Personally, I liked YLC's post, it was really gutsy and has clearly generated alot of discussion already, and that's never a bad thing in the early stages of a game.

However, there's one little thing that niggled at me:

The four officers are all power roles (detective, doctor, role-blocker, unknown role); by publicly electing them, you're allowing the mafia to know who has been chosen as your aides, thus painting them as a target for murder. Of course, that's if a mafia doesn't manage to infiltrate your officers to begin with.

How amusing. I was merely pointing out that it is easy to cast light on the faults of others, but much less so to examine one's own. It is for that very reason that Comrade Mao, in his infinite wisdom, has taught that to actively self-reflect and self-criticize is a revolutionary's most cherished ability, and something all of us, however "human" we may be, should continuously strive to do. Why did you say Tyrant, even though nothing I said came even close to implying that? Why don't you know the basic tenets of our doctrine? So you want to be "Tyrant", eh? Is that what's brewing in your mind? Well, I just want to warn you now, whether you're a Kuomintang running dog or a riben guizhi zaogao, that your overlords will never let you be "tyrant" of anything; once you have outlived your usefulness to them, they will either dispose of you or reduce you to slavery. I don't like this either.

We should apply a more randomness to the election of the chairman. It would be very bad for us, should we elect a Japanese or a nationalist as chairman.
They would want to become chairman and thereby control the pro-town effort.
I therefore suggest Secura as chairman.

    Elect: Secura

The Officers are harder to kill by both the Imperialists and any Vigilantes, thanks to them being accorded more powerful weaponry than the rest of you lot. Also, the roles will be publically known to everyone. If the Chairman wishes, I suppose he could change it so that the Officers are elected, but the default position is that the Chairman picks.

I would also like to point out that I am extremely pleased with the level of RP going on, and I hope this level is sustained.

I had guessed that the Chairman would be a tough cookie, but hadn't pegged his officers down as being of similar stock, therefore assuming that their identities would be secret to all but one another and the Chairman, thus making the above post. Naturally, such secrecy wouldn't be required if they're inherently hard to kill themselves.

This is all the result of reading over the rules with no sleep at all... I've learned a valuable lesson today!

I don't mind either way how the officers are chosen; public elections would allow us to pick players according to their strengths to fulfill the power roles, but if we're going to place enough faith in someone to vote for them to be Chairman in the first place, then should we not place further trust in their wisdom and allow them to make the choices themselves.

All I'd ask is that it doesn't descend into some sort of popularity contest, really.

The Chairman is a tough cookie; he is unkillable, and can only be removed by revolt. His officers aren't as tough, but still hard nuts to crack.

Comrade Azathoth (OOC: That's funny some how ), I want nothing more then equality, and if communism is that path, then so be it. I say "Tyrant" and "Dictator", because that is what our enemies are - men who would seek to gather all the power to themselves, who would control your thoughts and motives. I've lived an entire life under such men, I will do so no more! If that means opposing others amongst us, so be it - many self-proclaimed liberators became tyrants and kings themselves.

To that end, if all are in disagreeance about electing Officers, then allow us to decide when they go! If an Officer is NOT living up to his duties or the satisfaction of the proletariat, then he should be sacked and replaced, or we all lynch the Officer!

[metagaming] popularity is a necessary evil in this case. It's just like you said about AVSM, he won't make a good Chairman because of his usual inactivity. The chairman and his deputies need to be trustworthy people who will follow the game actively, make the right decisions and will not miss an order. These features are closely related to popularity in the GameRoom, that's why some players sadly are disadvantaged on election day.

Duly noted, comrade. We will have an ideologic spar in a more opportune time and place.

Having dismissed the demagogue, Azathoth turns away with a look on his face before facing wideeyedwanderer.

Well, I am but a young and inexperienced farmer's lad, Beskar is certainly a more adept leader and strategist. Though you may vote for whomever you wish, know that I have thrown my support behind him.

Proud that the flattery had not clouded his judgement or made him feel overly proud, Azathoth moved a few yards beyond the encampment, took off his chinos, and emitted a blob of what had once been a particularly spicy bowl of lo mein. The consistency of the stuff created an uncomfortable sensation, leading Azathoth to gingerly swivel around on his ankles in a fruitless search for a suitable piece of vegetation, or a stray shred of cloth. Though most of the party turned away out of courtesy or disgust, General Hankerchief watched it all while stroking his chin. He looked like a man about to make a difficult decision

Ultimately, a dictatorship of the proletariat must be directed by a dictatorship of one. Our glorious revolution must be guided by a fatherly leader. At least one who speaks out bravely against the potential corruption of this office will strive to resist it the longest.

Plus, the irony is simply too great to ignore.

It has just occured to me, looking through the sign up thread, that I did not elaborate on the town investigation process.

It is a variant upon GH's layer cake investigation system. On the first investigation, the resistance of a player to a particular weapon will be revealed, if they have one. The second investigation will reveal if they are susceptible to anti-Marxist propaganda, whilst the third will reveal if they are a Communist, or not.

Comrade Beskar, I am truly sorry to decline your generous offer, but I rate our chances higher with the General, if you are both good Communists. You are equally clever, but the General has less of a history of antagonizing those who should be his allies. If you are not -- and I wish there were a realistic option who had not promoted himself -- then I prefer the option who has not, to my knowledge, attempted to hand-pick his officers.

The "General" is one ingrained with American Chicago politics. Bent on corruption and ill wishes upon the people. He would stop at nothing for a glimpse of power.

I'm not so convinced you really chose on merit, Comrade Beskar, that's the thing. As far as I can tell it appears to be "people I talk to a lot", with possibly just a dash of "people I think I can manipulate". I'm fairly certain I qualify on both counts.

I wish I could be sure the General will be any better, but at least he appears a bit more transparent thus far. Let us hope that continues. I am sorry to disappoint you.

    (Also lol Chicago politics.)

You know if we were to roleplay this game Beskar would be perfect for Chairman, he likes to style himself as a leftist humanitarian sort, but give him a position of power and the authoritarian within comes roaring out.
