Hello everyone. I've been playing TW since MTW was introduced. Now I'm hooked on BI. After reading "most" of the posts on tactics I've able to greatly enhance my game. How do the mods work? Do you still have the ability to play the original or is the mod a final "fix"?

Welcome aboard Romulas.
If you copy the original RTW(MTW for that sake)folder, rename it and install the mod in that folder. Now you will still be able to play vanilla from the original folder.
Hope that helped.

Hello everybody, I'm Nikpalj. I've wanted to play STW for a long time, since I've seen it's review in a local comp game magazine in, what was it - '99? But the big problem was that I have been a proud owner of an P - 133Mhz (!) for a looong time... I've finally bought myself a new computer (and a copy of STW with it) and then... I found out just HOW smart a CPU can be, playing against a human. And so... here I am.

Hello.
I'm new to the Guild, as well as being new to MTW. Actually, I have had the game for quite some time now, but didn't sit down and start playing an actual campaign until just a few weeks ago. I'm playing my first campaign as Byzantium in Early on Normal setting. It's 1260 and I've just finished off the Golden Horde (quite an experience, really - didn't even know they were coming until 5,000 of them suddenly appeared in my province in Georgia, and another 10,000 or so in Khazar... great fun!!)

Just a quick question. Should I buy the Viking Invasion, or just patch up my regular MTW? I'm not really interested in the new campaign, so are the new things added to the VI similar to the ones I get by patching up the original game?
Also, has any one of you tried the Shogun mod MTW? How does it compare in terms of gameplay to the STW (I'm have limited disk space and want to play both of them, so why not just mod MTW, skip on STW)? Is it stable? Thanks and merry Christmas 2 u all!
Mouzafphaerre

.
The expansion adds a lot to the original game. I don't remember all of them and I'm afraid there is no handy reference that I'm aware of, but suffice to say all mods are for the VI'ed MTW and modding potential is increased by at least two times with the expansion. There are also plenty of gameplay and engine enhancements. I urge you to get VI and then patch up to 2.01.
Unlike the 1.3 and 1.5 patches for RTW, which enable the upgrades of BI and 1.6 for the original game, respectively, there is no VI equivalent patch for MTW. 1.1 is pretty outdated and 2.01 works only with VI.

Hello people! I'm ][Sith][Darth_x-dANGEr, co-founder of Sith clan, been playing this game since it's out. First time for me on here because I find this system a little complicated, and time-demanding to get a user going. But at last, I'm here :)
Hi Nikpalj,
In order to get a lot of the cool mods and stuff that people talk about, you need to get VI. A couple of years ago I bought only MTW, but now wish I would have bought the Battle Collection, which includes both MTW and VI (Battle Collection is now cheaper to purchase then the VI expansion, by the way).
As far as Shogun is concerned, I've never played it and don't really know that much about it. However, if I'm not mistaken, Shogun is a whole 'nother game and does not require that MTW to be installed (but I will defer that to the Showgun experts here on the Guild).

Shogun is the first, original and archaic TotalWar. AFAIK Medieval is made using Shogun's engine but aside from that they are totally different.

Indeed. Medieval is Shogun+, with more features and more diversity, but sadly less atmosphere and somewhat less balance. Shogun itself is an independent game, but there is also a Shogun mod for M:TW VI called Samurai Wars. Some people claim it is better than the original. You can find the Samurai Wars forum here (link (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=105)). We also discussed the Mod in this thread (link (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=58127)).

