There are no good pics of me, so you'll have to settle with this pretentious, fascist one:

Promised to post newer pics of the dogs, so here they are. Taken while waiting for our turn at a wheeled sled-cart race this September.

This is Samba, the little one from my previous pics (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showpost.php?p=1234906&postcount=509). Mostly grown up, now about a year and a half old.
https://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5762/dsc0659ae1.jpg

This is Cleo. She is Samba's litter-mate sister, we acquired her a few months after him.
https://img136.imageshack.us/img136/5048/dsc0658iu8.jpg

And finally Natasha. She's coming up on 3 years at the end of this month.
https://img227.imageshack.us/img227/2360/dsc0671ip6.jpg

Still waiting for a decent snow here. If we get a 5-6" dump, I'm going to try a little skijouring. Hospital photos and xrays will be posted if this occurs. ~D

Yes, they are Siberian Huskies. Before we got her spayed, Natasha was quite the skank. :laugh4: There is another Siberian male in our neighborhood she was all over.

Here's one of her in her "natural" environment. This is 2 winters ago.

Yeah "we", meaning your hounds and you. Natasha certainly looks happy in the snow from 2 years ago. I feel bad for Samba, Cleo and her... they must miss the 'real' winter. Man, look at the musculature of their hindquarters... they're just begging to dig in and pull something. :)

Fine animals. You should be proud.

Love the Cuba pics. It's a place I'd love to visit sometime.

Since outside of studying rowing is what I spend most of my time on (as rower, but more as coach of a W4+) it's about time I bored you all to death with more rowing photo's... just a small local trial this time, the Zijlhead. Purple are mine, light blue the other student club of Leiden. A surprisingly sunny day made for pleasant rowing, viewing and coaching - and dangerous cycling from the accompanying supporters of each team! It's a race of some 4,5 km as a first indication of the relative position of our racing teams just before the start of the long-distance season, and a welcome goal for a lot of training.

Nice shots Geoffrey. I especially like the middle two. The shots in your gallery of several boats (forgive me if that isn't the right term) in the water at odd angles to each other are strangely pleasing to view.

BTW, I noticed in some shots where you can see an oar in the water that the water has a natural-looking brownish tint to it - and it isn't mud. Is that from peat bogs in the area? Just curious.

Geoffrey S
02-13-2008, 01:05
Cheers. Over the next months there are a couple of regattas, so there should be plenty more of those shots with numerous boats scattered across a waterway.

Not certain what causes the brownish tint. It's a pretty common feature across all parts of Holland I can think of. Though I don't know exactly what causes it I can say that the water near where the photos were taken have a fairly sticky, indeed non-muddy bottom from the times I've been swimming there (not always intentionally...).

Gregoshi
02-13-2008, 04:23
Geoffrey, here's another shot of yours I like. I think I'd have liked to have had the man in the boat in focus and the crew out of focus, but I don't know if I'd have seen it that way at time of the shot (hindsight, alas!). Regardless, it is an interesting shot as-is with the man and the rowers checking out each other as he passes.

One of those things. I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time, and just saw him going by as my old crew shot past - the whole race was a matter of over 4,5 km cycling at high speed, jumping off the bike to take pictures, racing to catch up again... fun, and certainly creates more chances for spontaneous photos like the above.

Glad you like the second photo. Those are my rowers, and they were rather pleased too!

Ichi, leave the sideburns, and the goatie, shave in between, way cooler. Just a tip, I know you didn't ask but anyway. Matter of fact looks like you could even get away with a full outline beard, real thin, single line from ear to ear. That would exude more style as well.

Sinan,

It's an art gallery owned corporately by two friends of mine, along with their architectural office. I can be found there quite frequently. The musicians are both friends and colleagues (except my brother :grin2:). Not all of them are professional musicians. For instance, one of them is the calligrapher who made what you see right behind the tip of my right shoulder.

Me being a lazy old slob though hired my taxi out early to drive me around before work, asking the driver, who I know very well, to stop whenever I saw a nice opportunity for a shot. My taxi fare was twice what it normally is, probably explains why she wasn't complaining, but it was worth it, all the same :2thumbsup:

This time, the Heineken Roeivierkamp in Amsterdam. Two days of almost only eights, meaning a lot of teams of four combine. Distances rowed are 2500, 250, 750 and 5000 metres over the two days; all distances are calculated back to the 250 metre average time, added up and the lowest score in a division wins. Many different teams take part (over 300) - from freshmen to the national eight, and a number of foreign boats too.

And again, I've got some pictures... only saturday, because the weather on sunday was rotten.

The team I coach (half, anyway). Did very well in their division.

The newly formed national eight. They won.

Geoffrey, that second picture screams SPEED. That is a great picture that captures the motion. :2thumbsup: I don't know much about rowing but the water looks awful for it - so choppy.

Geoffrey S
03-11-2008, 00:46
They certainly were fast! It's an effect I'll aim to reproduce over the next few races, I was just experimenting last weekend. And although the choppy water has been worse, but it certainly broke up some of the less experienced crews; as witnessed by the following photo...

https://img156.imageshack.us/img156/2290/dsc8049lp5.th.jpg (https://img156.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dsc8049lp5.jpg)

I've been asked to take pictures of a formal ball in a month's time, but I'm not entirely certain how to go about it and have little experience of photographing posing people. Equipment is a Nikon D80, and I've arranged a SB-80 flash for the evening - but has anyone here got some experience with similar things and suggestions for settings/angle of the flash for at least decent (so, not overlit) pictures? I'll be practising this weekend, so any tips are more than welcome!

Gregoshi
03-11-2008, 01:30
Geoffrey, your image isn't displaying. I can't help you with the posed portraits other than I'd either get a diffuser for the flash or use bounce flash if the SB-80 (800?) can do so. Either should soften the flash to they don't look so harsh.

Geoffrey S
03-11-2008, 08:47
It's an SB80; I've edited my post to clear that up. Yeah, I think it does allow bounce flash. That's pointing at a wall/ceiling to light the subject from a different angle, right? Would it help to arrange a white screen off the side of the subject for that?

Thanks in advance!

Edit: scratch that, it is an 800. Found some nice examples for that.

How big is the group? What is the setting? What lights do you have available?

If you can get up-close with your camera+flash, definately buy a diffuser cap for you flash. They're expensive though, €20,- for just a small, simple piece of plastic, but it's well worth your money, you'll see.

Other than that you can also improvise and use a plastic-throw away drinking cup to place it over your flash, won't look professional but will save you €20,-. If you don't want either and the ceiling isn't too high, flash indirectly but be sure to get the shuttertime right, as always with flashing (around 1/160).

Check www.koopdigitaal.nl for the best prices on camera equipment...

If you have to photograph a large group of people and you need to get some distance between you, forget the diffuser and just aim your SB800 directly at the group. My advice: if you don't need to flash, don't use it. Using the available light creates a better image 9 out of 10 times.

Also, get some practice with the SB-800 before going at it, it's got loads of options (you'll hardly need any of them though, just put it on auto).

On the white screen: you can buy a nice JinBei reflector 1mtr for just €30,- which has 5 different 'colours', gold, silver, white, black and transparant, works great but mainly from close up.

Check out the surrounding for lights, bring your camera to do some test shots and enjoy!

It's about time you showed up Mith. :laugh4:

Geoffrey S
03-13-2008, 17:22
Cheers Mithrandir, I'll certainly have a look at those options, thanks! I'll probably go for the diffuser cap, since I can have eventual costs paid for by the club.

Groups shouldn't be particularly large most of the time - occasionally teams of some eight people at most, but mainly separate photos of dates. Setting is the bestuurskamer of the club - ceiling is about 3-4 metres away, and is mostly a reflective metal, walls are white. There's some lighting, but not particularly bright, I think some four hanging ceiling lamps.

I'll see if I can get some test shots in next week.

Mithrandir
03-13-2008, 18:28
Something I forgot to mention, you can also use the onboard flash on your D80 and use the SB800 to flash as a slave unit, placing it nearer to the group (diffused), should have a decent effect...

Greg I keep checking this thread for your pictures, but they're hard to find nowadays ~;)

Some very nice pictures there Viking

It snowed on Easter Sunday around my area. I (irrationally) decided to go out there and get a few shots (freezing was not part of the plan, but I did that anyway). The snow was melting at the time, so I was running around quite quickly to try and get as many in as possible before it all went.

I'm too lazy to post them all in "img" tags, resize them for those on small screen sizes and add "ex" tags, so I'll just post a link to the relevant slideshow:

It's not a fighting breed. It is part of the mastiff family specifically from the neapolitan mastiff tho not quite, and a rare one at that. A lot of people in the area seem to think it's a fighting breed just by it's looks and size. He's extremely friendly with people and other animals/dogs. And he's only 11 months old and can live up to 15yrs in dog years since she is taking reaaally good care of him. And Right now he weighs just about 120lbs. out of 140-150lbs.

edit, ever considered working as a model? You have a good face for it.

I've been approached in the street a couple of times by people wanting to use me as a model, but I've never gone for it, I was busy both times. I wouldn't really know how to get in to it, apart from that happening again.

