Happy New Year,

Apparently you all have gone headlong with the mod, ...

Any way I will try to merge all the changes in the production Excel files I use.

Now Sir Moody can you develop a nice Hero file for each of the period. for Dark Age the names I have set are OK but for the rest are not good. Also some Generals, emissaries, ... are needed in each faction. Can you look in to it?

Some thing new now ... last night I have made an attempt to merge the Trojan war units in the HTW map and using the most of the stuff we have for HTW. It took me ~2hours but it went OK. So We can easily built a mod starting at 1600 till 1000BC http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif this will be a detail to the one planed for the larger map but will make unit development fast and easy. First Test was Great.

DJ can we work together on the Chariot thing?? I have some limited knowledge to make it but it will look a lot better with your input.

Another thing i can do thru the Hero File is set Real life Kings and Heros to pop up during the campaign - all i need is a list of the heros/famous kings ud want and the date they came into being http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif

OK, Thessalia and Boeotia will be changed (I think I will invert the colour so Thessalia will be white-blue and Boeotia bluw-white).
Persians are Yellow but more to the Red side with out being orange ... any better ideas will be helpful.

I have been fascinated with the older period so I have finally ported all the stuff of the Trojan mod to the HTW map and now it works nicely ... would you like to see the stuff in the next update???? (I just don't have bif chariot units) http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Hello Development Team, Happy New Year to You all

I know You are busy with the Mod, but perhaps besides You can help me, too.

I am trying to install HTW 2.1 but have some strange problems. The link to the guide a few pages back is out of order and I don't understand the install instructions from the HTW-homepage.

I have created a folder C/.../Hellenic-total war for a new installation of MTW + VI + Patch2.1. From campmap/portraits I have copied the Viking folder and named the copied one "Hellenic". But what does "paste" mean? Must be a PC special for I cannot find a senseful meaning in the dictionaries I have available. Does it mean: let the renamed folder "Hellenic" quietly rest in the campmap/portraits folder? I did so.

Shall I delete the Viking folder? I did not do so; instead I let it in the campmap/portraits-folder.

I unzipped the mod and the smallpatch directly in the folder C/.../Hellenic-total war. When the programm asked wether the existing files should be overwritten I clicked "Yes". Is this right or must the Mod-Files be added to the existing files? I don't think so, but...

Then I looked for the files to change with IrfanView. Now the problem: there are no files MapTex.jpg and MapTex2.jpg in the folder textures/campmap/hellenic http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/confused.gif

What is wrong? Hope You can help me

PS: Special question to Antalis. Does a install instruction in German exist?

hi, you did everything well, overwriten its the way.
Just check that you are getting the right patch "HTW-Beta-2-V-2-1.rar" 55.633K.
Now tell me the complete path to your HTW install "C/.../Hellenic-total war". I suspect its a incorrect install procedure. There's a generic folder"MTW", you may change the name to it, then inside a default folder "Medieval - Total war", dont change this name. Its in this last one you have to put the files. Paste meens "leinen" in dictionary.

You'll need two programs Winrar and infan view both can be found on WWW.google.com
I'm not one of the development team ,but a long player of this great mod. What I do to install is this
1 Make sure it's a clean install upto VI2.01
2Click on explore metw
3click on search in your tool bar type in Vikings click ok
4Rename all the viking FOLDERS to Hellenic, you may be stopped on one ,but carry on until all are do.
5 go through previous again you should have one more to do
6 Now extract mod into METW DIR it will ask you if you wish to overwrite click yes to all
7 Now this is the point where you can become stuck.
You'll need a program called infan view its on the posts or use google to find it
Click on explore METW click on textures/campmap/hellenic
8 Inturn open both the map files Maptex2 Maptex with infan view and then save as an tga file remember where you save them.now go to your saved map files highlight them both right click copy
go back to textures/campmap/hellenic folder in METW and click edit in your tool bar click paste Done
Works for me
Best of luck http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

ok, download these three files:

Beta:
Beta (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/HTW-Beta-2-V-2-1.rar)

Small patch (for ships):
small patch (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/small-patch.zip)

startpos fix:
startpos fix (http://filipeabranches.no.sapo.pt/MTW/startpos.zip)

Installation:

1.Use a new installation of MTW+VI.

- Then unzipp the "Beta" into the new MTW main directory.
- Unzipp the "Small patch" into the same directory.
- Unzipp the "Startpos fix" to a folder outside of the new MTW installation (rename it to HTW if you want) and copy all three files of it into your "campmap/startpos"-folder.

2. Now open your "Textures/campmap/Hellenic" folder and convert the "mapTex.jpg" and "mapTex2.jpg" to TGA format.
Use "IrfanView" for that:
IrfanView (http://www.tucows.com/preview/194967.html) and put the two tga´s into the same folder.

If you don´t have the english version of MTW: Open your "Loc" folder:
After you have installed all three files (Beta, Small patch and Startpos-fix) from above you get a "Eng"-folder in this Loc-folder.
Open it and copy all files from it to your language folder: In my case from the "Eng"-folder to the "German"-folder.

Now it should work.

Thanks a lot, flip, youone and Antalis.

I had a version of HTW 2.1 with only 15 MB.
http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif

Now I've catched the real one and will try again.

Your explanations differ a bit from each other and also from the instructions on the homepage. Are there several ways to succeed?

Antalis, is it not longer necessary to rename the folders from "Viking" to "Hellenic"? Is it not necessary to copy the folder "Battles/Mapimage/Arid" und put it in the folder "Temperate"? Don't you have to delete the Campmap/Portraits/Hellenic/Orthodox and copy/ put in instead the catholic folders?

When (if) I succeed in installing the Mod I could write a install instruction for PC stupids like me for the homepage if You think it is necessary. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

Antalis::
01-03-2004, 14:39
Yes you don´t have to rename a folder anymore.
Also you don´t have to copy any portaits and paste them anywhere.

About the Mapimages: Forget it for now.
Its not that important.
If you don´t copy and paste them from the Arid into the Temperate folder (in Battle/Mapimage) then you get no image in temperate terrain provinces for castle previews.
But copy it AFTER you had installed the hole mod, not as first act.

About the CTD: I don´t know if there is really a bug.
Its so wirad, I know that problem, but other times with a new install it works... .
I search to find the reason for that.
Till now with no success.

If something is really wrong: After a long search I guess it would have something to do with the Unitprod or Buildingprod.
Maybe also with the campaignmap.txts.
But I guess with the unitprod or build.prod .

Because if you try to use the old v1.0 camp.txts, unitprod and buildingprod with the new v 2.1 then also the problematic installation works (were this CTD was).

First at all, you´re doing a great work with this mod, is very good. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cool.gif

However, i see a important issue here, the Trade system distorts the playable. There are too many ships and the trade income is too decisive and generates too profits. And if the engine of MTW doesn´t stand out, is the naval combat and trade system.

For example, in my current game (begin 250), playing Spartans:

Year 278:
Illyrians -112543 F
Macedon +33825 F
Athene +140969
Corinthea +194687
Lacedem +54776
Boeotea +11512
Lydians +384798
Argians +47636

Year 300:
Illyrians -21203 F
Macedon +5514 F
Athene +64299
Corinthea +172714
Lacedem +17934
Boeotea -40862
Lydians +40648
Argians +43881

Sincerely, this isn´t a balanced game. IMHO, i look for a similar trade system as Medieval: decrease rather the number of resources and to be a secundary thing. However if a player gets a good trade net, the profits can be interesting. And make taxs the main income (as Medieval).

I know that Trade was very important during Ancient Greece however Medieval isn´t a good trade game and orientate it in that direction, would be follow the wrong way.

Success at last http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/idea.gif

I get it running, it is quite easy if one follows Antalis advice.

The Mod is great work. The units look much better than in the original MTW. How did you manage this?

I fear for the rest of my hollidays I have to play, play, play...

There are minor things to change but I think you know what it is. Pictures of units for example. If you can't get one of some perhaps I could draw something.

To the trade system I cannot say much now but it is very important to balance it because in MTW the nation with more money wins. I would like if every nation (except the Persians) would have little money because I don't like huge armies.

Could you tell something about the files in which the abilities weapons are defined? I looked to the hellenic-unit-prod but I can't find definitions of the projeciles (for slings for example) in the projectile-stats-file.

I will have a deeper look to the hellenic-unit-prod in the next days. On the first look compared to MTW most units seem to have very high melee boni but why not if balance is okay.

By the way: Akondistes have defense bonus 2 and armour level 2, Peltasts defence bonus 0 and armour level 1. Both units seem to be without armour in the pictures. Did the Akondistes wear some form of armour? Otherwise they should have the same value as peltasts.

But now I have to go back to HTW

PS: The only thing I realy don't like is that many lightly
armed units seem to wear big heavy military boots although they should go with bare feet. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/mecry.gif

The main problem of trade in MTW is that it´s too fragile. In times of peace, trade profits can be important but if suddenly you are at war and sea blockaded begins, quickly you will bankrupt if your income depends mainly on trade.

I think it´d work better a system mainly based on tax income. It´s more or less stable and the AI can correctly handles without bankruptcys.

I see tha maintenance costs of troops too expensive. However in the battlefield, the fight(Hoplites are great)is really good, better than Medieval so far. It´s incredible to see the Hoplites fight until the end. Great work here http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

ok ive spent the last week working on the Prod list to try and find out how it all works and i THINK ive come up with the reason for al lthe strange production

how it works is simple - all the types of personality have a base score - this is the production value that will in normal conditions will be used

then their are some additions - these are ADDED upon the base value so when these additons are added some values that are normally low suddenly are High and thus are produced

this is probably the reasoning the AI is making behind the odd choices ofr production

im testing a new set of values right now

My campaign is going okay, instead of having thousands of skirmishers they now have hoplites in their armies In fact, more than 50% of their armies are now hoplites, which makes it Very vrey gvrey fun. Though it is extremely hard to eliminate a faction, for they are overseas and my ships are easily lost in the giant swarm of enemy ships piled in the many blockaded seas.

I have to resort to sending assassins or bribing an army or something, i can rarely get troops across water for some reason.

Hi all,

First of all I have updated the Small Patch- (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/NewDA.zip) file with rivers so I need your opinion ... I personally hate the way MT treats river battles
Any way most rivers in Greece can be crossed on foot nearly 90% of time. (Pinios is one big river but most of the time you will see a small stream running not a mighty river like Danube) On the other hand at those times river battles happened near the shallows not across bridges.

That is a hell of a map ... keep it up

Díaz de Vivar, yes ships need some tuning.

Sir Moody,

Sorry ... I have not forgotten about you.
1. I will try to send you a mail with the Excel file I am using to get the units and there values. It is an enhanced production file from CA. I don't like to treat its unit separately ... I try to build universal function if I can.

2. On Kings - Hero names ... I will try to find some though Rosacrux can be a lot more helpful here (if he has the time). I was thinking to make each faction start with 2 - 3 heroes and then produce some every 20 - 30 years. Heroes can be Generals or anything else.

Can we have a short "historial" of maps development for HTW? What releases, and versions, wich maps work with wich version of HTW. We have packs for Castles, rivers, campaign maps, etc. Also wich maps goes with the small fixs and Startpos fixs? Hi all,

I Read something about standard shield drawings for some of the factions. So:
Argians get the Gorgon (The strange face with fangs)
Thebians get the Club
Spartans the Lamda

So this brought some changes around ... it took my afternoon to remake them and here are the pics of most of the Greek units.

1. Slingers, Dark Age Hoplites, and Acondiste (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/images/00000000.jpg)

2.same, Marching (http://www.original21paris.com/timos/images/00000001.jpg)

I am sad to be reporting a possible bug.

BACKGROUND:
Geometric, playing Athens. I possess both Athens and N. Cycladic isles. Neither the Saronic gulf nor the West Aegean sea is hostile. Boats are in the water.

PROBLEM:
At the start of a turn, with troops in both provinces, I can move troops starting in Attika to N. Cyc. However, I cannot move troops stationed in North Cyc. to Attika. There must be a set_neighbors problem with the sea region(s). I am suprised that it did not crash

(cough) This is of course, very bad news for someone who moved nearly all his troops over in a recent invasion. (cough).

Flip ... very nice, just a question , are you going by painting the bifs? or like DJ by a 3D model?
Cause if you are going by the bifs ... you are in for a rough ride
And as a side note ... since these are dark age troops the helmet need some modification ... the plum needs to be elevated on a small spike. Take a look at the images I posted some time ago.

========================================

LOTR-Helper, I know ... that is because the Cycladitic islands use the inner sea region for troop transport ... I have to change that I think ... I can make a quick fix with the map ... but no map fixes are quick or painless. A new map is in the pipeline ... but it will take some time to be realized in the game ... I will take a note of that.

3D pure. I'm tryng to automatize tasks. Then it will be quick. There's a program made for LORT that speed the job in bifs produtions (UM_LoTR.vbs), but not easy at first eye. Also it uses a dll "csImageFileTrial.dll", that will expire this month for trial porposes, lol. Is there a quick way to produce coordinates for the images rectangles? What I'm doing for now is to use other bifs and positioning the new sprites over. This is good, because, for example, for HTW, we dont need to change or touch in any coordinates, Actions, Shields or weapons. The problem is that I'll have more space limitations. Any tips?

Flip,

I sent you a large mail explaining a lot of stuff and giving all the info I have. I like the detail on it excellent It would be good if it had the actions:

1. Stand
2. Walk
3. Run
4. Charge (upper grip, not running but more of a fast march)
5. Fight with spear (upper grip)
6. Fight with sword
7. Through

Congratulations with your unit http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/cheers.gif

You should download csImageFileTrial.dll every month. A bit of a hindrance, but it's free.

UM_LOTR does make coordinates for the rectangles. I don't use the MakeBIF button since it screws up the palette, but you can use MakeFrames. When done processing you should go to UnitFrames\Uruk_Hai and open DICXref_NegInf.txt. Scroll down till you see a list of apdic action 23 23 23 14 15 These are the coordinates for all the actions. Then open another notepad, open the unit's actionpage and start copying the coordinates only. Leave out apdic action.

Good luck with it

Cheers, Duke John

Hi all,

Kom, I receaved your email, thanks, a lot of information to deal with and so less time. It will be nice full free time to work on HTW.

OK, 3D guys, Poser 5 is the way to go. Antalis, you got me.
I'm beginning with that program, a lot of potencials but need time to take all the advantages. You have to look for resources in the net for Poser. If someone wanna work with Poser I may give some templates. I got a ready made Hoplite template that I can now change and adapt. Building for scratch is a pain.

DJ, thanks, I'm aplying new images over your bifs. With this no need to recalculate coordinates. The disvantage are space limitations. The LOTR program is a bit mistery for me till now. Get Poser, and we may exchange files. Or, better, if I'l send you new animations can you easily build the coordinates? Because this is a Hommeric task, we have to distribut the work. Poser as interactivity with Light wave, you can adjust some elements there and reimported them to Poser.

Antalis, I got your new campaign files, need time to test it.

Just a few things

think I spotted a bug with the territories Lacedaemo, Argolis, and Cynuria...cant seem to land an invasion force from the sea to it. I tried it the other way round and departing from these territories is fine. Also the sea zones in general needs working on, I can move freely across most sea zones in one go, not sure if this was intended.

Game play wise, I think trading is a little too easy in this game, you can amass a fortune with only a handful of territories. Usually very easy to allies with all the other greeks city states and the money would just roll in. Also what is the garrisoning power of akondiste? I need a lot of them to pacify a new province, I think this holds back the AI a little as most of time I see rebellion after rebellions on AI held territories.

only a little feedback from myself as I am enjoying the game, cant wait for updates. Continue the good work http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Just a little insight ...
V.1 and V.2.1 are totally incompatible so if you started a game in V.1 saved and then placed V.2.1 it will definitely not work. Also it is bad practice to install V.2.1 over V.1 since a lot of things have changed and you will end up with many files that should not be there.

Antalis I will try and see what is wrong with the file you sent me. Early V.2 had a problem with rebellions (they used ship units on land causing a CTD). This does not happen any more.

Also Acondiste is a very light unit so use the hoplites for garrison.

Marco, the trade/Tax thing has been fixed so now things are somewhat more ballaced. Also the Eastern provinces have an advantage since they are to compensate for the large provinces in the east out of the map area.

Sir Moody,
The numbers in the columns used are the normalised values (present_value/MAX_of_values) and these are what is mainly used for the faction behaviour. The way things are calculated there is a mixture of what "needed" most. So Cath and Orth should look more for armour and Muslim to light missile units and Cav. There is also a residue from the past functions used by CA. In general I am not confident with all that yet.

1. Please don't laugh at me too much (you can do a bit), but I wish to start coping with unit-creation and unit appearance. I planned to start with the cavalry in HTW, but I've seen it's already on the way (had to play and couldn't visit this page for some time). Creating new units would also be useful for my planned Minimod "Warfare around 1500 AD".

I tried changing the bif-files, but that can bring you to a lunatic asylum. Now I read about your 3D images and saw flips new unit. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/eek.gif

So perhaps I should buy Poser 4 or 5 and create 3D-units. From your point of view: is it a case of megalomania to try Poser 5 or somethink like this, if you are not (and I am not) already a graphics specialist?

http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/joker.gif

In the Dungeon I don't find much about the creation of new units (graphics). Can you give me a hint?

2. I have played HTW 2.1 a lot and I really like it. Never got a crash or someting like this.

Some little remarks:
- Is it for purpose that you can go over wide areas of the sea in one move with every ship (exept merchant ships)? The reach of ships should be a bit shorter and perhaps different.
- I don't like the fact that you get all the high developed ships (esp. triere and late triere) so fast. There should be more buildings to get one.
- The big mighty ships should be a little bit slower than smaller ships.
- I couldn't build a keep in conquered provinces in the Geometric times. Is this for purpose? Why?
- Why is there not the possibility to build metalsmiths in provinces with iron (I gave all to get one in the first play, but all was in vain http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/biggrin.gif ).
Maybe it's for the balance of the units?
- Why did you not use "Slav warriors" for the Scythian warband? It would harmonize with the unit picture (which the "PlateS" unit appearance does not).
- It's a bit strange when my general of the Thebian Sacred Band is blamed for his interest in boys http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/shock.gif
- I did not play the asian nations yet, but the Illyrians are a bit too weak, I think. It's not so easy to fight the Greeks, which is for sure historically correct. Maybe I'm to weak for the challenge.
- Profit from trade is huge, so you can get a fortune very easy. Income from agriculture should be favoured even more than in your first fix for this.
- Till now it has happened to often that the Persian king died without a heir. But maybe that was coincidence. Because everybody grabed the rebel provinces, the Persian had great difficulties to recover. But they should be the superpower in the game.

Only little stuff to remark. Even if you wouldn't change a lot, HTW now would be a great Mod. I look for the future development with great delight. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/bigthumb.gif

I've forgotten something. I really like it that you need a lot of units to hinder rebellions from starting. Some others don't seem to agree to this, but for me this feature is the best hindrance to rapid expansion and nasty mega-nations. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wave.gif

This is a patch against the turning to another year bug (CTD) for HTW v2.1 Beta:

This patch can protect your HTW version against the CTD bug.

BUT please, don´t install it, if you don´t have the turning to another year problem

If you had CTD´s (crash to desktops, when you turned to another year) then install this patch to
protect your NEW campaigns against the same problem.
But only then, install it, please

Installation:
Copy the "Medieval.Cfg"-file in your HTW main directory.

It protects your HTW against the CTD bug if you beginn a new campaign, but I doupt that it could heal
a damaged save-game, but try it.

You can get it with this link:

CTD-patch (http://max45.250free.com/HTW-beta_patch2.zip)

I hope that this patch is really the solution for all problems with this CTD, lets see.

ok, the patch works: But huge unit size in the options causes still a CTD in the next round, but except that, all unit sizes working.

I must confess that I´m always playing on default size: Is this (that you cannot use the huge size) a common problem of the mod?
Do you use huge?

Also the resolution should not be too low.

This is going fine, fase one (walk) is done. Early generic hoplite is on the way. I was a bit concerned with the space of the bifs. Decided to build them from scratch, new actions pages is more easy to calculate that I imagine, work around with color paletes and I think I found a automated process that leads to a quick prodution of sprites. Beggining its allways the hard part http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

Hi flip,

Just a quick not to take on the Hoplite.
Dark age Hoplites virtually from 1000BC till early 5th century BC used that Bell shaped armour I sent you. The armour extended in the front and the back It was also more flat. It took the muscular structure much later (Hellenistic age). The armour it self is more or less flat with some drawings on it. Near the abdomen it turns out words to give some freedom of movement.
The crescent of the helmet is smaller (just the area above the head ... at least for the Hoplites the officers usually had a larger one and Kings the "triple crescent" found in some god statues just look at the pictures I sent you.

Hi BattleKnight,

Sorry I am not the best animation people around and I have no tool for this bit of work that is really very difficult. I will try but don't expect something soon.

dunnichen,

- Is it for purpose that you can go over wide areas of the sea in one move with every ship (exept merchant ships)? The reach of ships should be a bit shorter and perhaps different.

Well it is recorded that a Triere with a crack crew crossed the Aegean from Athens to Lesvos in 12houres The area of the map s not very big that is why ships cross the Aegean in one move.

- I don't like the fact that you get all the high developed ships (esp. triere and late triere) so fast. There should be more buildings to get one.

Actually you have to build up for them I just have the main provinces ready to build them.

- The big mighty ships should be a little bit slower than smaller ships.

They are ... Don’t forget Penticonter, Biere, Triere all are about the same size with more oars. The large Egyptian stile ships are slow. Phoenicians have a super fast one.

- I couldn't build a keep in conquered provinces in the Geometric times. Is this for purpose? Why?

Depending on the faction ... The Northern factions just can't. The rest have to build a RoyalPalace3 or RoyalCourt3 to enable it

- Why is there not the possibility to build metalsmiths in provinces with iron (I gave all to get one in the first play, but all was in vain ).

Hmmm ... this might be a bug ... I wonted to put metal smiths in regions with Iron or Copper ... Apparently done it the wrong way I will try again

- Why did you not use "Slav warriors" for the Scythian warband? It would harmonize with the unit picture (which the "PlateS" unit appearance does not).

They are closer to the Skyths ...

- It's a bit strange when my general of the Thebian Sacred Band is blamed for his interest in boys

Sorry ... but that is the V&V system of the MTW ... Muslims were getting bad drinking habits

- I did not play the asian nations yet, but the Illyrians are a bit too weak, I think. It's not so easy to fight the Greeks, which is for sure historically correct. Maybe I'm to weak for the challenge.

Illirians are week but have rapid production and large numbers They also have fast units that can use in there mountains better than heavy infantry

- Profit from trade is huge, so you can get a fortune very easy. Income from agriculture should be favoured even more than in your first fix for this.

This has been addressed and fixed.

- Till now it has happened to often that the Persian king died without a heir. But maybe that was coincidence. Because everybody grabed the rebel provinces, the Persian had great difficulties to recover. But they should be the superpower in the game.

Yes I have given more power to the Eastern provinces.

Just tried out the mod, and I have to say it is superb, but I was wondering if there is a tech tree available. I'm not sure how to get some units, for example, the Macedonian phalangites (sp?). Any help is welcome http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif

You can build keeps in conquered provinces you have to build a couple of extra buildings but i cant remember the name. Stoa or astoria..its the building with 6 reds flag on it, and then you need to build the building you get after it too.

Is anyone else having trouble running normal VI after installing the mod? I have it in 2 different folders but on the same drive. I tried reinstalling VI but all i get is VI crashing.

Marco,
No you can't run VI or normal MTW after this mod is installed To get some of the units and the environment stuff in we overwrite some parts of the MTW/VI

jjwarrior,
Just wait for the final version it will come out soon and it will be all raped up in a nice ZIP file. You will still have to do some work (transform the map JPGs) but that is not much.

First of all, this mod is FANTASTIC It is easily better than the Viking expansion pack -which cost $35.

I have some questions;

1. the persion king seems to die without an hier. Is this on purpose?

2. The support cost of Slingers is REALLY high. As the human, i just don't build them unless i'm in some kind of emergancy and that is all that is avialable. However, the AI does build them, which has to hurt thier economy.

3. The support cost/cost of some other units seems a bit out of whack - just a thought.

It would be very cool to have a Rebel Faction bank territory, such as the Millenium mod has. They have it set up so that Africa is always rebel held (because it isn't attached to any other territory), and makes 100,000 florin per turn. The net effect is that the Rebels can build units and upgrade their territory. I think this would be a great addition to the Hellinic mod, since the rebels represent many small city states, which would put up a good fight.

Thanks again for a great mod.

Hi A_B,

I will check the Slingers ...
The rebel units have a huge support cost on purpose.
Rebel Faction bank territory is a nice idea ... I wonder how I can realise it ... but I will look in to it.

Please don´t play this Beta with LARGE or HUGE unit size in the options: You could get a CTD sometimes when you start a battle.

So use the DEFAULT unit size for the moment.

Hi all,

First lets start with something to excite you

The Yficratian Hoplites use a lighter type of armor a smaller shield and many times are referred to as Peltaste (Using a Pelti not a Hoplon). To compensate for there reduced armor Yficrates increased the size of their spears ~1.5 time resulting in a 4,5m pikes.

http://www.original21paris.com/timos/images/Yfic.jpg

The Macedonian Phalangites were the creation of Philip fother of Alexander. The initial idea was to hide troop movement behind a spear wall but the proved a lot more devastating in combat. As with the earlier Yficratian Hoplites the Phalangites had reduced armor and a smaller shield. The Pike “Sariza” was 6m in length with ballast at the end.

http://www.original21paris.com/timos/images/Maced.jpg

These two come with there Hellenistic counter parts. The difference is that the Hellenistic armies had developed a series of other troop types with a lot more mobility like Thorakites (similar to the Legionari) and so the Pike units became heavier.
Though only Sariza units were produced at this time I made a Late Athenian Yficratian Hoplite too.

========================================================

Since some things take more than expected time I decided to move in to Peloponnesian war, Rise of Macedon, Roman Conquest. The two basic units can be seen above. Unfortunately there is no Roman Legionari made for this period so I will use the one from the Praetorian mod with new shields. ... hopefully flip or DJ will make heavy sword unit for the Thorakites and Legionari.

To compensate for the massive Eastern armies and to give some edge to the barbarians and to the lightly equipped Eastern armies I have generated units with unit size > 100. This will be the case so have in mind that this mod should be used at normal. Also at this moment the Persian units have a base strength at ~120 men this might change to about ~160 – 180. This will result to a battlefield Greek army of 1536 men and for the Persians 2560 men. ... though this makes me wonder ... CA was talking about 10000 men battles ???? hmmm this might be with the 200men units, 16 unit armies (3200 men total / army) and 3 faction battle ???

Any way by the time I am ready with these ... flip will have the Dark age Hoplite ready for introduction. And DJ might have some other units.

Till then I will make generally available one more beta that will have all the fixes till now and more. A part of this “more” is a small mod with the introduction of the Trojan War units and the HTW map and material. This will be the base for the coming but still far Bronze Age HTW or Bronze Age TW using a new map ... this has to be decided after the final release of HTW.

Hi Appolo, Kalos irthes stin koinotita tou .ORG kai tou HTW.

The message you get means some thing is very wrong with the installation The Betta zip has to be extracted in the main MTW directory Actually this message comes when the campaign text files calls an invalid or a non-existing unit / building file so something is very wrong with the installation.

Just for those who need an installer ... I will pack the next pack in a self extracting file ... but you will still have to transform the MAP form JPG to TGA

BTW ... re filarako I see your frastration but you don’t need to post the same thing 3 times with a 2min interval ... we are fast But not that fast ;) ... hmmm now that I think of it the Greek origin HTW community is growing ... should we organize a get together???

You've mentioned size of armies I know from playing METW the one thing that spoils a battle is waiting for yor replacements to arrive, is there any way game code, engine allowing that when you've got an allie figthing the same battle that you can take command.
I haven't try it with the rebels using the cheat ".conan.",but in theory if you put two armies into the same state you will be in command of both, has any one try this and I've been missing out.
Again the pics look fantastic it will be interesting to see your stats regarding the lighter armour with longer pike Peltaste (Using a Pelti not a Hoplon). against more armour and shorter pike.

Hi flip.

Fantastic work
I will send you today a frame from the new Dark age / late Mycenaean. Better and more shield types and also spears (fixed the pike size though we might just need it).

Pls don't make an Achilles ... I know it would be Great having a Hero unit for this period where the Gods interact with humans ... but MTW does not treat the hero units well. I have some test to prove it. I would rather have the DA unit ready and then make an attempt to make the Thorakites / Early Legionary or some Eastern units.

Hi myces2000, welcome to the forum and our thread http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/smile.gif :

Here is the guide for installing this mod from our official HTW website:

Download these three files (links at the HTW-site):

Hellenic Total War v2.1 Beta
Small patch (for ships):
Startpos fix:

Installation:

1.Use a new installation of MTW+VI.

- Then unzipp the "Beta" into the new MTW main directory.
- Unzipp the "Small patch" into the same directory.
- Unzipp the "Startpos fix" to a folder outside of the new MTW installation (rename it to HTW if you want) and copy all three files of it into your "campmap/startpos"-folder.

2. Now open your "Textures/campmap/Hellenic" folder and convert the "mapTex.jpg" and "mapTex2.jpg" to TGA format.
Use "IrfanView" for that(link above)and put the two tga´s into the same folder.

If you don´t have the English version of MTW: Open your "Loc" folder:
After you have installed all three files (Beta, Small patch and Startpos-fix) from above you get a "Eng"-folder in this Loc-folder.
Open it and copy all files from it to your language folder: As an example from the "Eng"-folder to the "German"-folder.

Patch in case of "Turning to another year bug" (crash to desktop):

This is a patch against the turning to another year bug (CTD) for HTW v2.1 Beta
This patch can protect your HTW version against the CTD bug.

BUT please, don´t install it, if you don´t have the turning to another year problem
If you had CTD´s (crash to desktops, when you turned to another year) then install this patch to
protect your NEW campaigns against the same problem.
But only then, install it, please

Installation of the CTD patch:
Copy the "Medieval.Cfg"-file into your HTW main directory.
It protects your HTW against the CTD bug if you beginn a new campaign, but I doupt that it could heal
a damaged save-game, but try it.
You can get it with this link:

CTD-patch:http://max45.250free.com/HTW-beta_patch2.zip(Link above)

Tip:set unit size on default so don’t play this mod on large or huge settings

Now it should work.
The HTW-team

And print this guide out, so that you can read it while the installation.
Also download "Irfan View" (a image viewer) to convert the two jps (read the guide).

greetings:

Antalis

CA meant that, on a 8 player LAN MP game or 8 faction custom battle, with huge unit size.

In SP Campaign, the max army size for Normal it's 960 men. For Huge unit size, it's 1920.

For LAN MP games or custom battles, the max army size for Normal it's 1600 men. For Huge unit size, it's 3200.

Therefore, the MAX for an 8 player LAN MP game or 8 faction custom battle, it's:

8*3200 = 25600 men (I know, because I've tryed it http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wink2.gif Veeeeeerrrrryyyyyyy SLOW http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-sleep.gif )

For SP Campaign, without allies, it's only 2*1920 = 3840 men http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-cry.gif

Hi all,

Anatalis,
Yes I started with the monetary change ... but apparently there are more files there. Thanks LoS. The new currency will be “Gold Coins” or GC.

Here is a good question ... where are the Starting formation names???? LoS any ideas.

Flip,
Those are the Octaspis. It was abandoned by the time they had armor for protection and the Boeotean was used ... try shield number 1 this is of the intermediate period and I use it for the Myrmidons too.

Bellerophon,

Yes, I will have a "starting" part of a Bronze Age HTW in the new Beta. All its units are usable with Trojan war mod but don't use them together ... I will update it too to the new standard.

In the new beta (HTW v.2.1-Beta-3) there are going to be the following periods.
1. Bronze Age - for testing and feed back on units
First Triplet - 99% ready
2. Geometric
3. Proclassical
4. Classical
Second Triplet - 70% ready
5. Peloponnesian War
6. Rise of Macedon
7. Roman Conquest

Hopefully if I get some time V.3 will come as an update. It will introduce a new map with 99 (the max) provinces

I listed all the files I changed did you find something else? the only bits I did not bother with were in respect to Multiplayer, otherwise the changes I did are global in that they show on the campmap, in unit, building parchments and on custom battle screens, please let me know if I indeed have missed something, other then that it is working fine for me?
as to your question re:Formation Names I found this in Loc/Eng/Battle

//******************************************************

I´ve noticed, that in the descriptions of the factions in the choosing of a faction before the campaign begins, the old MTW and Viking Invasion descriptions are.
So the Macedonians have the description of the irish faction and so on.

It would be good to change this, kom or maybe Rosacrux?

Hi all,

Well I found out that we are a sticky now and ask LoS to change the name of the thread too, HTW-Hellenic Total War Mod is a lot better than the original one.

Thanks LoS.

Some update first.
Didn't have the time I expected to have but three new units are tested and working
1. Gastraphetes
2. Lithovolos
3. Boeotean Machine

These are all raillery or better Antipersonnel weapons. 1 and 2 come at High and Late age and 3 at Early and it is only available to Boeoteans

1. Is a primitive crossbow but much heavier and bigger. The user supports it on his belly and thus the name. It was capable of inflicting damage even to heavy Infantry units. Initially built by Dionisos Dictator of Syracuse and used against the Cartesians it was quickly adopted throughout the Hellenic world. This is the first "Katapeltis" (Catapult) meaning it could be used against shield bearing troops. The name actually means against shield (kata peltis).

2. This is a stone tougher developed after the Gastraphetes. It is bigger than Gastraphetis and it needs a support. This is a very capable weapon and can cause considerable damage to any approaching unit.

3. This was first mentioned in Thukithithis. The Boeoteans used some type of flame tougher device to destroy some fortifications. It is a portable unit carried by a hoplite in to battle but it is not a long range weapon. The substance it was of acidic nature and set to fire could toast anything that came in contact with.

All these are emulated by simple infantry units. I am still searching for the best way to emulate them (in numbers) At the moment Gastraphetes has 32, Lithovolos but only 8 of them can fire (or I hope so) and Boeotean Machine has 8.

The problem with Boeotean Machine is that I wonted to have the boiling oil as a missile type weapon but still used the grenade that will do for the moment.
BTW ... Gastraphetes and Lithovolos for the moment use normal units ... till now http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif

Here are some MapImages (previewimages) of two different castles with different upgrades. You´ll find for every map such images.
For every castle exsists 9 upgrades, so 10 different castles.

Now that i see these nice castle pictures reminds me of something i noticed with the mod when assaulting forts. I find that the archery towers or whatever it is that fires arrows have an amazing reach/range and however far back i place my army the arrows always reach them. I hope someone looks into this as assaulting forts isnt much fun as I have to hide most my army and send in my units one at a time to minimise damage. (On a positive note - I always try and kill and take everyone prisoner when I know there is a fort in the province. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif ) Also some forts are unfallable due to siege, what is the criteria for this please?

Mummer
01-19-2004, 03:40
I know the larger the fort, the longer it takes to siege, and the smaller the garrison, the longer they will hold out... more food to go around, I would assume.

Antalis::
01-19-2004, 08:36
Its because some of the arrowtowers are on a hill (the acroplolis), so theire range is wider.

Problem is that the arrowtowers on the foot of the hill would also be affected in makeing them lesser range, and they will shot then not very wide.

Best would be to place your troops a bit more away from the castle in the deployment and only your attacking units in front near the castles. That should work, if you place them far eway in the beginning of a battle.

If its a small castle-map (but there are I guess only 1) then attack as quick as possible.

@flip or kom:

I know we talked about chariots: Someone in the totalwar.com forum asked me, if there will be chariots for the Bronce Age.
So will they be developed?

komninos
01-19-2004, 13:30
Hi Anatlis,

The answer her is we have to
I would like to be the first to fully incorporate a chariot in the TW and flip I think will find it very challenging to do so. I have also contacted the Lords about it and I have received some interest from them too. Now there is not definite date for its appearance but it is planed in all other aspects. So design work has to me done. The other problem is that TW engine does not support something like chariot but it works nice as I have tried to do it ... you will see chariot units in the Bronze Age HTW and there are in Trojan war mod.

So YES ... but when it is something we have not yet set.

Hi flip,

I have ... finally got my mail at home. I have seen your unit and it is very nice I will try to get it back to you with the shields and all the space you need. I also have an idea. To make one of the shield images the inner part of the shield. Those when viewed behind the hoplite the inner shield will be viewed. The hoplites will have both bat for the frames the inner part is seen the outer part will be shrinked to a single pixel.

I have also used the new bif reader ... though it does not produce some of the conditions i.e. I see the charge but not the stand it is very nice ... rebuilt the walk function very nicely. The good thing with the hoplites is you have to make the coordinates only once for all of them ;)

Hi,

I downloaded this Mod, and I've followed the install instructions. I get into the game, chose New Campaign, then the first of the New Era's (sorry I can't remember the name). I choose a faction and it goes to the loading screen, but I get an error message.

Initmainmap
Unknown error (0) (00000000)

From there if I press escape I get to the pause menu, but if I press resume game it crashes completely.

Any suggestions on how to fix this please? I'm really looking forward to playing this Mod, so any help to get it to run would really be appreciated.

Thanks

You havn´t installed the campaignmap right: I guess you havn´t used Irfan View for converting the jpgs into tga.
You have used another graphic software for converting, right? But not every graphic software can convert it correct.
Thats the reason, why we say, that everyone should use Irfan View.

First, I cant open the game from the MTW-VI shortcut on my desktop, so I have to use the basic MTW icon within the program files. Secondly, when I do rum the program, I get the message- "Unknown faction specified: column 20, row 8 EGYPTIAN" I have no clue what this means other than it wont let me start the game. Thank you for taking the time to fix the shield and weapon positions It was my only complaint, that I didn't bother complaining about since I can deal with it, but with that fixed, this Mod won't seem like a Mod at all, but like a completely new game You guys are doing a great job, and I hope this mod wins some sort of award, or a mention in a really big PC magazine, or something

Are you sure, that you have installed the "startpos fix" to the right place?

You get with it 3 files: "Hellenic_DA, Hellenic_PCL, Hellenic_CL": Put them into your "campmap/startpos"-folder.

Than this error should not be there anymore.

You can download it here WePM (http://mapage.noos.fr/metw/WePM.zip)

It is provided as it is with no documentation. In effect it works just as SPM but with weapon coordinates. If you need info on how weapon coordinates work there is a guide in this forum which explains it all.

I hope this will help.

Hi all,

It has been a hell week ... so sorry for not getting back to you all but I barely had time to sleep. And for what things look we will continue on the same pace till the elections :( and then I know that most of this work will be canceled by the government and all will be in vain http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-wall.gif

Any way,
There is a new update coming soon ... it will have less trouble in the installation since much of the stuff that caused the problems are cleared. Though you might still need the CTD patch since I can’t understand why this happens. It will have three new periods in it for you to try Bronze Age HTW, Peloponnesian war, Rise of Macedon.
I will try to put in the Roman Conquest that closes the triplet of the later periods but I will need some major changes and still causes some CTDs due to the small number of factions plus new shields will be needed too.

Flip,
Nice pics ... though I have been working to get the coordinates for DJs unit bifs. Till now I have done the Walk / Run. Charge and Standing will not be that difficult to do but fighting and dieing will take some time. Once the DJs Hoplite is OK I will have to do the Peltast with crescent and elliptical shield and then the two cavalry units. I still have not worked with the unit BIF you sent me but I plan on doing it this week end. I will produce two units out of it one for Dark age / Geometrical and one for Mycenaean and late Mycenaean.

Antalis,
I will get your final maps this weekend so if you have any additions / fixes to make just be sure they get in. One more thing for the mountain maps, Greek mountains don’t have nice slopes but they make gorges and in general no army can fight in them.
So mountain battles took places either in a small flat land or mountain passes. These are small passes that can be guarded by very few men. Battles in these passages are more or less like MTW river battles. High cliffs are all around and they lead you to a small passage 2 or 3 units wide. Something like that might be nice to include.
Liked you mountain river maps.
I have also seen that you are the initiator of a number of threads all around spreading the HTW mod. Great work. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-2thumbsup.gif

Zimoa,
I will try to get the units ready for you. They will not move but rather stand. I will expand the existing description too. Just one thing give me some time with them things have stopped for a week now and I spent all weekend at work so all went to a halt. The good news is that the new bif reader is excellent so shield / weapon placement will not take much time ~ a days work per unit. This means that by the end of the weekend I might have all hoplites and Peltast units ready.

To all who have problems with installation,
It is always better to start at a fresh directory, just make a copy of your MTW dir in to Ancient-TW or HTW nice all the things that will come out of my work will be from 2000BC till the Romans and will be compatible.
Do not dump the files in the directory or try to do it your self There are ~3000 files in the ZIP and it takes me ~3houres to make the thing. Use the extract command then choose all files and your new MTW dir.
When that is done use ACDSee or IrfanView to change the JPGs images of the map to TGAs DO NOT USE PSP FOR THE CONVERSION
Then apply the patches you can find from Antalis and Sir Moody. Remember this is still a beta (as all or most mods so patches are a must).
Finally play at Normal size cause units are >100 and some times close to 200.
You will have to forgive me for being “Non user friendly” my first computer is nearly 20 years old 8bit ZX Spectrum based on Z80. So I can’t get in your boots that easily.

Cheers

For the moment no. But there is at least one roman unit that komninos asked. I'gonna build a new site where I'll put new units and other graphics. Hi all,

I have finely managed to get all the Hoplites shields and weapons ready so now they don’t have floating stuff around them http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
The good news is that some of the stuff made for hoplites work with the light (Peltast type) units so they will be easily made. I will fix the Polemiste unit too that use a sword
I will then go and patch up the work done till now for the new triplet so you can have that least the Peloponnesian War and Rise of Macedon campaigns.

Filp,
Yes ... I agree though these units BIFs have to be in sync I will try to get the stuff I promised you ... this weekend
BTW. Since your Dark Age units follow that little picture I sent you some time ago ... they are more of a "Royal" type of unit ... can you give them a more modest plum http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/rolleyes.gif please. We can use these for Myrmidons or some high units of the late Bronze Age.

Antalis,
The problem with the overwhelming light horse units is being addressed hopefully we will find a solution to it ... same thing happens with the Thessalians and Macedonians in Dark Age.

Rosacrux,
Nice to see you around ... it would be great if we could have those descriptions.

BTW.
Is there anyone that would like to deal with the animations?? His work will be to put all the weapons in the right place for the units. It is a really hectic thing so think about it. I would like to lighten up flip from this so he can get the BIFs we need. From my experience with the new tool it takes you about 2 – 3 days to get one unit done The good news is that there is a lot of reusability here ... ie all hoplite units use the same coordinates. The good part will be that you will get to see the results fast.

I've successfully installed HTW (It looks marvellous. However, when I get to the installation of the "startpos fix", it all becomes greek to me (pardon my pun). The result is that I choose to play as Athens and my opening position is the Italian penninsula and I have ships on dry land, etc. I have copied all three files to the"campaign startpos" folder.........then I am stuck. I can't even find "textures/campaign/hellenic" and I haven't a clue as how to convert "mapTex.jpg" and Tex2.jpg to TGA format. I don't even know what you mean. I installed IrFanview but haven't got a clue as how to use it.
Could someone take me by the hand and walk with me? I have WinXP.

Antalis::
01-31-2004, 16:29
No problem:

Go into your HTW maindirectory: Open the "Textures" - folder, than open in in this folder the "campmap" folder, than in it the "Hellenic" folder.

In this Hellenic folder are two images in jpg-format.You must convert them with IrfanView to TGA-format:
Open the "MapTex.jpg" with IrfanView and go there to the "File" section, choose there "save as" and choose than there "TGA - Truevision Targa".
Now use as installations path (where your tga than is) the same folder (Textures/campmap/Hellenic-folder) and save it.

Make the same with "MapTex2".

Have you thought about making a later peltast also? I'm assuming one of you has the book "Warfare in the Classical World." since several of the illustrations in this book are in the game, and the book describes Peltasts around the time of Alexander as having:

-Reasonable helmets.
-A longer spear along with his javelins to enable him to better defend himself.
-Some body armor.
-A larger oval shield, that could be made of hide-covered wood.

The peltasts seem to be heavier, but a more able group of light infantry. I don't really even want to see them in the game, I'm just throwing some suggestions out there.

I guess you meant unit icons with portraits, right?

It has definitly nothing to do with missing unit icons in the preview-screen of a historical battle (had that several times, don´t know why this happens).

I guess you have written an unit-name wrong (one letter is enough).

Use the gnome editor and check, if every unit is spelled right.

Or you have given to many men to the units (I guess 200? is the limit).

btw: kom:

Can you send me the macedonian units (also the unitprod), so that I can work on, on the historical battles?