Hi, Alameda. Welcome to the Org!
My lordy. . .
I finally realised i can only post in this particular forum after 3 or 4 agonising days of re-registering and head thumping (an auto Private Message explaining this fact upon registering wouldn't hurt ya know. . .) "All that said", I'm positively chuffed to finally be here!
I've played and loved all the Total War games except the Viking Invasion Expansion for Medieval (the pre patch instant death at 54 years thing totally turned me off and by the time i grew [a little] bored of vanilla Medieval; Rome Total War arrived).
I recently aquired Barbarian Invasion although i must admit, that although its features truly rock, i'm much more keen on the time period and factions in vanila Rome Total War. Still, more Total War is a godsend and i'll soon jump right into the expansion as soon as i utterly dominate the world with my glorious Scipii (for the third time).
Waaay back in the Shogun days i registered with the much hated Gamespy Network (personal opinion, mind you) and enjoyed a few Online Multiplayer battles until i nearly collapsed into a deep psychosis over my dial up connection dramas. . .(i GIGLAN Rome all the time these days, however). My username back then was Seikou Senjutsu ('Unholy Ambition' is a poor translation).
Anyway, I'm Fr3Nzy these days and in many other games and forums (FPS'ers, 40k Online etc).
I'm truly pleased to be here!
Oh BTW, is there any rumours on the next Total War game for PC? I know there's a fairly hardcore historical bias in the series and think that's great but eventually they'll run out of periods (for Europe anyway, pre industrial, and Napoleonic and later eras don't really do it for me, personally). I'm not advocating fantasy, but mythological or romanticised Ancient Periods (like Sumeria, Egypt under the actual ancient Egyptians etc would be awesome.)
Asia would also be fantastic to revisit methinks. China this time tho, the '3 Kingdoms' period (at least i think that's what it's commonly known as) before unification.
Anyhow, Greetings to you all!
Game on!

Nice to meet you everybody. I just got MTW, and I think it's an awesome game. I've read all of the guides here, and I'm amazed at how deep and complex the game can be. I haven't tried MP yet. Can newbies have a good time there, or do we just pretty much get in the way?

I'm trying to log into MP for the first time, but I keep getting an "invalid CD key" message. I've tried the key several times with capital letters and without and with dashes and without. I bought my game at Wal-mart, so it's not a piracy issue.
If anyone has any ideas/advice I would appreciate it greatly.
BTW, MODS, I tried to post this in one of the Multiplayer threads. The bottom of the thread said You MAY post replies, but when I tried I got the access denied message several times. I couldn't think of another place to post besides here.

Depends which game. If it's RTW or MTW, go to their respective guide forums. If the tactics are faction-specific, just post it in the faction's thread.
The Guides can be found under New Members from the Guild Index.

Ya, like howdy, joined some time ago, haven't posted at all, suppose I should now. Looked up this forum for advice on RTW BI (loads and loads of advice) but, I still think this game sucks. Finally finished a successful campaign today (the first after about 10 tries) I have now such a sense of anticlimax, it's worse than sex. Anyways, I'm sick of these prompts to announce myself so, this is it. Thinking now I should have used 'Dr. Nick'.....................Anyways,

Hello.
As it may be amazingly obvious as to my screenname upon this particular webforum, I'll spare you the obvious 'Hello, I'm <insert random screenname here>!'
My interests include snakes, sarcasm, world domination (hence the Total War games), and women.
I've been lurking the RTW Guides forum for about a month now and only recently registered.
Anywho, have fun trying to discern whether or not I'm being sarcastic about various subjects, and feel free to ask as such: I don't mind answering. The last thing I want are any misunderstandings.

Greetings, all.
I've been lurking about the forum for a few months now, but the prospect of modding Rome:Total War has proven too much for me. I'm still very green when it comes to the actual modding, but I'm an artist by trade (doing my degree course in Computer Animation and Digital Art at Uni), and combined with my fascination with the ancient world it seemed obvious.
Bwian has very kindly taken me under his wing so I can learn more about modding, and I've always been quite interested in the historical discussions on the forum, particularly Ranikas.
Anyway, in short, I'm new here, please don't flank me or anything.:2thumbsup:

Hello and happy new year to all;
I came across this site just 2 days ago.Soon I gathered that I will like it here!
Basically I got bored by my RTWv1.5, and its been a week since I started my first attempts to modify little things in my game!
Knowing only how to turn on/shut down your pc and getting fascinated by the idea of moding your game is a deadly combo!Trust me!But it is so adventurous that I just cant stop it anymore!
Already I spend 2/3 of my RTW time in trying to alter values and commands (repeat, without having a single idea!) and 1/3 playing it!
Loading,kicked back.Reloading,Ctd.And again.And again!Untill it loads up :)Its a narcotic!
When a total amateur (like me) sees that some of his modifying (no matter how simple work it was, from just changing traits to creating a whole brand new unit) actually 'works' and the game 'accepts' it,then it makes me happy. And every time I go KBM or CTD it makes me more stubborn to make it happen !
So,having said all that above, -and sorry in advance for that- expect more questions than answers, from me!
Btw,I live in Greece. But I hate Greeks in the game :)

I've been a MMORPG player for the past several years but have gotten burnt out lately on the current offerings so I decided to try a single player standalone game and have been very pleasantly surprised at this great game! Thanks for the welcome KukriKhan! This is my first foray into anything like the Guild...or in fact any type of forum at all. I was pleasantly surprised to see a welcome posted so quickly.
I'm fairly "old" - 44 just before Christmas! I'd be interested to know if there are many baby-boomer members out there.
Because I work as a counsellor at a school I get to talk with heaps of children and young people from ages 5 right up to 16-17. Particularly with guys, computer games are a great common point of interest for us. I'm really into the games, especially the Total War series of course. In fact I'd like to see computer games used as eductional tools - there's heaps of history, story telling, art, critical thinking that may help to switch kids back into learning....or add to it for them.
What do other members think?
Anyway looking forward to keeping involved.~
Thanks Kukrikhan....I don't know if this thread is for asking questions so I started a new one. It's great to be here, this is a awesome game!
Is there anywhere I could actually find out about what all the downloads actually do? I tried downloading some campaigns for MTW, but there are just names in that list, nothing specific about what they're about. I tried the utilities - the same thing, just sends me to the 3D downloads page. I don't know what I'm downloading, help!

Hail all:
Name is Maximus, Im 43 years old and my occupation is a mechanical engineer. Im married and have (2) boys.
I was in the US Army for (4) years as a 19E tanker from 1980-1984 and I think thats why Ive fallen in love with RTW. Its the most incredible game Ive seen yet and after months of playing...Ive yet to tire of it.
Barbarian Invasion was a rude wake-up call for me after thinking I mastered RTW...I tried to play the Western Empire (Red) and got frustrated, because I don't think theres any way to beat BI playing the Western Empire. Everyone attacks you from all directions and theres too much to cover with too few resources (troops and Money).
I started a new game playing the Eastern Empire (Purple) and its going much better.
Anyhow, I hope to learn from the Masters in here and Thank You for allowing me to join your Forums.
Sincerely

I just realised I have not introduced myself properly. I live in England, work as a project manager and have a keen interest in history and particularly of the steppe and Mongol peoples in mediaeval times. I was an officer in the Royal Artillery and this sparked a lifelong interest in battlefield psychology.
My favourite game is MTW and I'm currently enjoying the XL mod hugely. Great thanks to all modders for their work.
I'm glad to have discovered this forum. It adds such an extra dimension to the game to be able to share one's own experiences and learn from others.

Hey people... My names Talon.
I'm a somewhat new player of MTW. I've read all the strategy threads here & have been playin for a week. I've so far only played in the early era/ hard difficulty rating. I really like the polish, for their retainers...
I was wondering. I'm fine on tactics/strategy, & unit selection for the most part, But I've had a problem in my last few matches, & that was, My king or major generals will die off, & I'll be left with only a 2 or 3 star general. Which is disgustingly frustrating when your attacking a large force with a 6 star+ general.
Any advice on gaining command for my generals? What influences gains? Just number of victories, or is it also the difficulty of those battles? Is more command gained for offense, or defense? Are there any other factors affecting command advances? Anything you could tell me would be greatly appreciated.

The only way to gain command stars is to win battles unfortunatly. However, you can get good-when-outnumber and expert attacker/defender virtues if you often win under these conditions.
Your royal line is also important. If the King has high command and high influence, his sons also tend become great generals upong maturing. However, if his command ability is higher than seven, there is a good chance that his sons will be zero-star duffers for some reason.

Son of Fergus indeed =P
Too bad the celts are just a nuisance to the brits and not a seperate entity of the game =P but I'll have to try out those highland clansmen, they're supposed to be low-support cost, & my upkeep is getting up there, I'm fighting just to pay for my continued troop production right now =P But I guess that's the game in a nutshell. Unfortunately I'm romping through constantinople & the Holy Land right now, but I'll get those clansmen eventually. =)

Ludens, thats great stuff, thank you!
SO all victories regardless of kills/valour gained/forces faced stand to rank you up the same? Hmm.. That's slightly dissapointing, but at the same time good news, I guess!
Another question now =) Since you seem to be the one to ask... The other stats, Piety, Influence, & Accumen... , Can they be changed? How are they gained? & what are there effects, respectively? I know governors effect the income of a province via accumen, & Dread prevents revolts... But that's about all I know. Any help? Specifically, On influence.
Also can someone explain how you open trade via boats? I made some caravels & sent them out in a chain over 6-8 ocean territories, along with my docks & tradinhg posts, but noticed no real change in the 30-50 trade income in those territories, I don't get it, am I missing something? Is there more to it then building the boats/docks/trading post & putting some boats in the ocean where other docks are.... ( and every connecting square between yours & theres )
Sry for all the Q's. :help:

I dropped out of High-school to play Starcraft/Starsiege tribes/Myth: The Fallen lords. Seriously... You couldnt keep me at school with a gun, when online gaming was waiting at home.
I've recovered =P lol... Im a healthy & succesful adult, & almost a college graduate now ( at 21 ), but yeah... Computer games are WAY too engrossing & distracting for kids & teenagers. Seriously... I'm a prime example, & games have only gotten better / more engrossing since.
God knows what would've to me had I discovered Ever'crack earlier =P
It's not to say that games don't stimulate thought & study, they do, I study the crap out of every game I play, from guides to forums, to films, & practice practice practice, but it's not the kind of study that leads to success in school =P

Hello everyone. I'm a big fan of the Total War series even though i only have MTW. I've had the game for more than a couple of years now and have completed it victoriously on a few occasions. I love history, primarily Roman and Dark Age European history and how the barbarians shaped modern Europe. Being a desecendant of one of the steppe peoples i find myself interested particularly in the origins and history of peoples like the scythians, huns, sarmatians, magyars etc.
Looking forward to many good discussions here.

Oh, and what do you mean by "virtues"?
virtue - 1) Behavior showing high moral standards: paragons of virtue.
A quality considered good or desirable in a person: patience is a virtue
A good or useful quality of a thing: Mike was extolling the virtues of the car | There's no virtue in suffering in silence
Archaic: virginity or chastity, especially of a woman
(New Oxford Dictonary of English)
In the game, your unit leaders (whether they are king, prince, general, governor or just commaning officer of a group of peasants) will develop vices and virtues (often indicated as V&V's), like good/bad commander, pious/heretic, drunkard, corrupt, herioc leader, great warrior and so on, that will affect their performance either in battle or as governor. Most of them directly influence piety, command, acumen, loyalty or dread, but some are less noticable, for example susceptibility to bribes or increases/decreases in farming, trade or mining income. Agents do not get V&V's.
The other stats, Piety, Influence, & Accumen... , Can they be changed? How are they gained? & what are there effects, respectively? I know governors effect the income of a province via accumen, & Dread prevents revolts... But that's about all I know. Any help? Specifically, On influence.
Yes, they can be changed, most often through V&V's. Most V&V's are random, but there methods to increase your generals stats.
Influence can be gained by succesful crusades, conquering provinces and relieving sieges of your allies' castles. Failed crusades or losing provinces decreases influence. Influence improves loyalty of generals and provinces and should make it easier to bend other nations to your will. Also, high-influence kings tend to get sons with higher stats, and also will get an occasional one- or two-star general or admiral when recruiting.
Loyalty is mainly dependent on the King's influence, but marrying a princess to a general or giving him titles also helps. Treason trails may increase the loyalty of other generals, provided they succeed. If they fail, expect a loyalty hit, not in the least with the tried general. If all else fails, keeping generals in the King's stack will make them more loyal, as well as making it impossible for them to revolt. Loyalty determines susceptibility to bribes and the chance a general will revolt against you. A low-loyalty, high-command general commanding a powerful stack is a severe liability, especially if he is of royal blood or married to a princess.
Piety is gained by staying in high-zeal provinces. An inquisition trail can give both piety-increasing and piety decreasing V&V's, provided the defendant does not get burned. Commanding crusades also increases piety. Piety is mainly useful as defence against inquisitors. Also, high-zeal provinces don't take wel to low-piety governors and low-zeal provinces don't like high-piety governors.
Dread scares the populace into loyalty. It is gained by killing prisoners on the battlefield or ordering all rebels put to death after a rebellion. Remember though that the first action also results in a lower morale for the army and the second decreases the hapines of the population (although both actions need to be carried out two or three times before the adverse effects appear).
There is no known way to gain acumen, but with a governor it increases the provinces income with ten procent and with the king it increases the kingdom's income with two percent.
To trade you need a trading post or higher merchant, a dock and an unbroken line of ships to a port held by a neutral or allied faction. You cannot trade with your own or enemy provinces, or with provinces that do not have a port. Also remember that profits from exports are shown in the merchant building-scroll and not the port building-scroll. The port derives income from importing goods from other factions (I though it was 20% of the export profits, but I am not sure).
Incidentally, if you want to ask more questions, you should start your own thread in the Entrance Hall. This thread is just for introductions.

