The Grand Inquisitor is the supreme enforcer of the Catholic faith, a more improved and feared version of the Inquisitor. They are only available once the High period arrives. Once recruited, Grand Inquisitors cost no upkeep and will only be removed from the game if they are assassinated.

Uses

  • A Grand Inquisitor positioned in a province owned by another faction will reveal all buildings and troops present in the province. Religious agents are less likely to be assassinated by other factions than emissaries, but they are not immune.
  • A Grand Inquisitor positioned in a Catholic province will increase the zeal of the populace by 5%. This conversion rate may be increased with higher valour. Increasing the zeal in a province is helpful in two ways. Crusades will gain more troops when created or traveling through a high zeal province, and Inquisitions will be more successful in high zeal provinces.
  • A Grand Inquisitor will reduce the percentage of Heretics in a province.
  • A Grand Inquisitor can try any Catholic general for heresy. This is done by dropping the Grand Inquisitor onto the army stack of the general to be targeted. The success depends on the valour level of the Grand Inquisitor and the target, the piety of the general being tried, and the zeal of the province the trial occurs in. The Grand Inquisitor has a much better chance of success than a standard Inquisitor. The presence of a Bishop or Cardinal in the province will hinder the attempt. If successful, the general is killed and the Grand Inquisitor will gain valour. If the Inquisition fails, the target general survive, and will likely pick up vices or virtues that will affect their piety. This means repeated Inquisitions will generally succeed, since eventually a general will gain a vice that will lower his piety to the point where he will be found guilty.
  • An idle Grand Inquisitor left in a high zeal Catholic province will start burning the population. This has no effect on units or agents, but will reduce the zeal, happiness, and income of the province. (only happens in provinces owned by the inquisitor's faction?)
