it.

Hi,
Sorry to all here ... but I am up to my neck at work ... the passed week I only managed to put 4 - 6 hours of work in the mod and most of that was devoted on the ships. And trying to sort out the problems you have uncovered.
Please take it easy ... I will have some time in my hands hopefully this weekend but most probably by 23/12 ... I know you are all eager to play with v.2.0 but this is as fast as I can go at this time.
Thanks
CID007, I have read your posts ... some time ago and took notes to all you said as with every one else’s ... I am doing my best (it is 8:00pm and I am still at work here).
flip, I have noticed that thing too. The problem came from the fact that there was the javelin paced on the right hand of that frame. I have changed that but ... it has not changed ???? DJ ... some help here ... the image is a flag of some faction.

DJ to the rescue http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif
That piece of flag you're seeing when the soldier dies is actually a faction shield. When you replace certain BIFs you will notice these bits of faction shields. There are some units, such as Feudal Sergeants, that have shields depending on the faction. When you overwrite that particular BIF you will almost see that bit of faction shield appearing. It doesn't matter what you do, if when the unit doesn't use a shield it will still appear. Thank god for CA making a modfriendly game
I always try to avoid it by writing not over those BIFs, but I think the solutions lies in overwriting the factionshields: Battle\FacShields. You should replace every image with an entire green one (in MTW this means entirely invisible, I haven't tried it yet, but to be safe, keep the same format and palette. Once done replacing, MTW no longer has faction shields to display since they are all invisible and you are no longer troubled with them.

Hi all,
I will compile a small patch with all the fixes in it so we can all get moving. I will also include my full directory of building images so the "Orthodox" problem will be solved. If not ... a new building definition might be needed there to separate the Democrats, Oligarchic / Monarchic and Eastern Monarchic Factions. I will see what happens on this front.
Duke John, yes that's it and I have all the needed files for it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif since my Persian Wars mod ... I will move them here though ... I though about trying to give its Faction there own Hoplite shield. The thing is that it appears at the last frame of the guy dieing http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif any way. I have the files I will test them.
Sir Moody, I have not checked my mail yet but can you sent it over so I can put it in patch. I will try to see if I can have the dead bodies of hoplites and peltasts in the TGA.
If I can manage Ships will also be included by Sunday with all there goodies.
There will also be a small twist of realism. Hoplites will not charge at top speed. Actually Hoplite units will have a charging speed ~2/3 of running while Spartans will only have ~1/2. Exception to this will have the Athenians (they were the first to charge at top speed) and I might also have the Late Period Hoplites (Classical).
BTW ... DJ will you continue your work on the Ancient units i.e. Bronze Plated armour Hoplites, Persian units, ...?

The Year is 672 BC the place is Attika just outside of Athens
The Corintheans having conquered half the known world with brutal use of the famed Hoplites face the Atheneans in a brutal show down.
3 Years before the Atheneans and Corintheans faced each other down over a province in the North - the Corintheans refusing to budge destroyed the Athenean army before moving onto massacre the Barbarian horde.
In a Revenge attack the Atheneans hit the port province of Macadonia - in a brutal defence the Corintheans fell to the last man killing as many as they lost.
The Corintheans enranged by the boldness of their enemy struck at the heart of the Athenean empire - Athens herself. Within a year Athens was aflame.
The Athenean Army - a majority Cavalry force - in anger left the soil of Macadonia and returned to revenge Athens.
Out numbered 7 to 1 the Corintheans refused to give ground and prepared to fight. Before the battle the general made a bold claim - for every Corinthean soldier who dies this day 5 Atheneans will join him.
Knowing their strengths the Corinthean Hoplites take the high ground and leave a small force of Polimites hidden in a forest in the flank. The Atheneans storm towards them with as much cavalry as they can muster.
In Traditional Cavalry style the Atheneans try t oflank the Hoplites but are massacred by the polimites who charge out of the forest into their rear. Relising his mistake too late the Athenean general leading the Infantry wing of the amry reaches the bottom of the Corinthean hill - before he can adjust the hoplites plow into him. While the bloody meat grinder continues at the foot of the hill small divisons of hoplites and Polimies push the cavalry back, eventually it collapses and flees. Reserve cavalry seeing this is pushed onto the field and rushes to support the infantry - but arrives too late - the divisons of hoplites and polimites smash into the infantry's flank - the Athenean general escapes and flees - most of his men are not so lucky.
The Corintheans reform and in a line sowly push the Athenean reserves back towards ther waiting reinforcements inflicting horeendous casulties among the Cavalry. More and more reserves push into the Corintean line and eventually they manage to split the line. - Surrounded and enbattled the divided force get down to holding what ground they have - killing any who smash into the lines - for 6 hours the last stand continues with the hoplites refusing to give ground and holding what they have. Slowly the cavalry wears the Corinthean Hoplites down and runs down all but 2 divisions. The last 2 Divisions stand back to back and continue fighting until the Sun is nearly behind the hills when the last of them is killed.
Athens is reclaimed but at a heavy cost - the Corinthean boast was well deserved - the final count is 1400 Corintheans dead - 5200 Atheneans went to join them...
This was probably the most bloody battle ever with the fixed dead page the path my hoplites took was completely paved with dead horses...

