I spent last 6 hours with HTW.
Outstanding work Very addictive mod - it has atmosphere of ancient times, with this fonts, units, buidings...
And it helps to imagine special conditions of greek war long BC.
Impressive and complexed more then I supposed.
There are details, that were annoying, but not too much imho (and I'm sure some of this detail could take months of work...)

Ok, I'll start a improvised pool. Which one of you found the horses small in comparison to the ryder? I have already some units made but some remain, I may try to change that if people ask. For game purposes it don't make much difference, but I'd like to hear about it. Also Komninos, would like your opinion. Chek the latest screens with horses pls.

I know that historical vice that the Romans had small horses, more looking like ponys, i have a great pic with a roman soldier standing besides his horse. so you have a comparison.
But finaly i don't know about the breed they used in the periods this game covers.

I'm collecting some information on this subject to share with the org fans. The system that me and Komninos, by suggestion from Sir Moody, introduced for the mounted units, will permit to change type of horses because they, mount and rider, share the same bif.
I was looking for the MTW horses and I think, almost what is used its the same LiHorse, is a big one, medieval romantic style. A north european horse, well I'm not expert. Maybe because since I enter in HTW I was contaminated as result by the documents and sources.
So I build a horse not biger as the one in MTW, influenced by the pics and sources. Some tribes and people used ponys, and small horses. I'll check more on this.

I have seen these horses in a big zoo here in Athens, the plate read “Skirian Horse” and a good guess is due to the origin of those horses to the island of Skiros. They also clamed that this was most probably the main horses used by the Greek armies and in the armies of Alexander. Those horses were not ponies but not Arabian either. I am not a horse expert but they looked like medium size about 1,8m to 2,0m tall but sturdy horses more of an all terrain, all workload breed that a pure race horse. These differ a lot form the horses of the Midle ages when cross birds were produced by mixing the Arabian horses with this or the northern horses. Actually the many early pictures depict the Germanic knights on ponies.
For HTW I think the size of the horses used is OK for all nations except the Persians that should have Arabian type horses (tall and slim). I am thinking also for Skythan horse archer unit that will also need a different horse (Steppe Horse).

I would like to share my impression about the battle I fought in HTW (latest version). Sorry for long post :)
I played HTW for the first time on the highest level of difficulty (I suppose it's an expert). I took Persians to try conquer all Greece as soon as possible (it was classical age).
First year of playing I prepared to war with Lydians, who had long border with me and shared with me Asia Minor.
Second year I attacked 2 provinces and outnumbered the enemy (he gave me theese lands). Paralelly I started fighting on seas with lydian fleet (to cut off money from trade).
Third year I took another 2 lands without fight (but Lydians stayed in forts).

Forth year I took the rest of Lydia, except Efez. The enemy concentrated there 6,300 men:
27 x Lydian Archers (3456) - good in melee
15 x Lydian Heavy Infantry (1800) - heavy spearmen, with tight armor and good morale
9 x Lydian Heavy Cavalry (720)
2 x Hippies Akostis (160) - light horse javeliners
2 x Lydian Royal Guard (160)
1040 horsemen (160 archers) and 5250 footmen (3456 archers) was commanded by lydian king (the name was from Viking Invasion :-) with 5 stars of command.
I decided to atack at once to keep initiative. I sent all forces I had. Of course I left units besieging forts, so I had small reserves for any possibility.
My army was commanded by general with 4 stars (satrapa of ex-lydian capital province - Saris?). His name was Eoganan, I think it's celtic ;-)
I attacked with 9,160 men:
22 x Sparabaras (2816) - men with bows and large shields, better in melee than Lydian Archers
19 x Kardakes (2280) - anti-cavalry, rather defensive units
9 x Nubian Spearmen (1152)
5 x Immortals (640) - excellent units, elite fighters and archers in one
1 x Lydian Heavy Infantry (120)
8 x Medanite Cameliers (640) - archers on camels
8 x Persian Horse Archers (640) (Prsian Horce Archers ;-) - very good in melee and charge
9 x Persian Royal Guard (720) - elite of course
It created group of 640 cameliers (all archers), 1360 horsemen (640 archers) and 7160 footmen (3456 archers).
I predominated:
- in total number of soldiers: 1.45:1
- in footmen: 1.36:1
- in horsemen and cameliers: 1.92:1
- in archers and javeliners: 1.13:1
Remembering the superiority of lydian commander (2 stars more than my) and his prevelage of defence (terrain was hilly with a couple of forests) - it was well balanced fight.

Lydian king used mixed forces with 8 units of Lydian Archers, so I decided to assault them at once. I took for the first wave all my heavy cavalry with 4 units of Persian Horse Archers.
I almost finished the battle in 15 minutes. Almost.
In the chaos of battle a part of my units was surrounded by reinforcements of enemy.
I regrouped my forces, take reinforcements and started attacking. It takes me about 4 hours...
One wave after another were killed or retreated from the map. At the end I had only archers units. Sparabaras have large shield, so I tried to fight with bows. After a while my enemy took all forces and attacked. My archers were trying to fight, but they start running. And about 15 minutes before the end I was thinking The battle is lost.
But almost at the edge of the map on my side, I took the rest of my reinforcement (unfortunately - archers :-).
I regrouped my men, put them in defense formation and start shooting the nearest enemy units. Lydians stopped, trying shoot arrows back to me, but I had more archers - all my units were archers :)
So enemies started to waveing... and I took initiative. I commanded to attack - 5 minutes before the end of time.
And all my archers started to run on the enemy, who couldn't stay without fear. Lydians were retreating and when time was up, the victory was mine
I've lost 6692 men (73%). Lydians have lost 4216 killed and 208 imprisoned (70%). My army has lost 3 satrapes (governors).
It was the biggest and the longest battle I have ever fight in single player campaign, including STW, MTW, MTW+VI and Napoleonic Total War. As epic as persian wars were - if I can it imagine.

Hi all,
I finally got my new VGA so yesterday I was able to appreciate flips work in all it splendor for the first time in 1280x1024. Have to get some pics to you guys it was fantastic.
I fought a number of battles that were very interesting.
1. Persians Vs Lydians
This was the light army of the Persians Vs Lydian army. Some units have changed and I will explain them
Persians
2 x Persian Royal guard
2 x Persian Skythed chariots
2 x Sparabara (these have changed the have the pavice shield (sparabara) and a spear only they are to protect the archers behind them)
6 x Persian Archers (light archers with very good bows)
2 x Immortals
2 x Kardakes (these use the violin type shield now, heavier than the sparabara in all aspects)
Lydians
3 x Lydian Royal Guard
3 x Lydian Heavy Cavalry
4 x Heavy Lydian Infantry
4 x Lydian Archers
2 x Javelin Hippies
Deployment
I deployed in typical Sparabara formation
2 x Sparabara in 3 rows deep
6 x Persian Archers behind them
2 x Immortals in 4 rows deep basically covering the center behind the archers
2 x Kardakes covering the flanks of the Archers (one form each side)
2 x Persian Royal guard behind the Kardakes
2 x Persian scythed chariots to cover the flanks
Lydians moved there cavalry to attack my flanks only to find that the chariots were a deadly opponent but finally managed to root one of my chariot units but I have masked there retreat with a flank attack of the royal guard. Tough the first wave was with the Javelin hippies the second was with Heavy cavalry and the third with the Royal guard. To support my small numbers in cavalry I moved in the nearby Kardakes in that helped till his Heavy Lydian Infantry came.
All this time archer fire was in the form of blanked. I had a total of 960 archers. The Lydian archers were disimated and the Sparabaras could take all they had with out much problems. Finally he moved for the dead center 2 x Heavy Lydian Infantry covered by what ever was left of his archers and the generals Lydian Royal Guard.
They were decimated on the way but they reached my Sparabaras. Battle was brutal but the Sparabaras held there ground (that was the order).
Finally the flank gave in and two Royal guards and one chariot unit moved forward hunting the rooted units. In the center things were not that good and the Sparabaras were taking casualties. I moved the Royal guard and the chariots and attacked the Lydian archers on both flanks. That led to a massive root, that left the Lydian general and a heavy Lydian infantry unit fighting in the center. My other royal guard unit smashed in there rear and that was the end of it.
What was nice thing here is that the heavy Lydian army was decimated by archer fire. I have tuned down the effectiveness of the missiles from V.2.1. So a Second experiment was needed.

He move slowly for my center almost immediately. His heavy horses went for the flanks of the formation while the Royal guard remained with the infantry. The heavy horses were wiped out at the flanks but this time the main battle took place in the center. The heavy archer fire filled the battle field a total of 1200 archers moaned down the cavalry and infantry units. He finally reached the center, I withdrew the front archer line in the rear and now the Sparabaras were feeling the heat. I smashed his archers with the chariots. By this time the battle was heating up in front of the Sparabaras but they were holding (barely). I caved in and attacked with the chariots and his General rooted. A massive root was instant but I opened the chariots so they can retreat and regroup. His army regrouped in small broken and scattered formations in the archer range. That was the end of it they slowly rooted one by one under heavy Archer fire.

Making a new Beta tester patch, would be a good idea, then the beta testers can find some bugs, and report back, and then the most obvious bugs are removed when you compile the full download, then you don't have to upload new version of the big files and make several fix patches, right away.
also more easy to test parts of the game, becouse then the beta testers would focus on the new stuff in the mod, instead of just gettting the full package, and maybe missing some erros becouse of lack of overview...

Kom i understand a small unit-update to have a look and feel for some of the new units but the files will be so incomplete that for proper testing that will be useless i strongly advise a full version(although maybe incomplete) would be much better we need to install everything on a fresh and new install of MTW:VI v2.1 so we can spit through the files.If we use a small update most of the people will not have a clue what to report and what is a bug or just missing let alone figure out what is causing a CTD.

It is not so incomplete the Beta will include the new unit graphics new campaign texts and the new production files. There is a lot of testing in there to do. I can complete this beta on Sunday morning most of it was compiled for the first test of Antalis so little small fixes here and there and put in the new files. I just finished the Lydian and Persian cavalry units so there are only a couple of more Bifs for flip to do to close HTW units. I will mail you when I am ready to upload so Beta testers can start this week.
Now, something for you all. I was thinking on some new units so they have started to take form and this is the first one.
Dasian Romfeofori, these Dasian warriors use the Romfea a small pole-arm similar to the Nagitana only shorter. These are fierce warriors with many capabilities though the absence of any shield or armor makes them very vulnerable to missiles.
The second was the transformation of the Thracian Thureofori, they appeared later when the Thracians contacted the Celts namely the Galatans. Now we have the Thracian Romfeofori. Similar to Dasian ones but less arrogant, they use a Pelti and a javelin similar to the pertast. They come from the Thracian minor nobility and use some armor.

and have you put the eng-loc files into your language folder?

That C:\Total War\Total War command line looks strange. It should be typically something like C:\Program Files\Total War\ Hellenic - Total War or something.

please check this as i was preparing for the new update i made a new install of MTW:VI v2.1 and downloaded HTW Beta v2.1(and patch) from our own site(just like all the other people would do so i didn't use my old HTW files) seems to me we have a corrupt download problem i had to corrupt download file using WinRar it diagnosed ten files corrupt some portraits,Bif Textures and the upload screen so bad i couldn't even start the game after installing HTW(Downloaded it twice to be sure).Please check this all of you do as me make a new install of MTW:VI v2.1 and download the HTW files from the site.See if you have the same problem.I will get back to you on this....

Behind the scenes I´ve asked Tosa to upload the HTW from 3D downloads to the mizus server a couple of days ago and so he did.
But it seems that also the HTW from 3D downloads has the same problem, I guess.

BTW i will be away later today i posted a message on all forums about this problem,when you download HTW from the site and extract the files to a new folder WinRar will give you a diagnosis of what files are corrupt so you can pass it on yourself to Flip or Kom will you....

Ok we have made a Patch for the corrupted download files it is available at the HTW site in the Download section.We have tested it on a clean install and all works fine now,so just follow the instructions.Sorry for this inconvenience.

What you can do as a alternative is extract the HTW Beta v2.1 files to a folder outside MTW.
Look for the battle file give it a capital letter so rename it Battle.
Open the first patch extract the Textures and campmap files into that same outside folder so overwrite the old files.
Do the same with the new Patch this will have three files Textures,campmap and frontend_files.
Now Copy/Paste all the files into your new MTW:VI v2.1 install.
Convert the two MapTex and MapTex2 JPEG to TGA only using IrfanView.
Make sure you keep the unitsize to DEFAULT and all should work fine.

After seeing yet another person having problem with install, the developers should aim for only one big file who you can uncompress directly ontop of a medieval/Viking installation, just saying yes to overwrite.
only keeping the infraview conversion becouse of size/file format.
I just glad that i got a working installation, becouse with all those patched and renaming as it is now, then it must be like hell.

I totally agree but a little explanation first this corrupt download was only discovered recently and we had to figure out a quick way of dealing with it as we don't host the download files ourselves(this will be the case in the future).We could not repair them in the .Rar file so the patch is a good solution.Secondly as the next release is due to come changing the previous downloads sending them to Tosa Inu so he has to remove all the previous ones and putting a new link up as well changing the site for just a couple of weeks is to much trouble.Because we are planning to host the new version ourselves and moving all data to that host.As this hostserver is not active yet we are not going to do it now.The renaming is not really necessary only extracting all files will do but because of this corrupt download i wanted to be sure that people could finally enjoy HTW.

In the 2 next updates we will have the Peloponesian War and the Hellenistic era, as Komninos told.
You are making battles, Delium, Sphacteria, Mantinea and Cunaxa (401 BC)that will took place, some, in the Peloponesian War upcoming update. Remember that there will be new units that will appear just in that eras ( Late Hoplite, Sarissas, Yficratians and if Kom whant other light troops ). So, I ask my self, and also to Kom, how can we handle this? Is it difficult, Kom, to include in this next release those eras?

Hmm, this portrait ctd should not happen: Maybe try to download HTWpatch 2 at our website.
About 4-5 corrupt files were portraits and also at least one assasin portait.
The patch 2 should fix this.

I have some constructive critism on the models. I notice that the back of the shields are visible. Perhaps you like it, but IMO it's just wrong as nobody had emblems on the back of their shield. CA (and so do I) avoids this by having the right arm as the shield arm (when you look at a BIF then take the persons right arm), so the front of the shield will always be displayed and not the back. You have now placed it at the left arm, which is the logical thing to do, but since images are mirrored there is no real right or left arm, so forget logic...:inquisitive: ...if I wandered off to far, then: switch the shieldarm.
Do with this advise whatever you want, I do understand that your old animations are useless if you use the advice but perhaps you can use it for future animations.

Komninos is your man for this subject. The shields and weapons are not rendered with the soldiers. We use the coordinates system.We are thinking on use rendered shields in cases where is no room to draw shields in the bottom part of the bif.
We had other solution for the same problem, but it will take a lot of work. Just tell me, follwing your idea, how do you hide the back face of the shield in the back angle of the soldier? With hoplons is quite hard, they're monster shields.
What is funny is that I discovered in the last days some greek pics that give strongness to the back face painted shields theory, just they have different draws from the ones at the front face.
So, lets ear what Komninos may say about it. Thanks for launching the issue DJ.

I have been so looking forward to using this mod,and after 2 days of download after download, reading post after post for help I have hit a brick wall.
I initially downloaded the mod from the HTW site but a couple of files, one a map file, kept being corrupted. I read posts and followed some advice to download the mod from the 3D site. After 2 trys, and long waiting periods I got it and all files seemed fine.
Installed MTW+VI and patched to 2.01. Put on MOD followed by patch followed by corrupt files patch. Went into game and all seemed well, however when I come to the campaign map the Greek peninsula is in the top left hand corner but the map itself is showing the map of Europe with the icons for the mod floating on top.

I guess you have saved the maptex-files into the wrong folder: They have to be saved into the Textures/campmap/Hellenic folder.
Then the HTW campaignmap should be playable.

I rendered my WotR models together with the weapons, and not only does it look better but it also avoids the uninspiring positioning of the items. So I would definitely do that if I were you.

You can use normal MTW soldiers as an example. When viewed at a 157 degree angle (the back angle) then you should make the shield very small. In reality you should be looking at the back but this is not possible with only a front.

Hi all,
To take things from the top.
I am agents a going on the Peloponnesian / Hellenistic age now. It will complicate things bring new things to worry about and also intermix with the upcoming RTW. It will also bring a serious delay in the release of the HTW that is so close now since most of the units are finished and we are almost ready for the first unit beta patch for the testers
The later introduction of the new campaigns will be error-proof since the self extracting zip will put everything you need in its place with no further intervention.
The shield thing is difficult. The main problem is that if you render the unit and the shield then you can only have one unit / bif folder that’s a big waist of space So it can only happen to similar units i.e. Skythic type units.
I had a solution that made the coordinate thing very difficult and complicated thus error intense. It needed a low resolution back face of a shield to be used. The unit would have two shields when the front face was visible then the it would occupy the usual shield coordinates When the back face was visible then the front face coordinates would turn in to 0s resulting in a non appearing shield. The rear face would be now visible and using the shield coordinates.
I can try but this is going to be very difficult to implement

Displaying back and front of shields
Well it is possible if you want to stick to it which you apperently do (I still believe that the CA solution is the simplest/best). You can display the back and front of shield if you do the following:
1. Add a front and back image of the shield in the BIF.
2. In Shields.txt you should capture both images.
3. In UnitName_S.txt you write that the unit uses both shields (units can use 2 shields, just look at pavise crossbows).
4. In the Items\Shields folder you start with making 1 set of coordinates. Then copy the folder so that both shields have their own folder (for example Shield1 and Shield2).
5. Look at your animations and decide at what angle the front is visible. Go the front shield folder and whenever the front is no longer visible you add 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 (or all zeros, but I'm not sure wether that doesn't cause a crash).
6. Do the same for the back angle; nullify all the coordinates when the back is not visible.
If you have problems I can give you an example. This might even work and look good I think it's pretty easy to do and it looks more realistic, the only worries you might have is that the back shields will take more space in the BIF and that shields are not that recognisable from the back.

No, you didn't understand me then My solution is far more easier than yours. In fact you can use the exact same coordinates that you are using right now, except for the deadeasy nullifying of coordinates when the front/back is not visible.
This does not bring any more errors when compared to normal positioning of shields.
Let's try again:
- Use an old set of coordinates.
- Add the back image of a shield in the unitBIF.
- The unit uses both the back and front shield, for example Shield1 and Shield2.
- When the front is visible then use the existing coordinates. When not visible then nullify the coordinates for that angle ONLY
- When the back is visible then use the existing coordinates. When not visible then nullify the coordinates for that angle ONLY

I took Lacedemonians (Sparta).

Hi all,
Under heavy pressure and some extra thinking there is a small change in plans.
Flip wonted to see his Yficratian and late hoplites in the game, Antalis has a series of excellent historical battles in lace that demand later type units and many of you wonted some more time to play in late.
So now there is more time, last night I rebuilt the start pos files to extend the game. So these are the changes:
Early
Name : Geometric 100 – 250 (750BC – 600BC)
Starting conditions: Greeks in Asia Minor coastline, Phrygians on the decline, Lydians have most of Asia Minor
High
Name : Archaic 250 – 450 (600BC – 400BC)
Starting conditions: Greeks only in Greece, Lydians rule Asia Minor, Persians in the picture in the four Eastern provinces driving to Sardis with a huge force
Late
Name : Classical 450 – 550 (400BC – 300BC)
Starting conditions: Atheneans rule most of the Aegean and Asia Minor, Spartans control all of Peloponnesus the Ionian islands (under the Corinthians) with the exception of Argos. Macedonians have a good piece of land in the north.
New units needed for this are the Yficratian, Phalangites and companions. All Bif files are ready but I have to make the coordinate files :( Some more units will be needed for the Gastrafetis, Lithobolos for Late and a battering ram for All periods.

Hi DJ,
Can’t really say if there is a difference in your or my method. But it is risky and I should built a small Excel file that will do it risk free.
In the Bifs I made three shields two that I needed and one back face. In the shield file I made put the two shields and then made a series of dummy shields and in position 6 put the back face.
Once I had all the shield coordinates I made two folders one front and one back and copied all the coordinate files in there. Then I opened the files and put 0 0 0 0 1 1 1 1 0 to the equivalent points in the files, that is the back faces in the front views and front faces in the back views.
Then placed the files in the directory and gave the Late_Hoplites shields 1,6. Then placed the front face coordinates in Shields1 directory and the back face in Shields6.
That was the original idea we had but it carries the risk that you accidentally delete an valid face so you get a shield flashing
This will happen to all hoplite like units in the game with the condition I have space in the files to put the back face. In most files I do cause I have redundant shields so one of them will be used for the back face.

Make this:
Extract the patches to a temporary folder and copy all files in the patches and paste them to HTW.
Files like campmap-folder, Battle-folder and so on.

Hi all,
This new unit is the most expected unit for HTW. I can’t hide the fact that I was very reluctant to use it due to the TW constraints but it all appears to be going well so you will get it in the later years for the Persians only.
Now thanks to Flips effords we have the Elephant working
The size of the unit is just 16 but it can cause significant damage if supported. If they are left alone they will be eliminated by and rooted especially if they face a Pike unit They will not be as powerful as you expect them to be

I have VI I install the 2.0.1 patch... cant figure out whats wrong it just quits when loading I know about changing the JPG to TGA ive got this game to work on my computer before.. dont know why it wont now..

Since you had it once play I think you can make it again ;)
If the single battles are working then most probably it is an error in the conversion of the TGA. Not all TGA formats are compatible with the MTW. Try Irfanview.
Now it might need one of the patches but since you had it once before there is a good chance you have them too.
But it would be good if you go a few pages back it is certain you will find one of the Antalis installation debugging conversations that will prove right for you.
Sorry for this but a good 20 pages are devoted on installation instructions and I don’t wont to get in to that once again. So please make a search or mark some pages ... I will go back and try to dig out some of that stuff.

Hi CID007,
Can’t say a definite time since we have made some major changes in the HTW that now spans from 750BC till 300BC with the Late period starting at the Peloponnesian war period.
I can tell you that the units are ~90% done and are on the final refinements for the first Beta unit pack. Thought this might not have the final Sarissa and Yficratian units as BIFs but an older version will be used instead till I get the stupid coordinates down.
A full beta might make it till the end of May. Sorry for the delay but we have come a full circle remaking the units about 2 time since flip started and some other things have appeared too.

OK played this a few times. I noticed major unbalanced units. Spartan hoplites are 360 florin to maintain but you can pay about half that and get the same type of unit alittle less powerful that takes an 4th of the time to train.
Also they start poor as hell, you gotta attack immediately to win.
I suggest you incrrease province incomes, start with less buildings and units for slow progression. And please fix spelling errors. I know my spelling sucks also but there are some horrid spelling errors in the game.

They have access to the best hoplite in the game, and they can have them very early, so they can beat the crap out of everyone.
I played the spartans when i was outnumbered 5:1 and easyly won the battle.

Well nobody noticed that there were a couple of Ballistae in the castle siege ... well that’s no news for the MTW but for the HTW ... yes you are going to have them but under the name Euthitonon that was the name used for them along with Gastrafetis and Oxivolos we are working on them at the moment. They will be available in late period only to the Greek factions.
I am also thinking for the Boeotean engine - similar to flame thrower - using the naphtha bomb.
King Azzole we are using new descriptions ... I am the most horrifying speller ... any way when it is out you can have a go at the text files in the LOC\ENG folder.
You are right about the Spartans. In the Early period they are just the most Dorian of the Dorian people. The top honcho are the Argives (Argeans) who invented the Phalanx way of war. Till the Spartans develop some power they will have to fight it out hard with there brotherly neighbors the Argeans and there hated enemies the Messineans. In fact they had to fight two wars with the Messineans to win in the second one. But later (in high period) they will be really powerful.

I just think its insane the spartans start with losing 4000 florin a year from the getgo. I might have turned unit size up higher though maybe thats why... Not sure but it seems very hard, like your forcing people to war immediately. Just thought it would be funner if you had just a handful of basic buildings and little units and had to build your city/state from scratch. perhaps in the bronze age mod?

Due to the map thing (Size) we have scraped the music though it is in our thoughts. Though making a cyclic music that will work properly with the MTW engine will need the use of a musician that will actually compose it. I am thinking on some Greek adlibs using fraises form satiric plays or Tragedies but this will take long to make.
The transform of the map TGAs to JGP format due to size problems (the v.2.1 would have been +200MB download with out the JPG transformation) it is really impossible to make a self installer with out someone coding it. Zimoa has pointed me to an installer that I will have to check before I use it to pack things up. I would rather have a self extracting RAR file at the moment. A self installer is something I am thinking about for a long time but I am still skeptic. (Just an other point introduce bugs)

Been absent for a day and with sparse access for the most of the week due to RL (read: job) overload.

I installed the HTW mod, or unzipped the 3 files actually. Changed the jpg's to TGA's in paintshop pro 8 and then i started it up, left the default size on the units as it is.
put my resolution on 1024*768 (for testing) and then selected a campaign, selected a faction.
Now when i select start campaign, it goes to my desktop anybody knows why and how to fix this? I installed the extra CTD patch also..
(ps. turned virus progs off also)

Only use IrfanView for the conversion of JPEG to TGA or you will have CTD's,a link to this freeware program is at the HTW site.

I made a self-installer for testing using our current public version HTW v2.1 Beta.It contains all files and patches,has a uninstall option that works,it will also automatically create a HTW desktop icon and start-up links in your taskbar.Converting JPEG files to TGA is also not needed anymore,ASA i have our new server up i will upload it and change the install links and instructions on the HTW site.So all the old install problems should be over.The file size will be around 63 Mb though.So i'me looking for some ways to compress them also because i will use this for our next version,but be a little patient we are working hard on it,the new version will be around 250 Mb so just wait and see...

Ok the old HTW v2.1 Beta version is now available as a selfinstalling program,check the HTW site.The file size is about 65 Mb,i downloaded it with a fast connection in less than 10 minutes.

First, I would just like to complement you all on an excellent mod. For a long time now I've been looking for just such a game set in hellenic Greece.
I experienced no problems with the installation or CTD issues that so many people seemed to have had. I only encountered one glitch: in battle, dead soldiers immediately disappear. I've been reading other posts and it doesen't appear to be a common problem.

If you cannot reach the site this must be temporarily,no bandwidth problem for sure,and the site is not the problem,it must be the main host-server because i myself cannot exit the service now,so try again later.

After reading many posts about HTW, I salivatingly downloaded the mod, installed it (and moved medieval.cfg into main HTW directory) and double-clicked .... nothing. Just the starting picture of VI. I uninstalled (which also did not work properly as Prince45.tga refuses to be deleted) and reinstalled again in another folder in the MTW main folder... Still nothing Help please ....

You don´t need to move medieval.cfg anywhere (only if you have the turning to another year bug).
Install HTW v21 to a fresh MTW VI201 installation.
If you don´t have the english version read the instructions at the HTW site in the downloadsection.

I have been trouble figuring out Greek time lines, and how they where supported in the mod.
I have found out the following about timelines:
Mykenian (spelling), from 1650 BC - 800 BC
Hellenic: 800BC - 338BC
Hellenistic: 338BC - 148BC
I have been confused by a few terms and questions:
That greek Dark age, when was that?
and when was Greek Bronze age?
is there really a Hellinic and a Hellenistic time, or is this just the same?
As i see it the late Hellenistic time is no supported in the mod.

The Hellenic period you can call the Greek period when the Greek Democratic City States flourished.
The Hellenistic period is the period after Alexander's rule when great parts of Asia and Africa where ruled by his successors and for many decades came under Greek cultural influence.

Now when the new version i comming, can you please add dates and a BIT more information on the different ages when you choose it for a campaign, i just think it would be SO uncomplete if you guys did all that graphics work and such, and then people are getting confused about dates and periods.
I must still say that terms pre-geometric....is kinds useless information for guys like me, when i began playing the mod, also the general technology i the period would be nice, becouse information like ....in this period Bronze armour and weapons are most commen.... then i would proberly better find out that this is the greek bronze age im gonna play in.

The installer will by DEFAULT pick as target directory to install itself into:
C:\Program Files\Total war\MTW
But if your MTW:VI v2.1 files are located somewhere else on your disc,make sure that you direct the installer to that mainfile.Before install you see on the right side next to the DEFAULT target directory:C:\Program Files\Total war\MTW a button that allows you to browse through all your files that are on your harddisc and find the proper file where you need to install HTW into.

Count Flanders, I do read readme files, so your assumption is wrong. I also recognize the differnce between the DEFAULT and actual folder I installed MTW VI 2.01 into. Furthermore, the entire installation is CLEAN -- I de-installed the entire game and installed it again.
All this is what the installer in the readme file recommends, I have done it. The game itself runs fine, but the HTW won't start.
Help with the installation will be greatly appreciated. Attitude won't be.

The new version will have all new descriptions some of them are even on the site already besides that v2.1 is a BETA so not complete and it was not our priority because we changed and added so many units that we focussed on the new version from than on.And if you don't get enough pleasure from it wait for the new version or have a look at the unitprod files using Gnome editor and look at the different unitstats or don't play at all...

The only way that HTW won´t work is, if you have installed it into a false directory/folder.
I see that you have the english version, so I don´t know what your problem could be.
The selfinstaller was tested by Count Flanders and by me and it worked perfect.
The only thing you have to do is to search your fresh MTW+VI201 install directory and install HTW to it.
Thats all.

The desktop shortcut is also by default set on:
Target
C:\Program Files\Total war\MTW\Medieval_TW.EXE
So if you installed MTW:VI in a different folder and you want the shortcut to work just rightclick on the shortcut go to properties and change the Target file.

I will try re-installing it tonight when I get back from work. I have been putting it in the main MTW folder, but under a subfolder HTW -- maybe that is where the issue lies. Another possibility, albeit a small one, is that the downloaded file was corrupted ... although the install won't work then ...
I get the exact same problem that Spartacus described -- the MTW startup picture shows up and then nothing happens.
CZoF, maybe the shortcut is it I will definitely try this first

We understand that people without any computer knowledge even will have difficulties with this very simple installer.Like Antalis said we cannot make it more easy if you follow the instructions it will work,it is almost everytime a small thing that causes the Mod not to work.Antalis and i helped hundreds and hundreds of people so follow the instructions step by step and be critic of yourself first.If you get stuck post a good report of what you did and what is not working and most of the time we can help you.There is nothing wrong with the installer it is the man behind it that made a mistake or has a problem and if we have corrupt files your posting helps to find them so please don't get angry so quickly just read,think and try if you get stuck we are here to help you.

There is nothing tricky, really nothing.
Its as simple as it can be.
We don´t know where you have installed MTW, so we set the default directory as installations path.
You have to change it by yourshelf to your MTW directory.
Thats the only thing you have to do.

Are you sure, that you using a fresh installation of MTW+VI?
And have never installed an other mod to it (or installed before HTW into a false folder into it, so that the HTW files are twice there?).
I recomend to install MTW+VI+VI201 patch +HTW v21 again.
