Finally we bought ourselves a digital camera. I can't wait to get out! Now I can at last take pictures with little light and up close. Not spectacular but I am very happy with this picture as it means a personal photo revolution

Very, very nice shot DJ. Welcome to the digital world. I found I'm much more willing to experiment with digital than I was with film. The instant verification of your shot is priceless. Of course, now we expect you to post pictures here on a regular basis.

I was at the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts on Saturday in State College (home of Penn State). This art festival attracts over 300 artists and craftsmen - and lots of people. The result is diverse group of interesting people to photograph. Here are few shots I took:

https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/CentPAArtFest07Jul_11sm.jpg
The gentleman below was in a booth that was selling "stum-sticks" - basically a very skinny, three string guitar. I wasn't sure if he was the craftsman, a strum-stick artist or just a customer. Regardless, he presented a very cool character for the camera.

For the hot July days in Pennsylvania, the festival sets up water areas for kids (or drunk college students) to cool off.

I saw the girl on the left doing a little dance step as she walked down the street. I started grinning at her and she saw me. Realizing I caught her being a little goofy - and that I had a camera, she stopped and made a very silly face and pose for me. After I took a picture, her girlfriend came running up to get into the shot. The result is below.

The photo of the man with the afro hair is very striking, Greg. Do you ever feel intruding people's "sphere of privacy" when taking their photos? Or do you generally try your best to avoid having their faces staring into the camera?
No people for me yet  :
I particularly like the contrast of the grey wood and the wings of the butterfly catching the sun. Compositionwise I think it would have been nicer if the butterfly covered the gap between the wooden boards, but I was happy enough it didn't fly off immediately.

Nice closeups DJ. I've done flowers but haven't tried insects save for a large spider we had outside our house last year. What kind of digital camera did you get? BTW, where do you find such perfectly formed flowers? Most of mine have annoying flaws.
To answer your question about taking pictures of people, I have a difficult time with it unless they are in a public "performance" situation like the School of Rock pictures I post. Taking pictures of people on the street is very awkward for me as I too am aware of that sphere of privacy. What I usually try to do is shoot from afar with a zoom lens so they aren't aware of me. I get (I think) more natural looks from the people - you know how some people get when they see a camera pointing at them. I was fortunate in that the afro-ed gentleman saw me, but didn't change expression. I had another lady I tried to take a picture of but she saw the camera pointing at her and waved me off, so I complied. The one of the girls was dumb luck. I had no idea they would pose for me. The problem I had on Saturday was that I wasn't fast enough in many instances. There were quite a few perfect pictures I saw but that I wasn't quick enough with the camera and lost the moment. Such is the hazard of shooting candids.
Our very own Mith is a master at taking pictures of people - and I'm talking about "look at the camera and smile" type pictures. He's been kind enough to share a few of his pictures with me privately and they are stunning. I don't know how he does it, but he captures the most natural looking expressions on their faces as I have ever seen. He seems unabashed about appoaching people for a picture which is something I wish I was more comfortable doing. Anyway, I wish he would share a few of his pictures with us here (hint, hint Mith).

The photo of the man with the afro hair is very striking, Greg.
Seconded
The blue/red background adds to the perfect look of that picture.
I share your difficulties with getting good shoots of people (especially close-ups) - that's why (so far) you will rarely see shots of people from me :embarassed:
@ DJ - very nice shots :2thumbsup:
A macro lens would actually be on my to-buy list, so I am as well interested to hear what equipment you are using.
@ Mith
Greg - made me curious.

I am using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ6: 7 Megapixel, 6x zoom and optical image stabilization.
BTW, where do you find such perfectly formed flowers?
They grow on our balcony (:tongue2:), the first one is a 1cm cactus flower actually. Here is a photo with not so perfect flowers, but the bumblebee in flight makes up for it:

:2thumbsup: Nice picture DJ!! That bee came out so good. How close were you to it? I have no objection to more flower pictures if you have them.
Up until January, I was using a Panasonic Lumix FZ20 (5mp, x12 zoom). I liked my Panasonic a lot. The only drawback I had with it was it showed a lot of digital noise in low light shots - which unfortunately was a large majority of my shooting.
Duke John

I would guess 5 to 10 cm. No zoom, doesn't work that close anyway.
I have no objection to more flower pictures if you have them.
Ok then!

