I messed up on my 2nd install and forgot to add the alex exe and started taking away documents id added previously an started losing myself till i realised what id really done.
Anyway its working again and i have the night attack function in my campaign, but when i tested it as koinon hellon it wouldnt let me click the box for night attack with 1 general.
But with another it let me click the box and night attack worked, shudnt it always let u click the box and then see what the out come is?
I feel the AI has improved in battle now its time to check the campaign role play to see if its made the right effects.
Il be so happy if its working correctly :)

Finally, you got it through.......
Only those generals who have the ability Night Fighter can participate in a night battle.....& they have an extra command star at night.......
Meanwhile, I am playin' EAEM as Macedon & KH are very powerful in that.......But I am gonna' crush them anyways.........

Now i have a problem and its a major draw back
When you click on a unit whilst in a battle or even a spot far away on the map normally on any of the other games ur camera will qfind that unit or spot and place you directly behind it if you quickly move the mouse whilst its performing this action it will be done with in a second wasting no time.
On the alex engine version of EB iv just modded When i do the above rather than my screen finding the unit faster it reverts back to the location i just came from, this is a huge drawback and im wondering does any 1 else get that who has used the alex engine on EB?
shame really i changed my camera settings to exactly the same as my vanilla EB version on my laptop and its still doin it.
Any suggestions wudnt go a miss ty

Yes, that's actually an Alex thing. Sorry for that, but there's nothing we can do about it.

I decided to try my hand at getting EB ALEX (engine only) to work for my comp, and followed all the instruction vartan laid out. I couldn't quite make the whole target-path thing work (only the one that didn't actually target the engine itself, but only the directory it's located in worked, the other kept telling me the file path wasn't valid), but I managed to get it to run with my regular EB icon. It seems to load fine, with the Alexander line appearing at the bottom of the initial game startup screen, but I get some really weird bugs with my saved games. Everything seems to be normal, but the traits of my FMs are all really screwed up - just about all of them have 'Father Avenged Against Sabaens', 'Mediocre When Outnumbered', 'Silun-Pisun (or something) Defender' and 'Recruited General'. All their races are changed, too - in my Epeiros campaign, all my family members are Sogdianos, Ionios, or some other weird race they shouldn't be. Also, in my Baktrian campaign, my faction leader has lost the 'Baktria Victory Conditions' and had it replaced with 'Qart-Hadast Victory Conditions' and 'Saba Victory Conditions'. Everything seems to be as per norm when I start a new campaign, but I can't figure out how to fix this traits thing. Any ideas?
EDIT: I should add that EVERY family member in both my Baktrian and Epirote campaigns also has Hiero of Syrakousai's biography. This is too weird.
Lol guys. It seems like I'm going to have to go back and reinstall EB Alex Engine-Only so I can remember how I exactly did it so I can finally help y'all.
I'm sorry you guys aren't able to fix this. Maksimus is this mod's creator and he knows the ins and outs. It really was quite simple for me to get it working but then again, I catch on really quickly to stuff like this.
Best of luck and I'll let y'all know if I get any good results.
P.S. I hope I can actually continue my saved campaign using the EB Alex Engine Only mod.

Save games do not work with EB (Alex engine)......The traits get messed up in exactly the same way as mentioned by option......In my macedonian campaign, my faction heir was making the Seleucids bite the dust........After replacing the engine files in favour of ALEX engine, he got the same traits as mentioned by option......replacing his fine character with rubbish !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
@ Lionhard, you can pause the game to save time when giving commands..........

hello , well just to say i finaly put alex engine to work as well the alex exe, i kwon it i didnt mess up with the instalation, the problem was the trivial script, in my instalation of EB the Documentation, and trivial script werent install in Rome total war folder they were in another folder diferent from C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War
What i did was to move the trivial script folder to rome TW and change the single player exe and fire it up, and it worked, been doing a nice campaing with no ctds so far , very smoothly :P and i can still play online becouse i use the MP icon exe who starts with rome exe and not the alex exe. just to report it if anyone as the same problem.

I had 1 CDT with Koinon Hellon when i went to end a turn, other than that and my camera which ill have to get used to, i have no problems.
Oh 1 thing iv been taking the southern cities from macedonia and in the process they did not retaliate for years, even though they had half garrison cities that were not under threat. (I even had time to send my whole army and take Krete with out any trouble from macedonia) (this was after i had just took 2 of their cities)
1 other note was that normally at the start epirus takes pella with phyrros and his mighty army but for the first time with the alex engine installed epirus did not even attack pella but just sat in the same place next to pella until finally a macedonian army attacked.
As mentioned above Macedonia actually attacked phyrros and failed presenting phyrros with a heroic victory.
In my 10 year campaign so far No cities have been seiged by either macedonia or epirus which is weird :S
Also 1 of the main points here is that macedonia attack a half garrisoned city of mine with only 2 units (a general) and a basic phalanax. when i countered the seige they simply ran away.
I thought installing alex was supposed to stop idiotic things like this happening lol?
I have to say in battle the AI seems better, i only had 1 problem when seiging krete 3 ai units on the walls held their positions whilst i was raping the rest of the ai in the middle and around the fort.
Oh and question. What advantages/disadvantages/effects does night attack make?

I am also playing as Macedon on an H/H difficulty in EAEM......yeah, Pyrrohs did'nt attack me........instead he moved his army to his own country possibly to attack the northern Illyrians or to attack Rome.....Only time will tell how he'll get his next pyrrhic victory........:smash:

So, does anyone know where I can read more about EAEM? I recommended the normal version to lionhard because it is what he seemed to want, not to mention EAEM is trickier to install.
I was thinking of switching from regular EB on ALEX to EAEM but I am not sure what the advantages are, as I can simply add the units I want myself, and add the ones I really want, such as certain RTR units I ahd my eye on...
EAEM is just as easy to install.
Once you've got RTW 1.5 and the Alex executable on your computer, run EAEM install, copy fixes, and make the appropriate shortcut. Voila. Simple as that.
P.S. I wouldn't play EAEM unless I enjoyed the extra challenge. Plus, it's nice that you start with elites. Oh, and you won't really know how good it is unless you install it for yourself. Just try it out, you've nothing to lose =]

it sounds like a good mod but i dont want to stray too far from EB.
That alex mod AI is deffo better, the only let down is the camera modes that the alex engine posses.
Any 1 got an answer for what advantages u get from performing a night attack?
p.s has ne 1 got any decent ss's from the EAEM game that could help ppl see what its like.
This damn mod shud have its own forum or web page, 1 single topic holding all the info between 2 little mods is a joke ppl r confused and i think this mod would have lost a lot of popularity on the fact ppl struggle to understand whats goin on.

EAEM is just as easy to install.
Once you've got RTW 1.5 and the Alex executable on your computer, run EAEM install, copy fixes, and make the appropriate shortcut. Voila. Simple as that.
Easy for you and me, but lionhard had difficulty installing the normal alex.exe, hence my recommendation. I am a rather experienced modder myself, so the installation difficulty is irrelevant.
How save-game compatible is EAEM? What does it feature? Honestly. I am not going to install something I have no idea about. I am not going to make a copy of RTW and EB just for this mod. I have already downloaded it, but I need more info on it. I am definitely going to keep the vanilla EB desc_strat because the starting elites feature is not realistic.
@AP: consider EAEM not save compatible
@lion: the screens wont say much. game looks the same acts the same. same AI, etc as engine only (of course). only some stuff like full stack enemies and rebels and cities and so on and so forth. if you're like AP, you won't bother taking a try. if you do have time and are willing, I suggest you try it. it won't hurt.

I took a screenshot of the results of my 1st battle in EAEM......It shows a lot of units you get in the game....I pressed the printscreen key when the results were displayed & than pasted it in an open office document.....Any idea how to upload it here ??????
@ Lionhard, Can't answer that for sure.....but in EAEM as macedon...there is a mercenary general for KH alongside Chermiondes......if I lay siege on Athens and attack than the mercenary general becomes reinforcements for KH....but if I attack at night than KH has no reinforcements at Athens......cause that general is not night battle capable......

Yeh save it in paint as a JPEG file, it will then be stored in my pictures u can then choose manage attachments at the bottom when u make a post and chose to browse and upload the picture.
It has to be a JPEG btw so make sure u change it :P
P.s can ur generals aqquier the trait night attack or are they born with it?
Also are their any other traits unique to Alexander?
i might be being dumb here, but were do you install EAEM to?
is it your r:tw folder, or the EB folder?

I meant to ask, following reading some info on how factions act different with the alex engine, i read that some guy was casse and the rebels attacked him and killed casse, its also knowledge that naval invations r common.
Now my question is, on vanilla EB u never get casse coming onto mainland europe they dont even build ships also small islands including krete and sardin and cyprus never get invaded by the AI. Does using Alex change this?
Has any 1 experienced anything mad that would never happen on vanilla EB. (I say mad but its what shud actually happen if the game had a proper engine lol)
p.s i have no family members with the night attack ability the only family member i had with it died so what happends now will some 1 randomly spawn with night attack ability?

But then when i want to add the shortcut line...it wont let me..it doesn't recognize the path...or something like that(its in dutch here)

also i have no family members with the night fight ability and i have never been attacked by night so whats the deal with it, is it ever used in campaign?
I am a bit sad because I have failed to get the Alex (and BI for that matter) for EB 1.2 to work.
I have completely scraped out all RTW and mods from my system. I then:
1. Installed RTW GE
2 Installed ALX
3 Installed EB 1.1
4 Installed EB 1.2
5 Installed fixes
6 Installed Alex for EB 1.2
7 Changed target (and made sure it had the right "start in" location) on the ALX shortie
FIVE TIMES.
Each time it loads up fine (nice'n'quick too) but I click on Main Campaign and it says "Choose an item from the list". Did the same when I tried to re-install EB for BI.
I put this down to my system being a bit long in the tooth, and suspect ETW has played some havoc with my system. By golly it was hard to get rid of it, and especially Steam, which seemingly ruined my M2TW install (totally bugged when I installed ETW, and now I can't uninstall some components, very angry it has made me).
I return to EB 1.2 without ALX or BI: its a fantastic mod, but I'm sad I didn't get to taste ALX. Maybe when I get my next machine in a year or two...

I didn't want to have to do this, but alright.

Unzip this file to...say your desktop. Open the folder. Inside you will find two objects: 1) a shortcut called alxeb and 2) a folder named 'eb' (without quotes).
Before you proceed, make sure you have done the following:
Fresh install of RTW (do not install RTW into program files, install into a directory in root of your drive).
For convenience, let us assume we are installing Rome Total War into C:\RTW_EB
Patch RTW 1.3
Patch RTW 1.5
Install EB 1.1 into C:\RTW_EB
Patch EB 1.2 into C:\RTW_EB
EB 1.2 Fixes (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=109936) (You will need to unzip these fixes into C:\RTW_EB\EB\Data. If you did this correctly you will be prompted with endless overwrite prompts...choose to overwrite all.)
Copy alex executable file (engine file with purple icon) from your Alexander CD into C:\RTW_EB
Copy 'eb' folder that I mentioned in the beginning into C:\RTW_EB where the EB folder from the EB installation is located.
This will prompt you to overwrite files that may be located within the original EB folder (checks for shared file names), choose Yes to overwrite all files.
Phew...now that you've done the bulk of the work, go back to the shortcut to the EB_Alex game that you found from the zip file you downloaded. Go to its properties page and if I remember correctly there are two important boxes named Target and Launch Path or just Path. Anyways, one points to ...\Rome - Total War\rtw-alex.exe or something along those lines. Change the first part to say C:\RTW_EB because THAT is where your ALEX engine file from your CD is located (you copied it in the beginning, remember?)
Do the same with the launch path (does not point to file, only should change from C:\Program files\activision\rome... to C:\RTW_EB).
Good luck and I hope this helps because I have not used this engine or EAEM mod for over a month (because I need vanilla EB 1.2 to play online with others...I find playing humans more fun than the campaign. You can still have a separate EB folder just for the Alex engine so you can campaign, but that's a long long story. I can't be bothered!)
Use this as guidance cyclops it worked for me ur probaly not doing something simple like dragging over the alex icon or installing data properly.
Also donnot instal alex the game into the same folder as ur going to use ur fresh copy of RTW with EB Make sure u make a fresh copy of rtw 1.5 to do modding

In details:

2. Install Alexander expansion or extract the Alx.exe file only into your RTW folder.
3. Install EB 11 and EB 12.
4. EB fixes.

Hi, i tried to install the full mod,when i install it without the last fixes all goes fine, but after i install the fixes in the front page(OFFICIAL FIXES Last update 17 april 2009 ) i receive an error message when loading and it returns to desktop.

I played some turns with chartage, the mod seems really well done and the Ia much improved. With the ai_dont_attack_faction feature and the stronger rebels i think i will see an much slower and historical espansion of the ai, wich is good, never liked Rome's conquest of scandinavia. The economy seems much better too, you can't simply swim in the money anymore. My only concern is about buildings. Raising the construction time a little, even double them, is good, but like now i think is too much. It's true that the construction of an Huge palace take dozens of years, but with the rtw system you can build only one thing at once, in this way you can't simply have enough development. Only the building of an palace, recruitment system and an harbour take like 120 turns/30 years, so you can't for example develope Capua like it was in the end of timeframe, with advanced aqueducts, advanced system of recruitment, forum, farms, palaces, huge harbours etc.
And here is the question :beam:
I had try to upgrade a city by cheating to test some things of the mod(arretium, by adding population and buildings) but seems that i can't build the palace needed to upgrade the city. That means that all the city will not be upgraded in the whole timeframe?
I think i will reduce all construction times by half, do you think it will screw the mod balance?
And vartan what file is the .DS Store in your zip?
Ignore those. Those are useless files, so is the MacOSx folder. These are only there because I made the zip file on my Macintosh computer. Sorry about the inconvenience.

Guys im still currently playing EB with the alex engine and iv made a few tests to clear my mind and to be sure it actually is better AI.
I have vanilla EB on my laptop so i started a custom match on my pc with alex eb comparing to my laptop with vanilla eb and the exact same things happend every time. I played out like 6 or 7 battles with different units making surer everything was exactly the same. I thought Alex was supposed to act smarter?
So far in my campaign, Everything is playing out as normal and the same things r happening that hapend in the 20 other campaigns iv played out over the last year on vanilla EB.
Has any 1 got any suggestions how to test if this is better than vanilla EB? or if iv installed wrong?

same shit happened to me, I am going to see what happens with new family members, i.e if i sit it out will the problem resolve itself
I am part the way through an awesome hai campagin and it would be a shame if everything stays mesed up

Yep did all that. Step by step. Five times. Not going bonkers as a result, just a twitch in the left eyeball.
I appreciate all the kind advice given (Vartan in particular, but all of the advice is gratefully recieved) and I sadly resign myself to missing out.
My system was put together in 2001 or 02 by a mate, it has been absolutely top shelf for the duration but is now nearing the end. It ran ETW rather shakily and I doubt it will support the much anticipated SC2 so I'll have to budget in a new system soon.

Alex engine is not mod, its just engine. With engine files you need to have epic battles to get night battle traits to your generals.

Hi, your target line is wrong pls see first page. In other case, first page is detailed since i had MUCH MUCH more complains when it was simple.

I have won lots of heroic victories and not got night attack?
Also none of the enemy have night attack seems a waste to have it in alex, i wonder if its used much in the alex campaign?
Also im only saying the AI is not very intelligent and versitile because at the start of this topic it states how amasing the AI changed with the alex engine.
Im not prepared to dl some sub mod that changes EB, theirs no info here about it and the whole reason i visit these forums is because of vanilla EB.
Alex was just supposed to change the AI to make it better and so far iv had no naval invasions, and havnt seen any evidence of troops being retrained.
Maybe iv installed it wrong?
But if all this other stuff works ok i must have installed it correctly right?

Your questions and remarks are nice posted on wrong address, vanilla EB thread deals with issues of EB vanilla game its in other section of the forum.
However, even just changing target line is beneficial tho no night traits are set on start since its is vanilla eb.
Alx.exe AI has all the advantages that are posted on the main forum. Due to EB vanilla RTW.exe based setup in the script, most of the AI features are very hard to see by inexperienced players while playing vanilla EB using Alx.exe.
EAEM has gone to Total PC Gaming (UK) magazine writen by
Balbor (Creative Director of Forth Age:Total War).
This is the best mod online for EB that makes EB - ALXEB game.
I hope you try it one day :)

maybe i will try it 1 day but for now ill stick with EB which iv played for over a year their is lots of information on the forum. Their is no info on this mod of urs and countless people are struggling to install it.
I am posting here about problems with alex enigne because at the start of this topic you kept lots of people on the edge of their seats with pics of changes in EB gameplay ect. My only question was to general public who have used this engine to see if they have the same problem as me or if it could be my install.
Im not a big modder hence spending over a week trying to install the alex engine thx to vartan i did it.
Maybe its all a coincidence but for the 10 or so campaigns iv carried out over 200 bc everything is playing out the same.

As i wrote, and as it is, AI is better and its up to players to you use it.
EB vanilla script really does cripple AI and AI does not have enough population or coins to Expand to alx AI features in most cases (EAEM fix that). Actually you can see this improvements if enemy factions are rich not poor and or broke. In this case its really up to players to understand how EB vanilla works in consideration to the comments.
Almost every single RTW mod that comes out i get pm's from their devs and project leaders asking me how to implement alx.exe.
Other thing about install issues,
All issues ppl have had with installation are in the forum threads. And i have looked into it few times so far.
What I can say is this.
Alx.exe AI files and EAEM so far, (since 2007) combined with all eb expansions and links uploaded on the main page of this thread, is used by tens of thousands of ppl. And really only few people had issues.
Year ago when the thread was much more simple I had issues with ppl that wanted more details.

It reccomends a fresh copy of RTW 1.5 so i have a spare copy of RTW 1.5 and then in my main copy the vanilla versions of rtw and alex and then i have mods such as EB and ROP
Edit: you might have to reinstall RTW to get a fresh copy for modding its hard to distinguish which files belong where when uv got all 3 of them in 1 file (if u have alex and bi installed that is)

its a generic error, you should reinstal your game RTW and EB and EAEM
I re installed using Program Files/ ACIVSION / rather than creative assembly and HEY PRESTO! it works
this is a very good engine - thanks very very much!!
BUT!!! now in my campaign I am crashing while loading a battle - as apparently the model for the Bosphoran Infantry is missing...... the file path stated that this would be in BI - which i dont have - will installing this solve the issue or am I in a sticky situation?

Im doing a romani campaign atm and im having real trouble, macedonia has 9 full stack armies marching around slapping everything, they have stretched around dacia leaving them along due to them being allied, swarmed into the north to bospria (however u spell it) and have the whole of modern day turkey, segestia is my strong hold and i am just about holding them off. (its been 15 years and they r still throwing everything at me.
Meanwhile im struggling to gain territory in germany i seem to be defending on all frounts.
Im hoping averini dont attack me cas ill have to migrate to carthage (god knows how tough they are now they have been left alone for years and are taking ptolemaics lands which are vast.
Im on the edge of my seat but my main query is that macedonia are so strong is that due to me using alexander with EB can any 1 answer this?

its hard atm because i tryed blitzing the germans and they threw everything they had at me after counquering half their empire now they took back the north and i am too weak and the settlements i own are unhappy due to war tax, i can only afford to upkeep 4 full stack armies max. 2 of those are in germany and 2 are defending from macedonia. I need to kill germany before i can mass my units into macedonia but everytime i gain an extra foot they take it back, im fighting with mercenarys and few roman soldiers.
Dont get me wrong im loving it because its hard, but im scared because macedonia have 5 full stacks finishing epirus off, they r gonna slap me hard in a matter of years. Im already making plans to emmigrate to carthage with my entire empire.
Edit: the battles are easy enough when i have reasonable force but the enemies outnumber me.
This is down to me having a non attack policy until 250 bc lol

i am new here and have joined couse' of a BIG problem after installing the last fixes for "EB on ALEX" after my roman campain chrashes around 230 BC.
now there is an CTD saying "unspecified unit type roman legonary first cohort i in the export_dscr_buildings" and somthing about "no unit model for indian infantry in dscr_rebels ... "
eb is a great game and alex.exe is the best engine for it, so i would wish to continue playing, please help. :embarassed:

Victory! Didn't rush except in the beginning to get out of the red. The way I micromanage everything it took me over a month, probably well over 70 hours... O_O Here's some stats in case someone is curious.
Setup: EB 1.2 + EAEM Full Mod
Faction: Arche Seleukia
Time: Summer 207
Turns: 66 * 4 = 264
Regions: 84
Money: 12 millions
Favorite unit: Armoured Elephants
Would have played more with all those recruitable in-town Chinese units in Sulek (far right below Saka) but discovered them way too late. (Those Jian Masters with 2 hit points, 15 Att , 35 Def, Frighten Enemy really look badass)
It was a challenging game especially in the beginning but there were a few annoyances. I never got attacked much and that for each city there is one full stack outside the wall that never moves (even after the city is taken by holding the town center for example). Oh and the rebels never attacked any city in my game. Oh and this point is more EB than Alex but the yearly history briefings are way too short and summarized, more like a reminder for someone already versed in history. "some general won took some city, period" Didn't retain much history that way. The units description are much more interesting.
And I'll answer my own question about the mine centers not generating income for example Antiocheia it is not true, I did the math and they do. It's just that you can't see it in the settlement details when the numbers get too high. ^_^

And here's one from my humble beginnings after I just took Baktria. My only chance in this battle was to hold the town center which I did after several tries. You can see that the outside defending army just freeze after that.

Notice also how most the map stays rebel, I noticed with my spies that AI factions have a very hard time conquering rebels, losing almost every battle until the rebel army is mostly gone. Only Rome has some limited success and that's only about 5 rebel towns in 66 years. I have to say my hardest fights were always against rebels, not a faction. Mostly due to the quality of troops.
My last battle and heroic victory (lost 1/3 of my elephants). Here my reinforcements were only 13 Hellenic Skirmishers.

the reinforcements up there didnt load up ingame battle for 2 reasons - 1 preferences (unlimited men on the battlefield - its txt preferences) - 2 your PC can not handle that much men on the battlefield (which is most common reason those kind of armies dont load)
They are set there so that AI dont teke certain locations to fast therefore unblance the game on the long run. Ussually in all my battles that army shows up, its one of the other reason.

i have answer for that, its about skeletons - game engine (eb skeletons dont have crosbow), and what i saw at that time, when they passed and invaded from sources on net and books. They didnt take crosbows then to Baktria but archers and horsmen.. well dunno for 100% but was imposible to add croswbows
im having the same problem. being that the factions dont actually expand due to the pure ownage that the rebels are. could you tell me how to mod the game so that the rebels are weaker? my most difficult battles were against the rebels as well and i usually fight them around 2 times before i actually beat them. its not really that fun fighting rebels over and over. i actually started to miss fighting other factions.
the getai hadnt moved by the time i got to them in 225 bc. i came with 5 stacks and wiped them out with 1 battle where i attacked the enemy base and won.
so yeah, if there is a way to weaken the rebels id really like to know how.

You could always remove elite units from rebels armies (except prestigious cities & famous generals) like I did by modding descr_strat & you can deprive them of the ability to train elite units......I did that because it really sucked to see rebel generals commanding Hetairoi......

Most of the issues about rebels are random and its depending on which faction you play with.
Than if your settings are not on very hard campaign settings, that can be 1 more issue, and it may happen you are just that good and you advance before enemy factions :idea2:

Yes very hard campaign is AI max capacity, but I could not set it that as default, didnt know how D:
its not really helping much. ive just played 80 years on VH/m and the ai has only expanded 2-4 regions each. i really think you need to weaken the rebel stacks.

I can upload the file.......but can you suggest any good place to upload.......plus, I've mainly modified the hellenic armies as they were the ones who had rebels commanding Hetairoi as I don't have much idea about the elite units of other factions......so you may not prefer it.....
Main changes are removal of all hellenic faction elite units from the rebel armies & replacing them with strong but not the elite units like Pergamnon's generals have their Argyraspides replaced with traditional Pzehtairoi........

I even have unofficial trait bug fixes in my installation.
the problem is I used LZ3's adaptation of your mod so I have no idea on your basic files.
and no idea which files he changed.
so my install may have lz3's files of your mod on your vanilla...:sweatdrop:
so a complete reinstalation of EB is necessary.
So I will have time at the weekend if my files does not make any problem on your vanilla, I may upload it easily.

EDU, EDB and DMB files main txts are easy part; I have no problem with that but my adaptation itself has double memory than your files nearly 250 mb I need to reduce the size to make it easier, but I do not know how or what program can enable to reduce its size without losing any data. :sweatdrop:

You don't want to use wordpad or notepad in critical file changes, such as those that might be affected negatively by formatting (e.g. file descriptions for Rome: Total War). Try Notepad++.

You can just try to make mini submod for eaem, but for sure I cant work on it, nor I can fix bug's or anything like that, i suggest you only replace Battle Models from EDU, and UI's - thats it, replace existing legion's with others you want, only in EDU models and US'- description etc

I already given up using First Cohorts. So just normal named legion. If I use EB's preatorian EDU with my model, then I finally worry about 35 models.
some ships may fit...
or abandoned units golidic something like that "the hammerman" if they are still in EDU.

You use RS UI's and Battle models in DMB (there is space there) and you only Re-place Solider model txt line in EDU, for already set Legion's. And you will have Eaem with RS Legion look's.
However when you set UI's you will have to rename the description of UI's or just overwrite the existing ones.
I cant imagine what more to say but to do it myself, I just dont have the time sry :whip:

I see what you mean but It is a torture for me to cut even one of your units, they are all great jobs :yes: so I have already planned to replace republican 13 legion with ships you have 27 so I left 14 ships
ı need 22 more if I leave as they are I will only add 13 republican legions on EAEM on ships' entries.
later I may cut 22 more for -Imperial Legions as well.

I change the Link in the "Run europa Barbarorum" link.
I click the link, but it doesn't do anything.
I click "play single player", it loads, I see the alexander loading screen. Then just "pop" away it goes...
what happened? what could it have been?

1. Install Rome Total War + 1,3 and 1,5 patches.
2. Install Alexander expansion or extract the Alx.exe file only into your RTW folder.
3. Install EB 11 and EB 12.
4. EB fixes.
a) To play EB with only improved engine you need use

b) If you want to play full modification you need to use
5. EAEM files.
5a. EAEM fixes.
6. Change the target line of EB.exe single player.
I did 1 to 3
I check, eb 1.2 ran perfectly.
I only have 1 enige file from alex though... are there more?
as for step 4, where can I find them?
And another thing... I have two shortcuts I can find "Run europa barbarorum" and "play single player"
The first targets "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -mod:eb -show_err
the second "C:\Program Files\EBTrivialScript\EBTrivialScript.exe" -s ebconfig.xml -runeb -type "Single Player"

When I close down I get an error message saying that at EB/Data/script/Show_me/EBBS_script he doesn't knwo the trait at line 177.
The trait is "EnemyCampCaptured".
I'm guessing it's related, because if I open the console window and see all used codes, all I see is "Add_money_Greek_cities", 10000 in total or so...
What do I do? (I don't want the money, I want the AI to get it ;~))

Eaem is designed as stand alone mod, if you have any other mods or EB12 official updates that overwrite eaem files mod wil not work :juggle2:
Well, that's the weird part, I'm only using the engine, I did:
-instal RTW, patch RTW 1.3 1.5 (check if it ran, it did)
-install Alexander add on, check to see it ran, it did
-EB 1.1 and 1.2
-EB 1.2 fixes for Aex, got it from https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=105242, http://www.filefront.com/Alx+pack3exe/;13801168;/fileinfo.html
-copied the "EB_on_Alx1.2" data to my eb folder
-copied chat_filter.san and ran the show again.... and it did....

Well, that's the weird part, I'm only using the engine, I did:
-instal RTW, patch RTW 1.3 1.5 (check if it ran, it did)
-install Alexander add on, check to see it ran, it did
-EB 1.1 and 1.2
-EB 1.2 fixes for Aex, got it from https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=105242, http://www.filefront.com/Alx+pack3exe/;13801168;/fileinfo.html
-copied the "EB_on_Alx1.2" data to my eb folder
-copied chat_filter.san and ran the show again.... and it did....

these fixes(bold) are not those fixes? I'm confused...
Anyway, I got it running though, the entire problem was the Spoils Of Victory submod in those fixes, it didn't install all their stuff in the traits and vnv_enums and stuff...
However, the instructions supplied with it were good enough to help me.

some txt issues may occur but they are not as important to gameplay, those kind of issues happened due to EB team lack of support to mini mods. For example, no one really know what txt programs they used to edit txt files until much later.

I am playing Pontus with Alex.exe and for some reason almost every battle I enter or finish, the game crashes. Also I try to take some cities and when I pick what i want to do to the population it crashes. Now i have been playing with Kart-hadast for sometime and I had maybe 2 crashes. Is there a FIX for this probelm or anything else I can do to lessen the CTD?

modding EDU, EDB, and traits are very popular so any mod that mods them simply kills this mod.
I am the only person who modified ancillaries (so far) and movement points so my EOM and Realist movement mod is compatible with any EB mod.
but nearly %90 of the EB mods modifies one of this files.
also EBBS (EB scripting) modding is very popular as well..

Supergosc, if you make a shortcut for your EB and add -show_err onto the end and see what comes up you might be closer to finding out what's wrong.
To be honest though, you're probably better off just uninstalling and replacing with your backup.

P.S. After I keep getting some crashes I paused my conversion on your vanilla.
I think that's because descr_strat file that you described or added the units I deleted in it.
BTW at the moment I am busy to discover your units that you have added in your mod.
This week I can upload Republican Legions (13 marian legion) without first cohorts of course after I found where did you put that units in your strat files.
so I am indecisive at the moment to add the other 22 Augustan/Emperial legions or not.
It will be a conversion but frontie limited to 600 MG per upload so I think I should cut some of my mods to have some more space.
At the moment I feel myself as an executioner; I am making some black list on which units will be sacrificed.
BTW I hope this trait fix will help to cure some CTDs.

I've been away for a while, and just wanted to ask a question about the ALX mod for EB.
I was very interested in this mod originally, but left it alone in the end because I didn't like the idea of the AI retraining its units, because I thought that it could mean a defeated army could retreat into a city right after the battle (as it does if it has enough movement points left) and then retrain all its units and be back up to its full strength straight away at the start of my next turn, while my army is still heavily depleted - basically negating all of my achievement in winning the battle.
Is this what actually happens in your mod?
I never retrain units myself, I always raise new ones to reinforce them, merging the depleted units with the new recruits. It seems better that way, because when you merge experienced units with new ones, the experienced unit drops in experience. So I never get triple-gold-chevron units in my armies, I rarely get a single silver chevron.
The Alexander expansion was tweaked for Alexander's blitz campaign against Persia, fighting all the way - but I prefer a very slow, quiet, economy-building EB campaign experience, more Sim Ancient City than Total War, with battles few and far between. My ideal is 90% of turns passing peacefully with no battles at all.
Can ALX create that experience for me, or is it better for 'blitz' style gameplay?

AI expansion depends on the overall balance of the game and start map power share, in all my tests even little wrong tweak on the start map can disbalance the progress etc.. but lets get back to the question.

''triple-gold-chevron'' units are a myth; AI only retrains units that can fit in the city it does not move units from the city out of the city so that another army would enter - retrain itself and than sailed away against the Enemy - its not like that, its much more realistic - In Eaem Ai ussually has towns half or full of units already, AI wont pull back units from distant lands and retrain them no matter how elite they are; and it can only retrain as much soldiers if it has 1- money 2- population in the city to do so 3- space to add units in and IF it does so its done usually by agressive faction with affinities of Caesar in start files i belive
And btw, Eaem AI and player do not have ability as in Vanilla EB to make army and city barracks everywhere, but in only few locations, so most units that are retrained overall are not as important. :juggle2:

plus I can say that ALEX AI does not often retrain, and I retrain my troops so I have no problem if AI does it as well.
on the other hand I think Victory conditions mod helps AI expansion a little bit, but do not expect miracles. so it deserves a try.

Ok, so I'm trying to get EAEM to work. Lots of trouble I have encountered...
I have done EVERYTHING instructed. Fixes, bug fixes, etc. Chat filter.san was already there, and I overwrote the exact same file, so it seems. I even redid the whole process. I am almost completely out of ideas. The only thing I can think of is reinstalling eb, but 1.1 is like a gig big in size, so I want to try that as a last resort. Besides, I don't think that's even the problem, as eb1.2 works fine. HALP!!:help:
Btw, is there a way I can uninstall this mod?

you install EAEM in Program Files\Rome - Total War, correct? not Program Files\Rome - Total War\EB\?

i installed RTW in D drive so you can just replace everything from D:/rome - total war/ and replace it with your install directory.
i play in windows mode so i put -ne in there. i put it in twice because sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt. if you play full screen mode then take it out.

Also, I'm very much liking this mod so far - apart from the better battle AI and diplomatic model (from what I can see), I'm already at about 250BC and most factions have only taken one or two additional provinces at most, unlike the normal situation at 250BC in regular EB where either AS or the Ptolemy has blitzed most of Asia.

Hi, this is my 1st message here and hope not the last.
Maksimus, thanks for using your time to create this mod. It's simply the best. I've played 3 roman campaigns, the last one till the year 10BC when i could reach to all roman goals, and it has been fun for months. Only the time of construction for major buildings makes the game less atractive because that causes AI not to get better troops till late game, and you have to play same battles against levies again and again for too much time. My only complaint is that and the use of Citymod, but are minor complaints.
And 2 minor bugs i found: "Libian general" and "Baktrian Late Bodyguard" are shown as peasants, and "Catapultae"-"Scorpiones" statistics are wrong, "Catapulatae" is supposed to have more attack and it has less than "Scorpiones", isn't it?

I'm using the last fixes and still have the peasants image in the pool for the baktrian as seen on image.
I always play on very hard, and the heavy starting armies maybe are too much heavy for the AI at some places because some rebels just drain the reinf of some factions, Sweboz are the example. But they assault, on the late game, Casse islands with canoes! :beam:

Hi - I'm playing EB 1.2 with the Alexander Engine (but not the mod) and i can't see any trade fleets or caravans moving about at all in it - this is dozens of turns into the game with lots of ports, roads and markets built. Also the AI seems very passive so far. Is this all normal or is there something wrong with my installation?
Also when i built client state in one city - which in EB usually gets you a client ruler - there was no client ruler. It changed the Carthaginian family member i had there into the client ruler instead. I can build Greek mercenary general there, but when i did he was a Carthaginian, which will be confusing later.
And city wall upgrades that normally get you extra happiness in EB don't seem to know.
Does any of EB work with the Alx engine?
(I have trivial script installed - should i uninstall it?)
In fact it's changed all of my family members governing cities into client rulers now - even the ones in Homeland provinces, including my faction leader in Carthage - and i didnt build any new government for any city except Syracuse :cry:

No. EB can be played just fine on alex.exe.
In answer to your last three posts:

- The type 4 government allows you to recruit a general type unit; recruit one and leave him in the town. Congratulations, you've just got yourself a client ruler. Note that client rulers can only govern allied states (type 4 governments; with any other government they get negative trait that cause unrest, etc).
Sadly while the bodyguard of the recruited general will be region specific, the portrait, name and traits he gets are tied to the your faction.

Eh? How is a unitpicture not showing up caused by the DMB, or the limit on the EDU?
Unless I'm missing something here, the game just check the dictionary line in the EDU and then looks for a file called "#<dictionary line>.tga" in the faction folder under UI/Units folder and one called "<dictionary line>_info.tga" in the same folder under UI/Unit_info folder.
As long as the picture is there, with the right name, in the right folder; the picture should show up.

Hrm, honestly that still doesn't make any sense to me.
The entries in the DMB and the general_unit and general_unit_upgrade attributes don't have anything to with the UI pictures.
At least I've never seen anything to suggest that; now, I don't use your full alexmod, I just use the alex.exe, so I haven't looked at what Tetoaku's problem could be. But are you sure the problem isn't just that if the picture is present, it's either named incorrectly, or just misplaced in the wrong folder?
If it isn't that, then could you describe what the problem is? Because I'm curious.

erm... how to explain, ... mod has recruitable generals using same models diff names but same descr so they would not be mixed.. see.. Family members from the start use the First general_unit unit of its ownership in the EDU line, that is why all other recruitable generals come as ALXEB_etc general_unit only after the first one that we want to be as faction one.. DMB has more spots but EDU is full, if its generic error.. as.. it may seem (unless i add that ui in every folder.. to see) .. only way to fix it is adding 1 more EDU spot or in this case 2 for missing generals that have issues with description via UI.. also it can be that the UI folder is just named diff which I doubt :juggle2:

I'm going to be honest here, I realise English isn't your first language - it isn't mine either - but I have no clue what you tried to tell me in that post.
If a faction "A" can recruit a unit, they need the picture for that unit in the folder named "A" under UI/Unit_info and UI/Units. Or if the unit uses the mercenary slot, it needs to be in the merc folder there.
So, if you have a recruitable general that any faction can recruit, unless it uses the merc slot, it's picture needs to be in every faction's folder.
Missing units pictures has - as far as I know - nothing to do with the hardcoded limits on the EDU or DMB.

Also, during these 2 years since Alx.exe pionering by my data (since file front removed the files many times) there have been over 10 thousands of downloads for the mod itself (there are many international forums that like EB from all over the world that use Alx.exe or Eaem) and only on these forums there have been soo many replies and questions, very very few have installation probs maybe coz most installed other mods before i am not sure :inquisitive:
Sorry - Your installation instructions are clearer than i thought (or you've made them clearer - don't know which) - pretty obvious the first download link is for the files for just using the ALX engine with EB. The ones Varcan put the link to seem to be the same except it has a file called .DS_Store

I don't remember completely but as far as I can recall, somebody was having issues with the engine mod to allow EB to work with Alexander engine and for some reason the download links on the front page weren't working. This is why I temporarily uploaded my backup version so the person could use the mod. (The ds/store file is nothing but a thumbnail arrangement file if I'm not mistaken, because I had uploaded from my macintosh computer.)

Sorry but I'm quite at a loss.
I just want to play vanilla EB using alex.exe, no other submod necessary.
So after installing R:TW 1.5, EB 1.1 and 1.2 and fixes, I only need to copy 2 files i.e. alex.exe and chat_filter.san to corresponding directory, and then create a proper shotcut, no Alexander full installation needed, is it so?
However in Maksimus's original post, he said you need to edit a ton of *.txt files such as export_descr_character_traits.txt etc. manually, that's scaring...
I believe or rather hope I don't need to do this, right?

The only problem you'll have is that all of your generals will not die of natural causes, which can be annoying.
Maksimus' instructions on the first page are pretty clear and it's just a copy-paste job.
If you feel brave enough to try it, just remember two things. Do not edit the files with notepad, it messes them up. I'd adive using CrimsonEditor or Notepad++.
Secondly, make back ups!
Then I see.

The only problem you'll have is that all of your generals will not die of natural causes, which can be annoying.
Maksimus' instructions on the first page are pretty clear and it's just a copy-paste job.
If you feel brave enough to try it, just remember two things. Do not edit the files with notepad, it messes them up. I'd adive using CrimsonEditor or Notepad++.
Secondly, make back ups!

Sorry but I'm quite at a loss.
I just want to play vanilla EB using alex.exe, no other submod necessary.
So after installing R:TW 1.5, EB 1.1 and 1.2 and fixes, I only need to copy 2 files i.e. alex.exe and chat_filter.san to corresponding directory, and then create a proper shotcut, no Alexander full installation needed, is it so?
However in Maksimus's original post, he said you need to edit a ton of *.txt files such as export_descr_character_traits.txt etc. manually, that's scaring...
I believe or rather hope I don't need to do this, right?
You just download the files and drag them in EB forlder, then manually change target line :yes:
Does anyone get a glitch where after the general gives his pre-battle speech and you don't click "start deployment" for a while, the screen drags back and turns toward the sun and freezes up? I've been getting it a lot but I use the EB 1.2 Mod pack:wall:

No, it doesn't work without Alex. This mod is the adaptation of EB for Alex.

I appreciate the Alex mod will not work without the Alex game expansion! What I need to know is, if I installed first a clean installation of RTW Gold (i.e. RTW basic game + BI expansion) and then installed the Alex expansion on top of that, will this mod work?
Or does the Alex mod require a clean installation of just the basic RTW game (patched to 1.5) followed by the Alex mod (WITHOUT the BI expansion)? What I am trying to find out is, will the act of installing BI (because BI is part of RTW Gold) interfere with the installation of the Alex mod?
I have RTW gold and RTW gold will install the basic RTW game AND the BI expansion (there is no way to just install RTW basic game on it's own). The Alex expansion would then need to be installed on top of RTW + BI.

Ah: yes, the presence or absence of BI should not make any difference. rtw.exe, bi.exe and alex.exe are all separate files.

I have the Steam version of RTW: Alex and am wondering how I can get it to work. I already got EB 1.2 with the fixes working fine on it.
I did some searches and it seems that while some people had questions about the Steam version, they were never really answered.

edit: Found a way around it in my case (if you have a cd version of RTW as well).
If you do have a cd version of RTW than what you need to do is install it, patch it, install EB on top of it and update it. Then go to your steamapps folder and to the Rome Total War Alexander folder and pull out the Alex.exe and put it in your EB RTW directory. Then just follow the instructions as usual.

I'm going to try out EB. I usually go by the whole "newest is better" so I will go with EB on alex.
A few questions:
1)The first page of this topic gives the directions on how to get EB to work with Alex. One of the last intructions is to change the target line. Near there is a link for the EB.exe download and a button to click that says "More..". When I click that button I then see to more steps that has us actually editing/changing files. I'm confused as to what this is actually for, do we actually have to do that? Step 6/last-step in the install instructions just says we need to change the target line, so what are these extra 2 steps?
2)I have RTW gold, but I don't think that will be a problem. I just follow the install directions from the 1st page but with my gold disc, correct? (Meaning BI will automatically be installed too and this shouldn't create any problems with EB on Alex?)
3)I was still trying to figure out which is better, EB on BI or alex. My main question is: does running EB on alex use any of the BI features (swimming, shieldwall, schiltrom, loyalty, religion, night battles etc)?
4)Does the minmods still work with this mod, specifically the water mod that makes the water look like the vanilla version and the force diplomacy mod?

1- more button refer to ''EB-ALEX STEP-BY-STEP START!'' its in the main post, but the target line set you need to change anyway. If you download files you are ok just change target line.
2- as long as you have alexander installed and ALX.exe IN your RTW folder you are okej.
3- Difference with Alx and BI is vast AI wise in favour to Alx.exe, Alexander does not support: swimming, shieldwall, schiltrom, loyalty, religion - it doeas support night battles, AI naval invasions (wich on BI simply not work well etc) - see the main post for screen shots pls.

I have installed the EAEM files with the fixes. I can start the game without problems, but if I want to start a new campaign or load one of my old savegames, the game crushes to desktop. Does anyone know what could cause this problem?
Edit: Ok, new installation of EB and EAEM solved the Problem :). Maybe there had been some issues with another minimod or something like that.

1) You don't need to worry about the step-by-step section. Just change the target line and download EAEM if you want to play the mod.

2)I really don't like the sea in EB. For some reason it just makes the whole map hard on my eyes and imo makes the graphics of RTW look bad. It is almost like too much to see, if you know what I mean. It actually stops me from playing the game. Will the mod to make ocean the same as in vanilla work with yours? If you think it will work, any special instructions that I should follow?
3)Will the force diplomacy mod work with yours? If so, any special instructions that I should follow?
4)This one is much less important, but do you think the darth mod will work with yours?
5)If you think they will work, should I install them after your mod install or before?

I believe their late bodyguard tanks are enabled after reforms, not sure when but for sure In Eaem there are many from the start to keep game realistic.

1)I extracted the fixes into the RTW folder, which you said to do above. It didn't ask me to replace anything so I am assuming that that was the wrong thing to do.
I deleted the fixes folder that the extraction created in the RTW folder and I'm going to reextract into another folder and then copy-paste the files in the fixes folder to the folder that it is represented by in the actual RTW folder. Is this the correct thing to do?
2)Step 5 talks about EAEM, should it be EAEB? If not, what does EAEM stand for?
3)The steps to change the target line of the "shortcut" refer to what "shortcut"? I got no shortcut on install. In program menu I have a few options/icons to start it. By running trivial scrip, by running single player -through trivial script or by an icon that says Run Europa Barbarorum. Are you saying change the Run Europa Barbarorum icon target line? Also when that is changed, can we still run EB through trivial script? Or do we have to change another target line to use it through trivial script?

I read it many times. I'm going to have to go with lionhard on this subject. Although it gives you the major details, it is not specific enough. Escpecially for people that are new to this stuff.
It tells you the right order and files, but doesn't give you the specifics for anything.
I suggest for steps 1-4 you give the link to the following, https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80270, with also saying to install Alexander before 1.1 or something like that.
For steps 5-6, you should mention more about what you do after dl. I installed step 5 in RTW folder, which i hope is correct. Step 5a, I extracted in a folder then manually copy-pasted items to the correct RTW folder. Which I can only hope is the "correct" way to do it. Step 6 is confusing, especially since it is mixed with "Step by Step" stuff. It also doesn't talk about what actual shortcut.
Can you please answer my #1 question from the last post, at the least. That is my biggest worry from all of this, that I'm not suppost to copy-paste.
4) I know you said this EAEB is all I need. But do you have a list of all the extras in it? For example, you said that it uses darth formations, but I didn't see that mentioned on the first page.
5) Is there anyway to know forsure that it is working correctly. That EAEB is installed, along with the fixes? For example, should CTDs be very rare, some sort of icon I should look for that should show me it is working, a version number, a certain display at start, etc?
Lastly, I just want to make clear that the above is just to try to understand EAEB better and to make sure it works properly. I'm a detail oriented person, as are many that play this game.

Without more anwers to questions, I can only assume I did it right.
Something that I noticed right away was that the old style sea is in place, rather than the EB sea graphics. I much prefer it this way, but I'm not for sure if you intended this or not because the pics at the first page for sea battles show the EB sea graphics. Which should it look like/did you intend to use?
The mod_1.pak file in the fixes file that I unzipped to copy-paste (for fixes) is the probable cause of the sea looking the way it does. If I delete that file in EB/data, will the sea then look like the EB sea graphic style sea?

1. Install Rome Total War + 1,3 and 1,5 patches.
2. Install Alexander expansion or extract the Alx.exe file only into your RTW folder.
3. Install EB 11 and EB 12.
4. EB fixes.
a) To play EB with only improved engine you need use

b) If you want to play full modification you need to use

5a. EAEM fixes.
6. Change the target line of EB.exe single player.
That is all you need to know to install the mod or use Alx.exe :idea2:

Maksimus, some of us are slower than others :(. Btw, my main question was a simple yes/no question. But I wont complain/argue with you, it is a great mod after all :).
So for any others that might want to help me:
I'd just hate to be playing for days and then get a CTD because I messed up with copy-pasting the fixes.
I'm slightly unsure about step 5a. Did I do right by unzipping the fixes file in a temp folder, then copy-pasting each file to the corresponding folder in my RTW\EB\data folder?

I've been playing it a little and it seems very nice. But the campaign map is laggy/choppy. It works smooth in the campaign for awhile, then goes choppy again for awhile, then goes smooth again.
Xp, 2 gigs, 7950 gx2, fx-55.
I don't think its a hardware issue, considering it works smooth for awhile before its choppy, then goes smooth again. Probably software. Its playable, unless it gets worse as my empire gets bigger, but it is annoying as it takes longer to move/select things. Any known issues with this? Any ideas?

I apologize ahead of time if this has already been asked; I've installed everything in for alexander eB. It starts up fine, however, upon me trying to begin (that is click on the EB campaign button in single player) a in-game window pops up saying to select an option on the screen, as if It is not recognizing that command. can anyone help me? have I installed it incorrectly? I had installed this on my previous computer just fine, its an amazing mod.

I intalled the file in a special folder to view contents, and found chinese and Indian units in there. does that mean that a new faction(s) will replace some of the old ones?

Update on my above problem:
It seems to happen when I move a unit past its full movement point radius (so you see red/blue/yellow movement lines). I have no idea why this happens or how to fix it from happening in the first place. But if I move a unit outside of a city, the problem is gone.
If anyone out there knows why this happens or how to do a more permanent fix, please enlighten me.

I'm noticing that the AI doesn't expand. Most cities just have stacks that don't even move from one turn to the other. So is the AI script not working right? Perhaps they move once in awhile but can't expand because each rebel settlement is loaded with stacks of elite troops that keep retraining when depleted. I'm over 20 years into the game and there has been zero expantion by the campaign AI. Is this normal? I looked at the past few pages in this thread and it seems others have mentioned a similar problem.
Maksimus is there a problem with this mod or is it a feature of the game? I remember back in the day when the makers of RTW said that the save-reload-siege-bug was a "feature", :). Maybe it is a feature, I'm just at a loss as to why. Will the AI eventually expand? What should it look like after about 50 years? Why hasn't carthage even attacked me with all their stacks? I'm playing as Rome on VH/M.
Can "rebel" factions retrain units too? If they can, stopping them from being able to would help the other AI factions expand. Is there anyway to mod it so that the rebels can't retrain? As it is, I don't see how another AI faction could even conquer a city that has 2 stacks of elite "rebel" troops that retrain right after a battle. This must be why there is no expantion.

@ plastictree: It does seem to be a great mod. Its like a huge mod-pack for alex with a lot of nice tweaks/features. But I'm also at a loss as to why the AI doesn't expand. I'm not for sure how I feel about the AI not expanding, because I do like a slow game. But only fighting rebels and tiny factions probably will cause me not to play this mod again. I just don't know yet. Maybe I'll go extremely slow and enjoy the civ-like building. But in another 20-40 years, if there still isn't some AI expantion, I'm moving on to another mod.
It was a challenging game especially in the beginning but there were a few annoyances. I never got attacked much and that for each city there is one full stack outside the wall that never moves (even after the city is taken by holding the town center for example). Oh and the rebels never attacked any city in my game.

im having the same problem. being that the factions dont actually expand due to the pure ownage that the rebels are. could you tell me how to mod the game so that the rebels are weaker? my most difficult battles were against the rebels as well and i usually fight them around 2 times before i actually beat them. its not really that fun fighting rebels over and over. i actually started to miss fighting other factions.

I think, the AI could not conquer a rebel settlement because of the big stacks in there.
I noticed several attacks (I used toggle_fow to look at the AI), but very few succeded.
In my sweboz game, I conquerd northeastern euope in 40 years(!) without getting in contact with any other faction. That was quite boring^^. So I decided to play EB without this modification, also because the Building times were much too hardcore for me (16 rounds for the first tier of barracks, 36 rounds for the tier 1 government building). I mean, if the AI can not expand, the game is ridiculous easy^^
@Chinese Units:
There are three or four stacks of new chinese units (rebelfaction) around the area of sulek at the eastern end of the map.
I have a short term solution for the static AI, however this will require you to start a new campaign again. :sweatdrop: :embarassed:
How to allow the AI factions to expand naturally within the first 10 years.
1. Make a back-up for descr_stat found in ......RTW/EB/data/world/campaign/imperial_campaign/descr_strat.
2. Edit descr_strat with notepad ++ (This is recommended because plain notepad is very risky)
-increase heavily the starting stacks of the AI factions that you will not play and increase their money up to 1 million or less (except Arche Seleukia, since they invade like crazy later on ).
(don't worry since 1 million depletes very fast for the AI factions.)
- In my opinion, the very large navy of some factions prevents them from developing armies and cities, you need to delete them until they only 1 to 3 ships left. (AI doesn't know how to disband them anyway :whip:)
- increase the starting experience of the AI factions armies from 0 to 9 (People will disagree with me, but the rebels they encounter are really strong. And if they are beaten by the rebels, they will be discouraged and stopped expanding. :furious3:)
- Reduce and weaken most of the starting armies of only the "nearest" rebel town/cities that they will conquer. So that they will continue to expand. (not all)
- Increase also rebel spawn rate and brigand spawn rate to 100 to prevent them from popping all the time.
Optional: Want a very fast expansion for the first few turns?
3. Make a back-up of descr_character in ...........EB/data/descr_character
4. Edit descr_character and change the movement points from 80 to 100 or more, this will allow the AI to invade a few territories in the first 3 turns.
What I noticed:
- Many factions have conquered at least 1 to 2 settlements for the first 3 turns. :yes:
- Many factions have already a descent nation after 263 B.C
+Saba conquered 5 settlements
+Casse conquered 4 settlements
+Germany conquered 4 settlements (and so on..................)
- Rome frequently use it's ships in transporting its armies.
note: AI will return to slow expansion again after a decade or more

Eb is designed to last from 272bc to 14ad, that is 286 years which is 1144 turns, and its advised to play on very hard Campaign. 40-60 years is not a full campaign :juggle2:

Once again, thanks for answering my questions.
I did toggle_fow for 50 years, 200 turns. Then did toggle_fow again, the map looked the same as it did 50 years before. "Maybe" one or two cities (at the most) changed hands. There was pretty much zero AI movement and expantion.
I don't see how that would change much in another 800 turns, except waste my time. Really, I don't know how you can say that the AI will expand when each rebel city has two full stacks of elite troops that retrain after attacked.
Sure, I'll expand. But how is that fun to only fight against the rebels?

I think part of the problem is that I'm almost certain English isn't your first language. Really, all I meant to do was inform you about a major flaw in your game (imo). Granted there is much to like about your mod, but most of that you can also get with other mods.
I actually kind of thought you were the one highjacking many other threads "advertising" this mod. I just wanted to point out what many players of this mod have told you. The AI doesn't expand well, period. All you end up doing is fighting rebel elite stacks, that just sit on the campaign map. When you actually make it to another factions land, all their stacks also pretty much just sit around their cities.
It's just that I noticed that the AI doesn't use all those extra troops that you gave it. More doesn't always mean "better". In fact, sometimes it is "worse".
Remember, this was all just constructive critism about this mod. I'll leave it at that and move one.

Passive A.I. is problem for some people with vanilla EB as well. It seems to be rare, but I've recall a couple of complaints about it. Apart from those cases where the player had not activated the script, there was no explanation.
Anyway, I agree we should end this discussion here.

Passive A.I. come's when players play passive also, in Alx.exe its triggered by player passive game or no expansion sometime, we even had players that refused to expand until they saw AI expand :book:
Also, when note is made at some point that AI is passive, you dont need to reply over again in many more replies noting the same thing. This mod had tens of thousands of downloads in its history and only few had remarks :juggle2:

My campaign works well. But as you know to make AI aggressive we have added many scripts and submods. But waiting for AI modding on the eve of EB2 is my best choice at the moment.

My campaign works well. But as you know to make AI aggressive we have added many scripts and submods. But waiting for AI modding on the eve of EB2 is my best choice at the moment.

I followed your directions for 1.2 Mini Mod Pack 3.1 and my map also looks similar to yours. The AI is expanding nicely.
for installation process; I followed EB 1.1 > 1.2 > official fixes > minimod pack > LZ3's script adaptation > phalanx mod > RS textures mod > naval strat mod > Lysander's sihunet formations adaptations > EOM 2.1b V.T. Marvin's Adaptation

some says the movement points irritates some because AI is vanquishing rebel cities and penetrates deep into the player territory which I like very much :laugh4:
if you find AI too expansionist just reduce the movement point in descr_char.txt in the data and SP backup folders of EB my default is 260,
EB default is 80. One day I try 500 - 600 just for fun :laugh4:

Is less about expansion and more that I'd argue that your campaign AI is broken. If you actually sit and play a campaign for awhile, it becomes obvious. I'm sure many would agree with me on this. And by reading many many post about this issue in this thread, it seems the problem has been around for awhile.
The mod has some nice "eye" candy and it will take awhile to notice the problem, but in the end, the truth is you stunted your campaign AI too much. All the rebel cities are just too strong.
Also, I don't see how this mod can have much to do with "realism" when all the cities on the map are loaded with 2 stacks of elite troops.

Yeah, this part can be confusing.
The key is to not use trivial script to open it. Look for the actual alex.exe (RomeTW-ALX) and make a shortcut for it. Put that shortcut on your desktop. Then in the properties of that shortcut, make sure the end of the "target" line, looks like the following (the bold part is what you will need to cut and past to the end of the target line):
"this is the path to where you installed RTW and Alexander and EB and all patches\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander
You will also find that alex.exe (RomeTW-ALX) file in the above "path".

Maksimus. I just want to ask a minor nitpick about Night battle, the starting Character on my campaign that has night battle traits does capable of night battles, but after the first generation dies out, there was no more characters capable to do the night battles. What should I do, other than manually give that trait via console?

Did you play eb vanilla or EAEM mod?
EB Vanilla, with some minor nitpick (modified some values and unit stats) then port to your Alexander EB installation.

in vanilla eb I didnt edit multiple traits so that night battle capability would be accessible fairly easy.
In Eaem they should be easier to get :yes:

Hello!
I have a question about installation. As I understood, I can just copy Alex.exe without installing Alex TW whole. Is it true? And if I install EAEM do I need to install whole Alex TW?
And when I install patches should I install 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.5 or just 1.3 1.5? And is it important to install all that patches? (I realized that I Played EB without patches 1.3 and 1.5 before)

Well, I faced one problem with the patches.I have read on the official TW site that 1.3 is regionally depend. But I live in Russia and I run official Russian license localization. And it refuse installing 1.3. :wall: If I install BI my RTW will be 1.3, but I can’t install 1.6 on same unknown reasons, that is why Vanilla would be 1.3 only. What should I do?

you need 1.3 to install 1.5 and only then you can install alexander and for that matter play the mod.
Try to instal 1.3 then 1.5 and then alexander

Are using a Russian or an English patch? Try the one your are not using. Or find an international version. It seems unlikely, but it's worth a shot.
Edit: have you de-installed R:TW at this computer before? IIRC there was a problem with the 1.5 registry entry not being deleted properly so you couldn't patch it after reinstalling. If this is the case, you could try de-installing and deleting the registry entry with a freeware Reg-edit program (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=59901).

In fact there is no Russian patch or exe at all. The company that has license to produce R: TW in Russia uses English version. They just translated it. I dunno if such word exists in English, but in Russia we call it localization. I read that I need English patch. My exe is English-English not English-US.
I can update Vanilla to 1.3 only with BI (localization too). But then I cant update to 1.6. When I deleted BI I "managed" to install 1.5, but during installation it said that old descr_items not found. Installation terminated. Now I have 1.5 written on exe but Alex still refused to install, coz it said I need 1.5 or 1.6 :wall:
