Yesterday I looked out of my back window and I found the sky looked pretty interesting, I lef the pictures almost untouched, just auto-corrected the colours because they were a bit off, then someone had the idea to post them here, so if you like them, do with them what you want, they're a bit big in size so I'll just post the links:

What's the cylindrical structure (in the fourth photo)? Chimney?
Yes, it's an old chimney.
and to explain a bit more I made them because of the kind of bloom effect on the clouds and partly the houses, the last one because I thought that old chimney on the side would look nice only against the clouds, my dad would have edited out the houses at the bottom and perhaps the tree but personally I like to keep it as is and I had no tripod or bipod or anything and the picture I made trying to stabilize the camera is not shown as it was the worst. :laugh4:

Wow, Decker, count me in. You snap the left back position, I'm gonna be playing at the opposite byline.
And I thought the "nice car = chix" equation was a Western invention.

Nice. I love playing defense, especially pissing off the opponents forwards. So fun.
And ahhh well that's a bit of a myth sometimes. I've always wanted a mustang. And if a girl showed interest in me because of my car I'd show her my tail lights as I drove away :whip:

Oh really!? That's pretty cool!
And I'm attending a junior college(JC) atm. The athletes are only allowed to play 2 years for only one sport and I already played my two years here. I'm not sure how it translates to a 4 year after transfering but I don't think I'll play when I do. It soaks up tooooo much time for me. Though I love the sport.
What position do you play? I've played every position of which my least favorite was/is center midfield. SOOOOO confusing lol.

Sounds good - should we also post pictures from our "archive" if anything fits or is the intention rather to go out and shoot something "new"?
I think it's generally nice to try the latter - personally I just do not always know if I will be able to do so time-wise. It would probably be good to at least indicate whether it is an "old" picture or a "new" one.
Mithrandir
09-18-2008, 11:22
Yes, I prefer the latter as well, it could be a stimulant to go out and take pictures and look at things in different ways and be more creative. If however you definately have no time, or a definate must-see, it's welcome too :)

I finally remembered to setup for my shot at this motion exercise: camera on tripod inside my van at night. Specifics: ISO 1600, shutter speed 1 second, f/10, 18-55mm zoom lens at 18mm. I took about 30 shots, here are the best two:

What's your gear Viking? Loads'a pixels on your camera I guess?
good exposure and nice scene R`as :)
Fantastic pics Greg, did you use a remote control for your camera? It's very...very shake free. 1 sec is a long time for a moving camera (even your speedometer(?)) is sharp. I like the first one best by the way.
Nice idea Greg to mention the image specs. (aperature, shutterspeed, iso). -these can be found under file properties, advanced, exif data.
What's your gear Viking? Loads'a pixels on your camera I guess?
It's a Canon PowerShot SX100 IS and got 8 mega pixels. Not sure how that compares to today's standards.

Thanks Mith. I used a wired remote. I have a wireless remote but it was not working that night. Its battery is going or I goofed on setting the camera to recognize it. As for shake free, I think it is a matter of low light higher-f/stop in that the exposure just doesn't pick up the small shakes. If you noitice, the light streaks aren't stright but a little wavy. The brighter source showing the shake more than the dimmer console lights. The situation worked to my advantage. I was pleasantly surprised at the results seeing I guessed at the setting and the tripod tipped making a turn before both these shots. Fortunately my son caught the tripod and then eyeballed the aim...perfectly. Attaboy! ~:pat:

Probably the battery, somehow those things run out very quickly, it may be an idea to take it out of the remote when you don't use it.
Again, very nice pictures.

