I shall blaspheme by stating this URL: http://www.cabalonline.com

Woot!

Oh, why don't we trade email addresses? Hax, Horst and I have each other on MSN now, let's add all the other Tavern regulars, shall we?

Cabal? Not familiar with it. Are you allowed to bring that up in here ... well, on second thought, it is the only thread where you can. So I guess it is ok. Let me check with the rest of the EBF Council of 10 to make sure you can divide your allegiances ... *smirk*

Alex for embodying the spirit of the offensive.

Yes, many people forget about Anabasis. It must have been an example of logistics I presume. And leading that army across hostile land, trying to evade an army much more flexible and faster... it must count for something. How I'd like to see a decent movie based on that! BTW Pez, do you know where can I find any sources for Anabasis?

Upon hearing that her elderly grandfather had just passed away, Katie went straight to her grandparent's house to visit her 95 year-old grandmother and comfort her.

When she asked how her grandfather had died, her grandmother replied, "He had a heart attack while we were making love on Sunday morning."

Horrified, Katie told her grandmother that 2 people nearly 100 years old having sex would surely be asking for trouble.

"Oh no, my dear," replied granny. "Many years ago, realizing our advanced age, we figured the best time to do it was when the church bells would start to ring. It was just the right rhythm. Nice and slow and even. Nothing too strenuous, simply in on the Ding and out on the Dong."

She paused to wipe away a tear, and continued, "He'd still be alive if the ice cream truck hadn't come along."

Heyo all! Sorry, while all this was going on I was taking my customary 7 daily hours of sleep, something normal humans do, I believe. Wow, Brazil...

@Burakuku

I can't help you too much with Anabasis, because I can't even find a copy of Anabasis in Borders Singapore or Books Kinokuniya (the two largest bookshops and most decent history book sellers in Singapore). But what I can tell you is that in my copy of Theodore Ayrault Dodge's 'Alexander' there is pretty much a 'Highlights of the Anabasis' section, in which he talks about the evolution of warfare and the lessons learnt by the Greeks that were subsumed into the Makedonian theory of war. It's got maps, analysis from military standpoint, and rather strong detail because he makes the case that the Anabasis was what woke Greece up to the weakness of the Persian Empire and the fact that it was possible to conquer it, and which also taught the Greeks and Makedonians quite a few things about war.

You guys should really get Ayrault Dodge's work. His 'Alexander' includes:

The rise of Persia, with maps, detailing Cyrus the Great's campaign and battles against Croesus, and his fights with the Massagetai.
Cunaxa, and the most important engagements of the Anabasis, their conduct, and lessons taught and learnt.
Agesilaus' campaign in Asia Minor.
Philip's campaigns in Greece.
Alexander's Balkan and Persian campaigns.

And his 'Hannibal' covers:

The Pyrrhic War
The Gaulish War culminating in Telamon
The First Punic War
The Carthaginian mercenary revolt after the First Punic and its defeat
Hannibal's Campaigns in Hispania
The Hannibalic War
The Magnesia campaign
The Pydna campaign

Ya. These are really the best buys you could make for the amount of detail, scholarship and broadness of coverage provided. Just...don't believe everything he says about the make-up of the Greek and Roman armies. He wrote this book long before they discovered Lorica Segmentata.

...Okay seriously, the pictures of the soldiers are WAY OFF. But the descriptions are good. So don't look at the pictures. Kinda like making love with the lights off, but ah well.

And in other news, I've just gotten possibly the best haul of books ever!

My school library was having a sale of old, condemned, grimy etc books, and I found 19 hardcover (some Britannica Great Authors set) books going at 5 dollars each! Just to crow a bit, I spent something like 40 US dollars equivalent (95 Singapore dollars) on what should have cost ten times that!

What I got was this:

Aristotle Volume 1: Logic, Physical Treatises, Metaphysica, On the Soul, Short Physical Treatises

Dante: Divina Commedia

In one volume,
Lucretius: On the Nature of Things
Epictetus: Discourses
Marcus Aurelius: Meditations

In one volume,
Montesquieu: The Spirit of Laws
Rousseau: On the Origin of Inequality, On Political Economy, and The Social Contract

In one volume,
Herodotus: History
Thucydides: History of the Peloponnesian War

Goethe: Faust

Virgil's poetry

Adam Smith: Wealth of Nations

Milton: English Minor Poems, Paradise Lost, Samson Agonistes, Areopagitica

Gibbon: The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire in two volumes

Homer: The Iliad and Odyssey

St. Augustine: Confessions, City of God, On Christian Doctrine

Fielding: The History of Tom Jones-A Foundling

Darwin: The Origin of Species, The Descent of Man

In one volume, the collected plays of
Aeschylos
Sophocles
Euripides
Aristophanes

Montaigne: Essays

The Great Ideas: A Syntopicon, in two volumes

You found a goldmine, sir!

I love it when the library at the university has a book sale. They usually last three days and on the third day it's like 3 dollars per BAG of books. Since most everyone doesn't know a good historical source if one fell on their head, the third day is usually a bountiful harvest of collections of primary sources and academic history.

e.g: english slangs: bits, plums, c.jewels.etc...

Farm work this weekend. The fences around the summer paddock need to be replaced. Luckily, horses are none too bright so they don't have to be super-duper overnight, we can take two weekends to do the work. You can hold a calm horse in with just "police line" tape--it's like they see a bright line and assume there is a fence attached.

Well I think European people are less idiotic than American.

Idiocy and stupidity are two different things. One can be a complete idiot (have no common sense) and not have a shred of stupidity (mental dullness).

hahahaha

and the chinese are smarter than the Arabs
The chinese are idiots. They think they should rule the world yet their own government blocking their citizen's eyes/internets and treat them like cheap manpower, which they accepte. Also they can think of nothing original and only creat cheap imitation of products.

and lastly the Japanese are the smartest.
Even if you say that, they choose to alienate themselfs from their own visual art, considering anyone who take an interest in it as a pervert. On the other hand, manga is quite acceptable and popular there so ya.
On every other aspect, they're just weird, but partialy in a good way.

Cmacq is maltese?

Anyway, it's a true statement. Maltese is basically a language with a semitic grammatical basis, with several romance loanwords, especially Italian, Sicilian and English, and is written in the Latin alphabet. So it's quite a unique hotpotch.

Goes quite a long way in explaining our history actually too.

Mod their shit. I made the body guard equal to the Sweboz body guard; I also boosted the noble infantry and medium cavalry.

04-21-2008, 03:41
It's not really cheating; the EB team dropped the ball with the Sweboz bodyguard and Thanes in 1.0. Then again, it was a minor thing. I think stats come after everything else is put together.

I personally think their current stats make them underpowered; so, I fix that. It's not like it's over powered. The combined stats for defense skill, armor, and shield for the noble infantry adds up to like 23, maybe 24.

Emperor Burakuku
04-21-2008, 05:50

just watched another bs disaster whatever...

...and they don't seem to be able to check a single fact?

It was one huge hump of bs after another.

I don't know how, but they must be stopped.

Right, I remember a few years ago, they did this jfk thing about how johnson did it. They were flooded with e-mails demanding a retraction and apology because they hadn't check any of the facts, which were clearly wrong, as stated in the program? They did it; the retraction and apology, because of their sponsors.

Right, thats where they live...

....where the money is; with their bloody sponsors!!!

tragically, my cable isn't working (such a dog-D'ed TV service-we paid them on time, and now look.)

Emperor Burakuku
04-21-2008, 07:19
Why is that a tragedy? I don't watch TV anymore. It's a waste of time. I have books, I have music, and of course, I have EB. There are also friends, girls, school and sports. There are a lot of decent activities to fill up your time. OK... I watch football 3-4 times a week, I forgot about this. There is also a cultural broadcast I like to watch from time to time... but that's pretty much al. Oh and Civilizations from time to time... but that's so rare now. I must be realy bored if I do that.

Last Days on Earth:

Could the human race become suddenly extinct? We count down seven ways in which the world as we know it could meet an abrupt and untimely end, from a mammoth asteroid strike to the eruption of a super volcano. What would happen as computers literally become trillions of times smarter than we are--would they program our mass murder? Scientists, experts, and witnesses describe these and other vividly pictured disaster scenarios, from super bugs created in secret labs to black holes that could suck earth into oblivion. Using state-of-the-art computer-generated graphics and interviews with the world's top scientists, we will leave viewers pondering humanity's place in the universe and will reveal the most terrifying truth of all--that our greatest enemy is ourselves.

In the process they spew one bs propagandist lie after another, presented as hard fact, literally saying that anyone that doesn’t agree with them is a holocaust denier, and it was about potential disasters not genocide. All this just to sell some bloody light bulbs to those too dim to know better.

What the hell is going on over there? Have they become some silly propaganda tool?
