Hey everyone, I'm a long time reader of the Guild's forums, and now a poster too I guess! ^^
My signature pretty much says it all for me. I'm a casual player and I only have a laptop PC, so I can't have M2TW and Kingdoms installed at all times.
I'm now loaded up once more and I'm gonna try to complete 2 or 3 long campaigns or several shorts before the end of 2008, I think.

Being promoted to full member isn't dependent on post count -- rather, it's the *quality* of the posts you make. As a general rule, most folks get promoted to full membership in 2-3 weeks. ~:)

Can you run forever? The geisha is a woman who can get any man she wants.

I don't use them myself because it's just too easy to wipe out the other factions this way. And because the building prerequisites are a bit on the high side (which they should be, for such an overpowered unit).

I'd be hoping that if I left Japan she would forget about me. :laugh4: The Japanse are notoriously isolationist after all.

I also never built geisha. They were an unbeatable weapon in what was otherwise a very balanced game. Winning through assasination always felt like a 'cheap' way to win, I prefer my victories to be earned on the bloody (as in covered in blood) field of battle!

I agree that geishas are indeed overpowered in STW. I do usually train a few of them, but only as a defensive deterrent against enemy geishas. I never use them as "offensive" assassins anymore; they're just too easy.

I remember the very first time I ever advanced far enough to get geisha. I went overboard and assassinated everything in sight. Before I knew it half of Japan was in my control and the other half was controlled by ronin. :laugh4:

The Org/Guild is one of the oldest -- if not *the* oldest -- unofficial Total War website still operating. It's been around since at least 1999 (possibly even 1998? I forget now). Suffice it to say, we've been around a lot longer than TWC has. ~;)

There really is no fundamental difference between what TWC and the Guild are about - both aim to nurture high quality discussion relating to TW games overall. The real difference, however, is how they are run. TWC is more of a democracy, the .Org is more of a, well, dictatorship. I don't know quite how it works, but I understand that members have an awful lot of input in how things are run and have "constitutional rights" and stuff like that.

Although the decisions at the .Org always go through TosaInu, the senior admin, members do have a little bit of input and are allowed to make comments - it doesn't have to be listened to though.

Both, IMO, work OK - if you want the truth, I do actually like the sound of the TWC system more than the .Org's, but from what I understand it could be a little over the top sometimes. Probably a little more public input into .Org choices wouldn't really go amiss - indeed, I often find the decisions at the top a little unconventional/untidy, but I'm digressing.

Neither TWC nor the .Org are related. The .Org came first (it was April 1999 I believe) and then was followed by TWC in 2003.

I would say it's probably because you are a Junior Member. If you post enough for a mod to promote you to full Membership you should be able to play.

Promotion comes when a Mod decides you are trustworthy and polite enough to be a Member, it shouldn't take very long at all if you contribute and follow the rules. :beam:

So, I've finally un-lurked to delve myself into this great community! :beam:

My history with the Total War series is most unusal, I think...

I started playing with the Shogun demo, back in 1999 if I recall correctly. Only thirteen years old, I was very surprised (and amazed!) at how the game offered a full 3D environment while putting so many troops on the battlefield at once. I still remember the menu music and art direction as one of, if not the best I've ever seen in terms of atmosphere....

But I stopped playing after only a week! Blasphemy, you say! Well, these were the haydays of Age of Empires 2, and I did not have the attention span I have today, just like most kids. The Total War concept just could not compete with instant gratification and fast-paced gameplay.

Thank goodness that it all turned around! Novadays, I can't stand RTS games for the life of me.

After a couple of years, RTW came out. "This looks kinda interesting... I'll look into it when my new computer arrives" was my first thought when looking at the screenshots and videos. Why was I not amazed? Elephants, pigs, Legions, Phalanxes, huge cities and whatnot.... but still, it didn't feel like a very tactics-oriented game to me. It was almost as if the spirit of Sun Tzu has been replaced with a showcase for unit textures and a civilisation-like campaign mode.

I wanted tactical depth, decent AI, rock-paper-scissors that worked, a tasteful art style and a focus on variety.

And I found what I was looking for, only about seven years late.

I too am really looking forward to Empire. My favourite game in the series so far was Medieval, like you. I played Rome and Medieval 2 for hours, but I always had the nagging feeling they could have done more with them than they did.

From the previews and things though Empire looks like it should more than live up to its promise. :2thumbsup:

Same feeling here. They'd done it with Medieval II, although it was extremely hard to pick out faults for Rome when it first came out.

I'm very pleased indeed to have found the org, Quintus.JC and Sir Beane! :beam:

So, what's on my mind? Well, I, like everyone else is anticipating Empire. While not yet being able to run it, it's always nice to have a place to jealously (and secretly) hate the people that can... :whip:

Currently, I have a graphic upgrade for the MedMod IV campaign map in the works, that I intend to share with the people here still interested in the old gem, MTW. It will probably be finished by the time of the ETW release. Then we will see who the real diehards are, who can go back to three games ago...:2thumbsup:

I'm very much a fan of Tyberius' work for the XL mod, and being a graphic artist myself I'm looking at what else to contribute to - I might start to mod ETW skins when I get the oppurtunity.

I am currently a graduate student working on my Master's degree in English. Of course, this means I have less and less time to play games. I do, however, break all the busy-work with the occasional new computer game. I have been a fan of the Total War series since Rome:TW (not as long as many of you).

I have been lurking around these forums for quite some time, but finally decided to register in anticipation of receiving Empire:TW in the mail. I already have Steam (am I the only person that thinks this is a fairly good way of dealing with anti-piracy compared to SecuRom?) so I should be able to install the game, patch and go.

What's this about no console, though? Interesting. I always found it most helpful when modding my own traits back in the day. Maybe the devs will release a tool for it (a version of their own debug console?), or someone else will.

I purchased RTW Gold about two weeks ago, and am hooked, both on the regular game and looking at the various mods.

I've always been interested in history, political more than military - though at this rate that could change! Hence the mods I'm particularly looking at are the ones that make the campaign element more complicated - I've started an RTR Extended Realism campaign and am in the process of installing Europa Barborum. I'd like to know which other mods enhance this side of the game.

Being a Tolkien fan I'll probably look at Fourth Age TW too. Gaming-wise I also enjoy LOTRO.

This looks like a very detailed forum and I'm sure I'll enjoy it here :)
