VI Mercians
Contents
Introduction
The Mercians are probably the easiest (non-Viking) faction to play in the Viking Invasion expansion. Their starting position allows them to expand fairly easily, and their unit options are strong and varied.

Faction Specific Units
Tactics
The Mercians starting position has two big advantages. Their lands are rich and, aside from Lindissi, they are land-locked and thus protected from Viking sea raids. The downside to this is that they are surrounded by the Welsh, Saxons, and Northumbrians. The Welsh and Northumbrians will probably have other problems, the Saxons are the ones to worry about.
The Mercians get the same units as the Saxons, plus the addition of Urban Militia, Militia Sergeants, and Mounted Sergeants. The Militia units give the Mercians a cheaper, more expendable armour-piercing option aside from Huscarles, and can be used to flank armoured enemy units that are pinned by Fyrdmen. Mounted Sergeants give the Mercians a decent light cavalry shock unit. Decent troops in all categories allow the Mercians to adjust to the different combat strengths and weaknesses of the other factions.
Conventional wisdom is to take down the Saxons as soon as possible. The longer they have, the more Huscarles you will face in the end.