That drop of water looks so perfect it is almost spoiling the photo as it is starting to look fake.
The only drawback I had with it was it showed a lot of digital noise in low light shots.
Still need to experiment with that. I am quite happy though that I have much room to play with dark scenes than with our old "mechanical" camera. I was once in a foggy wood with trees with moss on the bark with the sunlight highlighting certain spots. I so wished I had a good camera at that time.

You are right about the perfect water drop. I think that is my favourite picture yet. I've been meaning to spend some time with the flowers around our house. You are inspiring me to do so.
I am using a Panasonic Lumix DMC-LZ6: 7 Megapixel, 6x zoom and optical image stabilization.
Wow... this is the camera I got for my birthday monday.
I haven't used it yet...

I am using my video camera taking stills here. It has only 2.3 mega pixels and takes crappy pictures. That is why I wished for a separate camera for stills.
I am looking forward to use it now that Duke John has showed me its potential.

Here's a shot I took at dusk in Philadelphia last evening:
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/Philadelphia07Jul_11sm.jpg
The stone monstrocity in the forground is 30th Street Station (train & bus) - a monument to the early half of the last century. The glass and steel oddity in the background is the Amtrak building - a monument to the new century. The blue lights (on the left side) & white lights (on the right side) on the Amtrak building alternate colours every minute or two, the change sweeping diagonally from the bottom of the building to the top.
With this image I will admit to a little photo editing. 30th Street Station was rather dark in the original, so I brightened it up a little to show some detail on it rather than just a black shadow.

The same camera, what are the odds?! I agree fully with Greg that you now have a promise to fullfill, Sigurd.

Everything looks so sharp on your photo, Greg. How did you do that? Or is it because you resized the photo?
***
Took a picture of a sunflower with the sun at its back. I then noticed the left side of it having a nice graduation of the yellow leaves dissappearing into the white backlight. Photos like this provide for some nice material to be used for other things. This new hobby can keep me busy for quite some time

Everything looks so sharp on your photo, Greg. How did you do that? Or is it because you resized the photo?
I've found resizing has mixed effect. In the case of the buildings, resizing actually hurt the picture. If you look at the top of 30th Street Station, you will notice the "jaggies" (stepped effect) where the roof meets the sky. That is not present on the original. However, in the case of poor focus, shrinking the picture can help overcome that. My picture of the afro-haired gentleman is a perfect example. It looks really good at 800x640. However, look at it anywhere near actual size and you can tell he is not in focus. I have taken a number of School of Rock pictures that make great regular prints, but you wouldn't want to enlarge them to 8"x10" (or whatever the international equivalent is).
DJ, in just posting a few pictures, it seems to me you have a very good creative eye for a photograph. For me, that is the hardest part of photography - seeing the picture. You can't take great pictures if you don't see it and recognize it first. That sunflower picture is fantastic. I do look forward to seeing more from you. :2thumbsup:
Awesome Goofball! :2thumbsup:

I saw the jagged edge and I thought you might have resized in the pixel resize mode, although that would have probably resulted in even more jagged lines. Have you tried different resize techniques? I never/rarely get such obvious jagged lines.
And you are quite right about usefullness of using resizing to increase the sharpness. Very few of my photos are worth printing at 100% size. 7 megapixels is than convenient as you can easily downsize it for smaller prints.

You know duck hunting is traditionally done with a double barrel shotgun either side by side or under and over... that is for a very big duck.
BTW your absence was noted and we were worried where you had disappeared too... we should have been more worried for the ducks...

The colour theme was not intentional :beam: .
There was a 60th birthday party this weekend in one of the older parts of my city.
The building we ate at (not the red one) was down at the bayside.
It was sunny and the light on the water just asked to have its picture taken. I must say that the lights were nicer in the display that on the actual picture. I took several with different settings. I believe the one I posted was taken with ISO 400 and the longest open shutter setting I could find. The water became "more" blue than the real thing.
I bet the picture would have looked really nice if I used a more expensive camera with much longer shutter times.
Duke John
07-23-2007, 08:50
That water looks really good, SG. I don't think a longer shuttertime would have much improved it though. The water itself would only get more vague and, in my opinion, it is nice to be able to recognize the waves and ripples, gives it more texture.
Greg, the spiderweb photo has an unexpected (?) element; the web has a "twin" as the general form (standing ellips) of it can also be seen in the twigs to the left of it.

Thanks Greg.
I think I used an ISO 100, a 1/30 or 1/60 sec. at F2. I didn't have a tripod with me that day but the croq had no intention to move for the next hours, or so it seemed. :laugh4: The birds on the other hand were more flighty.
If it wasn't for the amazing pentax lens it wouldn't have been possible to take the picture. I'll see if I can share some more but most need scanning first.
People photography is very difficult because people tend to put on their photo-face when they realise that they are being photographed. If they aren't professionals this ususally means that they make a grimace.
To avoid that you need to be unobtrusive. When being with friends and family it's rather easy, you just need to become the guy who always takes pictures and soon people will stop bothering and won't break off their conversations just because you're fiddling with your camera again. Once they see the results they'll play along and you can make portraits where the subjects' faces are relaxed and natural.

Just, as some may know, return from a Scottish holiday. I, for once in my life, can actually say I did something useful with my time and took some photographs of an acceptable quality - not as brilliant as some of your exceptionally detailed and elegant pieces of artwork though. Unfortunately, some of them were taken at a terrible 1.1 mega-pixel at times when I didn’t take along my laptop to transfer the pictures too - my camera has a terrible memory size and I was rather afraid of any suspicious characters. Fortunately though, a select few are of the more suitable 4.0 quality which is the maximum my camera can perform.
These photographs were taken in St. Andrews, on the Isle of Mull and in Perth.

Mrs. Clegane and myself went to Speyer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speyer) yesterday. Originally we went to see the aquarium for which we had coupons - the aquarium turned out to be a major disappointment, so we spent most of the day just walking in the old city and enjoying the sunny day (there was also some kind of festival in the city so it was nice to go with the crowd and have lots of stuff to eat ~:))
Following are some pics.

I've got a lot of catching up to do.
You've got some nice shots there Omanes. I especially like the colourful buildings in that little town.
Geoffrey, those are great shots of DC. I especially like the night shots. Did you use a tripod or just rest the camera on a wall? The lit water fall is an excellent shot.
Very nice pix of Scotland Andres. I like that shot of the sail boats with the mountains in the background. Lochs and mountains make for a gorgeous combination.
Ser, those are outstanding pictures. The roof, the bikes, the statues, man on the bench, flower & pumpkin - wow. Your eye for a picture is amazing.
Thanks for sharing all those pictures.

Very nice pics everybody. I especially like the photo's of the statues. Almost as if you were making a portrait or capturing the statues in a still... that will occupy my mind for a while
Ser Clegane, that photo of the man on a bench is a sublime example of framing your subject!

The first cactus flower is also good, Kraellin, almost as if it glows. It inspired me to try to get it emit a blinding light:

Also went on a small holiday. I didn't take that many photo's though. But the one below should say enough how we spent one morning:
https://img390.imageshack.us/img390/731/indetentxq8.jpg
Another day in the trees.
A small tornado or downdraft hit a few miles from where I live last week. The news truck even came up from the city to take pics of this guy's backyard. We just went this morning.
This is one of the biggest pancakes I've seen. We didn't cut the tree up yet, maybe next week when we go back. When you cut the base of the tree, that whole pancake will snap back down like it's on springs and the trunk of the tree will move very quickly. You cut with both feet ready to run.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/horsesass/trees003.jpg
This one we did have to get off the roof.

I am not sure what you are saying here. But if you try to link the pictures on your machine directly, it won't work.
You have to upload them to a website like imageshack or photobucket.
There is a Imageshack control in the text editor when you are writing posts like this. It is found directly above the Submit reply button.
Just right click on any pictures in this thread and select properties and you will see where they are hosted.
speaking of which, I am using the Opera browser right now and there are some interesting additional info when right clicking - properties DonC's pictures.
It reveals that DonC is using a NIKON D100 camera when taking his pictures and Adobe Photoshop Elements 3.0 when handling them.
The latest picture was taken/uploaded 20.August 2007 18:37 and that his lens focal length was set on 26.

That's right, and just yesterday I discovered that Vista shows me that info as well when clicking a thumbnail in my pictures folder.:2thumbsup:
Also the D100 is a fine camera, my dad had it as well until he upgraded to the D200. Oh and the guy who photographed Crown Princess Victoria visiting the OECD also had one as I found out yesterday.:dizzy2:
I also wanted to add that Jillian is a cute girl, my last post made it look like your lawn was more important, well, it isn't. :2thumbsup:

08-30-2007, 17:34
Actually, Mrs. Corleone is using the Nikon D100, and it is a fine piece of electroncs. She received it from proud Grampy Corleone (my Dad) when he upgraded himself to the D200, in recognition of all her fine shutterbug work with the camera he had given her for Christmas last year. Mrs. Corleone is quite the photographer. The Don? Well, I'm about as good at photography as I am at lawn care. :laugh4:
And don't worry about your comment Husar, I'm the :clown: that started talking about my lawn in the first place.
I see a very happy child! :2thumbsup:

Well, I have never posted a picture of myself here, and I fear that people are beginning to associate my avatar with me more than anything. :P A few years ago learned the importance of NOT posting pics of myself or giving away personal info on the internet. :P I have decided to edit the picture of myself before posting it, as to hide some identifiable features. :P

lol, yeah. Just enough to remove some recognizable features. Where I couldn't gloss or re-colour it, I covered it up. :P
EDIT: What I used to make it look so artificial is a program called FaceGen modeller that recreates you face in full 3-D from a pic you provide. I put the pic of me in, and let it generate the face, fixed the texture a bit, then overlaid it over the real pic. :P
I just recreated my girl's face. :)

It is not her hair, but in the trial version, you cannot have custom hair (and you have to put up with the annoying SI :P).
EDIT2: The eyes do not look exactly like her's either. :P
Hey, why don't ya'll create your face in 3-D and post it like I did?

Why would you want my head in 3D if you can have a real picture? You could even invite me and pay my flight to see me in real 3D. ~D
You'd have to take the 4th Dimension into account though Husar, because it would take time to get there.

Nice pics, Greg
Apparently you got either a nice tele or got really close to the owl (although the second pic would probably hint at a tele ~;))
@Viking
nice buttefly shot (the flowers actually look like the ones we have on our balcony) - I think I have to make more use of by macro (so for I am more using it as an extra tele than for its intended purpose).
Do you use a tripod? I found that keeping the focus is not really very easy when trying to do macros :wall:
Gregoshi
11-06-2007, 17:04
Ser, I do have a tele (55-200mm) but I was less than 2 meters (5-6 feet) from the owl, so I was able to zoom in real tight on the owl's head. Actually, the reduced 800x600 image that I posted doesn't do the shot justice.
You are right about using a tripod for macro work - at least that is the suggested method for macro work. I keep a tripod in my van so I always have it with me but I'm usually too lazy to "drag" it out...which may explain my lack of success with macro shots. Funny, I don't have that attitude with low light/night shots but for some reason it seems a monumental effort for macro work. Go figure.
I have used tripod for space shots (no great success), but for macro I haven't. Unfortunately, now in the autumn it's typically dark by the time I arrive at house; so I feel I have no time to take macro photos. :sweatdrop:
I just noticed that the owl was alive, cool. :beam:

And Sinan, great set of pics. It's really nice to be able to see a person in context, with friends, with loved ones, etc. Feels much more complete. Thanks!
HAHA ! Good one Lemur!.
My pleasure for the pics, I've got a lot mroe but I have to either scan some of the older ones, or batch convert the newer recent ones (large size). I'd like to make a myspace of a webpage of some sort with all my pics. When I finally do I'll post a link to it. I've seen yours as well, they're great.
Indeed sometimes we really have the completely wrong impression of people on the internet. For example I'm almost 35, often when I read a post I tend to have this image about the person which is completely off the mark. Often I tend to assume (like an ass) that the pther person is at least the same maturity level, life experience etc, which is completely false. we are a very varied group here, and people of backgrounds frequent this forum. So it's normal we have to gear communication to a level that the majority can understand, particularly in Backroom topics.
When I first looked at this thread I was stunned as to how much younger a lot of folks are, and also because I completely had the wrong impression about them. It's a lot better when you see the person, their area, etc you have a much better sense of who the person is.
I almost always ask people I meet on the net for pictures, myspace or webpage links now because it instantly gives me a contextual reference. It also differentiates the bold from the more cautious.
I've actually met someone from the org in person, I should really post some pics of that meeting (if I have them somewhere ?). An old clan-mate, met him in Copenhagen, was really GREAT to meet a guy I'd been gaming with for years. You can make a lot of positive contacts and friendships through the net.
BTW how old do you guys think I look ? The million dollar question! Be frank !

They really are their name for some reason. Erasmus is my favorite as well, what the picture doesn't show is that he is rediculously big. Incredibly friendly animal, on friendly terms with all the dogs in the neighbourhood (not that a medium sized dog would have a chance) it's fun to watch him rub against them. The pillow behind Şükriye (what does that mean?) is that a Christmas present ?
The talk about cat names reminds of a weird thing from my college days: I lived for a while in a three-story house, with students living on all floors. We made a pact that all pets had to be named after mass murderers, the bigger, the better. It started with a cat named Chairman Mao on the third floor. Then Pol Pot on the ground floor. Then I named my new cat Otto von Bismarck. Then a roomie adopted Oppenheimer. Next came Stalin The Cat on the ground floor.
Nobody had the guts to name a cat Hitler, however. I think if a new feline were added, we had Ghengis Khan The Cat as the next name slated.

It's a friend's workshop and I'm not responsible for his interior decoration. :sweatdrop: IIRC, though, that was a wrapper -for some reason- standing wrapped on the pillow. :inquisitive:
He's not Şükriye (the gracious female; for male it would be Şükrü. From Arabic شكرية - shukriyyë and شكري - shukrī respectively) but her son Duman (cloud, mist; another Arabic loanword).

Have you guys got a recommendation for a good amateur camera, which can be easily transported (parties, clubs, bars, concerts, travel etc), has excellent image quality, great lens, PC/laptop interface for dummies, and any other good features that I haven't though of and you can think of ? You want a small camera (dimensions) so you can easily take it with you in your pocket or do you care more about the quality and options?
If you want the latter I've heard good stories about the Nikon D40x. It's available with a 18-55 lens for €566,-
If you want the first...
http://www.dpreview.com you can easily compare camera's there.
But I'd just go to the shop and get some advice there (if the salesmen know their stuff).
Well I've found that portability and quality aren't so mutually compatible as it seems.

http://www.dpreview.com you can easily compare camera's there.
Very interesting website, Mith - thanks :2thumbsup:
Do you know a similar website for lenses?
@Sinan
Generally I would follow Mith's advice and go to a good shop for advice after you decided for yourself what are the most important characteristics that you are looking for (e.g., should the camera be very small so that it fits in every pocket? Should the batteries last very long? Should it be flexible and able to produce good quality pictures in situations where you do not have a lot of light available?)
Most likely you will have to compromise along the different dimensions that will play a role in your decision.
If you are looking in the compact camera class you should be able to get a very decent one (i.e. good quality of lens and sensor) with a budget of 500 EUR.
Important point (at least IMHO) - when buying a compact camera, don't put too much emphasis on pixels; a 7 million pixel camera with a high-quality lens and sensor will in most situations provide you with better pictures than a camera with 10 million pixels and more that might emphasize resolution at the expense of actual quality.
@Greg: very atmospheric picture :yes:
The light effects on the right side are marvelous - did you use a tele on a tripod?

@Ser: tripod with a 18-55mm lens shot about 6-12 inches (15-30cm) from the branch. The focus could have been a little sharper, but I still liked the effect.
@Sinan: Two other considerations for a compact camera:
1) look for one that takes standard batteries (AA or AAA here in the US). This is for convenience and cost savings measure.
2) look for a camera that has a view finder. Shooting from the LCD is nice, but there are times when putting the camera up to your eye to shoot a picture works better. I (at least) have better accuracy aiming and shooting a moving object with the camera up to my eye than by looking at the screen held in front of my face. The other time a viewfinder comes in handy is in bright sunlight. The LCD screen become very hard to see in such conditions.
In addition to DPreview.com mentioned by Mith, Steve's Digicams (http://www.steves-digicams.com/default.htm) is another site I like.

Outstanding capture, Viking.
The "rays" man, it's all about the rays. :) You told some about the weather and geography... I'd be interested also in the story of how you caught that moment - what you were doing, what you were thinking. Did the rays come as a surprise? Or did you anticipate them? Did you 'point and shoot' or compose your shot?
I return the thread to photographers and photo-enhancers who know what they're doing.

I was sitting on the passenger ferry when I saw the mountains from a new angle. I thought the scenery was nice and saw a golden opportunity to get a nice mountain shot. ~:)

I have at last discovered the means of showing photos of my greatest companions!
The first, perhaps six months old, is however recent enough to reveal the beauty and nobility in soul and countenance of my Egyptian brother, Impact, who is now twelve years and accompanies me on every ride that does not involve me in training.
The second, more recent, three months old, is of myself and my nephew Jaxon, upon a small Irish Connemara who I broke in weeks prior to that photo, and who is now in training also.
He can be pitiful to look upon, yet he is a rather late bloomer, who is at the age of three and a half in this shot.

Impact and the Irish are my two smallest horses, the latter has matured and grown since, however he is still rather similar to a rugged steppe horse in size, hardiness and features.. You must understand also, that is his winter coat which graces his hide, and has since perished.. Thankfully.
Impact is a very neat 14.2 hh, and is not so much my most disciplined and soldiered horse as my most faithful and elegant.
However, as for myself, I am six foot tall at sixteen.
The dog, Cash, has since lost his residence with me, due to the punishment enraged upon him by my mother, when he persisted in the attempt to murder Kangaroos. You could say, 'This can only happen in Australia'.
Though I was in anticipation of comment on Impact's beauty, not that brick of a labrador!
(I know he is stately, however he was well known for sprinting into the towbar of vehicles, his neck twisting sharply and his head sounding off like a gong, and yet neither noticing nor slowing as a result).

No offense intended. I confess ignorance about horses, but have some experience with dogs, so spoke to what I knew.
edit to add: I consulted a horse-person, who pronounced Impact a "beautiful beast, obviously well-cared-for, and quite photogenic."
Wut a fellow horseman? Excellent :2thumbsup:

Yes, Fragonio, we once talked about horse archery briefly, and you explained how you had attempted a, "Parthian Shot".
I am in luck! The very horse I love to use as my pseudo-hunnic steed is pictured, under impact - the Irish you see there.
He is small and hardy and very well disciplined, I learnt to throw the javelin from him and use the bow.
I was not offended Kukri! And I agree with your comment on Cash, as well as those conveyed upon Impact, for although his want of courage dissuades him from being a beast, he is certainly marvellous in composure.
I'm glad I could share these two.
The only thing that ever catapulted from my horse was yours truly you must be mistaken me with someone who could actually do such a thing. Had an english full blooded racing horse who sadly for me had a sense of humor, had to stop matches because he made it very clear he didn't apreciate it. That would mean me being thrown of the minute I entered the whatsitcalled, or he would just lay down and wouldn't get up I was quite the legend. Horse was like a dog, always following me friendly as could be but when I tried to sit on it it was war. Sadly I had to be put down, legs got screwed up.