It's not to say that games don't stimulate thought & study, they do, I study the crap out of every game I play, from guides to forums, to films, & practice practice practice, but it's not the kind of study that leads to success in school =P
Hey talonferguson.....thanks for your comments...I can see what you mean.
Heck I would I have loved History a la Medieval Total War when I was at school.
:book: :bounce:
It's just that when I see a significant number of kids struggling with mainstream academic work, it'd be great to somehow channel the energy and enthusiasm they have for games into something that does contribute to their school success.
The Head of English at my school apparently wrote a paper on this - he was a Diablo fan back then - he's left us now unfortunately.
Anyway.....here's to many victories on the fields of MTW for you.....hope you enjoy the org

Depends on who you are. Age of Empires:Rise of Rome made me interested in ancient history. And RTW only added to that interest.

I signed up for an Ancient Civilizations course in high school after playing Centurion: Defender of Rome. Anyone else remember that game? Its availible as abandonware nowadays.

THanks Ludens, You the man!
MatrixMan... Will kids ever be engrossed in learning? Im skeptical =P
My 8th grade history teacher had us do a Paper-&dice 'risk' game for japanese history, on a huge board, assigning a rice value to each square, I'm amazed now at how much it was like Shoguns strategy mode. I also did a 'jeopardy' on middle eastern culture. I won both these games =P Hardy-har. but they were my most remembered study subjects, without a doubt, because of this competitive, interactive approach.
I dunno... Maybe tie lessons into a MMORPG 'quest' type system =P and let the kids play WOW all day =)
I think we're a long way from grasping an entertaining learning system, where kids would prefer school over.... anything but =P
but it's a great idea. It'll happen someday, In our lifetimes? I wonder.
I'll take my rants to a more appropriate forum now =)

Hello folks. Im little off from net around these times, but I try to pop in and discuss about things when possible. I have been playing rome total war for god knows how long and haven't played anything else since. Im going to try out total realism since it seems to change the colours of the troops a little more bearable, like those horrible eachaching parthians!

~ Hello everyone!
My name is Crian, I'm technically new here but I've been reading these forums for the past 2 years, and I felt that it's time I started posting. :2thumbsup:
I'm from the Philippines (and probably the ONLY one), and I'm a single player veteran of the Total War series. I've never played online before (high-speed internet in my hometown is expensive and we can't afford it so there...) I played Shogun for a year, then Medieval, and finally, Rome. I'm currently playing Rome: Total Realism because vanilla became so boring after a year. So hello again to everyone and I hope someday I could contribute something worthwhile to the community.
By the way, English is not my native language so kindly forgive any mistakes. :laugh4:

:hide: Arrgghhhh! What is it!? Make it go away!!
Welcome!
but it`s just a naughty girl...
and i can not maki it go away... help?
Thanks Matrixman! That's actually a very tough question... and I really can't give a simple answer. :sweatdrop:
In terms of the atmosphere, I feel that Shogun is the best as opposed to the other two (putting in consideration the time at which each game was released). The throne room, the excellent music and sound as well as the movies really immersed me in the game experience. In terms of gameplay... Medieval because of the huge variety! Overall though, it would be Rome (with RTR of course) because of all the features added through the lessons learned from the past two games... so there. :2thumbsup:
