Hello!

I have been lurking for some time and have finally decided to post. Anyway, I play EB on Alx.exe using EAEM, and have a few questions.

1st I can't seem to find a description of things that were actually changed in EAEM, does such a list exist, and where could one find it?

2nd is EAEM compatible with the Mini-mod and other unofficial mods?

3rd is EAEM utilizing something similar to Victory conditions mod?

Cheers for the informative reply. I found some of the info on other RTW forum. Turns out I'm not playing with EAEM, only RTW.exe. Well, you live - you learn.

If you're getting the "baitaz" error after installing this you're probably installing it over Maksimus's alexander mod (or some other mod). The two are incompatible. Install EAEM on a _clean_ and _fixed_ install of EB 1.2.

hello,

I know there's no stupid questions. Only stupid people asking.
So here's my problem :

I'm getting tired of reading thousands of threats and still, I can't figure out how to use alex.exe.

I've downloaded this mod, I only want to use the engine. Where should I put it, I mean in wich folder exactly?
I also read that you can use "alex.exe" just by switching with "Rome-total war.exe" shortcuts. Simple. Oh, well, my desktop shortcut shows something totally different :
"C:\Program Files\Rome - Total War\EBTrivialScript\EBTrivialScript.exe" -s ebconfig.xml -runeb -type "Single Player"
I'm already using a few mods (the mini mods pack and the vanilla sea).
Getiing tired of trying...

@bigstape - you got generic error reinstall the mod of make the file that is missing just so that system can scan it, it wont be used ingame.

@Salahedin - if you are using minimod pack, you should have alx.exe already? Its based on this engine.
if not then just download this http://www.zshare.net/download/51697518abdc7e31/ and change the target line

"<drive letter>:\<directory path you've installed RTW into>\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander

First of all happy Xmas. I had no problem playing EB on Alex exe. But recently I unistalled EB and reinstalled it again, but one problem emerged, all my characters in my prevous save game had their congomen changed, for example one Publius C. Scipio became Publius Licinus Lucullus. Also almost all of my characters have the Allied general trait and the imposter trait. Now I can't have any more magisters as long as new characters became adults or are available for marriages etc. Have others had this same problem or something similar and I dont thing that there is a way to fix this problem.

That occurs when you have modded the traits. Changes in that file are not save-game compatible: the only way to repair your game is by restoring the original trait file.

For those wanting to try using Alex engine, don't forget to either install all of Alex or not forget the San file. The Alex engine itself is not enough; You need the San file.

I used several units from others mod, notably among them the various skins of the Italic allies in RTR, but I never changed the trait file. This error is appearing every time I quit EB, something of a script error in the EBBS trait line or something, and this after I reinstalled EB because I messed up the Massilian Hoplites sprites. But again I never modified the EBBS traits.

Strange. You need to modify the trait file to use Alex.exe, don't you? Is it possible it was modified differently when you reinstalled EB? Or perhaps you are using a rtw.exe save game on Alex.exe or vica versa?

I don't think this is script related: that does not affect already-existing traits in the save-game.

Hey, guys, someone help me. The buildings take to many turns to be finished in this "mod mod", even the simplest ones! Some take 40 turns... this is crazy! The game progress becomes very slow in this way... Haven't any form to restore the previous building time, the vanilla EB one? Any mod? Any .txt edit? This was meant to be this way?

Only those commanders with the night fighter trait can fight during the night. Also, alt-tab to check if you are indeed running Alex and not RTW.

I can start the Alex mod but the game sometimes freeze before a campaing or a battle starts. Someone knows anything about it? I think I did all the installation correctly.

Hi.

I am having a bit of a problem with the Alex engine. All my family members are Immortal.
I tried adding the Immortal trait stuff to the files(as written in the first post) but they still don't die.

Any idea what I should do here?

Edit: nevermind, seems to be working, faction leader died peacefully aged 95:)

Try installing EB 1.2 again, then install the EB 1.2 fixes, which are NOT on the front page of this thread.
Then, install EAEM (if you want to play the EAEM mod), NOT ALX engine files. Then install EAEM fixes. Then make your shortcut.

EAEM fixes placed in EB/Data folder
Shortcut made

I then loaded ALX EB, which worked fine. I started a campaign and all.
But then, I went to EB Configuration and EB Preferences and applied a few changes.
When I started EB Single Player after I did that, it wouldn't start, and the problem again...

Is changing Configuration and Preferences the cause of this?

P.S I don't think this is at all related, but I am running EBALX.exe off a crack due to a misplacement of my CD :dizzy2:

Hi again. Only a simple question: How can i quit the population growing limit in the cities? Are you using "City Mod"?. I would prefer playing without that limitation.

mod doesnt use City mod, but has various limits to different regions, much more complex. You can change that if you know how the resources work, then you edit them or remove from map and edb.

Well, I reinstalled everything but the game still freezes before a load. This happens only sometimes but is very common here. Freezes befora a campaign start, before a game load, before or after a battle... This didnt happen in vanilla TW and common EB.

EB Alex have a specific forum for support?

Weird. I did nothing and the game runs perfectly fine now... well, good to me!

I think that editing the files with Notepad++ solve the problem even if some of the texts written in step-by-step were already there and I just wrote them a second time.

What difficulty do you recommend? I mean Medium/Medium, Hard/Medium, VH/Hard?



I would play EAEM but it is just too lengthy. The buildings take ages to construct, and enemy always has full stack!

I also think this is a problem...

I would personally like to play EAEM just to try something new and for the challenge.
However, I seem to get WAY more lag on EAEM than normal EB or even EB with ALX.engine... Can someone please explain to me why this is and if there is anything I can do to reduce it??

Laging here too but only a little. I think it's because the graphics are much better in EAEM. Put only the units in the max and the vegetation in medium (no paperlike trees). Lag slightly here, but the visuals in this mod makes me smile. :)

Only the building time and the rebels full stacks make me sad... :(

it is a bit more heavy because EAEM has some advanced campaign and battle features, night battles also. I used RS campaign map textures and mini mob for campaign map detailed ships and vagons on roads, also, campaing map armies are much more detailed, solo armies and generals have more detail model and spear, shield and sword in hand etc.

as for the changing of region city caps, i suggest you go to TW center or here if possible to modding guide's.

Why the walls of Vindelicoppidos are "Western Greek" class and not barbarian? I've seen more cities with this "problem" like Ak-Ink,Burdigala,etc.

its intentional, many cities had strong stone walls and were under Greek-Dacian-Far East or Chinese influence, not as near as barbaric as German and Gaul faction's at that time, but even they had stone walls in certain cities.

When I play with alex.exe and if I play with lower resolution, the game was windowed. Why? Only when i set max resolution, the game was maximise. I am confuse.

Make sure your shortcut reads "...\rometw-alx.exe -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander" (without quotes). Also make sure trivial script is turned to Single Player when playing campaign (Start > Programs > EB > Configuration > choose Single Player in the drop-down menu and click Save & Exit).

Ok, i find problem. Those -ne on the end are the problem. Whene i delete it alex.exe work fine. But what it means, that -ne?

That would ruin balance as other mods have other stat baselines than EB. If you mean you wish to replace the models of the units, then that would be a good idea (as you would still have the same, balanced EB stats). Although, admittedly, EAEM does contain different recruitment/upkeep costs. EAEM also contains different attack/defence stats than vanilla EB?

I'd like to say that I've also been experiencing the "generic ship baitaz" problem, I've tried completely wiping my computer of all RTW/EB/EAEM files and re-installing it, but when I try to run it, it comes up with the same error. Help please, I already tried re-installing the game.

How I re-installed it:
RTW 1.0
RTW 1.3, 1.5 Patches
Alexander Expansion
EB 1.2 Fixes
EAEM.exe installed into RTW folder
EAEM fixes placed in Data folder
Changed target line of EB Single Player to "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander

I execute EB Single Player, it again returns the message:
Script Error in eb/data/export_descr_unit.txt, at line 140, column 33.
Could not find soldier battle model for unit type "generic ship baitaz"

Any advice?

EDIT: I'm also running Windows Vista, if that may be a problem. UAC is ON.

It seems the problem was indeed the operation system (Vista). When I ran as Administrator it worked, although I have no idea why it would restrict operations in Program Files.

EDIT: Nope, it's broken again.

LAMBDA, I realized that if no changes are made to the Trivial Script (For example ticking boxes like Windowed Mode) and if no changes are made to the command line other than specified in the instructions, EAEM should work fine.

However, the overwhelming amount of lag on this compared to Vanilla EB put me off.
Not Maksimus' fault, but my terrible video card.

@LAMBDA, that is generic error please reinstall your RTW and EB.
@Gaiscedach, I am sorry but I never adopted Triv Script for Eaem, its a html i didnt want to bother with :idea2:

I have spent over three hours trying in vain to make this mod work. The instructions on the first page of this thread are unclear, jumbled, and do not help users to actually get things running. Does anyone have actual instructions, phrased in a manner that make some sort of sense? If I'm making a tomato sandwich, you can't simply tell me "use the tomato and the bread" and expect that I'll know what you mean. I tried searching this thread for specifics, but the results are not clearly indicated and seem to point to every page. I've also tried scanning the pages one after the other, but it seems that I'm not privy to the secret information of how to simply get this mod running.

These are the instructions for this mod, with various other details scattered about randomly across the first post of this thread:

"a) To play EB with only improved engine you need use
5. ALX engine files. What does this mean? "Use?" How?

b) If you want to play full modification you need to use
5. EAEM files.
5a. EAEM fixes. What does "use" mean? Do I drop them on my desktop and start playing? Where are the instructions of how to "use" these files? Do I install these files in an independent directory? In the "RTW" directory? In the "EB" directory? Please be clear!

6. Change the target line of EB.exe single player. I did change it - I wrote "alright, now I've changed it" in the target line, but it didn't work. Problems?

I don`t claim to be an expert on the subject, but I`ll try to address the issues you have here.

a) I haven`t tried running the improved engine myself, instead opting for the full modification (which I consider far superior), but I believe that if you only wanted to experience the benefits of the ALX engine files themselves, you would include the ALX engine files within the Rome: Total War directory, which would be utilized when EB 1.2 runs.

b) Step by step tut on running EAEM:
1) Have clean Rome: Total War, with Alexander expansion installed and then EB1.2 installed with fixes (i assume you know how)
2) Download eaem.exe
3) Run eaem.exe, install files in RTW directory.
4) Download fixes
5) Merge the `data` file you get as fixes in the " (your directory)..../Rome: Total War/EB/data" area
6) Change the EB Single-Player.exe`s target line by right-clicking, selecting Properties and then replacing only the `Target` line with this:
"(your directory).../Rome:Total War/RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander
7) Make sure your rometw-alx.exe is where it`s supposed to be, and double-click the EB Single-Player to play :)

The engine modification and the full modification (called EAEM) are separate things, they are not to be executed in conjunction to each other.

PS: I agree with you, the instructions and description concerning this mod is sadly lacking; there is practically no information on how much they had modified EB vanilla and the instructions are not that straightforward. Keep in mind, however, that many of the top EB contributors originate from areas in Europe where they would have a weaker command of English than others, making it difficult to explain their modifications properly.

OH and look everyone is still having trouble reading the piss poor instructions on how to install it. Do the mod a favour and some 1 rewrite instructions FFS!

LOL I will write something up (and make an instructional video) when I find time. I may or may not have time sometimes on or after Tuesday of this week. I've installed the Alex engine mod for EB (as well as EAEM) and every time I have been successful. When I've had problems I've sorted them out. I spent a few posts here some while back, pages in the 40s or 50s, can't remember. People constantly have problems but it should not be so difficult. I'll keep you all updated if and when I make my instructionals.

Maybe a full sophisticated write up of how to install the 2 different mods you propose, rather than short descriptions, dont get me wrong im ok with it now, but im only going off the fact that everytime i look at the Alex EB thread some 1 is always struggeling to install it. To a casual modder it is def easier but as i can say my self i struggled when first installing it :S

first time i got internet up I have been playing RTW for 2 years already. then i got too se mods for the 1st time. Even tho I modded my RTW I had no idea how to install any mod untill i spent some more times at the forums, and learend what means what in a sence that will help me understand mods.
If anyone wanna make more simple guied pls post here ill add on main pate.

Only easier thing would be if I would have just made installer with full RTW and Alex there already but moddes- and that illegal.

Hey there!

I installed your sub-mod according to the instructions you and the people on the forum here gave and still have a problem to run a campaign.

Here´s what I did:
Installed...
...R:TW (ver 1.5)
...R:TW Alex
...EB 1.1 + 1.2 patch + 1.2 fixes
...EAEM files
and changed the link to run the game.

It starts properly but when I try to start a single player game a box appears with the message:"please select an item from the list."
Don´t know what I should have done wrong so I would be glad if you guys could help me out.

Check your target line and make sure your Alexander Single Campaign can start. If it still say *chose item from the list* than exe is not the right one

The Alexander Expansion still works without problems. But if I start EB with EAEM I can´t start a campaign because the message still appears (please select an item from the list). If it´s not
the ALX.exe, which one is it instead?

This is what the target line in the EB.exe looks like by now: "C:\Programme\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander"
Should I modify the target line of the ALX.exe as well?

Possibly EB team updated soemthing did you overwrite EAEM files with EB files ??? if so try overwire it back with eaem files again. If not I really cant help you.

Hello guys. I installed everything wright to play EB on only Alex.exe, but i just wonder when i look for NO CD alex.exe, some of theme have file "descr_model_battle" and i read somewhere that i must "copy paste" that file too if i want that ewerything work proper. Is that true, what that file do?

yes, i was about to post up my savegame file but.... reinstalled EB and forgot... rtard indeed.

reason for reinstalling though was CTD when i tried to run minimod pack 3.1 for alex.exe. apparently it was compatible. not for me. any input?

edit: occurred to me that it will probably only work with the engine only mod and not the eaem.exe mod. shame.

I also get this error "Destroying a TEXTURE that was already destroyed break_texture=1047359412".....Though not all the time....only sometimes occasionally....& yes I have only installed EAEM on a fresh install of EB....The only extra thing that i added is force diplomacy minimod....& there's 1 more minor bug...
Sometimes enemies armies get stuck near their cities with no moves & they don't move at all in their respective turns....Why does this happen ????

& this is not a game flaw but sort of slight prob.... As u start with a big army & huge corrupt cities, your treasury goes for a toss & within the 1st few turns it becomes -ve....had 2 resort 2 add money cheat just 2 keep my finances solvent until u capture a couple of enemy cities.......

Well these are the only flaws in this otherwise insanely cool mod.....Keep up the good work.....Thank you !!!!!

EDIT (addition): the first page step-by-step startup, something about changing export_descr_character_traits.txt and inserting something about immortality. what is that? effects when added/not added?? is it essential?? the purpose and effects are not clear.


obv the game is designed to flow slowly over time, which has its ups and downs, good and bad aspects. it is good that changes don't make themselves apparent so swiftly yet it takes a llooooooong time to experiment with it's nuances.

Ok, I am just now making a coffe break.. And I must say I am amaized!!!
And not just about AI! I am so amaized with my EB 1 stability and fast-fllow!

The campaign and battle game run MUCH, MUCH faster! they are stable.. I could svear that my vanilla RTW witho no patches runs just a bit sllower than this! Realy.. I had no CTDs at all by now and I play on VH and fight couple of battles per turn -- like, In my EB 1 based on RTW.exe I had to have atleast 1 CTD after some battle.. but it seems that ALEX.exe is moch mouch better then we all think!

Let's say.. I never played Alex vanilla, but I am sure that 90% of people here did not.. so they could not know what Alex is - it is many times better that RTW and Bi.. the stability and preformance....

For example... I have A high-end system ..Cor2Duo.. ASus8800gst 2 gigs of Geil ultar ram on 800- so I PLAY ON MAX settings all the time... AND you know what! - The first time I had NO STUDS or --sloows at all are now with Alex.exe
Belive me..I palyed just today with my Rtw.exe and nothing changed on my PC since!

AND ABOUT DIPLOMACY! I belive that a good sign is - I took Pella and Demetrias in my first turn! You know .. with elephant on VH.. so then in my next turn I send a diplomat in
Corintos to ask Ceasfire, Trade Rights, saying I will attack and I ask for 5000 minaiI! AND THEY SAID YES! - I think that is very good, in EB 1 based on RTW you could never get that aggrement even if they have only one city left!
That is definetly better Diplomacy! ANd AGonatas sailed somwere!

there are no summed up list of changes, unfortunately i would not even remember every single thing i did, but ya - only capitols and some big cities (that would be big in the future) can go large and huge.

about 1st page, its noted that its manually changes, you wont believe just how many new mods came out after Alx EB, literaly, everyone that wants to work with Alx.exe comes to read my posts here or on TWC so they could implement the exe in there mod.

hihi, yes its Eaem tweaks, engine stays the same open for others to mod etc etc.

there were some balance issues.. mines.. ya mines made a mess. I havent double checked mines and resources very well in the past. Final outcome was that regions can have mines, and pretty big ones as well, but they dont all have resources. Mines made hard disbalance on strategic planning ground, where player would invest alot of money and army, effort, won heroic battles, and then ends up with a settlement that has big mine but no resource and therefor the money he invested wont come back.

some army balance issues as well etc.

1)- Pls try 2 correct the lack of mobility of army & the loading screen CTD issue...(I used 2 get these even when i didn't put force diplomacy)..
2)- If u can than try 2 implement the minimods available here for alex.exe such as Phalanx Mod, City Mod, Spoils of Victory etc. :book:

Spoils of Victory are included in Eaem.
As for all other minimods you have mentioned that include EDU and Maps, i have to say not only that 'such kind of changes are included' but they are much more advanced and developed, especialy EDU changes etc

I never misuse Force Diplomacy 'cause that would spoil the game...I instead use it for getting Trade Rights & Map Information in return of Map Information but the stubborn AI doesn't wish 2 negotiate....Do fix this minor issue & not include force diplomacy.....That'll be fine.....

By the way, will the new version of EAEM be save game compatible with previous one ???????

edit: And, will the descr_strat of previous EAEM be compatible ?????? I found in my macedonian campaign that the Rhodian FM of KH starts in the city of Sparta while Spartan FM of KH starts in Rhodes....I also modified my descr_strat & removed elite units from rebel armies such as Hetairoi....& removed the heavy cavalry from KH which they should never have......

Hmmm.. i will give you my take on how much historic Eaem is, shortly, its much more historic than Vanilla EB and + it adds much more game fun balance.
Why?
Few examples are; EB devs deliberately (i think that they have votes when they make some strategic changes or something) making settlements under developed so that the player would have more fun building etc (which is not historical). Also, they have deliberately underpowered much of Lationo-Hellenic units and their Cavalry + Elephants (which is not historic and i have had that proven by real horsemen and facts), and have seriously overpowered much of Germano-Celtic factions units such as infantry and slingers. Dacians are represented as underdeveloped in infrastructure as the Celts (where as they were much more advanced and had paved roads, stones walls, buildings, and great palaces etc).

And to the point of KH and their units hmmm, at that time the Successor units and armies were literally passing from king to king when they felt there will be victory, alot of Antigonos army simply just passed to Pyrr, and alot of Greeks from abroad were fighting as mercenaries and in macedon style, cavalry nobles that were from other parts of todays greece or Asia Minor also did fight for different sides.
Note here that KH faction neve really had existed, so you are actually having much deeper game experience realising how mixed it was, ......... army of Pyrr joined other armies after his death, and so did the units from italy he brought over with him. Something like Celts that were on Egypt side :)

Nope, I never removed the original Greek Heavy Cavalry from the KH lineup.....I just removed the Hetairoi from their lineup & also from the rebel states of Pergammnon & so on......I made Hetairoi an exclusive of Macedon, AS & Potolemoi......But as Maksimus says, maybe KH did field Hetairoi....but then again i m no historian...I primarily did it for balancing the armies.....I recomend that we make KH heavy cavalry comparable 2 other heavy cavalry's instead of giving them Hetairoi...Another issue with the cavalry is that in one of the battles, i was battling Epeiros & my Generals Bodyguard (macedon) flanked their hevy cavalry & attacked them...initially, they were dying like flies but after sometime my cavalry started to die very fast & i had to retreat...even though at the begining i had 88 Hetairoi & they had 55 or something...

but then there's the issue of your faction loosing its entire money in the first 6 turns or so.....thats why the EB team made it ahistorical....History should be mantained but not at the cost of gameplay.....& pls people pls don't fight at history 'cause at the core it is a game....its nigh-impossible to achieve total perfection as of today's technology......

Not entirely true. If the development team didn't listen to the players, the mod wouldn't be what it is today.

I havent said they entirely dont care. However, in example of cavalry and elephants EB vanilla is severally unhistorical and unrealistic, and there have been plenty of open discussions mostly on TWC that I participated where EB vanilla changes were suggested. However, nothing happened etc. This is just one out of many examples during the past years.

hi, you can not implement the allied legions in Eaem unless your replace the region resource (that gives it ability to be build in some settlement) from 1st Cohort to Allied legions etc. Eaem is using 1st Cohort Names in different Regions Rather than Allied legions. Eaem however has enabled regional units and I think some specific Celtic and Germanic units that should represent Allied legions.