Treated myself a few weeks ago to a rather nice FujiFilm camera, 12 megapixels, 12x optical zoom, some other features I'm sure are handy as well. Cost me $180, ordinarily was selling for 300, at least where I was shopping.
Anyways, here's some pics from campus:

Hmmm, tough theme there Decker, at least for me. I'm not much of a people type photographer, but why not?
Back to the transportation theme, the wife and I headed through Pennsylvania Amish country on the way to visit family. In a rare treat, Mrs. Gregoshi drove, so I was free to snap some pictures on the way. I've been dragging my feet on these pictures because I'm not thrilled with the result. I like the subject, but the clarity is lacking - the hazards of being in a moving car and an unsteady ride.
Amish (or Mennonite?) teenagers getting around:
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/Amishbikes.jpg
Old world meets new world: a buggy in Lancaster County PA:
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/Amishbuggy.jpg
From some research I did as I posted these pictures, the buggy pictured is probably a Mennonite buggy. In Lancaster County, Mennonite buggies are usually all black, while Amish buggies are gray. A picture I hope to get one day is along this very road on a Sunday around noon when church lets out. There will be a line of a dozen or so (Amish) buggies along the road heading home from church. It is a rather amazing sight.
The tricky part is that the Amish have a strong religious aversion to being photographed base on the 2nd Commandment (the graven images one). From what reading I've done, as long as the individual is not identifiable, the photographer can feel okay, though the Amish still might not appreciate it. To that end, I blurred the faces of the teenagers on the bikes to render them unidentifiable (hopefully).

Decker, you snuk in another post while I was composing mine. Nice shots. I especially like the first one at the mall. The on-the-ground perspective is very cool and the contrast of the focused leg and the blurred leg of the passerby is excellent. :2thumbsup:
Yeah I kinda thought so myself. But there's a whole month and a half :) Plus... it's be good practice as HOPEFULLY people won't be tooooo scared by the economic problems for a good time out :2thumbsup:
And yeah thanks! I was surprised myself when I finally loaded it up. Interesting comments on the Amish and Mennonites. Never knew that, cool stuff though Gregoshi.
Those Amish(es) look so funny in their "ye olde" clothes, in an out of place sort of way.

I gave up on the "joy" theme. Just did get anything that said "joy" to me.
I haven't bugged you guys with any School of Rock pictures for a while. At last weekend's Genesis (Peter Gabriel version) show I had a chance to play with my new toy - a 50mm f/1.8 lens. Oh the fastness of that lens allowed me to hit shutter speeds (1/400 sec) I'd only dreamed about in the low light of the shows. Anyway, here's one of the favourite shots I've taken in the four years I've been shooting the shows.

Great shot Greg (colors and facial expression) - funny thing is, when I saw the pic - even before reading your post - I immediately thought of Peter Gabriel.
Peter dressing up as a flower must have made a lasting impression on me :laugh4:
Is that a Nikon 50mm that you are using? I am currently thinking about which lenses with fixed focal length to buy.
In the past I was pretty much only working with zooms - but since I bought a 150mm macro from Sigma over a year ago I am using that one so much my "default" tele (due to the amating quality and the fastness) that I feel tempted to add one or two more lenses in the 35 - 85 mmm range.
Gregoshi
01-17-2009, 17:35
Is that a Nikon 50mm that you are using?
Yes, it is a Nikon. They also have a f/1.4 version. It was a bit awkward at first not being able to zoom, but I got over it and I like the results so far. I have to get a lens hood for it though as I have accidentally fingerprinted the filter two of the three times I've used it so far.
I hadn't been familiar with the Peter Gabriel Genesis prior to the show. I thought I would have recognized a few of the songs, but no. After hearing the song pictured (weird phrasing, that) I went home and watch the video of "Supper's Ready" and realized what a great job they did on the song with costume and gesturing. A very theatrical performer was Mr. Gabriel.

I just got pictures from a rugby tournament in the area, the Atlantic Coast Invitational. For Florida, it was cold, but extremely enjoyable. The pictures that I did take were pretty basic, mostly just set-pieces. My 8-MG camera doesn't do action shots too well, I just had to play it by ear and instinct.
Some are Florida State, Wake Forest, UNC, NC State, Georgia Tech, or Boston College.

Nice to see this thread is still going :).
The 50 mm lens is nice Greg, great bang-a-buck value. I've bought it a while back mainly because of the shallow depth of field for stills and posed portraits.
What filter do you have on it though? the glass is quite deep in the lens, so I wouldn't worry too much with protection filters (besides, the filter is half the price of the lens)...

