Introduction

FN 03.gif

The Northumbrians are about medium difficulty. Their starting position makes them vulnerable to Viking raids, but they can easily protect their land borders. The Viking raid on Lindisfarne is the historical basis to the start of Viking Invasion, so the Northumbrian player can expect to be raided.

Tactics

The Northumbrians can be easy or hard. They have the Scots and Picts to the north, the Welsh and Mercians to the south, a heavily fortified rebel outpost in Reget nearby, and coastal provinces all around. The land borders can be sealed at Dere/Pec Saetan and Lothene/Cumbri (Reget?), so it's probably best to get an alliance with the Vikings first and foremost. Once that is done, troop provinces and trade can be built up.

If the Mercians and Saxons begin a war, it's probably best to jump in if possible. Allowing the Mercians to win this war will make things extremely difficult for the Northumbrians, since the Mercians will be able to train endless hordes of Huscarles with the resulting cash flow.
