Greetings
After I have been visiting this forum for years and learning a lot of useful stuff (and some not so useful) I decided to join.
I my case it was the EB mod that has been the decisive factor in joining - since it is a really impressive mod and I want to annoy the members of EB with my opinions on how to further improve the game.

Welcome to the Org, Heimdall. This is not the right thread to ask such a question, but if you repost it in the Entrance Hall one of the moderators can move it to the appropriate forum. What do you specifically want to do? I am not a modder, but I recall that BKB added Jewish Master Merchants to his mod, so it should be possible.

Thanks, Ludens! I probably should have thought about posting that question in the appropriate forum. I want to create a Viking (or Pagan, if you will) Runemaster unit to counteract the Catholic surge in my provinces. I'll look around and see what info I can find. Here is the long version of the story...

In 1087 conflict was growing through the known western world. The great Turkish sultan sensed an opportunity and decided to claim ownership of Armenia to consolidate his lands to prepare for the forthcoming wars. Didn't he know that the two other eastern superpowers Byzantine and Egypt had other plans. The cowards Byzantines and Egyptians attacked while the sultan was busy sieging the Armenian castle. The Turkish warriors protected their homelands with much bravery but with significant losses fighting a two front war.
The great sultan then made a fatal strategic mistake. He assigned a general with royal connection but with limited battle experience (zero command star) to besiege the Syrian castle. The Egyptian sultan sensed weakness and sent his battle hardened 750 strong army commanded by a 4-star general to lift the siege. The foolish Turkish general with his 600 men consisting of two units of spears, two militias, and five desert archers decided to engage the enemy. He intended to have his archers pellet the enemy from a hill. He was much surprised when the scouts returned claming that there are only dunes in the desert. The much disappointed general decided to deploy his two units of spears in the front and his two militias on the flanks on the top of a dune. Two units of archers were then deployed in front of the spears, which will eventually join the 3 units of archers in the rear. The Egyptian general then sent one unit of camel to attack each flank. The impatient Egyptian general in his camel made a frontal assault with the rest of the army. The Turkish general sensed panic among his army and ordered the archers to concentrate the arrows on the flanks and the enemy general. But the battle was already lost; the militias couldn't hold the camel charge and started fleeing toward the Turkish frontline. This caused a complete disarray of the Turkish army and the fleeing soldiers were cut down one by one.... The great sultan learned his lesson. He never underestimated again those funny looking camels and used them brilliantly a few years later against the Almohads.

Welcome fallon. I've downloaded one patch, v1.3, just to change a few things and not the whole game, but I believe there's a v1.5 for rtw and 1.6 for bi and a lot of people seem to enjoy rtr so you might wanna give that a try to.

Welcome to the Org, fallon 144. Since the Gold edition comes with Barbarian Invasion, you will need the latest BI patch: BI 1.6. You can find it on this site (http://www.totalwar.com/community/download.htm). Also download the little campaign fix found on this page. It corrects a minor mistake in the building files.

There are two other downloads I recommend: Bug-Fixer (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=55464) and Darth Formations (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=62552). Bug-Fixer is an unofficial patch made by Player1 that corrects many of the small bugs and mistakes left in the accessible game files. Darth Formations is a small modification made by Darth Vader. It makes the A.I. more clever by changing its battlefield formations. This is something more experienced players certainly appreciate, as the A.I. of R:TW is not too bright.

Unlike Telys The Conqueror I don't recommend Rome: Total Realism (or R:TR). Firstly, the current version of R:TR, R:TR Gold, is made for R:TW 1.2 (without BI) so it won't run on R:TW Gold. Also, I would not play a major modification (like R:TR) until I have got to know the original game. If you are interested despite this, you can find the official R:TR site here (http://www.rometotalrealism.org/). R:TR is a modification that makes the game more challenging and realistic, but it does change a lot of the original game.

Well, my browser is saying to introduce myself, so here goes. My name says it all if you are in the know, an Asatruar, follower of the Gods of the pre-Christian northern europeaners, i.e. the northmen and vikings...

I started playing MTW a while back, and had a few probs with it's design so I decided to change that myself and found myself here to learn how to mod the game.

BTW, anyone know a mod to string all three periods together, combine units (imagine a combination unit of pikemen and arquebusier) and modifying units?

I chain smoke, drink mead, beer and vodka like it is water, curse, play a mean guitar and score at the bar...

Hello, I am Jakenason Lionheart Rhovanian. (Long name, I know) I just figured that to become a full member I needed to introduce myself and get into the site. So, here I am! I play Rome: Total War every weekend when school isn't such a hassle. I take a Tae Kwon Do martial arts class (where I am now a 2nd degree black belt), I am a straight A student from a Nebraska high school. I also play Football and Basketball. I think my greatest quality would have to be my incredible way of making everyone around me feel good about themselves (My father was that way as well, must be some kind of genetic thing).

I love sports, but mostly I love to kick butt on R:TW!!!

I love you all!!!! (Any girls on this site?)

Hmmm, not sure I should ask the question here, but here it goes. One of the thing that aggrevates me is the relatively short campaign time for the periods. Well, I heard that you can extend this time by hacking the code. Can you do it to the Early Period, extending it to the end time for Late Period and get the scientific advances (compass, gunpowder, etc) that you get in Late Period?

Are you plaing MTW? All periods end at 1453. If you want to extend the end date, modify the "SetGameEndDate" in files in the "startpos" folder. Check the Modification forums for more details.

Yes, the game ends at 1453 irregardless of the period you start. This coincides with the fall of Constantinople and the end of the medieval period.

Spoiler alert...
.
.
.
Gunpowder is invented in 1260
Compass is invented sometime before the High Period, but I don't recall exactly when...

Actually I have a question, but idk if this is the right thread. Aah, o well, here it goes anyway.

I have been making a mod for MTW, and it basically just has a new faction (the Mikese; I know, I even almost stun myself with my own creativity, but I am so creative I can foresee it happening and thus avoid being stunned) and some new units for said faction. I'm not too artistic, so I just used the unit graphics for other units (Ex. I used the Swiss Armoured Pikemen artwork for my pikemen unit, and the Lancers artwork for my bodyguard unit) and renamed them and fooled with the stats a little bit. The thing is, I gave them all pavises to use as shields, but since I just copied everything for the artwork, most of the units don't have the pavises on the battle map.
:help:
I was wondering, could explain to me how I could get my units to carry around a pavise on the battle map (I don't care too much about having it in the other places, like the strategy map unit descriptions or uniticon panel)? Along the same lines, I gave all my cavalry swords instead of the lances they would usually have, so could I get the lances to go away and have them fight with swords instead? Lastly, I took the javelins away from the Spanish Jinetes and gave them bows instead (this one is really funny; they pick up a javelin, make a throwing motion with it, and an arrow flies out of the middle of the spear:laugh4: ); can I make the bows show up too?

Welcome bowrestt and everyone else. Sorry, I don't have Shogun so I can't really help you out, but I'm sure someone will be along soon that can give you a hand.

Another question I came up with: How do I get an Avatar that isn't one of the default choices? I have this one that I use in the Civfanatics forums and AIM and I'd like to use that here too, but I didn't see a place for custom Avatars. Can I use an Avatar that isn't one of the default ones?

A Moderator shall be along presently, A bit like a traffic cop. They will help you post in the appropriate forum.

Hmm...It seems like traffic cops only come around when I Don't want them too, but I guess I'll wait and see.

I tried posting in the MTW modding forums, there was even a thread for "New Patrons: Ask your questions here" but I couldn't post there either~:( .

EDIT: your MOD sounds cool btw.

Thanks. There were a few things I wanted to change (like the stupid thing where you can have the right building to build crossbows but can't actually train them until 1205), and I figured while I was at it I should make a couple more things different, mostly so the game fit my play style better.

Gah!! What do you mean I can't edit my posts?!!?:furious3:

Fine, guess it's a new post then...

Another mod related question, just in case someone comes around who can help me with this (and so I don't forget what it was I wanted to ask again :dizzy2:). Is there any way I can get my generals to stop dying of old age? I still want my king to do so, because that has an impact on the actual game play. All that happens when a regular old general or an heir that no longer has claim to the throne dies is the unit gets renamed and there is a new picture when you click on the army. The vnv doesn't change any, and the unit count doesn't go down any, so I don't really see a reason for generals to die of old age (other than for more realism I guess, but then again the player is some omnipresent being that is aware instantly of everything going on in his realm, and can force the group of 25 peasants to charge uphill at the formation of knights, and I don't see that as being too realistic, its even a little bit of why I like the game). This isn't something I would usually rant about, but I hate it when I finally start realizing what all my generals are good for, then they die of old age and I have to learn all the new names. Plus, I think a 400 year old El Cid would be pretty cool. :dizzy2: :laugh4:

Hi fellow TW fans. I'm actually a long time reader of this forum and I may have registered at one point years ago but can't remember.

I've played TW since 2000 and still play all three games (inc expansions) regularly. I tend to play vh/vh full campaigns and I think I've played all factions. I'm really looking forward to MTW2.

I enjoyed M:TW, but wasn't impressed by R:TW. So I'm hoping that EB will be a pretty decent mod (if I can ever get it to work:embarassed: ).

About me: I live in Blantyre in Scotland and I love Military History, wargames (miniatures & computer) and Stoner Rock music.

Greetings of the Battle Day

Let me begin by stating that it feels a great honour for me to join your ranks, at last, as a newbie. I've been playing MTW since its inception and will start on RTW as soon as I've completed played all MTW factions on Expert. I find Medieval to be the single most satisfying game I've ever played. Its subtlety and sophistication bear little relation to any other game, ever. I missed out on Shogun, which seems a terrible shame though I'm sure I'll get around to fully appreciating it in the near future.

I'd like to thank all the contributors to the Org for the vast improvement to my game that studying here has enabled. Special thanks go to Frogbeastegg, Ludens, Cheetah, Doug-Thompson and Katank, in no special order [deep bows], although all of you who have, through careful observation, produced useful insight into the world of Total War, are worthy of long and eloquent praise [full bow, eyes unaverted].

Favourite campaign so far: Russia, High/Hard. It's simply amazing what 2-3 units of halbs, 2 arbs, 2 druz and 1-2 boyars can acheive, (with the right morale bonuses for the infantry, of course) against practically any odds!
Favourite unit: Horse Archers, all varieties, Boyars especially.
Favourite personal innovation: Introducing Nietzchean civil service exams into my faction, whereby spammed assassins are then set upon my own other agents, thereby soon producing many high valour agents and assassins without upsetting the other factions diplomatically. Never have a priest or emmissary assassinated or a spy discovered by another faction again!

I look forward to the day we can multiplay the whole total war game and not merely the tactical aspect, satisfying though that is.

I'm would also like to make the singleplayer MTW game more complex and difficult for myself: which mod(s) would you recommend and why? (Don't use any at present)

I have much to learn from you,
thus respectfully yours,
gNostic Heretic :book:

Welcome, gNostic Heretic and others.

Very nice entry Heretic :2thumbsup:. I find that I must echo your statements about how helpful many of the veterns here are, as I probably wouldn't have thought to say those things myself.

To address the questions at the bottom of your post: From what I've read, what mods you would find best probably depend on what time period you are looking for. There are some good pre-MTW mods, and there are some good post- mods as well (Napoleanic comes to mind; such a masterpiece. I tred it a bit, and it was like a completely different game compared to Medieval; tactics, strategy, and just about everything else is different. This may be one for you to look into, as I found it both more complicated and harder), then there are some totally different ones (there is a Middle Earth mod based on Tolkein's Lord of the Rings, and a MTW redue of Shogun Total War). There are also many that just add more options to the standard MTW, like more units, factions, artwork, etc. My internet is pretty slow, and my computer is stupid, so download and play these mods I have not, but reading some of the threads for them make them seem promising enough. My best advise: explore the Engineers Guild. https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=40.

What I have done is created my own mod. I think it might be good for you to try, especially since most mods aim at keeping the game balanced, so it is neither harder nor easier for the player. It also gave me a much better understanding of the game (and even more appreciation for the people who made the game and those you mentioned who wrote guides and FAQs). What I did was made a new faction with new units, making the game easier for me. I then played it on Expert difficulty level (I had been playing on Normal). I found this made the kind of balance I was looking for, as well as allowed me to change some of the more annoying parts of Medieval I didn't like (projectilestats, I'm looking at you :glares:). There are tons of great tools and modding guides in the Alchemist Lab and Repository, so I would suggest you consider that too. https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=69

Well, I hope I was able to help you some, and again, welcome to the Org!

Hello Guild members! Just another newbie to the community. I purchased a Gold Edition copy of Roman Total War/Barbarian Invasion last week, and I have to say, as I start my first campaign game (long, and in easy mode, just for grins), I have to say this is the most engaging game I've ever played. I love watching the psychological development of my faction family members, the combat level aspect of the game (which I'm still breaking myself in on slowly), and the building of armies, viable cities, and the diplomatic and political relationship features of the game. To the veterans, I'm sure this sounds old hat to you. I don't think of myself as the typical gamer, being a middle aged guy with a book collecting hobby. :book: I was a history major in college and have read a great deal of ancient history. So the game touches my historical interests as well. As some newbies have already said before, I am deeply indebted to several veterans of this site - frogbeastegg, Aescuplius amd Quietus in particular, for their advice posts. They have provided some excellent counsel on the game that the manual doesn't give, and have saved me a lot of trouble and time in trial and error. :ballchain:

I don't know how often I'll post myself, but I do love reading the comments of those on this site. Some of the adventures are fascinating. My current game is with the cash poor Julii and I have just a few provinces subdued. So it's early. Thank you for letting me be a part of your community!

It really depends on what you are looking for. If you just want to beef up M:TW without changing overmuch, there are small modifications like Zarax's mod of WesW's MedMod v2. If it is challenge you are looking for, but still want to stay the Medieval theme, I recommend the later versions (v3 or v4 beta) of WesW's MedMod. All versions of the MedMod improve the A.I.'s decision-making resulting in a far harder game, but v3 and v4 add other changes that make it more difficult to expand. v4 is still in the testing phase, though. Other popular medieval mods are Medieval XL by VikingHorde and Blind King of Bohemia's Supermedieval. If it is non-medieval scenario's you are interested in; the big names are Napoleonic TW, Hellenic TW and Samurai Wars (a remake of Shogun on the M:TW engine). There was also a Fall of Rome mod, but I guess this one is less interesting after R:TW and its assorted mods.

Welcome to the Org, and thanks for the compliment, ~ .

You can access the Mead Hall, and most of the other forums, once you have been promoted to full member. In the mean time if you want to add your story to the Mead Hall, you can post it in the Entrance Hall with a request to move it and one of the moderators will do so.

I'll have some free time over the summer to check out this mod, and I thought I'd join the forum in case I have any questions. In fact, I do have one question already. Is it possible to download the EB mod while still having Rome: Total Realism on my system, or do I have do delete RTR before I can download and use EB? If anybody in this forum can answer my question I'd be most grateful. Thanks!

It's possible to have both: you can uninstall RTR first, and then copy the whole folder and paste it. Then, reinstall RTR into one of them and install EB onto the other. It wastes quite a lot of space though.

My name is Graham Sumner. I am a freelance illustrator and author. Perhaps some of you have seen my work for Osprey books. And yes I play RTW as well!

Welcome Graham, Subedei, and Scab!!

Graham, you should check out the MEAD HALL, there are a lot of good stories and writers in there.

So hi to all & I am very glad about finding a couple of freaks being into history & gaming, like me....:2thumbsup: :shame: :laugh4:

I think you found more than a couple. How many members are there to this site? I think "lots" is a fair estimate.:laugh4:

Hi Graham,

I just came over the "Kalka River" issue of the Osprey collection. How do you guys come up with special things like painting Jebe and Subedei? Imagination, research, both? Anyways it's an interesting book. I hope you'll write a bit about ur work(s)....:book:

New members can only post in the Entrance Hall and a few other forums (mainly technical and mod-related ones). To get access to the rest of the forum, they need to get promoted first. This system is a bit restrictive, but it helps keep the Org free of spammers, trolls and other internet-pests. All that is required for promotion is a bit of patience, and that post regularly in a friendly and helpfull manner. More information can be found in the Guild FAQ (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=45416).

In the mean time, if you want to add something to a discussion in a non-accessible forum you can post it in the Entrance hall with a link to thread and than the moderators or a helpfull member will move it.

I have no issue with a member called God there is more then one definition of God and I won't limit myself to thinking in the Christian definition of one.

I do find it funny that soon after God makes an appearance SeekingAnswers turns up.

Welcome everyone! As long as you play by the rules (no racist remarks etc) you will soon have access as a member.

I mean change everything around so as to fit with my vision. Hopefully there is a guide and tools available for d/l so I can start working on this. thanks. Lox

Osiyo. I joined because I bought Medieval: total War, and couldn't get it to work. I think it doesn't like my mighty 64mb integrated shared memory video card on this computer. :P It crashes whenever I try to go and start a campaign or the campaign tutorials. Battle tutorials work fine.

It kinda aggravates me here too, since there's a thread devoted just to that problem, yet I can't post there. :P

Have you tried to contact KukriKhan? He may be able to help you get your account back. If not, you could ask frogbeastegg to confirm that you are indeed Lady Ann of clan Freedom Fighters.

Hello, everyone. New man here, an immigrant from the .com forums. I'm Norwegian, and have played TW for some time; vanilla MTW for a little over two years, just got VI in the mail this week, and RTW since shortly after its release.

Looking forward to exchanging information in these informative forums (recieving more than giving, I'm sure).

Hey all, i am new here. I found your site from a google search actually. I have been playing the total war games for a few years now. I started when a friend introduced me to Medieval Total War. I loved it and have now got Rome Total War. I love the game. I see you have a cool site here. I see discussions about the game and even some about modding, im not much of a modder, but i do a few things such as editing units and such. I also you got a history forum and even an arcade. This looks like a good site and i hope to visit it often.

Hi guys-
I'm new here - I suppose I should have posted here first, instead of putting 3 massive posts on the Carthage guide, but I couldn't help myself.

Can anybody give me their opinion on a good laptop on which to play RTW?/ M2TW? I'm going to college next year, and I'm einkaufen for a good laptop.