Having trouble seeing the images too.

Another race last weekend, the Randstad Regatta. Our first 2k race of the season, with some very nice results and some bitter disappointments for our teams (freshman four beats second-year four!). The set-up allows for some good opportunities: six teams start side-to-side, so it allows for some nice pictures. That is, if they start close to where I'm standing... otherwise it ends up being somewhat tough to get interesting photos.

Very nice and somewhat deceptive. Was the, eh, red stuff meant to be misleading?

At first you think it's like an ipod commercial with red earphones; then when you see the same color on the shirt it doesn't make sense; then you look at the hand and realize what it is.

No it looks good because blood by itself is just that; simple message I get it. However a casual observer may think you're holding a false color mp3 player. Maybe it should be in the art thread in the Backroom. :artist:

I took a total of 21 photos before the storm started slowing down, but that was the only one that had any lightning in frame. The best part, imo, are the smaller tendrils off the main bolt.

Here's the Exif data:

Camera Make: FUJIFILM
Camera Model: FinePix S5200
Image Date: 2008:06:08 19:52:40
Flash Used: No
Focal Length: 8.2mm (35mm equivalent: 51mm)
CCD Width: 5.84mm
Exposure Time: 15.000 s
Aperture: f/4.5
ISO equiv: 100
White Balance: Auto
Metering Mode: Matrix
Exposure: Manual
Exposure Mode: Manual
I went with the 15 second exposure to increase my chances of catching any lightning bolts. Then I pointed it in the direction of what looked like a particularly active part of the sky and started taking back to back shots. After I got that shot, I decided to lower the ISO to 64 and squeezed the aperture down more too, but I didn't get any more stikes in frame to see if it would've helped. Also, I was taking pictures through a window at the time, which also introduced some undesirable effects.

Xiahou, thanks for the info. No real surprises I guess. How did you attempt to focus in the dark like that? The focus is about the only thing to improve on that picture. Achieving a good focus is pretty difficult in the dark. I've had questionable "success" myself trying to shoot the sky at night with digital. Neither of my lenses has a distance scale for focusing like my old 35mm film SLR. With that I could just set it to "infinity" and forget the focusing. As for shooting out a window, there isn't much choice unless you have a garage or covered porch/deck...and the wind isn't blowing the rain under the cover.

w&f and R'as - nice bird shots. R'as, that Kea shot is awesome. That bird is gorgeous in a kinda plain way.

Just out of boredom I skimmed through my photos on the HD and selected a couple portraits of Mouzafphaerre the magnificent, from October 2007 and Spring 2008.

Taken in October 2007 at friends' art gallery, which I frequent. The one on the left had been posted earlier.

To all those who are thrilled with LEN 's decision to continue his superiority by genetical means:

Dedicated to that old Country song saying:

"Cleaning the dishes in the dead of the night,
Before the parents hit the town, sweetheart,
Is all why I want you right here right now
Expressing your love to me with a sponge and detergent"

Well the .org being my most frequented forum, I thought it right to put any photos I did have, here!

I present, the Second, Third and Fourth pictures of pevergreen on the internet. Thats right, you have the honour of seeing me. Well, until you actually see the pictures.

First up, myself and Cimmerian, another member here:

Secondly, the no longer, lovely lady:

https://img78.imageshack.us/img78/8782/woop1jv6.jpg

And last but not least, I thought it prudent, with the discussion of who is the best looker amongst us men, to firmly pull myself out of the race, with this:

Re added photos, even though no one will look. I'm over hating her now.

Bah, Mouza, I had wanted to get either an electric guitar or a darbuka (= goblet drum?), and I had decided on a still-unlearned-to-play electric guitar. :wall:

Percussion ftw !

Dang, what kind of cell phone do you have? There's NO way mine could get such a nice, clear shot while moving.Well, I actually stopped long enough to take the photo. Other than that, I also upped the saturation just a tad as it looked a little washed out in the original.

The phone is a VX9900 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LG_enV_%28VX9900%29).

Where along the Susquehanna was that picture taken Xiahou? Terrain-wise it kinda looks like the west branch north of Sunbury.

Actually, it's the main branch- just above Wilkes-Barre, on the West side looking South. :2thumbsup:

Okay, that makes sense since that is more in your neck of the woods. The mountains just looked a little too far away for the pictures to be from the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. Shows how much I know about that area. I pretty much just know it from the views from I-81 and the PA Turnpike. Speaking of which, I'll be driving by that way on August 2nd on my way to Canada for vacation. I'll give you a mental wave as I drive by. ~ :laugh4:
