Hi everybody,
After years being around these forums, I have finally decided to take active part.
I am a thorough campaign player of the Total War series, both STW, MTW/VI, RTW/BI and now M2TW/Kingdoms. I must confess that my old time favourite is MTW/VI and none of the new "official" games get close to it. I am also a very dedicated (let's say that) MOD player, out of which Europa Barbarorum has got me addicted for a long time.
As for online play, I have never done it, and I really do not want to try. If I am so hook now, I do not want to imaging getting mixed up in multiplayer action.
Cheers everybody!

Thanks for the info Omanes Alexandrapolites,
Now I have my hands full with M2TW, and there is an issue with my graphic card (GTS8800) to play MTW. Besides, plenty of work to be done in the coming weeks, so it will have to wait a bit.

Hello Everyone,
I was a member of the Guild a while back and played RTW religiously for a couple of years. Then I had an eye operation :dizzy2: and had to stop; but now I am back and once again wasting days and weeks fighting as Carthage against the might of Rome - when I should be working  . I am back playing on VH/VH but I don't remember losing as many campaigns as this in the past :skull: (?). I played the Seleucid Empire this week and my backside still bears the camel hoof print! Guess I must be a bit rusty!
Best wishes everyone!

Hello Joh,
Several people encountered issues with the 8800 cards and STW/MTW.
The problem is selecting and moving units in battles? I've once seen a post about fixing it, but not really details. None of the other 8800 owners managed to fix it.
The 8800's seem to be very nice cards in other games.

12-03-2007, 21:46
Hello everyone,
I'm sharpshooter (from a love of arbalesters) - an old bloke in London UK with an interest in history and a passionate gamer. I started playing the series with Shogun, and I've done them all through to MTW2. I have to say MTW VI remains my true love.
I'm currently playing MTW VI Vanilla.
I've been an irregular visitor to the forum all the way, but just joined here recently. I'm a member over at the .com too. I have a big list of unanswered questions about MTW VI, and a particular take on how the AI wants the game to be played (minimilist, in a word). I know there's lots of knowledge and experience here - and doubtless plenty of opinions.
I guess you won't be surprised to know I've got plenty of opinions myself.
Thanks to all the people who put the time and effort into making this a thriving community. This is much appreciated.
A special thanks to BKB, who's excellent Supermod refreshed and revitalised the game for me a while back. I'm looking forward to trying out the XL mod too, about which I read enthusiastic remarks.

Hello Guys!
This is my first post!:laugh4:
I'm new on this forum, so I'll introduce myself:
I'm from Brazil, so any posts in portuguese(if there are any) I'm going to understand.
I use play RTW Vanilla, and I am big fan of all Total War series(can't wait to see Empire: TW). Just recently I got interested in the modding community and I'm trying to learn something using my avarage knowledge about programming. So far The Guild is being VERY useful for me.
Also: I'm a portuguese-english translator, so if someone need some help, just ask me. I study world history as a hobby, so I can help on that too.

Hi TosaInu,
I was focusing on some other forums and missed this.
Yeah, it is kind of that, but also that units do not seem to be smoothed in any way, just a bunch of large squares. Very visual unfriendly.
Anyway, my old computer is more than able to manage MTW but I must admit that I am beginning to get addicted to M2TW. And it is not the first time, I also think that MTW is/was better than RTW, but once I started with RTW, it turned out to be very difficult to let it go. My mind keeps on telling me that MTW is the best of the series (and indeed it is), but I find myself resisting to go back.
I have also surfed trying to solve the problem, but it does not seem to be that simple. If I ever find something out, I will try to post it as well.

Greets to all from a nube. (sorta)
I have been playing TW games for two years now and have tried during that time to get answers, do mods, develope friends and in general enjoy the fuller gaming experience of TW. But I must confess, I have never been to a gamers site which was less friendly, less willing to share info and help a new comer, or less unwilling to even direct a guy to somewhere where he can find info, help with mod questions, or generally get to know his way around.
Perhaps I have been away from gaming too long? I started in the PC game world back in '94 playing Crusader WW2 etc. Now a days this gaming world seems a very cold and self centered place. Maybe that's why I always seem to return to playing whatever mod I find best and sticking to single player. Too many hours spent trying to do mods and getting NO help, and too many hours trying to locate how to's for MP play and ...well, I have said enough.
I do not want to add "too many hours of complaining" to my too many hours list. I will stick to listening to my wife complaining that I spend too many hours playing this game! She has no idea how great the TW series is, and that's fine too.

Thanks Martok and Mithrandir. My computer should be fixed in a few days now, but it has been a few months now....
Im getting the TW eras set for christmas and would appriciate peoples opinions, which should I play first? As ive said Ive already played shogun and M2TW (and M2TWs expansion pack) but I havnt touched the other games nor have I ever played shogun with its expansion. So, Shogun (with expansion) Rome, or Plain Medievil TW? Also are there any mods which I should check out? I dont like the mods to change to much stuff (no elves or stormtroopers please XD) I prefer to try out mods that add to the whole experience of the Grand Campaigns, for reference Ill prolly be trying out the long road mod, as well as the Lands to Conquer mods for M2TW, but ive no ideas about the other games. Just a few names would be helpful.
I think thats all for now, Im off to try and figure out where to get some camels for bribary purposes....... theres a safari park down the road from here, maybe they have some...... *wonders off muttering about lockpicks, crowbars wondering what camels eat anyway*

Welcome Tillan :ave:
I suggest you try RTW vanilla and then the BI expansion without mods. Then install EB for RTW to experience what that RTW, which you will just have seen would be should its potential have been fully realized. It's designed for vanilla 1.5 but there are user re-modifications to make it compatible with BI or Alexander. For BI itself there's Invasio Barbarorum with similar intents yet much less depth, Pike and Musket for RTW/BI and quite a few others.
Try also MTW with VI installed; all campaigns or at least Early and Vikings before installing any mods. As for mods, choices are many, most popular ones being XL, BKB Supermod and Pocket Mod, as well as Pike and Musket (for the post-Renaissance era), Hellenic TW (Ancient Greece), Napoleonic Mod, Samurai Warlords and many more...
You may check the hosted mods and mod download sections for MTW and RTW for yourself. Concerning MiNO, I won't comment...

My personal thoughts:
STW: If you no longer have your original copy of Shogun, then I would by all means recommend trying it out again. The Mongol Invasion expansion obviously adds the Mongol Campaign, as well as several new starting dates for the main Sengoku Jidai campaign. The expansion also halves the build times & costs for structures, which is nice as it allows for a somewhat faster start.
I'll be honest, though: If you still have your original copy of Shogun, I would just stick with playing that, and not bother installing the Eras version (since it includes the MI expasion pack). Not that Mongol Invasion is bad per se, but it doesn't really add enough to the original game to justify as a separate expansion. In addition, the new Mongol campaign isn't really that great -- it's too easy to win as the Hojo, and too much of a pain playing as the Mongols.
All that said, STW/MI is still a blast to play, and remains one of my favorite games of all time. I've yet to play any other title that has as much atmosphere as this one, it's fairly well-balanced, and the AI remains among the best I've ever seen in a strategy game. So if you don't have your first copy of Shogun anymore, you should definitely give it a go. :2thumbsup:
MTW: My personal favorite out of the entire series! With all the different factions to play, all the religous aspects of the game (Crusades, Jihads, Inquisitions, etc.), and all the dynastic maneuvering going on (royal marriages, civil wars, and the like), the game has a high replayability factor. The atmosphere, balance, and AI aren't quite as good as it is in Shogun, but are still fairly excellent overall.
Medieval's replayability is further enhanced by all the many excellent mods available for it. Whether you're looking for a mod that expands on the main game (BKB, XL, & Pocket Mod, to name only a few), or a mod that changes the game's setting entirely (Pike & Musket, Hellenic TW, Samurai Warlords, etc.), you're almost guaranteed to find something suited to your tastes.
Finally: MTW has camels. Need I say more? ~;)
RTW: I don't care for Rome; never have. I love the setting (who wouldn't?!), but the computer-controlled factions are so bloody awful -- on both the strategic and tactical level -- that I simply can't stand playing it. Between the limp AI and overly-bright (albeit pretty) graphics, the game has almost a cartoonish feel for me. Both the EB & RTR mods (which are far & away two of the most popular for RTW) have supposedly improved the vanilla game a great deal, but they still can't do anything about the AI. IMHO, it's the most "gamey"-feeling of all the the TW titles (which is not a good thing).
M2TW: Not bad, but not great either. It largely feels like a MTW mod of Rome (although admittedly that's not necessarily a bad thing). It's got a lot of the same problems as RTW, though, which is a strike against it. The AI has been improved somewhat over Rome, but that's admittedly not saying much. I've not played any of the mods for it, so no recommendation there.
Hi, All! I,m an old geezer from the deep forests of Southern Sweden who has been playing Total Wars almost from the beginning. The reason i decided to join this community was that i discovered that someone was going to make a Mod of the Great Northern War, and because i in the past was an almost fanatical history buff regarding this period, i just had to make some comments and maybee stop the modders from "putting their feet in their mouths" ;-), at least regarding Swedish Uniforms and tactics.

Have been playing since Shogun days...though have to admit to being a complete MTW2 junkie these days. Am using dial up so have not ventured too far into the world of 'mods'. However, one successful foray onto these boards did produce the discovery that was 'Lands to Conquer'. Been playing it ever since! Thanks for the advise Mouzafphaerre and Martok, exactly what I was looking for. I think ill probably start off with Rome Vanilla and check it out, if i like it ill install the exansions/mods. If not ill move onto MTW and do the same.
I do still have the original shogun game, and have been playing that recently on a lesser spec'ed machine that couldnt take M2TW, so ill leave MI for last on my list of things to check. Incedently i just got my normal computer running again, have to install the O/S (in my case dual boot Ubuntu and Sabayon Linux, maybe XP depending upon how well I can get these games to run under Wine/VMware) but that should be done by end of the weekend :couch:

Incedently i just got my normal computer running again, have to install the O/S (in my case dual boot Ubuntu and Sabayon Linux, maybe XP depending upon how well I can get these games to run under Wine/VMware) but that should be done by end of the weekend :couch:
Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!
You're welcome, mate. And congrats on getting your PC back up and running! :2thumbsup:
Thanks Mouzafphaerre for your welcome and words of advice. Have decided to play a little Rome TW whilst waiting for Kingdoms and have begun to download EB....have to do it at work as no home internet connection where I am....day two of the download....65% complete. How the other half live eh! :dizzy2: Cheers.
 Where are my manners...not to mention reading skills? Should have extended my thanks to you too Martok. Apologies.
No worries, mate. I took no offense whatsoever.

Hello everybody,
My name is Christian and i'm a philosophy student from the currently very misty Denmark.
I've been playing tw-games since Medieval I, these days I mainly play Rome with the Europa Barbarorum mod. I tried Medieval II, but all those drab peasants and all-metal knights, not to mention the "variety" in actual troop types just couldn't hold my attention. Didn't take me long to get back to the rich and colourful 272 BC Aegean and environs. :2thumbsup:
I suppose I will mainly be seen around the EB subforum, for obvious reasons, but I might very well take a look at some of the other mods around too.
Merry christmas, happy holidays, "glædelig jul!" or whatever your flavour may be. Or just have a nice day.

OMG, new workers for the Stables!
Welcome all.
I will add something for RTW and mods:
Just play RTW Vanilla Balance Mod(with version 1.5)

hey ive been a reader/junior member of this forum for a while now and have loved it. anyways ive had MTW2 for a while now and its a great game. i just got kingdoms and have had a mess of a time trying to install it. first i install it and the battles dont work bc apparently i didnt have .NET 3.0 so i got that along with its service pack 1 and uninstalled and reinstalled the games and still had the problem that battles didnt work. i reuninstalled it and went and manually deleted alot of things and erased the folder. reinstalled it and then when i installed the kingdoms expansion, the game would say cant find voice1.bat while upgrading my version to 1.02 and crash my install. and now i cant even play the regular game without it crashing upon startup. so any help of what to do now that i reuninstalled and installed the game awithout loading the new expansion just the vanilla. i read on some pages here to mess with the registry and remove the voice1.bat from it but i dont know what that means and the thread wasnt followed up bc the person with the question got it fixed. any help would be appreciated thanks.
Hi Archungel
Which version of windows are you using? Though I hear that M2TW works great on vista and most of the fixes are the same on each O/S (Vista and XP) its worth us knowing before we offer advise.
How does it crash when you start it? Does it just go to a blue screen of death? does an error pop up? Does it just not start? Does it freeze? Please be as detailed as possible. Again, helping us help you ^_^
Aside from that I was under the impression the game included the .Net framework it needed, and would install it if you didnt have it, could be wriong about that though. Where did you get the .Net 3.0 from? Which version did you install, a direct link might be useful. The problem sounds like it *could* have something to do with that.

so i have XP pro and and when i start the game it turns black as if to load it and then just crashes bc it has "encountered an unspecific error" and goes back to my main windows screen. i got the .NET 3.0 from the www.windowsupdate.com website. i installed the version 3.0 bc i read in the readme file that XP needs it and from other threads i had read for help. i had previously loaded v1.01 before i installed kingdoms for the first time and was able to successfully upgrade to v1.02 and play the game until i battled.(however it couldnt find the voice1.bat while trying to install v1.03 and crashed the install, oddly enough i was able to play the game with limited crashing) that was when i went and erased it and reloaded it. and now i cant get past the point of loading the game to play it without it encountering an error

Good advise ^_^
It sounds like a comparatively simple software problem, maybe a corrupted installation (though as youve reinstalled it twice, maybe not) maybe a problem with .net like ive said.
Ild try uninstalling both, removing all files/folders and (if you feel confident enough and can get the information) all registry settings. Reboot, install the .net framework (using windows update if possible) and then install the game. But to be honest Im not certain if that would help, and your liable to get a good answer in the Apothecary, after all thats what that forum is for.

For now I have just two question. On some screenshots I saw that one unit have two times more soldiers than mine. For example 150 instead of 75.How can I fix it?
Second:can I somehow change game time so my turn is not two years. It is so fast, and I would want it to be about one.Can I change it ?

Welcome to the .Org Longbowman ~
For now I have just two question. On some screenshots I saw that one unit have two times more soldiers than mine. For example 150 instead of 75.How can I fix it?You can change unit size in the "Options" menu which you can select when you land at the opening screen.
Once you have entered the "Options" menu, select "Video Options".
Simply select the "Advanced Options" check-box, and change the "Unit Scale" settings to your personal preferences. I think that 150 men in a unit will probably be the "Huge" setting.
Bear in mind that this modification will not change anything in your existing campaigns - it will only apply to any new ones started. Also bear in mind that upping this setting increases population drain from cities when units are trained. This can be problematic when trying to encourage city to growth.
On the technical side of things, this may also decrease performance on lower spec computers. If this is the case, and you still wish to play on a larger unit size, then lowering the quality of other settings on the "Video Options" menu should negate the problem slightly.
Second:can I somehow change game time so my turn is not two years. It is so fast, and I would want it to be about one.Can I change it ?Yep, it's possible.
If you are running Windows Vista you first need to turn off a certain security feature - User Account Control (UAC). It is designed to stop hackers/viruses editing the Program Files area, but, in the process of doing this, it prevents any user from doing so either. If you are running Windows XP or any other OS then this isn't necessary.
To turn the feature off, first navigate to the start menu. In the "Start Search" box, type "Control Panel".
The next steps depend upon whether you have the classic view, or the modern view enabled.
Should you be utilising the classic view, simply select "User Accounts" from the menu.
Should you be using the modern view, select "User Accounts and Family Safety". From there, click on "User Accounts".
Once you are into the area, select "Turn User Account Control On or Off".
You will then be asked for permission to continue. Either enter the correct administrator password, or simply click continue to move onwards.
From there, it is nice and easy. Quite simply de-check the check-box on the screen, and click "Ok".
After that, restart your computer, and then continue. With UAC turned off, the file can now be edited.
Once you've completed the edit, it is advised that you turn User Account Control back on. This should allow a higher level of security for your system and ensure that you are less vulnerable to certain threats.
Next you need to find your "descr_strat.txt" file. Typically this can be found in:
"C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval II Total War\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign"
If you installed the game in a custom directory, then you may have to search for the file manually.
Right click on the file, select "Properties" and then ensure that the tick box marked "Read-only" isn't checked. If it is, de-check it.
Once you've done that, click "Ok" and open up the file.
Then find the line which contains the word "timescale 2.0".
Change the "2.0" to the number of years you wish each turn to be. "1.0" is one year per turn, "0.5" is half a year per turn while "0.25" is a quarter of a year per turn.
Good luck Longbowman ~:)

Hello Everyone,
Unfortunately I only now realize I never introduced myself. Please forgive my oversight. My only excuse is that I’ve been away from the Total War Games for about one year and a half. Now I’m back. When I joined this forum in 2005 I was searching for a decent guide to RTW and I finally found what I needed in frogbeastegg’s work. I like MTW too, but I definitely prefer to dominate the world as a consul of the Roman Republic. I live in Tuscany, Italy, about 80 km (50 miles) away from the city of Arezzo (Roman Arretium, the capital of the Julii). I’m glad to be a part of such an active community and eager to learn and explore the most audacious techniques of ancient warfare with all of you. :charge:

Hello again, everyone.
Which TW games do you play?
At the moment, I play Rome. Prompted by a friend's interest in Medieval II,
I got the eras collection in the summer and started with Shogun. I skipped Medieval for the time being, but I plan to go into it after I will have become more familiar with Rome. Given limited gaming time, a glacier-like style of playing single games and a strong interest in Civilization and, more recently, Europa Universalis, I am not in a hurry to get Medieval II which I could probably not run in all its glory anyway.

Hey,y'all! I've been a member since Aug '07,but didn't post my introduction until now (it took me awhile to actually figure out the ropes).
Been an ancient Greece nut since playing God of War, discovered R:TW on YouTube and bought it, just recently got Total War Eras (and learned never to play a sequal before an original, but Medieval and Shogun are still great), and my idols are Alexander III of Macedonia and Leonidas I of Sparta (which is probably obvious by my username). Oh, and I'm honored by the warm welcome you all showed this novice Total Warrior. Battle tactics, strategies, and campaign advice found here helped me lead the Julii to victory in my first imperial campaign. Thanks a million, guys and gals.

Greetings to all!
As a new member I have searched this site many times to understand some of the problems with RTW,RTR and MTWII. I have been War Gaming for many years (started in the Mid 60s) with Board Games, Minitures, Role-Playing and now Computer Games. I am a History buff all my life and have been working on my Masters Degree on and off. My Favorite period is Ancient history, specifically Rome. RTW was a God Send for for me. To finally get to see how a Manipular Legion worked was awsome!!! In MTWII Castile was able to secure ALL of Spain to include Portugul and then conquer North Africa. With the Reconquesta completed by approx. 1400 A.D. Spain sent expeditions to the New World.
Which brings me to MTWII Kingdoms....Cortez is well on his way in securing Southern Mexico from the Aztecs while a second expedition is beseiging the Mayan capital of Chiken Itza!
As you can see I love these games! So, again Greetings to all

Hello everyone,
I'm mitch and I'm part of a small and inexperienced mod team - 3 of us so far, and we're all big fans of both the Total War games, and the old 8 bit classic Lords of Midnight
so, naturally we have started work on a LoM mod for RomeTW, discussion started in October 07, and work started in November, and then it all stopped for christmas, but now we're back! - and we need as much help and guidance as we can get, hence my appearance here :)

Welcome to the Org mitch23.
you can ask questions and find useful information in ModdingQuestions (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=73) sub-forum, as well as search tutorials in the Scriptorium (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=77)
thanks for the warm welcome people, i intend to make good use of all the help and experience you have available
question: shall I create a thread for our mod on the RTW Forge section straightaway, or do i need to 'prove myself' first?
Of coz you can, though better to ask questions separately and make thread once you've made at least half of work I think. Maybe you will recruit somebody though with thread..

question: shall I create a thread for our mod on the RTW Forge section straightaway, or do i need to 'prove myself' first?Feel free! As Charge has said, the creation of mod threads requires nothing beyond a modification whose development has begun/will be beginning soon.

Hello to all,
I have owned and played to death all of the TW series since Shogan.
I started Modding with RTW, starting with the odd tweak here and there and with the excellant tutorials provided in this forum worked my way upto modding RTW to become my "ideal" version including ZoR and new units.
I am also a massive fan of the old Spectrum game Lords of Midnight and recently joined a site with an online multiplayer version of the game.
Following a random discussion me and 2 friends (1 of which has already signed on here, hello Mitch23) have decided to "combine" the 2 games and are now creating Midnight:TotalWar based on the RTW engine.