Hey! You've been gone so long I was beginning to wonder if you were just a Mith...that was bad, I know. The filter is just a UV one. I know the 50mm lens is pretty far recessed but I feel naked without a filter. How about throwing us a picture for old times sake?

Thanks Gregoshi. Glad you like them. The waterfall's look is due to the strong contrast between the water catching up a lot of light and the rock lying in shade.
I'll try to post some LotR like pics but I've to say that we didn't travel with the aim to find the movie locations. Lots of people do that. We found a lot of the "must see" tourist spots to be overrated and sometimes overrun. If you travel around by car you can discover so many beautiful spots that's it's hardly necessary to go anywhere specific, especially on the South Island. I know, sounds unbelievable but it's true. :beam:

No, I'm sorry. Must be the perspective that makes it look that way.
That's ordinary Genista (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genista). Quite a pest in NZ, threatening endemic plants. Here (http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Luxor,_Banana_Island,_Banana_Tree,_Egypt,_Oct_2004.jpg)'s a wikipedia picture of a banana tree. Although not endemic to NZ, bananas grow there just fine, along with oranges, lemons, avocados, etc. All of them even in winter.
We stayed at a place in NZ in 2003 where we got fresh oranges from the tree for breakfast. They also had a banana tree but had the bananas themselves covered in a cloth or plastic to protect the fruits from the birds.

Looks like Whangarei Falls.
Yes, it is Whangarei Falls. Nice laid-back town.
When we're on the South Island we went whale watching in Kaikoura.
Kaikoura is one of the few spots on the world where the deep sea is very close ( 5 mins by boat) to the coast.
That's ideal for whale watching. Whale watching is basically waiting for the whales to surface to catch a breath, which they need every 40mins or so.
When they surface, you can see part of the back and head, nothing else.
The whole animal is larger and heavier than a Boeing 707 but you can see only about 5-10% of them.
When they dive again, the tail comes up and that's what everyone is waiting for.
In the end I was more amused by the Dolphins and more awed by the Albatross we saw,
but it was a thing worth experiencing in any case.
Here goes:

The guide told us, that Dolphins usually make several times the same trick in a row and to watch out for it to get good shots. That was a very useful information for a guy with a 35 year old manual focus camera and no winder. :beam:
It worked well, watch for one of them jumping and wait for him to emerge again a few meters further. 1/250 sec and f11 made sure it's acceptably sharp.

Nice work. Thanks for the shot stats. Your camera sounds like my film SLR. Sadly, it sits in the closet since I went digital. :shame:
I have a Pentax K1000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentax_K1000) SLR, first built 1976, so 35 years was slightly exaggerated. I bought it about 10 years ago to learn all about the basics with a full manual camera that has an inbuilt meter. The body only has an ISO dial, a speed dial and the frame counter, nothing else. It's absolutely minimalistic. The Pentax SMC-M lenses, though are top class. I have got the following primes: 50/1.4, the 135/2.5, the 200/4 and the 28/2.8. All great and fast lenses. Especially the 50/1.4 is rated one of the best of its time and class.
I have a secondary body as a backup, which is a Cosina ct9 (http://www.butkus.org/chinon/cosina/cosina_ct9/cosina_ct9.htm). Same lens mount, self-timer and auto-exposure and a different focussing screen. Although the Cosina seems to offer more comfort with the auto exposure system I can handle the simpler K1000 better. It has a micro prism instead of a split screen indicator and it gives me feedback on my exposure value just as good.
We did also bring a Canon Powershit A400 for cheap digital images. I absolutely hate that thing. I did take some good pictures with it and my wife can handle the thing quite good but it took me ages to figure out how to force the thing to agree to my orders. You can compensate for some errors of the beast with the inbuilt exposure compensation and the spot meter but it's a pain. I always wanted to test if I can get fast times in low light by activating the flash but taping it over with black tape....
My main grudge is the huge depth of field that these compact lenses have. Isolating parts of the picture with selective depth of field is almost impossible. It worked well for the panorama shot, though. It's stitched together from about a dozen images.
What kind of film SLR do you have and what do you use now?

To answer your question R'as, my 35mm SLR is a Fujica I got as a present (I think) around 1975. I have a 55mm lens and a 300mm telephoto. I really should dust it off (figuratively) and use it on occasion. My current camera is a Nikon D80. I love it but have two annoyances with it. One is "hot spots" on the sensor which really show up on the dark concert shots I do. I have to clone them out one by one. I must call Nikon about this to see what they can do for me as removing them is a real pain. The other annoyance is the manual focus mechanism. I loved the "split ring" focus of my Fujica. For the D80 I either have to eyeball it or watch for an in-focus dot to light up in the view finder. For manual focus, I lack confidence in this dot even though autofocus uses the same methodology and I'm fine with that. Go figure.
Back to your pictures, did you use a tripod on any of the shots? I ask because the one beach photo with the surfer, the surfer is showing motion yet the scenery around is steady sharp.

Ah, also one of those solid and simple ones. The 300mm is nice to have, too.
Maybe try it again with some high speed film at the gigs? Btw I always have problems with the "split ring" in low light, I just can't see it.
So, when focusing manually with a D80 there's no other indication for in-focus than a light? I don't have that much experience with digital slrs but I thought there was more convenience involved? But then I guess it's because they expect you to use autofocus anyway....
I always read that manual focus on digital slrs is more accurate than autofocus in a lot of situations. For example it's said, that when shooting portraits the autofocus will focus on the nose, which is the closest object, instead of the eyes which would be more ideal.
Back to your pictures, did you use a tripod on any of the shots? I ask because the one beach photo with the surfer, the surfer is showing motion yet the scenery around is steady sharp.

We already had that much luggage, that I didn't want to bring a tripod. In hindsight, it would've been good to buy a cheap one there and give it away before returning.... I bought a five dollar table tripod which has bendable legs and I used that to make the running water shots I showed earlier. It was difficult to buy anything other than 200 ISO film, so that's what I used most of the time. Problem is that in bright sunshine it's hard to get limited depth of field. On the Abel Tasman walk, for example, the sun was perfectly "sunny 16" bright, meaning with a 200 film you can shoot f16 at 1/250sec. 1/1000 is the fastest the k1000 can shoot and that leaves you with f8 as lowest f-stop. But on the other hand, we were doing a bushwalk and in the bush it was quite shady and I often could only shoot with 1/60 and f4 or lower. The point is that the film wasn't that bad, just a bit too fast sometimes.
Anyway, the beach shot was at 200 Iso, too and either handhold with 1/60sec or I used a handrail/ treestump or sth. I don't remember, sorry. But I will use whatever I have to steady the camera when I don't have a tripod.
 I'll show some more.

Combo breaker! Just a shiny picture of a guitar, nothing fancy here.

Image is flipped to the left and resized, nothing else. The guitar is a Gibson ES-137, a semi-hollowbody with a mahogany center block and laminated (curly) maple top, back, and sides. It was my second guitar and my first "real" guitar. Still my favorite, though I play a beater Strat clone most of the time, to avoid scratching up my baby.

I'll post some wedding pics as soon as I find some where I didn't look angry or terrified.

The age difference is a problem sometimes, but I think I can get over it. She's a 24 year old Korean/Jew gamer nerd. Her mom is a loud, overbearing Korean woman and her dad is a rich Jewish cowboy from Texas. I am a 34 year old educated, pessimistic, gun-crazy Oklahoma white trash boy who likes to change careers every 4 or 5 years. The world has a funny way of working sometimes.

I actually didn't notice the age difference at all. You both look mid 20s to me...

In addition to being a chef and an oil painter, Mrs. Lemur is a semi-pro cyclist. I am profoundly intimidated by her legs. Look at these things! I've never had calves like that in my life!
