Thanks, but how bout the lightning bolt K. ?

Kraellin
08-27-2005, 20:59
mith,

the bolt was from paint shop pro's 'tubes'. there is a 'lightning' set which i used for that. i had to try several times to get one of the kind i wanted and the place i wanted. this was done on a separate layer so that i could erase out the bits that wouldnt show behind the various other objects in the scene.

fun stuff :)

Hi Kraellin, Hi Mithrandir,

thanks for your versions of my pic.
I like the blue one, Krae, it's a nice evening mood.
Almost like the blue hour. Ever tried to capture that kind of light situation with a camera?
It's not that difficult actually. I'll see if I can upload an example.
Mithrandir, i like your's, too. Nice filter. Looks like a Postcard.

This is one of my favourite pictures in the world, from a book made in 1934, called The Story of The World In Pictures. I do believe that it is one of the only copies remaining. It's an amazing picture. The entire book is full of amazing pictures. Sorry about it being sideways. Anyway, for those of you who might not know what the picture shows, it's a zepellin going over Washington, with Capitol Hill in the foreground.

Yep. Not much in the way of victims though. Most of the trees are less than a foot thick. Lots of tamaracs and balsam pines. Tall though. Lots of them were 70"+. In dense forest they tend to grow tall and thin. They're all looking for the sunshine.

As I had mentioned earlier in this thread (back a page or three) my daughter goes to a branch of the Paul Green School of Rock Music. This past Saturday we went to the Punk show put on by the kids (aged 8-18). I'm not a fan of punk, but I enjoyed the show much more than I expected. those are nice pics Gregoshi. Your f-stop is perfect but your shutter speed could be faster; i see a lot of blurring. did you use an automatic function? that's usually where the blur comes from; the camera overcompensates for the low light even if you manually set the aperture.

Gregoshi
12-18-2005, 08:23
soly, I had the camera set to shutter priority and shutter speed set at 1/60 second. The camera was setting the aperature. This was the fastest shutter speed I could get with any hope capturing enough light in many cases. I have the camera (Panasonic DMC-FX20) set for as much sensitivity as I can squeeze out of it. I usually use a tripod at the back of the room but I decided to sit in the audience with my wife for these last two sets of pictures. Some were taken free hand others with the tripod set up as a monopod. I don't use a flash as that makes the pictures a sterile white light and doesn't capture the atmosphere of the concert's coloured spotlights and fog.

Also regarding the blur, some of the sharpness was lost compressing the file down to an internet friendly file size. However, the other problem I run into is focusing. The autofocus seems hit or miss with the lighting level even though I take care in putting the focus zone on the subject and avoiding forground mic stands or the background. Many times the focus is just a bit off. Manual focus isn't much better - the camera does a 4x zoom on the center of the view to "help" you focus correctly. It isn't much help when the lighting is constantly changing and the focus target is moving... I use the burst feature to get 3-4 pictures in quick succession to avoid extremely fast motion, sudden drops in the light level and/or goofy expressions and hopefully get at least one good picture in the burst. Of course this doesn't help if the focus is off. The focusing mechanism, auto and manual, is the one feature I'd wish was better on the camera.

Are you saying that setting a faster shutter speed will freeze the motion more and still get enough light? BTW, thanks for the feedback soly.

solypsist

hmmm...your camera isnt turning up.

it's not an slr, is it?

this might sound wierd, but if there's a Pets/Children setting ,try using it. It will force the fastest speed possible with the given light. the alternative is to use a flash and set the white balance to flash and not natural light.

Opps - typo. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 (5mp, 12x zoom, image stablizer). It is not a DSLR but it is about the same size as one.

There is no "children/pet" setting on the camera. "Party" and "night portrait" seem to be about the closest to such a mode. However, while looking this up in the manual, I came across the section on the EV (exposure value) setting. I think one of my problems is I got myself confused on how to adjust the EV setting. I was adjusting this to the negative when I think I should have been adjusting it to the positive.:san_undecided:

Wait just a second...

Not only were you in the PPCLI, you were a Peacekeeper as well?

My friends, you are looking at the best Canada has to offer. There's not an NHL star who can hold a candle to these guys.
Though I'm not Canadian and I despise the UN I can drink to that. It takes alot of courage to be a peacekeeper, or any kind of soldier really, even more so in the Balkans. Cheers Goofball!

Something you need to understand is the depth of respect Canadians hold for our Peacekeepers. Up here, we see our Peacekeepers as soldiers, firemen, cops, doctors, and ambassadors, all rolled into one.

In Canada, there is no higher calling than to be a Peacekeeper.

Ahh, more wretched jelousy than bitterness. It's a bit of a bummer sometimes to work painfully hard on something nice that you can't afford yourself and that you know will belong to someone else.

