Cool, I've been waiting for this since someone mentioned it in the minecraft thread.
Count me in, will join soon.
Edit:
What times will the server be online?
I am guessing it is around American timezone when TinCow is awake.
Barring power outages or other errors, it will be on 24/7. I never turn that computer off.
Hmmm. Can't connect: "Connection Refused"

I'll have to try it.
I'm curious about what these "org repercussions" would be though.

I'm curious about what these "org repercussions" would be though.
I would request that the Mods issue warnings or infractions, depending on the severity of the act. Not that I ever expect to have to do such a thing, of course. Orgahs do not tend to be the kind of people that grief.
Woo! Sorry about it being down earlier. Somehow it shut down over night for reasons I do not know. Please let me know how the connection is and whether it's laggy at all. The only load testing I've done on it has consisted of 2 people online, both from LAN. I have no idea how it will handle 2+ over the net. I did some reading which indicated that 16 players is the max my setup can handle, so I've set that as the current cap. However, it's possible that may be an optimistic number.
For the record, the server is located in the Washington, DC area, so keep that in mind if you are connecting from another country.
300ms for me, seems very reasonable, but I died straight away due to the brightness settings and it being night-time, hah.
I will afk on it for load testing reasons then.

(Yes, i am hiding in a hole in the wall)
So err, what settings are you using?
And are there any plans to build a massive ORG monument?
I am up for writing "ORG" in that mountain side in the picture.
So err, what settings are you using?
All settings are default, except PvP which is Off. Monster and animals spawns are on, view distance set to 10, etc.
And are there any plans to build a massive ORG monument?
I was planning on making a huge Org, but will likely be doing it near my base. Scienter and I have already built a large floating castle between three mountains, with the usual mines and construction support facilities nearby. I'll post coordinates to it when I get home. There are lots of interesting mountains in that area.
Took me forever, but I found some trees. Quickly built a "mud house", make a crafting table, a chest, put stuff I collected in the chest then died!
If you find any of the new-fangled NPC villages or abandoned mines, post coordinates to them. I've never actually found one in-game and would like to see it.

Vanilla 1.8.1? To be quite honest, vanilla is extremely boring. I like the wide varieties of server mods that are available.
I like how there is a big floating "HI" where you spawn.
I like how there is a big floating "HI" where you spawn.
Does everyone spawn in the same place? When Scienter first joined, she spawned halfway across the world from my construction site (which is relatively near my own spawn) and had to hike for multiple game days to reach me. Thank god for beds.
Not sure, but I keep respawning in the same place and some one created a big floating "HI" there. So I assume I am not the only one.
But if you are an admin, you can set a spawn point, I believe...

What are the coordinates to the spawn point? I might trek out there and build a new player welcome area that has some signs, supplies, and a safe place to stay if it's night.

Spacebar. If you're joking, I'm sorry for being a gullible idiot :laugh4:
And, in case you didn't already know, here's the link to the minecraft wiki (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki), which you will need for all the crafting recipes, etc.
EDIT: So I just tried to join, and I wasn't able to because I have the 1.9 pre-release. You can get the pre-release here (http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/744911-195-pr-is-ready-for-), but if you don't want to do that, that's fine, I'll just wait until it comes out officially.
Thanks for letting us play in your server, TinCow
Several of us did some work tonight. There is now a newbie hotel with supplies and safety right outside the spawn point, with a huge ORG sign, and a lighted road all the way to Scienter's castle. It's all pretty utilitarian so far, but it'll get better.

Still, it was fun. I have some ideas for tonight.

Hmmm... I suppose I could create a bit of a safe area on the exact spawn point, with a path to the noob hotel. Is the spawn point at 0,0,0?

The spawn point seemed to change a little and I didn't always land in the water. I don't know the exact coordinates. I'll have to check them when I get home.
Once I learned how to swim it wasn't that bad.

There is a spawn area I think. It is around that little island by the noob hotel.

I'll expand that island a little bit and encase the entire thing in glass, with a nice path leading to the hotel. If anyone spawns outside of the area, we can just expand it further until people always spawn inside. In any case, there are beds in the hotel, so spawning at that island shouldn't have to happen more than once. There's also a bed in the workshop near Scienter's Castle, and we'll eventually have several beds in the castle itself.

Awesome, I'm known as the 3_Headed_Monkey and I wear a very cheap looking suit.
We hit 7 people online simultaneously tonight, and I think we started feeling a bit of slowdowns as a result. More testing will be required, but it's possible that I might need to drop the cap down to 10 or 8.

So here are some screenshots I took while playing tonight

The first one is in a pretty cool ravine I found while mining that I've been able to gather a lot of resources from, I'll post the coordinates for it tomorrow. The second one was a glitch, I tried to jump in and I got stuck, so I had to exit the server and then when I got back in it was gone.

I also found a spider spawner in the abandoned mine TinCow found. I put torches and a sign at the beginning of the tunnel that leads there in case anyone wanted to do anything with it.
Sorry about it being down. It had some kind of overflow error and died. I've restarted it.

That was hilarious, yet a little sad. Got a little lost last night. Now I have about 100 torches to make sure that doesn't happen again.
It's a shame water doesn't flow more than seven spaces. I really wanted to make that aqueduct.
It's a shame water doesn't flow more than seven spaces. I really wanted to make that aqueduct.
You can make an aqueduct, but you need to start it from a high place. I've used aqueducts for farming purposes before and it's not too difficult to get the water to go where you want, you just need to start with sufficient altitude at the source. If you built the aqueduct from the top of a nearby mountain, I bet you'd have enough of a vertical drop to get it where you want it to go.
Another option is just to cheat. A single water source will only propagate 7 squares, but you could use many water sources to make it look like a level aqueduct, even if the water isn't actually flowing via in-game mechanics.
A third option would be to use pistons. If you set up an automated circuit, you could use pistons to raise the water level on individual squares for a few moments, which would result in further propagation down the aqueduct. If you timed the piston sequence properly, you could use it to send small spurts of water down the aqueduct even if it was totally level. That would be a lot of work though.
If you find any of the new-fangled NPC villages or abandoned mines, post coordinates to them. I've never actually found one in-game and would like to see it.
There are plenty on my actual server. If you're ever online I can PM you the IP and teleport you to some. I'll have a look for some tonight.
Edit: Found one. My personal lag (due to connection from Aus) means often chunks load too slow, so what's around underneath is visible.
----
Also, anyone want stuff built with redstone/logic gates/pistons let me know and I can help out.
Vladimir
11-03-2011, 14:31
Using a piston is interesting. I'm not that advanced in my gameplay yet but I'll have to come up with some ideas. It's difficult to find a source of water that's high enough up.
Can you use buckets to create an artificial lake? I may have to try that.
Flowing water would be amazing though.
Can you use buckets to create an artificial lake? I may have to try that.
Yep.
I've ordered more RAM for the server, to bring it up to 4gb. I think that will help performance a bit. It should arrive this weekend or early next week. I'll see how it performs with that upgrade and if it would help I'll also get a small SSD just for the game.
Vladimir
11-03-2011, 15:36
Yep.
This is exciting. Maybe I can cheat to create the optical effect I want. Dump water every six tiles to fill up the aqueduct.
Lava waterfalls would be nice too.
I'm going to transform TC's server into Dante's Inferno. ~;)
Lava waterfalls would be nice too.
I built one last night. It's coming out of the glass-topped turret that's near Scienter's castle. I was planning on making a really deep shaft for the lava to pour into, but got distracted by another project, so it's currently just scorching the grass on the fields far below.

Is it, for some reason, impossible to place or destroy blocks near the pathway? I ask this because there was a large patch of clay that wanted to harvest that was under 1 block of water nearby the noob hotel, but I couldn't destroy any of the clay. Nor could I destroy the sand or dirt that was also nearby underwater. Failing this, I tried to place dirt in the water, but those blocks disappeared as well.
Is the pathway and its surroundings invincible or am I encountering a bug?
It is because it's the spawn area I guess. I have some clay if you want it though.
Is it just me or is there not many animals in the world? I see a bunch of sheep roaming around. Not that many pigs, cows, and chickens anymore.
Populus Romanus
11-05-2011, 07:48
Not just you. I think it might have something to do with the biome we are in. For instance, very few trees.
Yeah, it's just the biome near the starting area. There are tons and tons of animals elsewhere. There's a huge forest relatively near the noob hotel that has a lot of animals. I was out hunting them yesterday.
Plus, I'm not sure about cows, pigs, and sheep, but chickens can be farmed. Scienter already has a working chicken farm. Agriculture is definitely the easiest way to get food in the long-term.
Speaking of animals, animals don't spawn anymore in 1.8 because they're planning on replacing spawning with animal breeding, but breeding itself isn't going to be implemented until 1.9, so I suggest killing animals sparingly until 1.9 comes out.
There's a serious lag issue on the server at the moment due to experience orbs dropping after death. This is a game bug, not a server issue, and I've taken the server offline while I look for a fix.
Ok, the server is fixed now and is back online.

Is the server down again?
The Org server is now up. It is running Pre-release version 1.9.5. You must update your client software to be able to connect. All you need to do is download the new minecraft.jar (http://bit.ly/tnnArW) file and replace your old file with it. The default location for this file is:
Win XP: C:\Users\USERNAME\Application Data\.minecraft\bin\
Win 7: C:\USERS\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\.minecraft\bin\
I mainly installed this update to fix the experience orb bug that's forced me to do manual resets on the server a couple times now. However, it also adds a ton of other stuff, including breeding, potions, enchanting, repair, etc. You can read all the additions in the various pre-release versions here (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Version_history/Development_versions#B1.9pre5).
Edit: Fixed it, it is now working properly.
Make sure your java is updated to the latest version. (http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp)

I got tired of getting blown up on TC's server so I've been getting blown up on my own computer.
I'm really impressed with the world so far. Very fertile and diverse. There's also a little pond that acts like a tar pit. Once animals get in, they don't get out. I was going to make a stable but I think I'll just keep going back there.
I've got a pretty well-stocked farm on the top of my mountain now. If anyone needs materials to get their own farm started, you are welcome to take some supplies. I have wheat seeds, melon seeds, pumpkin seeds, cactus, and sugarcane. You can find most of it in one of the chests in the Garden Shack on top of the mountain, though some might be in the food chest in my main workshop. Just don't take it all. I also have all varieties of livestock, if someone needs some for breeding purposes. If you take one, all I ask is that you breed a new baby or two while you're there.
Scienter and I also completed a railway between her place and mine. I kind of have a dream now of turning it into an Orgcraft Public Transit System, with stops at all major destinations. I think the main line could continue from Scienter's castle to Tiaexz's Pyramid, then to the noob hotel, and off to Csargo's Lighthouse. Those could all be done with a single line without making it too circuitous. We could then add separate 'spurs' going to spots which aren't quite on the way. However, this will take an absolutely enormous amount of resources. Just building the line from my place to Scienter's ate up several dozen stacks of cobblestone, a full stack of iron (maybe more), and half a stack of gold. If anyone else feels like contributing to this project, we could use resource donations.
Vladimir
11-07-2011, 16:59
I'd like to help with the resource gathering. I'm just playing around with construction ideas and the game in general. I added a lot of Redstone to the hotel and for fun I could do some more digging.

Can't find it with Vista. Maybe I should get win 7.
The AppData folder is usually hidden so that may be why you can't find it.
If you don't know how to do that, neither do I but I looked it up for you:
(translated from German, exact phrasing may differ, also done in Win 7 but the explorer stuff is mostly the same I think)
Go to you user folder where the AppData should be.
Upper left corner in the folder: Organise -> Folder and Search options
Select the "View" - Tab in the middle, scroll down the list
"Hidden Files and Folders" should have two options, select the one that shows them, click "OK".
Now your AppData Folder should show up
If that's not it, I'm afraid I don't know either.

I can't get it to work. I can never get anything to work. Why must I be so incompetent with technology? WHY?!?!
I use a batch file so I can play it within my game folder.
set APPDATA=%CD%\data
bin\minecraft.exe
So make a folder called "Minecraft" and in notepad, copy the quote, then save it, and change the extension to ".bat" instead of ".txt"
Now create two folders, "bin" and "data", place the 'Minecraft.exe' within the "bin" folder. Now doubleclick the batch file.
If it works as I think it will. It will recreate the data files within the data folder and use those files everytime you use the .bat

Thanks Hussar,
That's what I usually do with Vista but couldn't find it for some reason last night. Somehow blackberry witbier and a desire to finish my log cabin distracted me from exploring too much.
Plus, I'm getting lazy. I've used computers for so long I expect everything to be in an executable file that knows and sees all like the mind of God.
On the cabin: It's so expensive to build a roof at a 45 degree angle. It's expensive to build a log cabin in general! It's more expensive then getting blown up and loosing a dozen bars of gold.
And I couldn't find my magical pig producing pond last night!
And I couldn't find my magical pig producing pond last night!
Be careful about constantly killing wild animals. They only respawn in the wild very rarely, so if you are regularly killing them you will depopulate your part of the world. This will eventually make it difficult for you to find animals when you want to breed them. It took me about 4 game days to get 2 each of sheep, cattle, and pigs, and I already had 1 cow penned up before I started.
Chickens are far easier, as you can hatch them from eggs. Just get about 6-8 eggs and toss them on the ground inside your pen. Odds are that will be enough to produce 2 chickens. That's far easier than leading them around.
Also, at the moment I am desperately in need of slimeballs. I have yet to see a single slime in the entire game, and slimeballs are vital for the testing phase of version 3 of the rail system, as well as a gate system that I have planned for a long time but been unable to construct due to lack of slimeballs. If it helps to get some incentive to hunt for slimes, I will exchange 1 diamond for each slimeball someone brings me, up to a maximum of 20.
Vladimir
11-08-2011, 15:02
Yea, I need to update to start pig farms. I didn't kill any of them previously, just let them sit and jump around while trying to escape. I've been eating a lot of bread and rotten flesh recently. It's almost impossible to find a chicken but I did spot what looked like a black sheep; not a cow. I really want calamari.
For some reason I can't extract seeds from a pumpkin. I need to try and upgrade tonight.
Is there any way to upload saves to compare worlds?
You really shouldn't eat rotten flesh unless you're totally desperate. It almost always gives you food poisoning, which makes your hunger increase rapidly. It's counter-productive in the long-run. If you want an easier to get food source, go fishing. Fish are infinite and all you need is some string and sticks for a fishing rod.
If by, "upload saves" you mean make a SP world visible to other players, yes. You just need to compress the world folder into a file and upload it for someone else to download. They then place it in their minecraft directory and select that world from the in-game list.
So I'm planning to join soon (I've been wanting to since I saw this post, but WoT has been taking up all my time. My current dreams all involve heavy artillery mauling Tigers)...but when I join I was wondering if it might be possible for me to get a few 'extra' resources to err....jumpstart my castle. :sneaky:

I hope the full release of minecraft is an automatic update, not a manual install. I think I might never be able to get back on the server if it is a manual install, given the problems I am having with the new patch put on. D:
I finally found some slimes and managed to make six sticky pistons... then I realized I didn't really need sticky pistons to make the railway work. :wall:
Anyway, the first section of the railway from my place to Scienter's is now operational. I've put up signs explaining how it works, but will post it here as well for clarity. All you do is place a minecart on the downward sloping rail in the station you are in. Then, enter the minecart, and hit the button. You will then go to the next station and stop. At that point, if you want to continue to the next station on the line, just hit the button again and you'll keep going. When you reach your final destination, get out of the cart, remove the cart from the track, and place it in the dispenser at whichever station you are at.
It's not the best system in the world, but it works and that's good enough for now. I will be extending the rail line to the pyramid tomorrow, and from there to the noob hotel and then to Csargo's lighthouse. Once we have an operational railway, we can begin looking at more user-friendly systems.
Divine Wind
11-09-2011, 15:49
Good work on the rail system! I'll have a go when I get back from work.
Is it easy to get animals to follow you over water? I found a lot of animals north of my home across the water. Was considering making an underground animal farm.
Did you need any items for the noob hotel since the problems yesterday? I have a lot of spare resources.
Tried to make it so the Pyramid had a multi-junction which one goes to the hotel and the other goes to Csargo since it is inbetween them, then have those two linked (creating a loop). Didn't go exactly to plan, having some redstone troubles.
Is it easy to get animals to follow you over water? I found a lot of animals north of my home across the water. Was considering making an underground animal farm.
They move a lot slower. If it's a long distance over water, it might be a very annoying trip.
Did you need any items for the noob hotel since the problems yesterday? I have a lot of spare resources.
It was fine last I checked. We restocked it with most of the essentials and we don't get new players too frequently so they don't get depleted rapidly. Actually, until yesterday it seemed like people actually put more stuff into the place than they took out.
I do need to do another expansion on the spawn building though. I respawned there a day or two ago after a death and still fell in the water. On reading up, it seems spawning can occur in a 20x20 box around the center point, so the building needs to be larger to accommodate that area.
Tried to make it so the Pyramid had a multi-junction which one goes to the hotel and the other goes to Csargo since it is inbetween them, then have those two linked (creating a loop). Didn't go exactly to plan, having some redstone troubles.
Good luck with that, multi-destination railway stations for use on multiplayer servers have been about the most complex constructions I've seen yet in minecraft. If you get a system working, you can teach the rest of us so we can implement it in our various stops.
I think it would also be a decent idea to eventually extend the railways out into the wilderness, to make it easier for people to expand. It's not a coincidence that most of the construction has occurred along the main highway from the noob hotel to Scienter's place, and along the extension to my place. People want to build near transport networks, so putting out rail lines to currently undeveloped biomes might get people building out there as well. Plus, it will make exploration a bit easier as well. That's something to consider after we've hooked up all the main areas though.
For the record, I think we should try and always have the railway line be elevated or underground for security purposes. As you can see from the main road, lighting doesn't guarantee safety on flat ground because the mobs will spawn in the dark area and then walk into the lighted area. The last thing anyone wants while riding in a minecart is to see a creeper on the tracks ahead of them, with no way to stop the cart. If we keep the line elevated at least a few squares, then nothing will be able to wander onto it. The same would work for underground rails that are in completely confined tunnels.
Good luck with that, multi-destination railway stations for use on multiplayer servers have been about the most complex constructions I've seen yet in minecraft. If you get a system working, you can teach the rest of us so we can implement it in our various stops.
I saw a video on how to do a two-way switch on youtube which was very similar to my own, but the problem with mine is that the track piece is surrounded on 4 sides and even putting redstone underneath the block doesn't seem to be working, which is causing the problems.

Post the video you're looking at, I'm curious to see which one you're working off of. This is the one I was following for version 2 of the station:

I liked the idea of it automatically shuffling the carts around so that no picking up/placing of carts was required. However, that led to the issue where we would have needed an ungodly amount of gold to create enough powered rails to propel an empty cart up our hills. I didn't see that as feasible.

I'm starting to enjoy this little game. Obsidian mining takes a while but is beautiful and can make a tidy little fortress.
Seems like the server went down. Ended up distracted with other things with it on in the background. Now I can no longer find the server.
Sorry about that, I'll get it back up when I get home in a few hours. The housekeeper should be there about now, so it's possible she hit the power cord or something.
Worth noting as well that Scienter and I will both be pre-loading Skyrim tonight, so there might be a bit of lag if Steam eats up too much of the bandwidth.
There is an easy way to fix it if you have the ability to transfer within your network. Only one of you preloads it and then send a copy of the preload to the other.
Might be faster.

Hmmm... never thought of that. I may give that a try, as an internal transfer would definitely be faster than a second d/l.

The only side effect is the infinite amount of water generated.

It wasn't a server problem, my router lost connection for some reason. I've reset it and my connection appears to be working again, so the server should be reachable again.
NOTE: I just realized that my home IP address has changed. The new IP for the server is 74.96.163.86

Are you mining in the wild or in an artificial obsidian farm? I ask, because an obsidian farm shouldn't generate excess water, and it's also much safer.

Both? I found a mulch-chambered lava source in a deep mine and have been cooling it to make obsidian.
I'm doing some single player experiments. Since water moves faster than lava I'm using it to counter lava flows when mining. Depending on the distribution of bedrock, I seem to generate extra water. I had to waste some of it because I ran out of buckets. I would dump one bucket in an area and easily recover two after a lot of digging. Maybe it's a bug.
Water can produce infinite water. A water block becomes 'harvestable' when the water is at the maximum height in the block. If there are multiple 'source' water blocks next to a single block, they will fill it to the max height and thus make that block a source as well.
More info here:
http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Water#Infinite_Spring_Duplication
For me, I prefer to farm obsidian because of the hazards of multi-layer lava sources, where the obsidian block drops into the lava level below it and burns up before it can be grabbed. Let's just say I had some bad accidents in a previous world...

Okay, two questions:
When I download 1.9.5, I get a .zip. Am I supposed to extract these files before I replace the originals with them, or leave them as a .zip?
How do you start minecraft? I ask because there is no "Play Minecraft" option anywhere I can see, which has been forceing me to start minecraft by redownloading it everytime I want to play it (From this page: http://www.minecraft.net/download). That means that the minecraft I have installed on my computer isn't actually being used, if my interpretation is correct. What am I missing?

You are using the wrong version, 1.9.5 only comes in .jar format, so if you're getting an .exe that's the wrong download. Follow the instructions in this post (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?138824-Org-Minecraft-Server&p=2053394387&viewfull=1#post2053394387). All you have to do is replace a single file (minecraft.jar) from the original installation, then it will run as normal. You should not be re-downloading the file each time. Download it once, put it in a folder, and run it. Then just click the exe, or a shortcut to the exe, each time you want to play.
All right I managed to log in. My nick is diain.

Yea, but this is from a single bucket. I've been burned on numerous occasions but the fact that water flows faster than lava helps mitigate the risk. It occasionally helps flush some deposits from tight spots.
It's a handy building material and the most reliable exotic. Now I need to find a way to predict gold deposits to help you guys with your powered rails.

For those of you not busy slaying dragons, above is a link to my most recent Minecraft save file. I'm dedicating my work to Tincow and all the others that helped get me involved in the game. It should spawn you at X -272, Z 442.5. Please let me know if you experience any problems.
I wanted to spend most of my time in single player to ensure I had a copy of the file. Mostly though, I fell in love with the map. My intent is to figure out redstone circuitry as it's taking up a lot of storage space.
I encourage any comments or critiques.

Yeah, Scienter and I are pretty well dug into it. I can pretty much guarantee we won't be in Minecraft for the rest of this week. We'll be back eventually, but we're both Bethsoft addicts and we must feed the urge.
Just for the record, I'll be borrowing a bed from the noob hotel for a little while, because my base is still under construction and I lost my wool in a creeper attack. More importantly I'm tired or running around looking for sheep at the moment.

The server has been upgrade to the latest version, which is the 'final' (yeah, right) release version. It is, quite oddly, listed as version 1.0.0.
I just logged in to mine a bit. Collected rock for sometime but when I went back to deposit in my box I realised that all my gold, diamonds, and my iron are missing. Is this a bug due to the new update? Because I disconnected and reconnected and they still weren't there.

Another heist? That's why my golden castle is in single player.
I'm also missing my armour which I'd stored in my chest to prevent for later use.
If it's a heist then it's no fun.
I can't imagine why anyone would steal stuff when everyone I've met on the server yet, are so generous anyway. I was saving the diamonds for later when I might've needed to mine Obsidian but I wouldn't have refused anyone who might've needed them for some current project.

I'll look into it when I get home, I have a feeling it's another thief. I'll see if there's a way to restrict access to only forum members. If so, I'll require people to get on the forums and register so that we know who they are before they can even connect.
[edit]Yeah, there's a whitelist command. I'll enable that this evening and put all Org members on the list. I will then only add new people to the list once they've posted in this thread or contacted me personally in some other way.
The minecraft server's been pretty deserted these past few days (AFAIK), so can't you just look at the server log and find out the IPs of who all logged in? That might narrow stuff down.

Yep. I usually look at it every a couple times a day (while Skyrim is loading up :creep:). There's definitely been at least one new name on there in the last day or two, and that's probably our culprit. Since there hasn't been any posts in this thread about someone else joining, it's probably a non-Orgah.
Turning on the whitelist should take care of the problem from now on. As you noted, it's not an issue with Org members. If you need some supplies in the meantime, you're welcome to take some stuff from my place, including some diamond. Just don't take it all. If you find the location of some structure that looks like this new person has created it, please post the coordinates so I can go take a look at it.
I'll look around to see, if I find something new. At present what I really need is rock and I have enough of that. Might need some armour later on but hopefully I'll manage that too. Thanks though.
It's just that those diamonds were so shiny. I got lucky and hit six veins in two days in the same mine.
Might I suggest that if you do manage to narrow it down to some IP address, put it in the banned players list.....

Is there an easy way to edit existing maps?
I'd like to import my project into the org server. It should be as simple as a sort of copy and paste using the grid system.
Ok, the server is now running on a whitelist, which means people cannot join unless they have been pre-approved. The whitelist currently consists of:
*TinCow
*Scienter
*Tiaexz
*IonizedExistence
3_Headed_Monkey
Csargp
Chuchip
ORGVladimir
PopulusRomanus
pestmeesters
diain
* = People with ops. Anyone with ops can add a name to the whitelist, and all have my permission to add any names to the list according to their own best judgment.
People who have played on the server before but who I have not added to the whitelist because I do not know who they are (apologies if you are on this list, it's hard for me to keep track of Orgahs who have different names in minecraft):
Angelecticea
@lateraldeath
magnias
MathewC
#Mojopin
#Ninja_Tom
wuzie69
# = banned for previous actions, will not be added regardless.
@ = people who have logged on since the 1.0.0 upgrade. One or more of them is likely responsible for the theft of rajpoot's stuff.
If anyone knows who any of the people on the second list are, or can otherwise vouch for them being respectful players, let me know and I will add them.

Sorry about that. You're whitelisted now.
Thanks.
BTW I ran around for a bit today, and couldn't find anything new (did run into some neat stock of sugarcane a bit way away from my WIP castle). Then I noticed quite a few of the 'field' blocks near the noob hotel where I'd planted wheat had been harvested, so I'm assuming that this player did plan to settle in. Anyway point is if anyone else runs across any stuff he might've dropped/stored (unless he's was carrying everything), I'd be grateful if they'll inform. I lost around 8 blocks of iron, 20 pieces of diamond and some 12 pieces of gold if I remember rightly.
If anyone would like to explore and/or work in The Nether, I now have a portal at my house which leads to a secure outpost in the Nether. There are some basic items for work in the outpost, including a crafting table, furnace, and bed. I've coated the exterior of the tunnel leading to the main cavern with cobblestone to make it a bit more Ghast-resistant, but as always The Nether is pretty dangerous when Ghasts are around, so be careful (the bed is there for a reason).

Is it a sad state of affairs when you miss your computer for want of a game? I should really get a laptop.
Does the version 1 game have all the functionality of the 1.9 beta?
Anyone building anything new?
This is amazing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfsPdhekTVA&feature=youtube_gdata_player.
Does the version 1 game have all the functionality of the 1.9 beta?
Anyone building anything new?
Version 1 has everything that the latest 1.9.X version did, plus some bug fixes and final features like a fully implemented End dimension (with Ender Dragon).
I've added a fair bit to my house. A new second floor hallway which leads to a rear overlook and a portal room to the Nether. I also improved my workshop with a piston-driven Obsidian farm and a piston-driven garbage disposal. I've been gathering a fair amount of glowstone from the Nether as well, so I constructed a safehouse in the Nether on the other side from my portal. This evening I also started work on the next leg of the railway, leading to Csargo's place. I completed the cobblestone route to lay the tracks on, but I haven't finished laying track or lighting it. It's a really, really long run and it's going to take a lot more resources than I currently have to lay all that track. I put down 9.5 stacks of railroad tracks and I don't think I even got halfway. I'm now out of iron, so if anyone wants to contribute some iron or tracks to the project, it would certainly help.
Thanks, in part, to some generous soul who laid down a lot of track, the railroad extension to Csargo's lighthouse is now complete. It could use some more powered rails in a few spots, but it still works as it stands. Csargo, I've taken the liberty of creating a very rough station at the entrance to your place. Please feel free to move the station, and the railway leading into it, anywhere you want. I just placed the simple station where I did because I didn't want to create it inside your area without your permission. I'd also like to run the next leg from your place down your roadway/tunnel to the noob hotel, but since it would involve laying track on your existing road, I don't want to do it without your permission.
FYI, I do intend to keep extending the railway. Everyone is free to alter the 'stations' at their houses however they see fit. You can move them wherever you want and design them however you want, just make sure the system still works when you're done.

I put down as much track as I could with the iron I had. You can put the track on the road I made, I am fine with that. It does get dangerous at night though, so may want to protect it in some way.

Glass walled railway? Sounds cool.
Yeah, security is an issue. The pyramid station isn't incredibly safe either, but I don't want to mess with the current setup without Tiaexz's input. For now, I've just lighted most of the flat plain around the station (and the buried areas under it) which has reduced a lot of the spawns. Security, and the view, is the reason I prefer an elevated rail line. It's not a big deal for roads to be a bit more dangerous, but I feel like the rail line should be pretty much guaranteed safe, which generally means elevated when it's not in a station. Perhaps I'll cut a new tunnel from the lighthouse to the noob hotel that's parallel to the existing road but a bit higher on the mountain. It's a long-term project in any case, as I think we're all about out of iron anyway.
Monkey wants to be hooked up as well, and the simplest option would be to just run a short line from his place to Scienter's station. However, since we don't have any method of switching lines, it would have to be a dedicated loop and changing trains at Scienter's station would be required to continue further. Another option would be to just turn the entire system into a loop. We've already kind of taken part of a looping route by going out to the lighthouse from the pyramid before turning in to the noob hotel. We could then continue that rail, running somewhat parallel to the main road, but off in the forest a bit. If we had the rail line that way follow the main road, it could stop at Populus' place and Monkey's place, and then link into my station to form a completed loop. diain's castle could probably be incorporated into it somehow as well. That would be kind of cool, but it would require a TON more iron. I also like the idea of running rail lines out into the wilderness, to encourage expansion in the 'suburbs.' There's a snow biome a ways out from my own house which I would like to hook up (ski resort!) but it seems wrong to spend resources on that when the main 'commuter' rail line remains unfinished.
If anyone has seen any videos about creating a simple switching station for multiple destinations, please post it. This whole thing would be a lot easier if we could just link single lines in anywhere with a standardized switching station, but I haven't been able to find any that aren't exceptionally complex. Our current station format could also use some improvement. They work, but they're certainly not ideal and can sometimes be buggy.
Has anyone tried enchanting, btw?
[edit]NM about the track switch, I found a good video:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=JWl_is9hdF4
I didn't realize it could be that simple. I'll do some testing with that kind of setup this evening. If it works properly, we can just link in individual legs of railway anywhere.
I did a test of that switching system last night, with buried circuitry, and it works perfectly fine. Amazingly elegant, actually. Incorporating it into our double-line network (which is still required to prevent collisions) will be a bit more complex and stations which have destination switches will have to be a fair bit larger than they are right now. The first station this will have to be implemented at will be Scienter's, to hook up Monkey's house. Given where she built her station, it shouldn't be too difficult to expand it. However, for anyone else building stations to be hooked up later, it would be a pretty good idea to make sure that you've got room to expand the size of the place. I think something like an area of 10x10 would probably be a good size to start with, and make sure that we can dig down two squares below the surface without causing problems as well. I consider the actual construction of the rail lines to be a public project, but the specific placement of stations should be left up to the person whose property they are stopping at. Signage will also have to increase a lot as well, to make clear exactly which switches do what and which lines go where.
Monkey's a her?!
I mean I thought there were no girls on the Internet :clown:
Monkey's a her?!
I mean I thought there were no girls on the Internet :clown:
I'm pretty sure Monkey is a he. Scienter is the her.
I finished my chicken farm tonight which I like very much. Tincow completed the railway from my house to the noob hotel. I built an enchantment table and enchanted my sword and pickaxe. It is really weird how they've done it since you pick from three random numbers and get a random attribute on the item you enchant. My sword's enchantment makes spiders, zombies, and skeletons easier to kill and using my pickaxe has a chance of not losing durability after a use.
Does anyone still get on the server? The only person who I have seen on the last few time is Tincow.
I think many are still playing Skyrim. Despite putting in 70+ hours, I haven't even finished the main quest line. I intend to go back and finish it up eventually, but I'm more eager to play Minecraft each night. It's a pretty awesome situation when the choice about which game to play is between two superb open world games like these.
So, yeah, the first significant phase of development on the railroad is now complete. It needs a fair bit of polish: more signage at the noob hotel explaining the system for anyone new to the server, the rails in Csargo's station are a total mess, and the elevated areas need 'support' columns in many, many places as it looks weird just levitating everywhere. However, I am now done with this as my main project. I am happy to help anyone else who wants to be hooked up to the network, but I will not be building further extensions to other players' buildings on my own initiative. I have several projects I want to complete in my own house first.
Gah who changed the landscaping of the wheat farm!
Ah, sorry, that was me. I didn't think that had been used for a long time and it was blocking the area I wanted to use for the noob hotel train station. I'll rebuild it for you nearby.

No no...no problem. I got enough wheat/seeds/bread stored away.
Just saw the station. Very nice job
Monkey gave me some iron a few days back but I don't require all of it right now. You're welcome to take some of that from my chest if you require it to extend the railway line.

I'm honestly not comfortable with importing anything into the game from another server. It seems to defeat the purpose of starting a server from scratch and building a world from nothing.

My PC died on Tuesday, so I'm currently trying to source the parts for a new one. Hopefully be back on the server next week.
And I most certainly not a lady! :laugh4:
Some significant public works were done yesterday. First, we located a Nether Fortress and built a very basic road to it to guide other players. It can be accessed through either Tiaexz's portal or my own. Just follow the cobblestone to the fortress. Please do not destroy the Blaze spawners! Blazes do not spawn outside of Nether Fortresses, so that's our source of blaze rods. Also, be aware that the road is not safe, go at your own peril. We have also located a stronghold and built an above ground building with direct access to the End Portal inside the stronghold. Unfortunately it's not very easy to get to at the moment and we don't have enough eyes of ender to open the portal, but we will soon.
In addition, here's a map of the most of the 'settled' area of our world, thanks to Tiaexz. Once it's more filled in, I will annotate it.
https://img254.imageshack.us/img254/350/downloadwc.png
The map is great.
Which program did Tiaexz use to get it?
Journey Map (http://dev.bukkit.org/client-mods/journeymap/)
Right, thanks.
On a different note, does anyone know how the in-game maps work? I made one today and it was labeled map_4. It showed only a limited area (from Noob hotel to Tiaexz pyramid on one side) and when I went beyond that I went off the map.
So how does one make a map 'center' on a different point? Or is there some way to join separate maps...because I read the wiki and couldn't find much there.
Also can players exchange different maps and see the areas others have explored?
The server has been updated to version 1.0.1. This is a server only upgrade which was released to fix the "invalid serial key" error so many of us have been experiencing. You do not need to update your client. Please let me know if anyone continues to experience that error from here on out.
Try Minecraft Classic. It's free, and you'll get a gist of what the game is about.
BTW, I had an incident with a creeper last night next to the glass spawning building near the noob hotel. I tried to repair it but for some reason I cannot fathom the area near about is all un-buildable-mineable.

I added another layer of pistons in my sugarcane farm and was having a lot of trouble getting them to all activate together. I finally got it to work though just have to finish the wiring. It was just a huge pain to figure out.
Okay, this is driving me nuts. I've read every review, every thread, every post, and I still don't think I understand Minecraft. Is it just crafting gone mad, or is it an RPG? What the duece!? Hell, the player-run servers remind me of Neverwinter Nights.. had some fun times with those PWs.
If you guys had to break Minecraft down into a couple paragraphs, what would you say? Why is this so good? The level of popularity this game has been experiencing is more than enough to make me want to play it, but I want to make sure I'm not just jumping on a bandwagon here.
Minecraft is... unique, which makes it a bit difficult to describe as it doesn't really fit into of the normal gaming genres. I think the best thing to compare it to is actually Legos (the plastic blocks, not the Lego movie video games), but in first (or third) person mode and where you have to 'earn' every single piece you place and you can die. These 'blocks' you have to 'earn' include things which can help you survive, such as food, weapons, armor, potions, etc. The world is composed of basic natural resources, such as dirt, stone, trees, water, animals, etc. You dig, mine, chop down, kill, etc. these basic resources and can then combine them in certain manners to create other things. For example, the most basic starting system goes like this:
1) Spawn into a new world.
2) Punch a tree to get tree blocks.
3) Turn tree blocks into wood blocks.
4) Turn wood blocks into a crafting table.
5) Turn more wood blocks into sticks.
6) Turn a combination of wood blocks and sticks into a wooden pickaxe.
7) Use pickaxe to mine stone, producing cobblestone.
8) Use sticks and cobblestone to make a stone pickaxe (better than a wood one).
9) Mine coal.
10) Combine sticks and coal to produce torches, which provide light at night and in dark areas.
All of that can be done in about 3-5 minutes, faster if you can find coal quickly. There are an exceptionally large number of basic resources to mine/harvest/gather, and an even greater number of things to craft out of those resources, from doors to magic enchanting tables to jukeboxes to railroads to portals to other dimensions (there are 3 total 'dimensions'). There's even an extensive 'electricity' system (redstone) which allows you to make all kinds of automated mechanical devices. There are enemies to fight and an unbelievably large world (randomly generated) to explore, but there isn't any actual goal to the game. The point is basically to exist in a world where you can build anything that you can imagine, which is why I compare to Legos.
I agree with rajpoot, try the free version. It's an older version without as much stuff and you can't use multiplayer (which, IMHO, is a LOT more fun than SP), but it will get you used to the basic gameplay concepts. Be aware that there is no official manual, tutorial, or documentation of any kind. If you want to know how to do something, you should read the Minecraft Wiki (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/), which is essentially the manual (or ask in here).
BTW, I had an incident with a creeper last night next to the glass spawning building near the noob hotel. I tried to repair it but for some reason I cannot fathom the area near about is all un-buildable-mineable.
Eh, don't worry about it. You can't fix it because only people with Ops can alter terrain within a certain radius of the server spawn point (30 squares, I think). I've been meaning to revamp that area anyway. Due to the whitelist we don't have random players logging on anymore, so it's far less important to have a whole lot of rule text there to greet them. The main thing is just making sure people spawn in safety.
I added another layer of pistons in my sugarcane farm and was having a lot of trouble getting them to all activate together. I finally got it to work though just have to finish the wiring. It was just a huge pain to figure out.
I think the biggest hurdle to overcome is understanding how the various switches, redstone dust, and redstone torches 'power' the blocks around them, depending on precisely which ones you use and how you position them. Once that starts to click into place, it gets easier.

Yeah it took me a really long time to figure out how the torches could work with redstone. I did not learn how to use them properly until after I had joined the server. For some reason the way I had the wiring for the pistons set up should have worked from what I understand about redstone, but it wouldn't. For the most part it did, except for the middle piston which would not activate. I still don't understand why it did not work, when it should have. I've changed the wiring dramatically from what it was originally and it should work now.
If you want to recreate the original setup, I'd be happy to take a look at it and see if I can spot the error.
The right side of my sugar cane farm is still how I had first wired it if you want to go take a look at it when you get on. I don't think I messed with that side.
Now that I think about it I think I might know why it didn't work. If redstone dust goes up a block does the block before the step-up get powered? If it does not then that would be the problem.

Ah, wunderbar!
Tell me, is there a Deadmau5 head yet?
Found an NPC town. Better than the church and random tower we found, TinCow.

I found what is probably the fabled snow biome. It's at -970,65,1234.
Edit:
Also if someone has two diamonds to spare please put them at the noob hotel. I want to try and create an enchanting table once I get back.
And there's also a nice little marsh biome a little way off from the new NPC village.
fluffy, were you having difficulty connecting yesterday? On the console I saw what looked like two successful connections with your name followed by a lot of failed ones later from the same IP.

You can take two diamonds from me, I owe you for those slimeballs. However, I can't dump them at the noob hotel until this evening. If you're on before then, you're welcome to take them from my house. However, they are stored in my secret lab, not my workrooom, and my lab is (by design) a bit hard to locate. As a hint, access is through the library.
Has anyone found a mushroom biome yet?

Thank you. There is no hurry though...I won't be logging in again before tomorrow, so whenever you have a moment drop them in the chest at the hotel. I added a brewing stand there today. An enchanting table should complete the roster nicely.

Thank you
So I just built a snowman turret near the noob hotel. Since it was a first attempt I put in too many blocks and it's not much to look at, but the snowman is there, and he can't get out so I it's OK.
Regrettably, I didn't get to see any action despite hanging around on the hotel's roof an entire night, because it would appear monsters don't detect the snowman from 16 blocks away like they can detect the player. Spiders, Skeletons, Zombies, Creepers and even Endermen kept spawning a little way off in the darkness but didn't come any closer, so the snowman just stood there looking puzzled.
Anyway wiki says that 5 spiders are capable of killing 500 snowmen. So if anyone goes off to the tundra biome to collect some snow for their base please pick some up for me too and dump it in the noob hotel when you get a chance.
Edit:
So the snow golem is a dud...I was pushed into lava by a skeleton a few blocks away and all it did was stand there, looking puzzled.
I have created a complete map of the server which works with the usual Google Maps interface. You can find a link to it here (https://forums.totalwar.org/minecraft/map/map.html), and I've added another link in the OP. The map displays a surface view of the entire explored world, so it shouldn't be so hard to track down those snow biomes now. I will try and update the map every week or two.

Was this before or after I decided to take a long stroll today? I forget what you said....
Edit:
Never mind, I will never forget those deserts....
I went the exact opposite way to explore an ocean biome.....
Sigh...
EDIT!
Unless that part was already explored.
I don't see anything else that I saw while traveling,
unless its that long stretch of marsh to the left.
That map's great! I can almost trace the route I took back to hotel from the NPC village.
And it would seem that the Tundra biome I stumbled upon was a Southern extension of the one Tincow had found.
I don't even know half the people shown on the map....where'd they come from....:dizzy2:
Tincow something seems to be wrong with the door to your secret lab. When I joined the server earlier tonight I was inside of it and the lever did not open the door. I had to get out by breaking some stone by the window(I replaced it). I tried to go in from the front but that failed to work as well.

That map does include everything everyone did yesterday. I know I said it wouldn't yesterday, but that was before I realized I had made an error on the map rendering. The reason it the file size was so gigantic was that I had it render as pngs. I re-ran the renderer late last night and changed it over to jpgs with some compression, which dropped the total size down to 4gb (from 14gb). It's still large, but far easier to manage.

Hehe, no wonder my browser crashes when I zoom in and out too much....
LOL, no, you're not download 4gb when you zoom out. It runs on the google maps system, so every layer is a completely new set of pictures, and your browser only loads what it needs to fit the current layer on the screen. Zoomed completely out, the entire map only takes up 80k. Zoomed all the way in, it takes up 2.36gb, but you're never viewing more than a tiny spec of that area at any one moment.
The server map (link in OP) has been updated.
Hahaha... I got lost the otherday showing Secura around, and was saying Hello to Therother. All I saw was this big forest and only thing I had on me was an ignitor.. you can see a big patch on the map where I have been.
Edit: Wow, the Waterworld Base is even on that map!
I see what has happened, it generators the entire explored world. Very interesting. You get to see how far I went on my ever long journey. What is surprising is where the Snow biome infact quite close and no where near where TinCow told me that time.
The Ender portal is up! Why did no one say?
For all ye would be dragon slayers. (http://www.gamefront.com/minecraft-killing-the-enderdragon/)

Yeah, it displays the entire generated world, but the world is only generated as people explore, so there are many gaps. To give you a sense of scale, the snow biome is at around 1,500 to 2,000 'meters' from the spawn point, with 'meters' being the unit of measurement listed in the X, Y, and Z coordinates. The world itself extends out to 30,000,000 meters in all directions from the spawn point. So, we've only actually explored about 1/10,000 of one percent of the total world. It's a big game.
Sorry Tiaexz, I meant to post that the end gate was completed, but I completely forgot about it. I went in it and played around a bit with the dragon :2thumbsup: I destroyed one of the towers in there, but died in the process, because I did not know they exploded.
I went out past where the end fortress across a massive ocean and found a swamp biome and a few small islands.

Massive Deadmau5 head?
or maybe a sphinx?
Or some other iconic figure on a massive scale.....
There was some kind of explosion in my nether outpost. I have no idea how it happened, but a significant portion of the building was destroyed and many of the supplies inside. I salvaged what I could and rebuild the storage chest, but as far as I can tell Pest's chest was completely vaporized. Apologies if there was something important in there, but I have no idea what happened.
I think Pest simply had a bunch of random stuff in there.
I put in some time today and finally managed to finish my castle. It's still bare-bones though...needs doors and all that stuff.
Also the experimental pumpkin farm is going exceedingly well so if someone needs pumpkins to start their own plantation they're welcome to take some from my chests.

I'm all for a group project. My side project is nearing completion and it's looking pretty good.
Are we thinking about a specific building or something bigger like a walled village with exotic materials and circuitry?

Personally I'm for a specific building/monument. Something like a huge townhall (based on the shape of some real world building...like the Pentagon for instance) in the center of the settled area.
An extoic village also has it's appeal but I fear that trying to do something too 'fancy' will mean more mining for exotic materials and less building....
Edit:
They might be tough, but big domes and spheres look very cool. I once made a hemisphere in SP with help of Minecraft Structure planner (http://minecraftstructureplanner.com/) and it turned out very well.
I'm also more inclined towards a really large building. A coliseum/arena or giant temple or something.
My next project was going to be the "Org Tavern", but that would probably be smaller than TinCow's Batcave.
I think the monument should go inbetween the Pyramid, Csargo's Area and n00b hotel. Something big and grand... and we use that structure planner to create it, then anyone knows what needs doing and in their free time work upon it.

Big Ben, with Parliament included?
Or the White House?
Taj Mahal?
Pantheon, with notch and the makers of minecraft instead of the greek deities?
I still like my idea of a massive mau5 head.
Or we can go fictional!
Helms Deep?
Minas Tirith?
Minas Morgul?
Isengard?
Barad-dur (eye included)?
I can keep going if you like.
Oh, how about the mines of moria?
We mine, and build at the same time!
Win-win!

We might want to stay away from domed structures as they may look a little weird if they're not big enough.
Maybe something simple that we can build from strip mining and wood?
As far as exotic materials go: Glowstone lights would be good but things like wool may be difficult. I don't know how developed everyone's pastures are.
As far as exotic materials go: Glowstone lights would be good but things like wool may be difficult. I don't know how developed everyone's pastures are.
Wool can also be made from string, which can be harvested from spider webs. A thorough cleaning of a few abandoned mines would yield many stacks.
Perfect. Then all we need is an impressive yet nor overly complex structure.
My suggestion is something along the lines of a cylindrical building with pillars instead of walls covered by a hemispheric dome.
Another walled cylinder of equal height inside it.
Something like this with a dome on top.
3297
Or we can have something like this -
3298
Simpler shape, and we can use different materials like Vladimir said, instead of just stone.
For the record, I've built a road to a second nether fortress. If we wanted to use Nether Brick, we could mine that one completely down. It's very large and would produce a ton of brick.
What about building Winterfell in the Snow Biome?
Is the server off line right now?
Looks like it needs restarting.

Retry using the IP in the first post, you might have had the old one and never corrected to the new one. Silly Chuchip.

As Tiaexz said, try using the IP in the OP (74.96.163.86). I had network issues several weeks ago which required a hard router reset, and that made my IP change.
I am going to have to find some where to build the Org Tavern.... might build it near the spawn point or build it near the Stronghold and turn it into my private island..
The other is a big fortress city in the Snow Biome.... so many areas and ideas!

Sorry I forgot about that post. I tried the new IP and it worked, thanks. Looks like someone harvested all my wheat, let all my animals loose, broke the window on top of my room, and stole my iron and gold. I'm guessing it was one of the people that was stealing other people's stuff before you closed the server to the public. For the broken window, that may have been me. I got nuked by a creeper while walking next to your house a really long time ago and a good chunk of wall was destroyed. I fixed what I could at the time and I think Csargo fixed some as well, but we might have missed the window. The animals probably escaped on their own. My animals constantly get out of their pens even though they are completely fenced in. Since you haven't logged in for so long, I'm not surprised there are none left. I have no idea about the wheat, iron, or gold, but you are welcome to take whatever resources you need to rebuild from my house.

About Redstone: Do we want to build a telegraph system to let others know we're working at the site? I take it everyone has a ton of it. We can wire it so that if someone is at the site they can flip a switch to activate a torch.
Or whatever. I'm really interested in infrastructure and the rail system is already well developed. I would love to get experience with redstone.

Hmmm... you just gave me an idea. The idea of building an arena/coliseum has been mentioned several times (Tiaexz pointed out that this thread is itself posted in the Arena, thus making the construction of an arena rather meta). Since we're on a survival server, we could make it an actual combat arena. We could have multiple rooms leading to the arena floor. The rooms could be completely dark, so that mobs spawn inside. If we did some good redstone wiring, we could have multiple doors controlled by a central switching station, so that once a person was on the arena floor we could open the doors and release the monsters to fight. We could even install water systems in each one so that we could 'push' the mobs out into the central area for combat. We could line the entire combat floor and walls with obsidian to prevent destruction via creepers.
Thoughts?
Vladimir

That's an excellent idea. The only problem is in controlling the monster spawning. Can a pickaxe with silk touch safely transport spawners? If not, we could try to lure monsters into pens.
I imagine we could also develop a lighting system with pistons and glowstone, torches, or lava. Flip a switch and out pops a light source. The scale of this project should preclude the need for a microblocks mod.

As I understand it, you can transport a mob spawner with silk touch, but after you replace it it will only spawn pigs. However, we don't need to worry about that because mobs will spawn in total darkness. All we need to do is create a large enough room in total darkness, and have the room be sufficiently isolated from the viewing area (24 squares I think) for mobs to spawn there. If the rooms are large enough and we have enough of them (I'm thinking 3+), they should generate enough mob spawns for some decent fighting. We can add switch-controlled lighting inside the spawn rooms for maintenance purposes, and perhaps some kind of switch-controlled lava trap or something to purge the rooms prior to entering.
The area would need to be roofed over, though, or the zombies and skeletons would burn up during daylight fights.
The location seems ideal. I scouted around just now and it can be the perfect place to build with just a little landscaping. I did run into some small caverns below the surface though, so we can't dig too much there, or we'll be filling holes for a lot of time.
Also can the area near the spawn point be made...'un-restricited' now? I struck some diamond veins deep underground but it appears they are below the spawn point and so I can't mine them....
Edit:
The Arena idea sounds nice. How do you plan to stop creepers from spawning though?
Alternatively you can just place mob spawners there. I'm sure they can be placed as a block using server commands......since this is a special case (as monster spawning can't really be controlled through any in game mechanism) I don't see this as cheating....

I'll see if there's a way to do that, as the spawn area protection does seem a bit unnecessary with the whitelist.

I didn't. The plan was to coat the combat area with obsidian, which they can't destroy.

I suppose that is a possibility, though I would want there to be unanimous consent to doing that, as creating blocks is otherwise prohibited on the server.

Spawners themselves are gamey goodness covered in cheese. I think we can allow them. All hail the server god!
BTW, I think I know what happened to Pest's chest in the nether outpost. I recall placing a bed in there when I constructed it, though I never used it. Apparently that's a bad thing, as beds explode when slept in in the Nether. The hole was certainly centered around where the bed used to be, so I guess some unlucky person got nuked by it and took out the rest of the stuff as well.
Ok, here's a very rough sketch of my thoughts on the operative level of the arena. This image is a cross section of the bottom level of the arena, with all roofing and seating and such removed.
The black lines are walls.
The gray area is the combat floor.
The light orange areas are the mob spawning rooms. Each room would be slanted, higher at the back and lower at the front. There would be water sources at the back that would move all spawned mobs towards the doors, which are the red dots.
The blue ring behind the mob spawning rooms is an access corridor for maintenance, and the green dots are manually controlled access doors to each mob room. Switches would be placed by each green dot door to control interior lighting and maybe some kind of lava or cactus system to purge any monsters already inside.
The light blue square at the bottom is where I imagine the control room and access area to be, likely two levels. At the bottom level would be a large corridor for the 'gladiators' to enter. Above it, probably on the seating level where the arena floor is visible, would be the control room. The red dot doors would all be individually controllable from this room, so that one person can control the release of the monsters. Perhaps some door control here as well to lock in the 'gladiators' and prevent them from leaving once they enter.
On top of all of this would be stadium-style seating going all the way around, and the whole thing would be covered by a roof, probably in a very basic dome style, or maybe just flat depending on how high the seating goes.

If we want to get more elaborate, we could also add a 'loot' box that was suspended over the very middle of the combat floor (like a scoreboard), with a maintenance access route to the control room. This loot box would contain multiple dispensers, and each dispenser would contain a certain kind of item, like swords, arrows, food, potions, armor, etc. The dispensers themselves would also be controlled from the control room, so that one person could selectively drop various 'rewards' to the 'gladiators' in between rounds of fighting.
So I guess a gigantic cobblestone building is out then.... :moustache:
