I've also got some family in Canada
been to Ontario a few times over the years, visited Toronto, Ottawa, and a few places
went with my dad this April as he had a conference there, and I wanted to learn about some things (to see if I might do it as a job), but wasn't interested. Once again met family near Toronto.
And for the first time went to Quebec (never been to any other Canadian province before), we were at Montreal, very interesting / nice place, blend of North American and French influences.
The place I'd really like to visit though is British Columbia / Yukon area, looks really great (wildlife)

The next round goes on me! Today is my 16-th birthday, and I want to celebrate that with you! And I want to raise my glass to Peter Falk, the incredible actor, the one who is most known in his role as "Columbo". Today is his 80-th birthday, and he's still splendid as ever. He made no less than 24 Columbo movies up until now, and it is rumored that the 25-th is already on its way. A toast to the unconcentrated detective with the infamous wife which is never seen!

Well, now with the patches is playable. You should see it's first days when 2handed weapons didn't work and shields didn't defend. Those were the good old days. :D

I wish I was 16 again!
I'm turning 24 next week, I'm starting to feel old!
While we're on the subject of drinking and EB traits, has anyone noticed that the Makedonian family members in EB recieve and lose drinking traits nearly every single turn? It has to be a bug.:smash:
It's not a bug, it's a bunch of alcoholics who make resolutions to stop drinking, manage to do it for a season, then go out and get hammered, wake up, and swear they're gonna stop for real this time.
I don't drink, I'm a undecided apathetic 19yr old who has absolutely no idea what he's really interested in who's shooting for a business degree while working as a webmonkey in America.

Holidays are coming after friday, so I think then will be more action here.
Actually I have to learn for a cruel math test, so can´t spam how I wish to :book:
But anyway I´ll start a new topic:
What kind of music do you listen to?
(yeah I know, cheap and old, but effective).
Myself prefers (Post)Hardcore and some more melodic types of Heavy Metal (like
Progressive metal, and the "softer" versions of metalcore).

Yeah I like that too. Kllswitch Engage, Atreyu, 36 Crazy Fists etc etc. There's always a soft spot for Bon Scott-led AC/DC too.
Then, when my ear drums hurt, I prefer to listen to Johnny Cash, Nick Drake, Richard Thompson, John Martyn or Francis Dunnery.

*Begins to wipe the bar clean*
So, come on in, sit down and order an ale, and tell us a little bit about yourself. Where are you from? What do you do for fun? Are you still in school? Are you married with kids? This is a great place to get to know your fellow EB members and fans.

I'll take a stein of mead. Actually, several. It's been a rough week already. Nothing hard for me yet, though, as I have class in the morning.
As for me, I'm from sunny Phoenix Arizona...and now attending NAU in Flagstaff, Arizona, which is less sunny, and less warm, and overall, much easier on the eyes. When I have time, I play EB or Medieval II, as I find both fairly enjoyable.
As for me, I'd like to get married some point, as marriage is considered a good thing to have in my future career field: Orthodox Priest.

It should be called getting off the wagon, because the expression dates back to something called the Temperance movement in [America I think], when there was something called a 'temperance wagon' going around and women riding on it would invite alcoholic men to get on board as a commitment to quitting. Hence getting on the wagon would mean quitting drinking, and getting off would mean the opposite.

Yes. That was the guy who plays Cosmo Kramer....He's the reason the show is so funny really, although George and Jerry add a lot to it too....Elaine is kind of boring, but it's funny when she dances (and anyone who has seen that episode will undoubtedly agree).

Oh thank goodness! People talking absolute codswallop! I thought I was going insane just now. Read an entire, and I must say, VERY lengthy argument, quoting books I hope never to be forced to read, about who was really the stronger: the Gauls or the Germans. I mean, these people ran around yelling and wagging swords, spears and all manner of nasty in one another's faces. I'm sure they weren't calling a halt to proceedings to say: "Hang on a second Lifthelix, I think Gudiron can hoist a couple stone more than you. Slavix, bring me some extra stone!" Seriously, what if Gudiron was just having a bad hair day and he was, like: "Dude, I'm seriously not ready for competitive effort"?
And then Slavix might pop up with: "Master Traderix, me and the other slaves 'av a suggestion called democracy."
"You're a few centuries too early, good Slavix." Really, the entire might versus right thing could come crashing down right on their quiet little battlefield.
Anyway, I'll have another beer or tequila or schnapps or whatever whoever happens to be lifting bigger rocks in this place is drinking. My head is still swirling with visions of massive Gauls riding giant steeds being beat upon by a gang of unruly and pigmy-itish, mustachiod, Germanic thugs trotting about on ponies.
Ah yes the entire celtic overpowered thingy. Interesting topic bakcin it's original days now, it just feels as people are walking in circles. learned a lot from it tough!

Greetings one and all. I'll have a tankard of your finest mead thanks barkeep.
Right, then...
I'm Matt, 35 currently lead singer/guitarist of a band you've never heard of and probably wouldn't want to. I have a thing about 12-string guitars and an endless enjoyment of sound engineering, mainly in the studio.
I'm an ex-Royal Marine officer, Mountain and Arctic Warfare Cadre. I was born in Kent and raised in the Northest of England. My bloodline is Scottish, Irish, English and French and have managed to trace my roots back to being descended from Celtic and Norse/Germanic Pagans. At the moment I'm living in Exeter, Devon but will hopefully be returning back Up North (where it's not as grim as it used to be).
I'm a late arrival to RTW (bought the white-label release early this year) and got very bored with it after 2 campaigns. Discovering EB has completely changed that to the detriment of my recording schedule (I have my own home studio, so at least I'm not costing anyone a vast sum of money to the extent of never seeing any royalty payments). Still, at least it keeps me away from being overly concerned with personal mitigation Peak Oil :titanic:....hmmm, better have another tankard of mead then and get a round in for everyone else. Cheers!
Right, where was I? Oh yeah....
Since leaving the Marines I've done several life-changing things and ended up being somewhat of an anti-establishment type. The best so far was roadie for The Levellers on one tour.
I'm a huge fan of George Orwell, anything dystopian and cyberpunk and I have a large fascination with all things ancient. From one extreme to the other there I guess. The horse is a far superior mode of transport than anything powered by the infernal combustion engine. I'm also looking for a Romano-British re-enactment group to join and am working on making a shield at the moment. I've not read enough philosophy as I got stuck on Nietzsche and haven't moved on...Kirkegaard next me thinks...
I think that should do for now, so, on with the drinking and general merriment. ~

"One summer evening drunk to hell
I stood there nearly lifeless
An old man in the corner sang
Where the water lilies grow
And on the jukebox Johnny sang
About a thing called love
And it's how are you kid and what's your name
And how would you bloody know?
In blood and death 'neath a screaming sky
I lay down on the ground
And the arms and legs of other men
Were scattered all around
Some cursed, some prayed, some prayed then cursed
Then prayed and bled some more
And the only thing that I could see
Was a pair of brown eyes that was looking at me
But when we got back, labeled parts one to three
There was no pair of brown eyes waiting for me
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes
I looked at him he looked at me
All I could do was hate him
While Ray and Philomena sang
Of my elusive dream
I saw the streams, the rolling hills
Where his brown eyes were waiting
And I thought about a pair of brown eyes
That waited once for me
So drunk to hell I left the place
Sometimes crawling sometimes walking
A hungry sound came across the breeze
So I gave the walls a talking
And I heard the sounds of long ago
From the old canal
And the birds were whistling in the trees
Where the wind was gently laughing
And a rovin' a rovin' a rovin' I'll go
For a pair of brown eyes... "
To hell with war...
May your glass be ever full.
May the roof over your head be always strong.
And may you be in heaven
half an hour before the devil knows you're dead.
Here's to me, and here's to you,
And here's to love and laughter-
I'll be true as long as you,
And not one moment after.
Here's to you and yours
And to mine and ours.
And if mine and ours
Ever come across to you and yours,
I hope you and yours will do
As much for mine and ours
As mine and ours have done
For you and yours!
Health and life to you;
The mate of your choice to you;
Land without rent to you,
And death in Eirinn.
Here's a toast to your enemies' enemies!
When we drink, we get drunk.
When we get drunk, we fall asleep.
When we fall asleep, we commit no sin.
When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
So, let's all get drunk, and go to heaven!
Here's to a long life and a merry one.
A quick death and an easy one.
A pretty girl and an honest one.
A cold beer—and another one!
Here's to our wives and girlfriends:
May they never meet!
Gotta looove the Irish. One for Anthony!

GUINNESS!!!
Going to Amsterdam on Friday; should sink plenty of Amstell there. Looking forward to it!
Anyone know anything worth seeing in Amsterdam?
In't Wildeman..short walk from the railway station...sooooo many beers

Apparently Gollem is quite a good bar as well

And try Utrecht instead of Amsterdam. It's where I go to Uni. (:

If you simply want to try all kinds of beer (it isn't a tavern mind you!): Bert's Bierhuis; Twijnstraat in Utrecht.
Anyone know worth seeing anything in Amsterdam? Well, if it doesn't have to be a tavern -- typical tourist things: Van Gogh Museum; Rijksmuseum etc.
Stay away from the Paddo's some people ate them and they thought they could fly :hippie:

No, I actually want to see some of Amsterdam, not just the inside of bars (although I will see plenty of them too!).
I was hoping for something interesting, that isn't too touristy, i.e. not too expensive.

Hello everyone!!! =)
My name' s Pete, I'm from Moscow and my English is (just as always) far from perfect but I'm desperately trying to improve it =)
I guess everyone'd expect from Zee Russians to stick to vodka, but that is a common myth, that's why right now I sit here with a bottle of good south-african Shiraz (my favorite vine) and wish the same to all of you =)
The best time of year in Moscow is the golden autumn, and I'm going to spend a very pleasant evening enjoying the view outside of my window, reading news, discussions and opinions about EB and having my vine =)

One of my lifetime goals is driving from one end of russia to the other end, but unfortunately I have to wait a bit till I can make this dream come true (finish school and uni first, and of course I must earn some money :sweatdrop: ).
Well Pete, your English is a lot better than my Russian.
The problem is that even if we know some foreign words and use them, we still don't know for sure, are we using them exactly they're meant to be used or not =(
The other problem is the way we are used to construct phrases.
I'm afraid there is and always will be a language barrier between us =(
That why even though I enjoy John le Carre novels and his rich upper-class (?) language, sometimes I'm not sure what was he trying to say =)
One of my lifetime goals is driving from one end of russia to the other end...

I was once told that Russian and English are the two hardest languages to learn. Trust me, your English is very good.
I would love to learn another language. I did learn French to a decent level at school, but I've forgotten it all now. I know a little German too.
The trouble is, everyone knows English wherever you go, so its easy to just get by on other peoples knowledge.

English is very hard to learn....I often wonder how those that didn't learn it from infancy can even fully comprehend it.
Is it there, their, or they're? Is it deer or dear? Is it wear or where? So many of those types of words, even I get confused once in a great while, and I always got a's in english and spelling.
Your english is good. I say kudos to anyone who has learned a second language....I don't think I would have the patience.

English hard to learn? I had a talk to a friend of mine some months ago about this, and we ended with a list of the most difficult languages in the world:
1. Chinese (All dialects) and asian languages in general, cause of the different alphabet and stuff.
2. The click-clack language of the aboriginies
3. Russian (again the different alphabet)
4. French :skull:
English is a language of traders and sailors, so it shouldnt be so difficult to learn, because in EVERY place of the world is at least someone who speaks a little little bit english (yes, the imperial age played of course a important role).
Well, for me as a german it doesnt seem so difficult, because german and english are both germanic languages, and I dont have that much problems learning english (even if my is quite terrible) as learning latin (which is a roman language).
Well, at least we don't have so many different dialects and accents as Zee Germans do =)
So true! I could slap those damn bavarians with a large fish everytime they open their mouths and start like "sam habschon uf dr wiesn gwesn?". They are raping our language ;/

Written characters aside, English is one of the hardest languages to learn. Most languages have a set of rules that you learn and follow for the language. English has a set of rules that it always contradicts itself.
Bootsiuv

The words of english are easy enough to learn.
Using those words properly and in the correct context is something else entirely, and very difficult to master.
What are Paddos?
I like Amstel, I had it last time I was there, and it was beautiful.

Just don't use them
Somebody i know trashed his living room completely because he thought thousands of Smurfs (you know those little blue guy's with white heads) where attacking him
I don't agree with english being too hard to learn.
Well, I've always been told Portuguese is one of the harder languages to learn cause of the verbal constructions.
Cheers...

tis a sad day indeed though when many non-english speakers or those for who English is not a first language actually have a better command of English than many currently within our education system.
i.e. those who like to finish every sentence with 'yer know' or 'like' and wouldn't know the difference between there, their and they're if it were painted blue and danced on that beer filled table over there singing 'confusing grammar is here again'
Whoever you are you have no need to apologise for your English as its a lot better than some who speak it every day.

The saxons are raping german, we´re actually improving it.
And no true bavarian would ask someone from the rest of non-bavaria if he´s already been on the O-fest (foreign visitors from Australia, Italy, Britain etc, all well and good, but Germans....brrrrrr)
And before someone asks, yes, Bavarians and Germans do have a love-hate relationship - they love us, but we hate them ~D

I myself find English grammar to be pretty easy stuff. Granted, to write 100% correct English is a proverbial pain; still to write English at a decent level (without either blatant, sentence crashing grammar errors) is not so hard at all. You've got to think twice every now and then about getting your word order right; but over all the English language is a typical dicitonary-language: its real difficulties only emerge in situations when you want to use very specific words, describing a particular thing/action/event and which require you to know your trade.
As long as you don't ever attempt at speaking slang... you're good. ~;) Oh, and the retarded pronounciation, of course. (Compare spelling of the actual word, before it got all squeezed/stretched & deformed by the speaker.)
---
As for "Most difficult languages to learn": I am surprised nobody mentioned Dutch so far. As opposed to many other modern languages, Dutch uses a wide variety of vowels which aren't even uniformly spelled: more often than not surrounding consonants and the position within the whole word play their parts as well. Add to this the very loose grammar, and its tendency to be very strict when you wouldn't expect it...

Chinese is tough for westerners, I'll grant you that. ;-) I always thought Latin was the hardest, but that's only because I don't know the grammar for Greek.
Anyway. Here in the presence of so many drinkers and EB fans, I'd like to flog my own little humble work, begun in May 2004 before I met EB, but which was already a labour of love inspired by the phenomenon that was RTW. It's not exactly an AAR, being written as a fantasy novel. But its soldiers are definitely armed and behave in a way that all EB players will definitely find familiar :D It's here at http://voruna.blogspot.com, and the first post you see is the latest, so do look back in the archives to the very first one.
Here's hoping you enjoy it. I stopped writing for quite some time when I enlisted, leaving the novel fallow, but am now continuing it again. You guys and gals are going to be the first public audience I'm revealing its existence to, so I hope you merry drinkers will give me your opinion on it.
And try not to puke on it.
Not too much, anyway. XD

Saxons arent german (anymore, they were but this is like 50years ago?), they are just a bunch of annoying people living in the middle of nowhere (no joke, as I visited the Games Convention 2003, I had to drive through the old areas where the big agriculture industries were, and there is for 100km NOTHING!).
And I dont know why everyone thinks of bavaria if they think of germany; Currywurst (which WAS NOT developed in Berlin!) is so much better than Weißwurst.
Alas, my image of bavaria may be a bit..."twisted", but this may result due too much time in front of a TV (especially the series named "Heidi" crushed my image of bavaria forever).

I have to make a confession, and since I'm not religious and this place represents a bar, it's a fitting place for this: I suck as a beta tester. Bovi, being the liberal he is, doesn't believe in whipping (you bastard) and won't force me to do anything, so I've let my personal life get in the way. Anyway, since the team won't kick and whip me into doing what I'm supposed to do, I figure maybe some of you drunkards will. Whaddya say? I can't offer a prize for the hardest kicker, but maybe it'll make the next release be that much sooner. If I (or you) can force me into it, I'll actually do something useful on Sunday.

Well, I keep walking by this place every night and finally decided to wander in and check out the clientele...I'll have a Don Julio Reposado (the finest tequila known to Man) and a pint o' Bass...
I'm Phil, a wildlife conservation biologist (I think this is a first for the Tavern, eh?) from Minnesota. Yeah, I know...an eco-guy with a raging thirst for military history...not sure I really understand that one myself. Must have been my hard-ass Marine father...never took me out hunting or fishing, but had one tremendous library of history books...I'm one of the few older folks here amongst the crowd (mid-40s) and had a long history of digging deep into WW2 literature as I was growing up -- mostly late-war Eastern Front stuff. But then my older brother turned me on to R:TW about a year ago and I was an instant convert.
This is a really new period of history for me and -- by starting to work through books in "the EB Bibliography", learning from the experts here in the Tavern and elsewhere, and playing the game itself -- it's been a fantastic new hobby (much to the angry chagrin of the wife, but I gotta do what I gotta do, y'know?). I'm having a blast!!
Really looking forward to knockin' back a few with all of you as the Minnesota Arctic winter approaches...but I may have to pass on the Jager-bombs in favor of that bottle of Don Julio there on the shelf...pour me a double, will ya Bootsiuv? Now there's some fine drinkin'...

In raffles bar wasn't it? Although I believe theres a bit of a debate about the barman that actually invented it. Sorry I work in a hotel with a swanky cocktail(we actually sell the worlds most expensive) bar so some random knowledge has kinda seeped into my brain.

heh, not really, its more like a FPS or 3rd Person shooter, sept its not a shooter really, more like a Hit someone in the face with a sword.
the combat is extremely realistic, for the most part, you control the swing of your sword yourself along with your shield and such, and you can ride horses.... etc. you should really check it out, its only 20 bucks for this great game

I was nearly going to say "I can build you one for under 1000€!" but then I realized that euros are much more worth than dollars, stupid me :clown:
Ive paid ~800€ for my geforce8800gts, AMD64 X2 4400+ and 2gigs of G.E.I.L RAM, 5months ago.
Oh yeah, I had to change the watercooling unit for the CPU, which made 50€ again.
Overall, very cheap for german prices, we´ve got 19% taxes on everything (this is madness X_x)
WIC is a really really nice game, I could play it the whole day, if EB wasnt there.

Anyways, I figured, since my laptop has absolutely no chance of playing EB....I would download a mod specifically for it.
I figured I would give Rise of Persia 2.1 Beta a whirl.
All that I can say is, it's really a great mod. I've heard many people say RoP was unstable, but this newest version seems pretty good.
So, if you're bored like me and waiting for 1.0 to finish, RoP is a nice get-away from the 3rd century BC.
*as the bartender turns to go back to work, one of the shady characters throws an empty glass, which just barely misses his head.*
Blasphemy!! Get him!!
*the bartender runs for his life as the crazy shady EBers chase him down and commence to flogging him with sticks*

And now; why do you think this bar is deserted? It seems to attract some shady characters you'd rather not meet at night...
Just returned from a pretty crazy battle: 1098 people willing to die for their city's (Phraaspa) sake. Did not even have to make a move for the settlement:
they managed to kill exactly 2 Hyrkanian Hillmen;
they managed to save exactly 3 of their souls;
only the general's bodyguard (which advanced in pseuod-shieldwall :2thumbsup: for the AI; pretty cool to see :yes:) was the only unit to reach my line -whittled down to those 3 men;
only the kinsmen from Phraaspa managed to mount a charge...

So you killed 1098 people and lost 3 men?
Hmmm, sounds like a pyhrric victory which will send your empire spiraling into chaos and disarray.
How could any state possibly replace those losses? I ask you, how? :dizzy2::laugh4:

Heh, I was reading the link to the bartix thread....lmao!
I always thought Bartix was something made up by the team. I assume that this is where it originated.
I love Khelvan's initial response of 'I like cheese'. :laugh4:
Delightful, like someone was tickling my nads.
hm..... yes even that bartender is someone you wouldn't wish to meet in a dark alley way...
rofl has anyone played the romani and taken a good look at Scipio and Cotta?
I started cracking up because I had read in another thread about how scipio looks like he saw a ghost and lol boy, it was a funny experience.

No "friendly fire" caused some 40 casualties on my side. And as you might've guessed Phraaspa as a separate state exists no more... :beam:
*enter the tavern and take free bottle of pepsi* ~D
...Just started dl from our ftp, and only on tuesday it should be finished ...~:handball: :whip:

*Enters tavern, realizes he doesn't drink, orders a Sprite*
Charge, you might get much better performance out of a torrent. I don't know what kind of connection you have, but I managed to download 1.0 in less than an hour through that. A bit better than three days, certainly.
Cheers.
HAHA! 24-21 Cowboys are up on the pats, everybody didnt think we had any chance, but looks like we've got the lead at the start of the 3rd.

Well, apparently I'm now competing with Spoofa to get the job of extra video editor on the EB team. Any suggestions on what factions to use and any good custom maps? O, and go Pats.
YOU!

*walks back into the bar without a scratch and looks at the TV*
Looks like the Patriots are still winning.
What an upset.
Pats beat Cowboys...
how upsetting.
Unstoppable. This year the NFL is like a bad reality show where you know whose gonna win it in the end. Is there any doubt it's going to be the Pats? Not in my mind.

Another great game for Johnny Wilkinson. That drop-goal was fantastic.( The french were fantastic too - i'm sorry for them). I hope that England will beat South Africa. Come on England!!!
And on onother note, we have beatten Netherlands at football :jumping: (soccer for the US patrons) by 1 goal to 0, and we are at the top of our group.