Hi sir Moody,
Well done on both counts http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif
The problem though is here ... Greeks were very reluctant to use a horse in battle. Though horses were widely used the hoplites would dismount them and fight on foot ... I have to find a way to stop this http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif
Any way here we go with the
Development update
Ships are done http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif at last.
This is the list and there descriptions.
Penticonter
{"The Penticonter is an inspired design of a warship. It’s slim and long haul makes it very fast but this is not the only case. The fact that the entire ship is built around a battering ram the 'emvolon' that can be used to break a part enemy ship by ramming them is the singe most important thing about it. Its open deck leaves the men unprotected to archer fire."}
Biere
{"The Biere was the next step of development to the excellent Penticonter. A second line of oars on a second deck and a close deck design made it even faster, more manoeuvrable and more powerful. The 100 oars are very closely packed so a very good crew is needed to make this ship the weapon it is."}
Early Triere
{"The Triere was the final step of the Penticonter design. With a total of 170 oars three decks and a heavy 'emvolon' in front made it a particularly dangerous ship to face. The biggest problem faced was the proximity of the oars, the crew had to be expert and willing so if slave were needed to man them the were given there freedom. The open deck design makes the crew vulnerable to archer fire"}
Triere
{"The solution to the vulnerability of the crew was given by the addition of an upper deck. Now a small contingent of marines could be carried with relative safety. To increase the protection to archer fire hard leather curtains were also placed at the sides of the oarsmen. The ship did not gain much weight but increases its potential in battle infinitely."}
Late Triere
{"This Kataphract Triere was the result of constant fighting among the Greeks and the Eastern Empires that packed large number of archers on their ships. The crew now is well protected while many refinements give the marines a better chance in boarding situations."}
========================
Phoenician warship
{"The Phoenician warship is a capable military ship found throughout the Eastern Mediterranean sea. It is a somewhat fast and manoeuvrable ship that carries a small contingent of men but has ramming capabilities. Its strength lies with its archers and able men."}
Phoenician Triere
{"The Phoenician Triere is as good as any other Triere and its capable seamen make it an outstanding opponent. Its oarsmen are well protected in the hull while it offers a good platform from marines to board enemy ships. A tower offers elevation to the archers so they can fire on the enemies at all times. Its drawback is its weight."}
Fast Phoenician Triere
{"This is a new design of ship that is spotted. It is very fast and manoeuvrable ship that can direct its Ram on anything at sea. Many fear it but its light construction makes it vulnerable if caught in close quarters. Team tactics should be considered when facing this capable foe."}
Egyptian warship
{"The Egyptian warship is a capable military ship found throughout the Eastern Mediterranean sea. It is neither fast nor manoeuvrable ship that carries an adequate contingent of men to allow operation. Its strength lies with its archers and able men. Usually it will fire volleys of arrows and then try to board the enemy ship."}
Large Egyptian Warships
{"The Large Egyptian Warships are upgrades to the basic design. They carry a large contingent of men and are capable of landing operations. Their archers can devastate enemy ships from distance and then their warriors will board the enemy ships to victory."}
==================================
Barbarian warship
{"These warships are a good reason to keep the Merchant ships under escort. Though small and fairly unprotected they are fast and manoeuvrable to get in to a good position or board the enemy vessel. They are not to be trusted for large operations or sea power struggle."}
Large Barbarian warship
{"These larger warships were built to give a better chance of survival in a sea filled with very capable war ships. There larger number of oars and better protection offer the men a better chance to successfully board enemy ships. It would still be wise to avoid confrontations with the better ships the Greeks and Phoenicians posses."}
===================
Merchant Ship
{"These ships have been travelling the Mediterranean for ages carrying anything to any where. Slow and ponderous they are fine targets for anyone with a small warrior band aboard. So tacking well care of them is very important to maintain the sea trade lines. On the other hand they a cheap and easy to built."}
=============================
Merchant ships are available to all,
Phoenician warship, Egyptian warship, Large Egyptian warship, are available to all Eastern Empires.
Phoenician Triere and Fast Phoenician Triere are only for Persians.
========================================================
On other news I have recalibrated the Slingers now there are:
Heavy Missile Slingers
Light Missile Slingers and
Rhodian Slingers.
Heavy Missile Slingers and Light Missile Slingers differ in just the type of missile. Heavy have short range but are lethal even for the heavy armoured hoplites while the other have greater range.
Rhodian Slingers have reduced range than before but are still very lethal to unarmed troops.

kom - im looking into a way of fixing the over production of cavalry at the moment - the Nap mod had simmiliar probs and they were able t ofix them with no change in price or support so ill talk to a few of the Lords
EDIT
ok by looking at the 1.03 to 1.07 nap changes the only one i can see is a reduction in cavalry size - ive made the changes and im currently testing along with a few other changes ill list bellow
1) ive given the Spartens a small Navy so they can compete with the other Greek States in Geometric times
2) ive changed all references to Royal_palace in the start pos to Royal_court where the Faction or region is Othrodox
3) ive given mechants a rising attactablity to Mercanaries - reasonong the richer a province is the more Mercs will come
4) ive dosed the Lydian lands up in value a bit - they now start making a small profit not in debt
thats all for now ill rpeort back with any results

Hi,
Antalis,
That is exactly how they should look like ... the only problem ... there very few big rivers in the Balkans and at that time I am not sure about the bridges.
Sir Moody,
I think I can handle cavalry from the AI character values ... we will se in this next update.
1) ive given the Spartens a small Navy so they can compete with the other Greek States in Geometric times
OK I will pass it on ... Spartans were great in land fights but used other city states for there navy.
2) ive changed all references to Royal_palace in the start pos to Royal_court where the Faction or region is Othrodox
.... hmmm I though I had done that ... strange ...
3) ive given mechants a rising attactablity to Mercanaries - reasonong the richer a province is the more Mercs will come
Reasonable ... I also attached that to the castle size.
4) ive dosed the Lydian lands up in value a bit - they now start making a small profit not in debt
Well they might just need that. Most of the income the Greeks have comes from the trade. The new ships will nullify that. The merchant will not have much support cost (I will reduce it from what I have it till now) but the rest will cost a fortune to have them away from there home base.
Komninos,
check the Classic age Macedonian campaign. The kings names in the parchments have a lot of errors. ... numerals**_1
The thing with Temple, Church info pic woorked as you said.
When do you'll whant my graphics pack ?
Did you checked the Lydians color code? and the Corynthian default shield in custom battles?
>>On other news I have recalibrated the Slingers now there are:
Heavy Missile Slingers
Light Missile Slingers and
Rhodian Slingers.
Does this mean that we have to had more units in the 56 units available in HTW 2.0? If so I have to change that in my graphics pack.
see you

thank you komninos. I hope that the problem with the terrains will be solved.
I´ve sent you a campaignmap with my suggestions (and I think they are good http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif ).
About river battles: I´m quite sure there were such battles, I believe Granikos was such a battle.
Problem in MTW is that you cannot pass a river without a bridge, so bridges are a must.
I have made 10 rivermaps and I want to use them in the mod.
btw:
I´ve renamed the castlemaps and make mapimages for them.
I have also renamed most landscapes.
I have also defined the three new maps that I´ve made for the castle-pack, without the buildings, as 3 new landscapes, so there would be 79 at the moment.

Hi,
Flip,
No the slingers just got new names and projectile stats.
I have seen the numerals think I have to find a way to fix it.
All colour codes have been revised and yes the Lydians no use a light grey.
For Corinthians I don't know ... have you made all the needed shields for them (even the colour code shields? most probably there is the error)
As for your pack ... I will mail you some time today or tomorrow ... have to get authorisation first.
Antalis,
I send you a BIG email replay (to all 5 of them) ... with all the answers to your questions and suggestions.
The point for the rivers is:
I MTW does not use the rivers as the Ancients did ... can we simulate the shallow crossings by placing two or tree bridges the one beside the other?

I have tried this: Its not possible, sorry, the AI uses only one bridge to cross the river there.
I´ve tried really everything without really good results, so we have to live with bridges.
The river-system in MTW is very restricted, but anyways, it would be a pitty to have no river-map and I´m glad that you´ll define some http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

well by dropping the cavalry size to 50 the AI builds 1 cav to every 1 infantry - still too much but...
on another note i noticed the Weapon and Armour Upgrades stop at 3 - master weapon/Armourer doesnt add one bug or intentional?
im still looking into reducing cavalry ill see what else i can do to reduce the amount built
Komninos, I was right about Persian Royal Guard horses.
Look them close by. They dont match with that knight with levitation skils.
So, opened Hellenic unit prod in Gnome to check what was wrong. Changed the horse type for EHorse and bingo.
Never liked indeed of that Joust Medieval horses.
In DeadPage coordinates in bottom of the list I gave them the valours of the LydianRoyalGuard who also use EHorse.
Sir Moody
12-21-2003, 03:03
well ive come up wit hthe soloution and im testing it right now
by playing with coloum 15 in unit_prod ive been able to increase the likely hood of infantry been produced and so far it seems to be working better - if they can they seem to pump out Hoplites and light inf (Pel's or Ak's depending on age) Cavavlry still is produced but as an after thought - 1 in 4 or more greek side
on the barbarian sides ive been able to tweak it up to 1 in 3 (or 2 not too sure yet)
relising i could use this to remove another pet downer the amount of ships produced is far better - u no longer will see fleets of 15 ships per faction at every see region - now 5 seems to be where they stay
all together very good - im gonna test it a bit more see if i cant tweek cavalry size up a bit without killing the changes

Quote[/b] ]well ive come up wit hthe soloution and im testing it right now
by playing with coloum 15 in unit_prod ive been able to increase the likely hood of infantry been produced and so far it seems to be working better - if they can they seem to pump out Hoplites and light inf (Pel's or Ak's depending on age) Cavavlry still is produced but as an after thought - 1 in 4 or more greek side
on the barbarian sides ive been able to tweak it up to 1 in 3 (or 2 not too sure yet)
That in nice ... what have you changed ... do you still need a reduced horse unit size ... they become very ineffective if reduced. For the Greeks it should be 4 Heavy Inf, 2 Light inf, 1 horse (at the most). Macedonians and Thessalians should get a bit more.
Lydians should be at 2 Heavy Inf, 4 Archer, 2 horse.
Northern Barbarians and Phrygians 2 Heavy Inf, 6 Light inf, 1 horse the difference is that Phrygians must have more archers.
Quote[/b] ]relising i could use this to remove another pet downer the amount of ships produced is far better - u no longer will see fleets of 15 ships per faction at every see region - now 5 seems to be where they stay
Just hold on a bit for the ships ... there is a new list for them and they cost a lot more than what they used to both to by them and to support them.
======================================================
The good news here is that the final beta (hopefully) for V.2.1 will be out soon. In it there will be flips environmental changes, Antalis maps, new Ships, re calibration of units, better starting conditions for (Classical, Proclassical). And some more.
On the slingers ... unfortunately the grenade I planed to use can't attack wooden walls (?????) so I turned them to flaming arrow http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/frown.gif ... this is not good for slingers but I will try to find an other solution

Ok, with Komninos red light we make available for testing the complement graphics pack for HTW 2.1 beta. This involved historical and web research and hours of labour.
I changed some things from Komninos work and used DBAs
Pictures Armys (http://www.dbaol.com/) and for review panel units a comp. card game(http://digilander.libero.it/zak965/hoplites.htm).
Other images are from ("Warfare in the Classical World" by John Warry). Portraits and stone reliefs from (http://www.phil.uni-erlangen.de/~p1altar/aeriahome.html).
Install/Unzip inside "Medieval - Total War" directory. BackUp before Monofont folder(experiments on tweeked mtw fonts with classical style)- Also the work for Portraits its not complete, follow instructions from Antalis in the posts, but no problems here, you may overwrite. Maps are in Jpgs, need convertion to TGAs.
All the rest will overwrite files with equal names.
We'll apreciate feedback, in Letring and fonts displacement problems, aspects of graphics, sugestions, etc. Review panel buildings icons will be changed in next patchs, its a huge work. Here we have just the 10 casttles available for the mod. Agents pieces have the principal characters. In futur all events and info parchments will be new.

Wow Wonderfull mod Komminos, 2.1 is a big improvement from 1.0 IMO, Even though it's a Beta, Im sure 2.0 Final will be even better.
Cheers to Both Flip and Antalis for both making this Beta Version better with the Graphic and Potrait Packs.

Hi all,
I am now at the final stages of one more "final" beta. I am still ironing out some things ... like the numerals but am moving ...
======================================
ParthianWarrior,
Yes the Immortals were good ... they were excellent actually and trained from childhood and if you check there stats you will see this. BUT they went to battle as all Persian army. They did not use armour and there shields were light and good for stopping arrows.
When facing the heavy hoplitic phalanx they were in a big disadvantage and only there speed and training could save them.
I have made one of the starting formation the Sparabra. There are three units of archers in font, three Kardakes, and then in deep rows archers again with tow more foot. Archer fire is great bat you have to face the Greeks in overwhelming numbers always. Out flank them and charge them with your cavalry from the rear. That is the only way.

ParthianWarrior,
Be very careful with Lydian Cavalry units ... They are the only nation in antiquity to use cavalry as an assault unit. There tactics are similar to the ones used by the knights in the middle ages. Persians and Lydians became nearly as close as the Greeks and Romans after the capitulation of the Lydian empire and Lydian cavalry was the Persian main cavalry force. Lydian infantry is very close to the hoplitic phalanx and they should give you some trouble.
So if you face the Lydian cavalry units make sure to hit them with your archers and have some camels as a side dish. When your cavalry units engage them hit them also with the camels to the advantage. This is how actually happened and the Lydians lost. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
Antalis,
Though the Immortals were used they were usually at the rear. Don't forget that these were the close relatives of the King ... you don't send them to meat grinder that easily, and you might have to face the heat later on ... it is your own or brothers sun after all. They were used only when victory was assured. ( to claim it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ). Use a lot of the non Persian troops Phrygians, Lydian, Abyssinian, Skythian ... etc and always make them have reserves. This was the problem of the Greeks they had to fight with all the forces committed all the time and there heavy armour made it very difficult. Expect casualty rates of 3 to 1 or more.

I followed the instruction to the letter, and i installed the HTW_mod_install, but i left the visual upgrade from flip out this time.
I can do everything from selecting an age to selection a faction and go on the campaign map. I can build buildings and units. But when i attack another province and personally command the load screen comes up. Now it goes up to about 10% and i get dropped to the windows desktop.
I tried runnning the clean copy MTW i have saved and which i use to copy this mod on and that runs fine..no hick ups.
I tried setting diff. resolutions and looked at all drivers.

This is for those of you that have some modding experience and time for debugging ... The HTW V.2.1 Beta is here.
Things we are looking for are files missing, descriptions unit behaviour, game balance ... new ideas ... etc

If you stumble on some then check for something missing send me a PM so I can look for it too. Beta 2.1 (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/HTW-V2-beta.zip)
flips Graphic pack (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/flip_HTW_2_1_beta.zip)
How to install:
Change the name of the "Vikings"-folder from your "campmap/Portraits"-folder, to "Hellenic".
Then: Unzipp every zip (of the two links ubove) into your MTW main directory (you need a new install of MTW, or a version without a mod) (you need also Viking Invasion).
Then go into your Textures/campmap/Hellenic-folder and convert the "MapTex.jpg" and the "MapTex2.jpg" there (that are the campmap images) with "Irfan View" (you can find it easaly with google) into "tga" format and put it in the same directory.
Then: Ready to play

NSG i mentioned the fix for this - the problem is the Orthodox (representing monarchies) dont use Royal palaces they use Royal Courts and the Startpos fogot this (poor kom was quite rushed id imagine and fogot to change them) go into start pos for the time period you are playing - look at which regions are orthodox and then change the palaces to courts (eg. ROYAL_PALACE2 becomes ROYAL_COURT2) this will stop that error

Ok, besides some minor bugs the mod looks good and i enjoy it but xxxxxxx hell i need massive armies to keep my own provinces i started with under controlle.
here is a pic of the armies i have to hold in my provinces as garrisons JUST to keep it on 100% at normal tax even some at LOW.
Is this on purpose so hard? Do i need to make huge armies. I Wanna attack others and i cant because i need them all to controlle my kingdom.
I play this on hard cause extreme after 1 round i had a revolt and the next round and the next and my popularity was at 0%
Now i know these are not great armies but there huge for garrisons, which should be 200 man big and should prefent revolts when taxes are on highest

Hi all,
We are close to the final beta.
I have to find the thing with the numerals ... It mast be something from the Heroes file I think cause then is when it started but I might be wrong.
Flip I found the bug with the Corinthians in the Colors folder the file was Corinthians.bif instead of Corinthian.bif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/pissed.gif I also made a series of shields for the colours.
Antalis, can you send the castle maps over so I can zip them up
~49MB rar file is what to expect. There are portraits for all butI have reduced Muslim, Pagan and Northtribs to 20 images / folder to avoid a 100MB file.
Further changes include a Pavice shield for Sparabara and a since shield for Immortals
Sir Moody I have finally managed to find the bug in my behavioural calculation and they look good now but further testing is needed. I found a lot of horses in under developed areas cause they could not produce anything else. I might put the need of a blacksmith and a horse farm for javelin cavalry (Hippies Acondiste).
NSG, Yes this is intentional. Greeks did not like musters thus the constant fighting. On top of general high restlessness factors in provinces (especially in the Greek world) the production buildings increase the tendency for rebellion so you have to build things like Gymnasiums, theatres, Palaces, Parliaments depending on the peoples beliefs (Democrats, Oligarchic...). So build some of the "useless" buildings.
The reason for the revolts you are getting has something to do with the heroes file too. You need to get some of them at the start of the game now you have none. I will try to fix that too.

What do you mean exactly?: That you have found a way to define for one specific province one specific map?
Something like that yes, but there are some serious limitations so please don't get too excited. I'll try to explain. You probably already know most of what I'm about to say, but I'll make it detailed to make sure nothing gets lost.
The idea is based on exploiting differences from the original MTW strategy map and your new strategy map.
When a battle is to be faught and a battlemap selected, the game uses three "region description attributes"("RA" from now on).
For border battles, these RA are given in the startpos.txt file under the header:
//========================================
//Border Info
//Attributes of borders between provinces
//and the maps available to each border
//========================================
For battles within a region:
//========================================
//Region Attributes
//The special characteristics for a region
//========================================
The RAs are:
1) COAST/INLAND
2) Landscape: PLAINS/FLAT/HILLY/MOUNTAIN
Borders has some additional.
Ex:FLT2HLL; Flat to Hilly.
3) NO-RIVER/RIVER
Based on a combination of these RAs, the game selects a battlemap that have names like for example:
flatinland01
flatinlandriver03
flattohillsinland02
flattohillsinlandriver03
hillycoastal08
etc.
By looking at their names the connection between the RA and the battlemaps become evident.
When two or more regions/borders use the same combination of RA, they randomly select among the same group of battlemaps with a given name.
And here comes the key:
As you are using a new strategy map you are maybe using a given combination of RA only once, or not at all.
1)If you are using a RA only once, let's say: INLAND, FLT2HLL, RIVER, you can save your historical battlemap into all maps with the name: flattohillsinlandriver0*.
Or maybe even better, you can save your historical battlemap as one of them, so that you only sometimes fight on historical ground. After all you are changing history in this game
2) If a given RA combination is not used at all, you can give this RA to a region/border you want a historical battlefield for, and name the battlemap accordingly. The "only" problem with this is that the description of the landscape won't be correct when playing, but there may be some solutions for this as well.
When I glanced threw the HTW startpos.txt file I particularly noticed that you have no rivers. This means that every RA combination including RIVER is free to use
The description "River" you get when playing(strat.map) can probably be changed to something like "Historical battlefield" in some Loc.txt file.
As you probably understand, this is not a perfect solution, but it's the best I can come up with.

Hi all,
I know the problem with the Rebelions are big BUT I hvae not tasted it yet ... my garisons are 5 - 6 units in the new provinces but I always build border forts and other buildings that will reduce the effect.
I will see at the moment you can reduce these numbers at the startpos file.
SetAttributes:: ID_LANDREG_02 "Corcyra" 2 CATHOLIC_CULTURE ARID AT_SOUTHERN_EUROPEAN -1 161 "Akropoli_of_Cassiope" COAST HILLY NO_RIVER TRUE

Another way to keep revolts down is to have your spys kill off the low loyalty generals lower your tax when you go raiding build temples or if your sick as you say alter the hellenic build prod2 file and increase the happiness value when you build a tavern for example.
But don't forget this is a beta and changing files or values won't help the people who wrote it your testing the Beta for them any short comings will be change in the final version of the mod

Okay, i tried out the mod.
VERY fun but a few things...
WAAAYYY too many ships. I find it impossible to attack an enemy fleet because its surrounded by other fleets from every faction, in every ocean. Playing as sparta, this is very frustrating as they tend to invade my spartan-training provences.
The rebel thing is very frustrating too. Maintaining large garrisons and building is very hard to do, and i find it impossible to invade another faction without having 3000 man rebellions every province i move. I have to hire a lot of troops to keep the loyalty up and it costs too much money and time and it just looks pretty chaotic in general. I know it was historically correct and whatnot, but I think it goes a little overboard in terms of gameplay. I know building the buildings helps, but building buildings takes many years... and until then i have to garrison the province until they're finished, and then i get invaded the minute i move out and all the buildings i built are destroyed and looted. Gah.
When i assault forts, i look on the map and the 'fort' is a giant 3 walled citadel Is this intended as of now? And some maps are just random plains, but thats probably because the maps arent finished yet.
Otherwise, VERY fun. I fought a last-stand defence against 2 allied factions in one battle, them numbering 7,000+ and me with about 1500. Very fun, and its cool how theres a huge concentration of corpses where the main hoplite battle took place. And chasing skirmishers is always a pain.
Antalis, assalting forts gives a default flat map. Why?

Yes that´s possible.
I havn´t tried it yet, but it seems not very difficult.
I have historical battles for a persian campaign (3 maps: Marathon, Thermopylae, Plataeae) and maps for a Macedon rise campaign (Chaironeia, Issus, Gaugamela, Granikos) (but I would need this sarissa units and cavalry. So I don´t know if I´ll release this Macedon Historical-Campaign with this version).
A small problem is, that with 300 Spartans the possibilty to die at Thermophyle (like it was in real history) is high and then to have success to come to the next map?
Maybe I give them more, lets see.
What do you think: Should I try to add historical campaigns or should I let them seperate as historical battles?
Or should I make both?
btw: Today I have made a map (not the hist battle yet) of Sphakteria (Peloponesian war).
Hello everyone,
I just wanted to post and say that I LOVE this mod. And many thanks to the people making this mod possible.
I just wanted to mention some tips for helping people with this province happyness problem. Many of the things you can build (improved farmland, mines ,and traders), lower your happyness rating. These buildings make you people work harder, and thus they are very unhappy (improved farmland 4 has a -80 happyness rating). So, dont always worry about building the things that give you a higher income, they will make your poeple the most unhappy. In my opinion, building a couple levels of traders is the best route, you can make a ton of money from trade.
Another thing that can help your happyness rating is using mercenaries. I usually hire a TON of them and use them to garrison my provinces. Most of them have a fairly low support cost. Some times if you have enough of them and you are able to raise your tax level from "high" to "very high", they will more than pay for themselves. By using them to raise your tax level, you can profit from hiring them.
Good luck everyone, I hope that helps some.

ok, I´ll try to add the Persian wars historical battles to a campaign and will release the Macedonian battles with a later update.
Currently I´m working on some Peloponesian war battles.
I was very buisy today and made 4 battlefieldmaps for it: Spharkteria, Amphipolis, Delion and Mantinea.
I will add these battlefieldmaps also to the normal maps, so the mod has than 84 landscapes.
Good Antalis,
can you chain historical battles? The maps are ready so, I looked to the guides available but I'm green yet on this. Lets try to chain some campaigns to test. You may begin with Marathon, Thermopylae and Platea. I could pass you resources for that. If it works we may go to Peloponesean war. For Macedonians I think we'll need to wait for a upgrade from Komninos. He as plans for that.
For Thermopylae I have a clue. They were surrounded by a force of 10000 Imortlas, just because the Phocians leaved is position on mountains to prevent outflanking. And if the Phocians prevailed there...? Maybe two parts for Thermopylae.
Other thing, what about siege machines? This was a must in greek wars. We have Siracusae as an example.
NagatsukaShumi
12-28-2003, 00:56
If the system still shares similarities with Shogun you could have Thermopylae part 1 been the fight with the Phocians involved, and then you could have two other possiblities linking from whether you win or not, if you win you could have extra troops in the battle against the immortals, if you lose you are without the Phocians as an extra troop, just an idea.

The
BETA - 2 of HTW V.2.1 (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/HTW-Beta-2-V-2-1.rar) is out ... at last
Thanks to all that helped ... Sir Moody ... I think I forgot to mansion you for the Deadpage coord so thank you too (I will add it now for the final sorry) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif
The effect of the buildings has been reduced for the revolts. Ships are in it and looking good. All os flips Stuff, ...
One more thing this should play OK ... extract the files in the MTW main folder And Transform the JPG map files to TGAs with ACDSee or Irfanview
Thanks ... I will go get some sleep now.
=================
Thermopile is a bit problematic one ... you have to loose the battle AND your King (To full fill the prophesy from Delphi ..."Sparta has to loose a King or it will fall"). You can't move forward in a Historical campaign if you loose ... I think ...
NagatsukaShumi

Here is the line from the Historical Camp files.
//results
Result::1, alliances 5, style DEFEAT
Result::2, alliances 5, style VICTORY, end COMPLETED_UNLOCKED
You can link a defeat to another battle, it was possible in Shogun to do this and by this brief look at the files it is also possible in MTW.

flip:
I´m grateful for every resource you have or can find.
The most important things are strategic maps with units listed (specialy for the Peloponesian war).
Also if I would make a Anabasis Campaign: Could you list (maybe I read the book again, lets see) of the battles there and where they were? I know only of Kunaxa (I guess), maybe with lists of factions (tribes maybe), leadernames and unit-lists?
But I believe that there were more small guerilla attacks from triebs in mountains then large battles.
About Thermopylae: I don´t beliefe that I can make it that if I loose then I can go to the next map, this is hardcoded I guess.
Don´t know a solution, without writing the history absolutly new.
About siege-weapons: At the moment there are none, did the greeks have such weapons?
If yes, I would also agree to implementate such weapons.
Also some battles were won by Athen and some by Sparta in the Peloponesian war.
So give them the exact same troops like it was in history?
It would be strange to play some time Sparta and the other time Athen.
Antalis::

One thing: We have forgotten to write in the readme that you have to copy all images from the "Arid" (in Battles/MapImage) -folder (from the download. That means after you have installed the mod) and put them also in, at least, the "Temperate" folder.
If you don´t do this then you get the false castlemap-image with "temperate" terrain provinces.
(The same thing will be than with the landscapes later).
I havn´t made a temperate-folder because of the size, but I will make it next time for the landscapes.
About the ship icons: Could you make new ones?
The MTW ship icons don´t fitting to HTW.
Look at the links for images, I posted few sites back at the thread.

zimoa, The descriptions are in there ... I think there is a problem with Persian horse archers most probably I reached the maximum os units ... I will have to delete the MTW descriptions probably.

It was a fight to the bloody end and the end was victory
Hundrets (no, nearly thousends) of persians attacked my 300 Spartans and most were killed.
The few that had survieved of my fearful Spartan Holites were so tired that it was very difficult to fight.
The unit of King Leonidas had high cassualties (only 6 with the king survieved).
Behind my lines new persian armies arrived and prepared to attack.
Before that happened I killed the persian king and marched on the hill behind the narrow and hold it
The coward persians that had survived ran away after a short fight on the hill

i spoke too soon - lydian archers still crash the game as do armed slaves (was able to narrow it down)
a few other points
1) Slave Fanatics Have too many people in them - when an uprise occurs the game freaks and only assigns them in groups of ten - this will only happen in upriseings
2) In uprisings 70% + of the enemy will be slingers....
3) Northan tribes produce all cav
4) Due to high cost ships and men Greek states are in debt from the word go and cannot really get out of it - makes the AI loopy (crazy, mad, unbalanced in the head etc)

I have added one historical campaign together: Persianwars.
Only the description is missing till now.
This campaign is very difficult, but I´ve tested it and it´s possible to win.
3 maps are in it: Marathon 490 B.C.
Thermopylae 480 B.C.
Plataeae 479 B.C.
Its a pitty that I can´t make seabattles: Salamis... .
btw: Has anyone good links to tactical maps of historic battles with unit-lists (specially for the Peloponesian war)?
One question: Should I release this campaign (and all hist. campaigns that I would make) also as historical battles (so that you don´t have to play this campaign to the end to play the last or next map, if you want to)?

youone,
Making units is MTW moding 101 ... I also started from there. I have DJs Greek cavalry units And I will use them ... just not now. I have to make some more changes to insert them.
On the other hand is that cavalry in the Greek world was used mostly as a rapid hoplite despoilment unit. That is why it is pictured with shields. Cavalry at these times did not use any. But it is something I will take care of.
=============================
Sir Moody, can you check the files if they all go to their place ... I am lost with those CTDs. The main body of the mod remained unchanged and I added flips zip on top of it with some extra files ... I can't see the problem ...

ok Kom on Spartan Train times - imagine it like this - the country starts to train a unit - at the same time they are gonna be training other units they dont train em one after the other so the training time of 4 is a little odd personally i think 2 is better for all hoplites

OK here is something I worked today... a small new map (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/newmap.png) that I know you will like. Its compilation went OK and one of these days I am going to pack it for MTW:VI and see what happens. This little map can work for many periods and many mods http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

kom it does work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ill explain what the problem was and this wil ltake some time
ok the problem was due to your setting of names - eg the spartan king was named the name that was in position 84
this isnt a problem in itself it takes the name and bingo there it is - the problem arised when it looked at the startpos file - you set the number of royal names to 1 - again this isnt a problem as its old data BUT heres the problem the name that u set is the first on the list - not the 84th so it goes GAH and tags a silly roman numerical error on the end so to get it right u have to do 83 0's followed by a 1 - this is the ideal soloution but as isaid i was making a quick fix not an ideal soloution so on time constraints i just did 110 1's thus all names are set right and what ever name it is will be right
Kom
Thanks I went back onto DJ site And found his cav units I also fellowed your link to DBA online, again thanks,
when going through the army lists I liked the light chariots
looking back over NTW they use a horse pulling a canon, is there any way you can change the canon graphic to a chariot,this would look ok for a light chariot or am I running before I can walk
Flip
Thanks the startpos patch worked great no more pressing the space key http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif keep it comeing

ok Ive given Flip the full Startpos fix now - no longer will roman numeral names cause problems and unlike my quick fix the princes with new names who become kings will be Name I not Name II
and yes Kom i can play with the hero file if you want but it was the Start pos's in error not the hero file in this case (lemmie know what u want doing to the hero file and i can do it)

I´ve defined a few rivermaps and renamed them and it works with no problems http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif .
I also added 2 historical battlefieldmaps: If you attack Phocis from Aeniania then you get the Thermopylae map.
In this area is the real Thermopylae.
You get Marathon if you attack Attika from Boethia.
I´ve also added two new landscapes.
