Is ANYONE interested in talking to France? I've rather gotten the cold shoulder from everyone I've talked to.

Or, at best, a brief agreement not to go to war with me immediately. Not in character either. :tongue:

I don't know where you got that idea - I remember many a long evening where Asinus and I would chat about the issues of the day. Maybe it was just you Chaotix! (Just joking, he was rather monosyllabic)

With an allied HRE serving as a massive buffer zone and early warning system, I haven't been too worried about eastern invasions. We also have little incentive to talk trade, as we have no trade route between our nations. The HRE is currently providing my merchants with nice things to barter. We have no common enemies, not sure we have strong ties through common allies either.

We aren't averse to hearing from you, we would certainly welcome it. However, the French King has been far too busy recently assuming command of his nation and keeping the peace to be too worried about international diplomacy, beyond the obvious and immediate threats to our security. With a friendly Spain and HRE by our side, all that looms as a great threat is an unknown and untrustworthy (read: AI) power controlling the British Isles. That is why the current King cannot honor the previously signed agreement with England. That other king was a madman for signing away our security to barbarians that can't control their own island, and frequently invade our shores and smell of rancid, unwashed pantaloons.

With no matters of trade to discuss, no warring allies to engage in diplomacy about, no current disputes, and no other obvious joint ventures between our two peoples, the only other thing I see is offers of formal alliance. Which, if there were a dispute between you and the HRE, or other allies of mine, that would force me to break such an alliance with one of my friends, an uncomfortable position for France.

The distance between our peoples and lack of common ground or even dispute means we have no proposals to offer you presently. However, if your King sees a future for cooperation between our two kingdoms, my chambers will always be welcoming of your emissaries.

Well… there is no rule in place forbidding spies to open the gates of human settlements?

I even skimmed this whole thing to look whether such a rule was proposed later on but found nothing.

I dont know do we want to keep it like that?
This gate opening thing is sort of a dice game. One player might end up on the lucky side more often and another one on the bad side. I dont know whether success should be based on luck. I just needed one lucky spy to open the gate. I even just had one spy at all who had a fair chance to enter the city and this one then even was lucky enough to manage to open the gates. On the other hand if the Moors were trying to do the same with one spy next round they might not be that lucky. Maybe they would have to pump two or three or four in to get the same result. It is solely a matter of chance then and I dont think the outcome of a war – a match should be determined by that.

Now I did use it to my advantage this turn so it might sound a bit odd if I suggest that spies should not be allowed to open the gates of human settlements however I really think it should be like that so maybe we all can agree on it so we can have this rule in place the next turn on.
The Moors of course are free to conquer one settlement of their choice of mine with spies still in compensation for me doing the same this turn.. Just one though!

Here is another thing I want to propose.

“Cities under siege cannot destroy any buildings whatsoever!!
You can destroy buildings(if you want) of a captured settlement only after 3 turns of holding it.

Whats the beef with Destroying Buildings?
Alright here is the deal, often the landscape of a campaign is rendued a virtual wasteland of destroyed towns as people burn their stuff to prevent it going in the hands of an ennemy, these rules are suppose to prevent them.
I would ban pillaging all together, but sometimes for financial purposes inorder to build a much needed fleet or army, you might have no option but to pillage for funds.
For this reason its acceptable, and should be done only for this reason.
However, its often used by people who are about to lose a city, and destroy the buildings to prevent their enemy from having it.
Similar tactics include, capturing an important enemy structure, only to destroy it and leave.
And destroying structures before the enemy army can reach the city.”

The idea and even the words itself are from Triforce actually. I copied it verbatim so all props go to him.

So how do you guys feel about those rules?

It's usually the case that if you fight battles in a hotseat then spies are allowed (otherwise you can never take a settlement because if you leave an army in siege it will be destroyed on the battlemap by the garrison troops on the defending player's turn). Obviously if siege equipment is plentiful and movement rates are high (like in WotK) then you can get away with banning spies and still have a decent game.

I don't think those conditions apply here and I think this game is too slow to rely solely on siege equipment. So I don't think we should ban spies unless we are also going to switch to autoresolved battles (in which case I would have developed my training centers very differently and raised different armies!).

As long as everyone plays fair then the randomness of spies is a level playing field for everyone.

I'm ambivalent about destroying buildings - I don't mind the 'scorched earth' tactic myself because it seems to me that a conquering army would initially have trouble raising troops from the local (conquered) populace. The delay of a few turns while training facilities are built seems to me to be a good representation of how long it would take to persuade local people to serve the conqueror in his army. Also it gives the defender a bit of cash to play with which seems to be a good balancing feature to me. And it creates a cost of going to war - you run the risk of your lands being destroyed and made less profitable, just like in real life. Of course if you are able to pull off a surprise attack on a big juicy city you can capture it without giving your opponent time to burn it down - again, just like in real life.

However these are just my views and as GM I'm willing to consider any rule change that has a majority opinion behind it. So please post your opinions here.

Bad news everyone - I can't get the game to advance past the end of the turn. I just get a CTD every time. I have tried going back to previous players' turns and advancing it from there and it happens every time at the end of turn 21, after the papal states turn is ended. I have tried switching Ireland and the Papal States to human control and looking to see if anything strange is happening on their turns but I can't see anything.

I'm out of ideas - does anyone have any suggestions about how to fix this persistent CTD? If not, I'm afraid this game might be dead.

thats bad news. maybe u can try to set more factions to the computer that were human ruled before just randomly. maybe set all but one faction to the computer or even all just to end the turn. or maybe set all to human and skip the turns. or try to “play” the whole round again by just skipping every turn to see whether it works starting with last turns save. got no idea though really.

I fixed it! Still not sure what was going on but it was something to do with the Khwarezm. I skipped through their turn manually making a few changes so that none of their cities rebelled, and I was able to advance the turn.

It's England's turn now and I'm supposed to be subbing - I'll try to get to it later today.

I'm afraid I have no idea what's going on. You are looking in M2TW/mods/StainlessSteel/saves right?

Can you hit ctrl+S instead to create a Quicksave file on the HRE pw screen? Can you see that file? If so, just post that instead.

Alternatively, can you see the automatically generated Autosave file that the game creates when you hit 'end turn'? If so, send me that and I can advance the turn for you to HRE while you work on the problem.

Gah! With this new update to the skin, you can't distinguish links from normal text unless you mouse over it.

Both the "Guild" and "Shogun" skins are the same way. The only one where you can tell the difference is the "NTW" skin, and that one's ugly.

Hey slysnake!

Zim's trying to start up a hotseat over here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?128670-Crusades-Hotseat-Signup). You have Kingdoms installed?

Basically, you just go to these forums, download your turn, move the turn file to your "saves" folder in your base M2TW directory (default: C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval 2 Total War\saves), and then start up the game. You then load your save file, play your turn, end your turn, create a new save, and then upload that save file to these forums. Then the process repeats. Pretty easy. :)

The more technical stuff might come up later. Depending on the hotseat you are joining, you might PM the host to see what stuff you'll need. For instance, if you're running a mod, you'll want to put the save files in a different place (example: C:\Program Files\SEGA\Medieval 2 Total War\broken crescent\saves).

The hotseat experience is great! I think you'll really enjoy it. :)

If you ever have any questions, feel free to PM me. I run the "Lords of the East" hotseat in this forum, too.

Hey guys, could someone please briefly explain to me how these hotseats work? I'd love to start playing now if its not too late :sweatdrop:

1. Firstly, you have to make sure you have the same version of the game and any modification installed correctly on your computer
2. You have to know how to set up a "hotseat" game by editing one of the game files, or in later versions clicking the "multiplayer" option.
3. When it is someone else's turn, all you can do is wait.
4. When it is your turn, you download the save file from the person before you.
5. You save the file in one of the game's saved files folders (for the correct mod, in this case Stainless Steel.)
6. You open the game, and then open the file.
7. Enter your password
8. Play your turn
9. I save at this point so I can see what the status of my kingdom is.
10. Hit "end turn"
11. The screen now shows the password screen for the next player's turn.
12. Save the file, name it as instructed (hotseat game, player, turn number) In this case, DoW_France_23 or something.
12a. Reduce the size of the save file by compressing it into a .rar file.
13. Go to a file uploader (I use sendspace, others use the org uploader) and upload the file.
14. Post the link to the uploaded file here, and private message the person next in line with the link, tell them that they are up.

I think I've got about 20 turns total experience. I was ousted rather quickly by my standards in the Broken Crescent game, and I wasn't Denmark for very long in another one, and I've only done about 3 turns here and 3 turns there.

Of the two I would say England are in the better position - both are at war with their neighbours but France has not yet made the shores of old Blighty so I'd probably go with that.

I'd check the overall power ratings and military data with regards to the Moors and England, for comparison purposes.

I am easily 4 times more powerful than England, and while I haven't made it to the shores yet, (moving my massive army across massive France takes time) when I do it WILL be an abject slaughter.

Of the non player factions Khwarezm appear to be the strongest, followed by the Cuman. Between England and the Moors, the Moors typically rank higher in most areas. This is of course all based off the in-game graphs. I believe Phonicsmonkey and Zim have been subbing for England and the Moors, so they might have a better idea of their actual situations, plus phonicsmonkey has taken over as gamemaster and might have a idea of what nations are in the best positions. So you might want to try pm'ing them :)

And we're actually using Stainless Steel 6.2. There is a list of the mods need on the first post, however, some of the links there don't work. If needed, I can check to see if I still have the links for the place were I found them.

Kwarezhm is at war with the most powerful faction in the game

Although, they're probably unique in being the only one of the major factions available that's at war because it attacked the faction it's fighting. :clown:

wouldnt it make more sense he took over one of the computer ruled factions that are still in good shape? probably a better way to get to know the whole thing than facing a hard to survive war as england. might be a bit too much to start with

The computer-controlled factions are all unbalanced because the AI has been running them with bonus money scripts for 20-odd turns. So I don't think it's a good idea for a human to take them over.

Yes, both England and the Moors have difficult starting positions (from here) but there are possibilities for both to improve their situations and there's nothing like fighting a losing war to teach you how to play better in hotseats, as I am discovering right now in LotE.

Ok, I'm working on the Seljuk turn now the Moorish one is done. I'll round up the Seljuk one in the morning.

I built a few forts during the Moorish turn, and didn't think much about it. Then I crashed when trying to fight a battle with the Seljuks, so I reinstalled all the files. Now I can't build forts at all. My question is, are we supposed to be able to build forts or not? I can't remember reading about them being taken out, then again I hardly followed this thread at all for a long period of time.

If fort are indeed supposed to be out, I'll have to redo the Moors aswell. But that's in eight hours, after I get my sleep. :)

Phonicsmonkey, your inbox is full, so I'll have to say what I was going to say in here:

I think I have a compatability problem - I put the save in my stainless steel saves folder, started up stainless steel, hit 'load' then 'load campaign game'. The save is there - I click it, it begins to load on a normal looking screen with a quote + picture, but then 5 seconds later it changes to a different picture with no quote, and shortly after doing so it appears to crash and takes me straight back to the home screen of stainless steel.

Any idea what this problem could be and how I could possibly fix it? I was really looking forward to taking my turn this morning until this happened! :embarassed:

To install, you have to extract the files and put them in the stainless steel folder. Put them in the folders with corosponding names to the ones you extracted them from.

Heyo! Me from LotE again, Slysnake.

Firstly, make sure you are playing with the right version of Stainless Steel. This hotseat is playing with a slightly older version than the one currently out. Make sure you are playing with SS 6.2.
Secondly, make sure you have Kingdoms installed and that it is patched to 1.05.
Download the community Hotseat Patch 1.2 and install in your M2TW folder.
If that doesn't work, trying going into mods/Stainless Steel/data/worlds/maps/base and deleting the map.rwm file.
If that doesn't work, trying re-downloading SS from a separate site, because the one you downloaded from might have corrupt SS files.

Hope any of that helps!

That could very well be it. You might also have corrupt download files. That is actually fairly common...

I cant actually find a place to download just the 6.2 patch. Any results I find lead me to 6.2.4, which is incompatible with 6.2 games, so unless someone is still hosting 6.2 for download I wont be able to play... My guess is that any links to download 6.2 have been removed since 6.2.4 fixes a few bugs that appeared in 6.2 :/

I installed 6.0, along with the 6.1 patch with NO optional mods. I then installed the 6.2 patch (not 6.2.4) followed by the 1.2 hotseat patch you told me about.

But now, I cannot even SEE the save in my campaigns folfer once I try and load a game, even though I put a copy of the save with my turn in the save folder.

So I wont be able to play this turn :/

I had to do a search on my computer. the thing was saving to a totally different folder that I couldn't find because it was buried underneath like 10 layers of folders.

do a search for files called "DoW2" and wait for the search to take a long time. Then when you find it, open the containing folder, and then make a shortcut to that folder and put it on your desktop.

Caution: I don't know if this will work for you because you only just installed it. Maybe you have no save files in that folder.

Anyway my path was like Users-My name-AppData-Local-VirtualStore-program files x86-Sega-Medieval-mods-SS-saves., plus the usual stuff before it.

I don't know if that is what your problem is, but if it fixes it, great

EDIT: I can't sub this until tomorrow night anyway, so keep trying and hopefully you'll be able to get it working.

I know this sucks, but if I were you I would start completely from scratch. reinstall M2TW, then Kingdoms, then patch it to 1.05, then install Stainless Steel, 6.2 and the hotseat patch.

In all fareness, and not because he is my ally, he deserves a sub and not a skipping. He is in enough trouble as it is already, and a turn without doing anything can't be good for his small chances of survival. I say go ahead ATPG, unless you're thinking of spilling all the beans to Magyar-monkey later. ;)

If I know monkey he's already got spies everywhere. I couldn't tell him anything he doesn't already know.

I'd also have to think pretty lowly of him, which I don't, to presume he needed my help here.

Well, personally not my choice, but it was at the O2 Academey venue in Islington North London. It was a band I had to go take my bro to see called 'We sunk Atlantis' - it was better than I thought it would be ^^

u are kinda touring the wrong places in terms of party Balthor. paris, london thats way to expensive. also if u want to check out the real night life u ll apparently have to talk to people living in the city since this is changing quite frequently and only people actually living there do really know about the indie scene. all i can say is as for paris to obviously forget about the old party mile around montmartre like moulin rouge and those variety sort of things nightclubs. only wierdos and people 50+ still go there. also forget about 11th arrondissement and this whole thing around the bastille. thats just posh upper class sh. also true for all the “in” locations quarters. its kinda the same for london just that its even more expensive. as for london however newham was the place to go when i was there like the indian quarter. that was pretty wack. im not sure whether it still is so dont blame me. what i do know however is that the best place to party in europe rightnow is berlin. cheap, non posh, indie, lots of different styles. really rad. u should get it on ur schedule. however its always best to talk to the youth in the city also since partying alone obviously does suck so since i dont know about ur german french and english skills u ll probably have the best time in lisboa. however have fun!

oh yea and do not visit the places around centre pompidou unless u want to party with guys only... coz this scene is the one u dont want to check out as a guy so do urself a big favour and dont learn the hard way like literally that even someone with big tits still can be a guy. gotta watch ur ass

Balthor, I lived in London for ten years until a few years ago when I moved to Australia. If you like superclubs you could try Fabric in Clerkenwell. If you prefer more of an indie scene you could go to any number of clubs and bars in Shoreditch, Old Street and Hoxton, including 333, Bedroom Bar (was a fave of mine), or Cargo. Also Vibe Bar on Brick Lane is a good place to have a few pre-club drinks especially if the weather is nice and you can hang out in the courtyard. Across the street is 93 Feet East which is pretty eclectic but usually a good night out, and close to the 24-hour bagel bakery for late night / early morning snacking. I could go on and on but I don't know what kind of music you like or what your scene is, so I'll leave it there.

Otherwise pick up a copy of TimeOut when you get to London, it'll have the latest club and gig guide for you and it's usually pretty much on the pulse.