It's cool. I always thought Peacekeepers had an important role to play in the world, if utalized properly. Although we can argue for hours about how they are deployed, where they are they are often very helpful to civilians and the world. Although the system for accepting them can be abused (re: Bulgaria), those who aren't just random people given by the government tend to be strong willed and good-hearted individuals.

I was thinking about becoming one for a while, but I dunno.

Cheers anyway Goofball.

Gregoshi

Thanks soly. I'm slowly getting there. This batch came out much better than last month's.

Regarding the clarity, there are a variety of things at work - some of it is my camera skills (or lack thereof) and some is my photo editing "skills".

1) I think I'm losing some of it via the JPG compression to get the file size to something reasonable for internet use - over 1MB down to about 80KB. For example, the last picture in its original size is razor sharp to my eyes, yet the trimmed down version isn't as sharp. If there is a trick to maintaining the sharpness, I don't know of it.

2) Another issue is a very short depth of field because I've got the aperature wide open to take in as much light as I can. The singer may be in focus but the bass player 2 feet behind them isn't.

3) #2 is compounded by the focus mechanism. The short depth of field isn't very forgiving of small focusing errors. The camera's autofocus is dodgy in the low and constantly changing lighting conditions and the manual focus assist just sucks - the only real complaint I have about my camera. The manual focus ring has no distance scale or markings of any sort, so I can even set the focus based on a known distance.

4) Digital noise reduction adjustment: on the pictures with a performer bathed in a coloured spotlight, they often suffer from digital noise. I use a digital noise reduction feature of Paint Shop Pro and this softens the focus.

I can shoot in RAW format but then I lose the ability to shoot in burst mode. The ability to shoot 4-5 pictures over a 2 second period usually nets at least one good picture with the frequent lighting changes during the shows.

One thing I was able to do since last month's pictures, thanks to reading the camera manual again, was increase the shutter speed to 1/100th this time around rather than use 1/60th of a second like last time.

Hehe, you should start a "Photo Clinic" thread soly.

When you upload to photobucket, go into the folder it's saved in and under the photo there will be codes. You want the "[IMG]" code. Just copy and paste it here.

Sorry if this is too far off-topic, but this seemed like the place to ask....

I'm thinking of upgrading my digital camera from my current FujiFilm s3000 to a s5200. My biggest complaint with the s3000 was 'shutter lag' or the amount of time that would go by from pushing the button to the actual picture being taken.

According to reviews I've read, the s5200 is much better in that regard- having almost zero lag if you lock focus ahead of time. Other than that, it has a 10x instead of 6x zoom and a number of other seemingly useful features.

Anyone have any insight?

Here are a couple of my favorites that Ive taken with my s3000:

the s5200 looks like a good camera for you. the aperture max of 3.2 means you won't lose much speed when zooming in (this is important since you might want to consider lens options down the road) and the antishake option makes it extra handy.

you might also just want to spend the $ and just get an SLR, since you'll probably get bored with the fuji (which is close to one, but not) and want that extra power, speed, and more lense options soon enough.

Thanks for the info. I can find the s5200 for <$300, I was kind of under the impression that I couldnt touch a decent slr for anywhere near that much. If Im wrong, I'd certainly look into it though.

thanks Krae. since i know you're interested in processing images, here's how it was done:

The contrast for this image is controlled by three masked Curves, one for the sky, one for the kite, and one for the kite and foreground. The net result is that the sky is a little more dramatic than it might otherwise have been, the kite is more vibrant, and so so. I also shifted the colors of the kite to a set that I felt was more complementary to the scene.

I have studied the celts and the scots are indeed genetically celtic as are the irish, welsh, bretons, galecians, cornish, manx, and even some english in northumbria and yorkshire due to the fact that those areas have gotten genetic testing done and they indeed found they had celtic blood similar to the welsh.

They are so celts and I know that for a fact. Ignorence of people not knowing who the celts were makes me angry however me with my knowledge of the celts usually wins these debates due to the fact of how ignorent the other side is.

Now, now. Be not angry and call not the other side ignorant.

Ignorence of people not knowing who the celts were makes me angry however me with my knowledge of the celts usually wins these debates due to the fact of how ignorent the other side is.
Sorry if I pissed you off a wee bit. It was sort of a joke. Seriously though, I've only ever come across a single DNA survey and that showed the majority of Scots to be far closer to the English, French, and Danes than to the Irish and Welsh (it also showed the Basques in with that group, which is craziness). As to the Northumbria thing.. Most English people have some "Celtic" blood in them, esspecially in Western extremities, but Yorkshire and Northumbria are both fairly solid in their Englishness. Don't worry though, this survey was on a rather cheep documentory called Blood of the Vikings, so you should be safe.