Good question. I am 1 man army and I am stuck atm at modding cant figure how to set correct voice for units using Alx engine I just cant do it, the isntructions from TWC arent working for me.. so atm i am bit depressed - this will take some time.

just do your best modding. we will appreciate it. although admittedly there a few things that could be polished, that such a great mod was made with such a small team shows some real.... (cant think of a good enough word). i agree with many of your modifications as i was getting sick of flying through and conquering all of the continent in 20 years. it makes for more immersive gameplay.

Hey Max,

I don't think that your mod installed naval invasions for alexander.exe properly. I am not using EAEM, just the improved engine fixes. Playing as the Romans and Casse, I haven't seen a single naval invasion in over 40 years of campaign gameplay, and I was fighting Catharge!

Any particular reason for this? :(

Also, if your using vanilla EB you wont get much action overall as their default script is made for poor RTW engine and doesn't cope well with Alx.exe extensive AI.

But doesn't Alex.exe have BI's naval invasion scripts? I thought your fixes included that... or is it just for EAEM?

hmm Alex.exe and BI.exe and RTW.exe aren't open to modified, *exe's are only modified by the developers that made the original game. We that make mods can only edit *txt files, images.. pretty much everything that is not part of the *exe and that is not limited by the hard code of exe*. This said, Alx.exe had double more slots for models that you can implement compared to rtw and bi that can host twice less.

Alx.exe has its own AI naval use, but EB vanilla script is not coping with that well as it is designed for RTW (much older). In Eaem i have armies moving via ships often, but also, rebels have ships now as well.

100000 is not much in EAEM...Why ?? Let me give you my example....I started a campaign as Macedon (and i had the same amount) but a huge stacks of armies and Huge cities with lots of squalor...(If you develop a huge city on your own it takes time but it becomes your chief earning city...and if given at start it does the opposite..)....so you can imagine what happened in next two turns !!! I got bankrupt....And now, i have conquered the whole of Greece but still I have to be very careful with my treasury....I hope Maksimus fixes this issue in his next edition of EB....It was easier that way in original EB....

Maybe, that can be the solution to the financial issues....Try making the squalor a little less harsh on the player....But I've only played as Macedon so i don't know about other factions (but i guess factions like Rome, Epiros and other non barbarian factions would be having same issues)....

Hello,

I have one silly question. I have done exactly as written in instructions and I run the alex.exe (engine only, no EAEM), yet the game behaves like RTW EB - vanilla AI, no night battles etc. When I played Roma Surrectum II on alex.exe, the AI was comparatively different, so its not just my feeling I guess.
So, is this an issue, or should i keep trying to "reinstall"?

in RS the mod's have been testing the engine after I implemented it for EB and then they kept tweaking moded files to get a better result, also, there, script is not 'directing' the game in RTW.exe way, so the engine has more space to act etc. In EAEM i managed to get somwhere with AI but never enough XD

Hi people, I installed the engine only on my EB1.2 and i can't start a new campaign. When i click on the button it shows something like"YOU MUST SELECT A ITEM FROM THE LIST". I didn't change my EB Single Player link, the game started anyway (with the alexander little logo on the bottom at the startup loading screen) and the Night Battle feature working even with my previous BI saves.

The reason why i didn't change link is because simply ..I cant' !!
The original one was :
DESTINATION: D:\Programmi\EBTrivialScript\EBTrivialScript.exe -s ebconfig.xml -runeb -type "Single Player"
FROM: "D:\Programmi\Activision\Rome - Total War"

and if i try to follow instruction: <drive letter>:\<directory path you've installed RTW into>\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander

i get destination not valid cause of the space after the word ROME. I know that it might looks stupid but i can't change that link, but most important, is that the real reason why i can't start a new campaign?

I'm having a strange problem. I've followed all the steps to get the game working on the ALX.exe, and it does start up with ALX. The problem I've got is that the game crashes to desktop whenever I try to start a campaing.

It seems to be a problem with RomeTW-ALX.exe, I've tried reinstalling etc...

EDIT: Tried validating my instal with the .bat file, but that doesn't seem to work due to a Java error, so I'm updating Java now.
EDIT:EDIT: Seems JAva isn't being recognised. Now I'm stuck :(

I don't have this problem with EB on regular RomeTW.exe.

Hi guys New here long time TW player, New to EB as well though.

I'm having trrouble converting to EAEM. I wish to use all the available upgrades from this mod. I'm using a steam version of this game.I 've gotten EB 1.2 to work fine and i followed the instructions in the first post but cannot get it to work. I extracted the EAEM files and fixes into the EB folder in my RTW gold folder, and I'm pretty sure i put the first downloadable EAEM file in the OP in my RTW gold folder. With steam RTW gold and Alexander are installed in different folders.

Anyone have any info that oculd help me? Also is there a way to tell if my game is running EAEM or not?

Well, I seem to have sucessfully installed the Alexander engine files... I copied the "Data" folder you provided and pasted it inside my EB folder (merging the new data folder with the old one and telling the computer to "copy and replace" all duplicated files) and changed the target of my EB application to read, "C:\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander" and it seems to be working (EB starts up with the little "Alexander" logo at the problem and a new campaign starts without a hitch), but I still have to wonder wether or not it's working perfectly... Did I at least install the thing correctly, though?

If so, that would be a great help for me as I'm actually not presently interested in playing the EAEM mod (no offense), but someone in the "bug reports and technical help" section says that EAEM fixes the problem your Alex.exe engine files have of the accent-marked letters that are supposed to be used for some of the character traits for Sweboz FMs having turning into question marks...

