    Default need a little advice

ok so as some of you know i have a very weak internet connection
this is because i am using a neighbors wifi (out of desperation), and its pretty weak. i know its shameful but i have no choice. plus i have no way of finding out the owner b/c its the generic name for the router ("linksys") and theres a huge apartment complex right behind my house.
with the help of a friend, i found a good router. but now i need a good argument so i can convince my dad to let me get the router so i can play MP for my many games, like COD4 and AA.

heres the situation with me and my dad.
he doesnt trust me that much, since about a year ago he caught me using a neighbors wifi. when i first asked for a router, he said "i dont trust you." that was about a week ago.

now, there are 2 ways of doing this, at first glance:
    1) suck up to him and earn it, but it will take a while
    2) buy it and hide it, but if im caught theres huge consequences and ill lose the router.
    3) make a deal with him, like if i get an A on my final exam for my summer course i get the router

and no, kicking my dad in the if he says no is NOT an option.

so any suggestions on how to argue for a router?

    thanks for the help!

Well, i've done the second two, not the first.

2 worked, my parents just dealt with it, but it was pretty much the first thing I've done outside of their jurisdiction that they know about

I suggest 3, pick an easy exam and study like hell.

well ive done a lot things outside their jurisdiction, but short of doing drugs, smoking or alcohol addiction.
the problem with 2 is that if im caught....
my dad is not one to be trifled with. he took away my laptop for a month when he found out i was using a neighbors wifi. i dont want to know what he will do if he finds the router. too much risk and it will only be a last, desperate option for me.

and i only have one final to study for, a history class, and i think i will study hard for this one. i did ok on my AP US history exam, i got a 3, so hes not too happy. maybe if i got an A+ i can change his mind.

one of the best rules in life to adhere to, is to never ask a parent for money/property. Save up the money and buy it yourself, that way, the next time your father decides to shove his foot up your he can't bludgeon you with the router as well.

i do plan to buy it myself, but id rather stay on his good side. if he found out that i got a router without his permission hed probably take something valuable away from me, even if i did buy it. like my laptop. bear in mind everyone that the router will be connected to my home computer.

You could just try not stealing your neighbour's internet connection. Is this router so you can get a better signal from your neighbour?

And what do you mean you have no choice? Do you have a slow internet connection at home or no internet connection? If it's no internet connection then I can understand how you would need to steal from the neighbour for school, but stealing just to play a game is just downright dirty.

Isn't routers used to get your own internet connection going?

I agree with miotas. A router alone =/= internet.

my connection isnt strong enough to play MP, which is why i want the router. the main family computer, which is bad for games, has broadband. and im banned from the main computer. im still not sure exactly why.

Shouldn't have hanged out with the Jewish Defense Force, that would freak out anyone

If you can pay for it ask why you aren't allowed to have it, what's up with that. Personal rule I developed, 'only listen when it makes sense', got me in trouble once in a while, but the payof is good.

Sounds like you have a bigger problem than a weak internet connection.Poor communication with ones parents is never a good thing. Try handling it by asking why you're banned from the main computer and not allowed a router either to use your own. If you're being punished and don't know why, well, that's dodgy parenting in my book. Be straightforward and honest first and show you deserve to be trusted. Do it for yourself, if not for them. Going behind their back first just reinforces the claim that "I don't trust you", don't give them that ammunition to use against you.

I learned from an early age that being honest with my Dad, including the bad news, was less painful than getting caught in a lie. It builds character and when you learn to pick your battles wisely demonstrates one has the courage of their convictions no matter what anyone else thinks.
Nobody likes or respects a sneak and a liar, including the sneaky liar.

Get some dirt on him. Once when I borrowed my dads calculator for school I found £100 in the back of it.

Me and the other pupils at my table thought it was pretty cool and they said I should keep it, but I just gave it back to him. Came in useful when I forgot the occassional piece of homework in the future...

Yeah, I was always honest with my parents and very rarely asked for anything, so whenever I wanted to stop at a mates house or go to a party, unless we had somewhere else to go the answer was always yes, and on the rare occasions I asked for anything, so long as it wasn't expensive, I would always recieve it as a birthday or christmas present. It worked quite well since my birthday is near the middle of the year

I'm a tad confused about the layout. Your family has broadband access, but the modem is just connected directly into the main house computer?

If this is the case, it should be easy to talk your father into a router. A router between the modem and the internal home network offers a lot more security than the honeypot you currently have. Even homes with just a single computer should have a router, if only for NAT and port filtering.

yes that is the case. the broadband modem is directly wired into the computer.

is it really true that a router offers more security? ive always suspected that a router does good things for a connection, but i was never really sure. this may be the argument i really need.

Your setup really doesn't make much sense. I assume your dad is paying for a dialup service, while having broadband also?

Tell him it will save him money in the long run if you buy a router. I'm not seeing the logic here.

Speaking from experience, it will probably be simpler to get a combo modem/wireless router in one box, as having the modem go to the router then to your computer can quite often cause problems. Though it will be more expensive than just a wireless router.

I understand that some parents can be awfully strict in their backwardness when it comes to "technology" and their lack of understanding.

Try convincing a "conservative businessman" like my father, that switching from DOS to Win98 would be a sound investment. He fought me for over a year, even though he absolutely refused to accept that I was right. Although, eventually he did make the switch, and thanked me for the sound advice. After that, he never questioned me when it came to matters of technology.

Sometimes you just need the right circumstances.

I too, have been a few situations like the one above. Getting a custom computer, was ignored, it turned out bad. I've been at my parents to get a decent internet connection for about a year now, and once I pinpointed the cause of the no, (them wanting to keep their old email) one guy I work with gave me a solution, and it may just work yet.

Try Hooah, I'm rooting for you