I'm actually and since several months playing EB alex. Except a couple of CTD here and there gameplay is nice and I pushed my gameplay with the romans until 200BC.
But there is stg strange and from the very beginning. Each time I quit the game coming back to the windows screen, I get the folowing pop up message :

Generic error :

fatal error : animation event script
'eb/data/animations/engine/ram/eastram_idle.evt' not found.

I've been looking for some members having the same message/problem in this forum but I haven't found anything like mine.

I didn't know what's really wrong with caus this doesn't prevent me from playing.
However I remarked another quite strange thing. Despite my cities are well expanded I still didn't get the proper building to product war machines (like catapults and so on...). And I met ennemies using such machine ( each time old and unefficient stone throwers) only two times during more than 280 turns (once the carthaginians and the other were greeks ). I'm even suspecting that this machines were 'bought' as mercenaries and not 'built/produced' by those factions.
Could it be possible that this Generic/ fatal error prevents me from building war machines ?
I'm feeling a bit deezy and ill at ease with that caus I believe having correctly followed all the install instructions...
Does anybody have an idea about this ?

If you are using EAEM mod then this should not be the prob but in case of Romans it may be the issue with the reforms not being triggered correctly what mod you using? IF there are any other mods you use that may be a prob

I'm playing only with improved engine Alex.exe not EAEM.
For the rest my mod is EB 1.2 based on RTW 1.5 with Alexander expansion.
I'm on VISTA and my install directory for the mod is
"C:\Users\myname\RTW EB""

Curiously I got this message error after quiting when I played by clicking on short cuts like single player or the EB short cut icon I created and named EB Alex with the specific target executable :
"C:\Users\myname\RTW EB\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander.
I have even checked if there was something wrong with those shortcuts and for being sure not to making some failure I followed scrupulously a visual walkthrough on "Utube" and created a second shortcut named "EB Alex" through the Alexander executable changed in EB icon. The target of the executable is a bit different at the end like : "same directory as above" -show_err -nm -mod:eb -noalexander

With both short cuts the result is the same as I'm pretty able to play the game but when I quit it going back to Windows screen here comes the same message popup "Generic error..."
Oh I forgot to play through those short cuts is only possible with CD of Alexander extension .

I'v very recently realised that such error message DOESN'T APPEAR when playing EB through the starting EB configuration button "trivial script". I click on it then choose "play EB". Here comes no POPUP message after playing and getting back to Windows. But in this case I'm not sure that the game is with the improved Alex engine caus it is only playable with the RTW CD.

One last but important word to say : However and in ALL CASES when starting the game I got the same EB alex intro screen with "noalexander" written on flashing yellow at the bottom.

the target of the shortcut for this mod are :

(for classical RS).

or

C:\Users\sylvain\RS\RomeTW-ALX.exe -nm -show_err -mod -noalexander
(for RS with improved Alex engine).

the bug has nothing to do with engine files for sure, I was worried that you were using EAEM and that you could not get something to work or that there was a bug.

Hey guys,

Question: when I start a Romani campaign (H/M), cities like Rhegion and the Eleutheroi cities in the north all start with a full stack of 20 units. The Epeiros army at Taras is also a stack of 20 units. Is this normal for EAEB? I've checked Europa Barbarorum vids like on youtube, and it seems like Taras only has a small number of defending units there.

The game is playable, but I'm worried that something has gone wrong during installation. Also, Eleutheroi cities just keep building more units. By the time I get to the first city east of the Po region (into the Balkans) there's two stacks of eleutheroi waiting outside that city with a third stack inside. Is this intended?

HUGE issue, for me anyway. Not sure if this is a technical issue or a feature of the mod but my units no longer respond at all. They move and attack, but do not say anything except the general HOI when told to do something. No "perfectum est!" or "Mistophoroi hoplitayeeeeeee' that are music to my ears and add a lot to the game. When i click on them it is complete silence

fomalhaut, yeah i been having the problems with sounds as most modders, its not even tehnical prob but the issue of the engine, simply put - there are too many units in this mod and the engine does not cover all the sounds (there are too many units that should be using same sound)

vermin, you have to disband the fleet and start winning the cities.

Mhh, could we have a summary of the changes EAEM brings? So far i'm welcoming most of them, but would've been likeable to get a full list before installing it: CityMod-like forcing nearly all cities to Small Town, preventing most paved roads, is really, really nasty.
Also, subeshi archers having 9 base attack? I had a siege, and 2 units of those racked up 700 kills each... Oh, i was attacking.
Infinite Arrows can be problematic, also.

We dont have infinite arrows in the mod, but the fact is that nomad archer's of central Asia are the very finest, you can recruit them only as mercenary unless your in stepe's.

List of changes is vast, I dont think I will ever be able to update it, the mod is a master peace, many files have been edited for the sake of realism and most of the changes are there to balance out - what was in my opinion, unrealistic.

Fact is that arrows have a lethality of 1.0, so giving them an high attack has ridicolous consequences.
Still, i really appreciate your work in its totality, i just wanted to know if there was a "bullet point features", like there's for EB: not complete changes, just "Redone buildings, added CityMod, Redone balance, changed mercenaries recruitment".

I'm afraid to tell you that, but EAEM seems utterly broken. Year 220, most AI factions are still in their native borders, completely surrounded by stacks and stacks of eleutheroi. It appears that, except to me, Eleutheroi have lost less than 10 provinces at all. Actually, Casse is down to its last province, and Eleutheroi are going to take even that in a few turns, effectively killing the whole faction, with no other AI factions being involved.
My EDU is somewhat tweaked (buffs to heavy cavalry, -4 atk to light spear infantry, some cost increases to roman units), but i don't think this can explain more than half the world being ruled by eleutheroi in 220.
Can someone confirm a different situation? (Britain being owned by Casse, atleast?)

Sartes represents the strong military and other forces making taking the Alps and Neravaci tribes difficult, it makes sense because he acts as a way to represent factions that couldn't make it into the game by making them significant. but for Saba, for instance, the surrounding tribes ARE NOT GOING TO BE FIELDING SUPER STACKS MORE POWERFUL THAN SABA, LET ALONE ARCHE SELEUKAIA. It just does not make sense in sense of realism, and is certainly unbalanced and silly in regards to game balance where every pathetic region is somehow more powerful and experienced than the entire fighting forces of organized and powerful kingdoms.

This isn't giving Pergamon big stacks to represent them as a political power, it's giving comical amounts of experience to an unrealistic amount of soldiers to every minor principality.

Hell, some of the stacks exceed the fighting age population available to most of the lands.

I am thick, slow, obtuse and a few other things. I have Rome Total War Anthology installed. I also have EB 1.2 installed as well as the 1.2 fixes and the files necessary to run EB with the ALX.exe. The full install path is "C:\Program Files (x86)\Total War Collection\Total War - Rome Anthology". The Target line for my EB.exe single player is

"C:\Program Files (x86)\EBTrivialScript\EBTrivialScript.exe" -s ebconfig.xml -runeb -type "Single Player"

Based on this information could someone,as if they were dealing with a really stupid person (me), help me by typing exactly, verbatim what I need to copy and paste into Target to make EB run with ALX? I can live without Trivial Script.

I manage to download the files which allow you to run original EB on the Alexander engine, but I am having trouble getting it to run properly. When I try to run the game it starts up alright but then an error message comes up saying "Failed to read censored word dictionary file:eb/data//chat_filter.san

Does anyone have any advice for me to get this game up and running

Hi guys, I have a problem when loading EB with EAM from Steam.
It says:

in my opinion it's pretty unbalanced and comicly, and mostly artificially, difficult. i want all the good things with this mod, like the improved buildings, but the enemy stacks are just silly. not realistic at all.

you literally just gave units super omega chevrons and huge walls solely for the sake of difficulty, not realism. considering ancient military composition there's no way minor kingdoms and unorganized regions are going to have A FULL STACK OF HYPER ELITES. first, how did they get to be so damn experienced? these are stronger than Sartes stacks, that's not realistic. 2nd, how does a small kingdom or region afford an entire professional army that never dies? no, really?

Sartes represents the strong military and other forces making taking the Alps and Neravaci tribes difficult, it makes sense because he acts as a way to represent factions that couldn't make it into the game by making them significant. but for Saba, for instance, the surrounding tribes ARE NOT GOING TO BE FIELDING SUPER STACKS MORE POWERFUL THAN SABA, LET ALONE ARCHE SELEUKAIA. It just does not make sense in sense of realism, and is certainly unbalanced and silly in regards to game balance where every pathetic region is somehow more powerful and experienced than the entire fighting forces of organized and powerful kingdoms.

This isn't giving Pergamon big stacks to represent them as a political power, it's giving comical amounts of experience to an unrealistic amount of soldiers to every minor principality.

Hell, some of the stacks exceed the fighting age population available to most of the lands.

What he said. Full stacks of chevroned, elite units for every podunk town are just not realistic. Full stacks of mundane units would already be somewhat strange, but if they were a normal mix, sure, why not... But as it stands, this is just weird. I mean, improved AI, ok, artificially inflating difficulty by unrealistically having every town defended by this kind of stack doesn't do it for me. Sadly, because the rest of the mod is amazing.

I read the instructions in this post and I did not understand some things.
How do I "Change the target line of EB.exe single player"?
I mean I know how to change a line but change this one into what?
Do I need to do anything else?

Heya there,

as I wrote in that other thread I'm able to finally play EB on Alex (theoretically - see below).
I first tried jirisys' megamod which ran fine (more or less) but ran into a seriously annoying crash issue:
I was able to start my first campaign (Romani) and to play (with the occasional, not permanent crash now and then) to about 235. The AI is so very much improved that I decided to try a campaign as Hayasdan as well, just to see how Romani perform now when they are controlled by the AI.
But I couldn't start the campaign with them. As soon as I clicked on the arrow that should initiate the loading process the game immediately crashed.
I tried that a few times (and with different factions) and always got the same crash.

So I grumbled a bit and then decided to follow Maksimus' explanation for the manual installation of the "plain Alex.exe usage" (not the Extended Alex mod he also provides), since the link for that mod is dead.
Went more or less smooth, the explanation is well-written and quite perfectly understandable.

I installed a few (very few) mods as well (win conditions, phalanx mod and Hannibals RSII environment).
And now I run into the same crash again!

I did a search (not only this forum) but I either don't use the right key words or I am indeed the only one that ever encountered that odd thing.

So my question just is - did any of you have (or hear of) this?
And/Or do you have any idea what I could do?

Redid it completely (deinstalling everything and starting with the installation of R:TW again), didn't install ANY mod except the manual steps Maksimus explained in the first post - same result. I choose a faction, I click on "start campaign", I see my desktop.

Where is that file now? The link is broken.

Do I need BI installed? If I need BI, is the best thing to buy RTW Gold?

Are there more instructions that apply to EB with Alex engine only?

Yes, the link is broken, we must wait for someone to reupload it.

No, you don't need BI. However, if you want it anyway, it's included in RTW Gold & RTW Anthology. You can get it standalone as well



In details:

1. Install Rome Total War + 1,3 and 1,5 patches.
2. Install Alexander expansion or extract the Alx.exe file only into your RTW folder.
3. Install EB 11 and EB 12.
4. EB fixes.

a) To play EB with only improved engine you need use
5. ALX engine files.

b) If you want to play full modification you need to use
5. EAEM files.
5a. EAEM fixes.

6. Change the target line of EB.exe single player.




How to adjust the target line of your EB.exe
>Go to EB shortcut - left clck on the shortcut and chose properties - then - change the Target by copy-paste method

"<drive letter>:\<directory path you've installed RTW into>\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander
"...\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander


That's all you need basicly

I've been trying to get EB to work with steam for the past week and am just about at a loss. I've tried several different methods/guides on getting this to work with steam. I have also tried several fixes. I also have Roma Surrectum II installed (working). When I try to launch from the supplied shortcuts in the alex folder I just get the "can't find steam" error. I get the splash screen but it errors out and freezes at that point with this error: "Failed to read censored word dictionary file:eb/data//chat_filter.san". Is RSII conflicting with EB? I've posted this in the general forum, but I'll take a shot here as well in case it's Alex related. I'm running the stock EB 1.2 with Alex and suddenly (around 232) I've lost the ability to recruit mercenary generals from my type IV settlements. Even if I capture new ones and build fresh type IVs. Has anyone else ever run into this problem and figured out a solution?

Hi guys,

I've followed all the installation instruction, I only what the improved engine not the full mod. However I cant get past the loading screen as an error pops up saying unable to read the "chat_filter" file.

I'm pretty certain I've got the target line correct for the EB short cut. (see below)

"C:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War\RomeTW-ALX.exe" -mod:eb -show_err -nm -noalexander

I'm just wondering have I extracted the "EB12_on_ALX.exe!" file in to the wrong location? I've placed it in the EB file in the "C:\Program Files (x86)\The Creative Assembly\Rome - Total War" file.

I have a problem. The files on GameFront seem to be inaccessible. I keep getting errors. This may be due to problems on GameFront (I've had similar problems today with another file) or with these files specifically.

no it doesnt, none of the mods in the history of this game has as much content as mine, not near as much xD

also, i never had time to write on all the things i made active here, like the Amazon city of gold and silver and diamonds far up the North east, takes u years to get there but when you do... you will never be the same

hello. i must say that this mod is(was) great till i had to fight barbarian army and first CTD happened which told me that there is no german officers skin in data. then i remembered that i forgot to install fixes and i installed them both, but now i cant even load any new campain it CTD all time. what shell i do i re instaled everithing few timess, and it looks like before fixes it will let me start a new campain and play before i engage with sime babrarian army, but after fixes it just CTD whenever i just choos faction and hit start button, it just dont let me do anything :( help pls i realy havent seen better mod than this and i really want to play it.

This works great! I am playing on Hard Campaign and Very Hard Battle and have lost several battles already. A.I. hides in woods (at least when I started in a wooded area) and throw stones from their slingers at me and it took a while to find them. I am in year 267 but having a blast just playing Rome. Thank you Modders for

Open a Text-editor and create a file ''i6comp.bat'' with the following line:
''i6comp e -r data1.cab''

Save the file in ''D:\extract''.

Doubleclick ''i6comp.bat''.

This will extract A LOT of files and may take some time to complete.
When its done you should find ''chat_filter.san'' in ''D:\extract''.
Copy ''chat_filter.san'' to ''<your RomeEB directory>\EB\data''.



I've installed EB on a new computer but a window launches saying "Failed to read censored word dictionary file: data//chat_filter.san". I have installed RTW, Alexander, EB 1.1, 1.2 and Jirisys' Rome: Total War - Alexander - Europa Barbarorum Mega Mod Pack. So I followed your instructions but I'm wondering how long it takes to extract. Its been about and hour now and its still extracting (I think). Is something wrong?

Hi,

chat_filter.san is a file you would have to copy from Alexander data folder into EB one. However i cannot 100% confirm if coping itself would work alone as ur using other mod.

for EAEM you can simply download the new link and play it separately from your current game, just save it in any random location.

Ok I tried installing EAEM and fixes, your screen will load but it still asks for chat_filter.san. I copied the chat_filter.san from the Alexander data folder into the EB one but that didn't work.

Hi All,
I played Alexander EB for a long time and think it is really a great game. But now I get this error message and the game crashes when I fight Seleucid armies with Persian Hoplites. I checked the textures folder and it seems the file for the Kardaka Arteshtar (Persian Hoplites) is missing. What can I do? I would be very gratefull for any help!

Generic Error: Failed to find texture 'eb/data/models_unit/textures/arteshkar kardaka parthia'.

Hey Max, I have a little problem with your EAEM bundle from MEGA.. I already changed my schortcut to the correct folders i have my game extracted to, yet when i use it the game loads fine but the window is small, theres no way turning it up to full screen, with the different graphical changes in options not applying properly, causing my game to have a low framerate..

I like this mod a lot. But it sometimes crashes when i end turns. I load it and it works without crashing. But only this version of mod does it.

Also is it just me or is the game laggier? Big battle game lags a lot. I got 8 gb and game is on SSD. also 290 rx is my graphics card.

These 2 reasons make the game really hard to enjoy to fullest. But otherwise great mod.
