for those not familiar with his work, dimeolas, one of the members here, is quite the artist. with his permission, i've cropped one of his pieces and added a bit myself. the building, lake and background are all his. i added the geisha on the deck.

if you wish to see more of his work, without my 'hacks' added, go to http://dimeolas.com . he really does nice stuff

just got a copy of photoshop cs, trial version, and i must say, this thing is impressive. i still like some of the features of paint shop pro, but this p-shop is just levels above.

here's a simple example of something i just couldnt have done in psp.

the original............................................................................the hack
http://mizus.com/kraellin/393.jpg http://mizus.com/kraellin/393-1-k-1a.jpg

the degrade of image quality was due to something else...i think. so disregard that part.

amazing tools in this thing and i havent even scrtched the surface of what's possible.

edit: ok. found what was wrong with that last image quality and changed it. this shld be better now.

go to your desktop, right click on it. go to active desktop. you will see a number of items such as customize my desktop. go down, find the one that is that picture (new9.jpg i believe) then click on it, and there you have it, all gone. http://www.totalwar.org/forum/non-cgi/emoticons/gc-book2.gif

In the Watch Tower there has been some discussion of posting family pictures and websites. So here is a thread where you can show off your cute kids, pretty wives/girlfriends, handsom husbands/boyfriends, and the sort.

http://www.geocities.com/lilpepl2/

My wife does our website. There are some links on their for the Bobby and the dogs so feel free to have a look around. Also feel free to sign the old guess book. I would really like to see some pictures of you guys. Its always good to have a face if the person your talking to, or yelling at!!! ~:joker:

A day in my life.

Cutting them down is the fun part.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/horsesass/church2small.jpg

Cleaning them up is something else.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/horsesass/churchsmall.jpg

I'm the shmoo feeding the chipper. The tree was about 80' and about five feet from a very small Methodist church in my small town.

I can climb, but my partner in the tree has years more experience and this one was a wee bit hairy.

I'm curious if anyone spots the incongruity in the pictures. :inquisitive:

Divine Wind
09-15-2004, 23:52
Nice pics. Is it that in the first pic there doesn't seem to be many branches or leaves (are they leaves?) mainly just tree trunk, while in the second you've got lots of tree to put in the chipper?

Beirut
09-16-2004, 00:37
That's pretty close. What it is... is that we're cutting a coniferous (needles)tree yet we're chipping deciduous (leaves) branches.

No really it's quite interes...

We cut down the big cherry tree that's behing the spruce in the picture. The branches are from that tree.

The way you cut a tree like the one in the picture is you cut all the branches on the way up, that's why it looks like a trunk, then top the tree at the highest safe point, another six or eight feet from where he is, and then drop the trunk in sections big/small enough to control and aim. We did the job in a cemetary and had to be VERY careful about breaking tombstones. People get upset when you do that.

Good fun though. Have to go finish up tomorrow.

i think that long hair is as "in" as playing pc games and talking on an internet forum about wargames

and today there really is no "style" to speak of as "in" but many that are seen as cool

the rock look is now varied and cool
the intellectual look is seen as intruiging
the metrosexual look is timeless mixed with hip
the hipster look is an amalgam of 50's60's70's80'sand90's pop culture
the down to earth look is respected

etc

i work at club monaco and i havnt seen an identifiable popular look really - long hair is just as cool as short hair and the inbetweens are just as cool as the fringe new look

Sorry my friend. I just recently lost my dog. I got her from the pound several years ago. She was a great dog.

There are several reasons why your dog could be retaining fluids. If you use certain chemicals to clean your house with, dogs tend to be very sensitive to many household cleaning products. If your dog drinks from the toilet (gross, I know, but some people let them do it" that has one of those blue cleaning solutions that automatically turn on after your toilet flushes can cause serious problems. Diet can be another factor. Although I don't know of many dogs that have retained fluids from their diets, sometimes dogs grow allergic to beef based dog foods. Lamb and rice compounds tend to be healthier for dogs, also chicken based. Sounds like a very sad situation. Just try to keep her happy, comfortable, and loved. If, God forbid, she has to be put down, remember it is to end her suffering. But before you do that, ALWAYS get a second opinion. Vetrinarian medicine is a very varied field and you'd be suprised at how some vets are very knowledgable, while many other wouldn't know how to put a thermometer in a dog's butt right. I'm really sorry that you are going through this, it reall is heart-wrenching to go through.

Devastatin Dave
09-20-2004, 12:16
Oh, and one more thing... NO TABLE SCRAPS!!! There are many many spices and food additives that are deadly to dogs. Chocolate can kill a dog. I'm going to call my vet and see if he has some ideas. He's pretty good about identifying disease traits and ailments.

Monkian, i talked to my Vet today and he says that your dog has the classic symptoms of kidney problems. He said to fond a vet in your area that has extensive knowledge of that issue because it can become fatal in a very short period of time. He also said that if you are feeding your dog a high amount of sodium (in her dog food) to try to find a low sodium diet dog food. But he said to definitly find a doctor that will treat the problem, not the symptoms.

Here's one for you Gregoshi..

This is the main road through the village of Eardisly, just across the border in Herefordshire, England. The little houses were originally a long hall and the structures of these old buildings date back to the 13th and 16th Centuries.

A Standing Stone.....Middle of nowhere....Bannau Brycheiniog ( Brecon Beacons )....Powys, Mid Wales. The odd thing is, when you look around, there is no other stone of this type to be seen. To me it looks like it could be part of a meteorite. When I took the family there my wife agreed with me ~
It's such a shame that some clown chose to deface it, though time and the elements ( very harsh environment, the S.A.S train here ) have almost removed it. There is a sister stone to this one nearer the Black Mountain range which is north of Swansea.

For more pics of views of Wales, visit the Takiyama site, I've posted a few there in the general forum

Excellent choise on the beer. (why is that can so huge?)

It is a 1L can which I can get from the supermarket down the road. The Taiwanese do use bottles but large cans for groups are also used... Wasabi likes Heineken, I prefer Boags and Cascade more but they are a bit rare over here.

The 7-11s have a good range of beer as well.

That can is photoshopped, it has to be. It doesn't look right in your hand or going up to your mouth.

Hi Orda,

I dont think its a metor, it looks like an erratic, which is a large piece of rock which would have been broken free by glacial erosion in the last ice age and then transported potentally 100's of miles by the glacial 'flow' then as the ice retreated, the broken rock fragments are left behind. of corse i could be wrong as i would need to look at it in detail to be sure...

The truth is they don't type dairy well. After all, who heffer herd of a typing cow? They hoof to use utter means becud they don't have fingers. So they dictate to chickens...who type using the "hen(t) and peck" method. Since chickens are rather dumb, the result is more cluck than anything and certainly nothing to crow about considering the negative feed bag they get from their editors. BTW, this type of cooperation is known as a symbiotic relationship. However, the hens usually have a real beef with the chicken feed they get as pay even though it is the cow's hide at steak.

Also, I figure that Capo must be too stunned to even respond.

That's one beautiful Apulian red-figure volute kratèr (a kratèr was like a big festive bowl to mix wine and water in). I knew Boston had some, but it's great to see it online. Does this have anything to do with you, a study or hobby or something? Who's the silly youth blocking the view of the marble base reliefs? ~

EDIT
I've looked it up, it's the Death of Thersites vase and the panel on side towards us depicts a youth with a horse standing near the funerary shrine or naiskos. What a beaut.

This thread looks like it needs a shot in the arm.

The setup: I got my first digital camera for Christmas. My first major "project" with the camera has been taking pictures at local Rock (and Roll) shows. My daughter joined the local branch of the "Paul Green School of Rock Music". This school, which some theorize was the inspiration of the School of Rock movie, not only teaches kids (8-18 years old) how to play guitar, bass, keyboards, drums, etc. they are taught with the goal of putting on a rock concert for a paying crowd. Each show has a theme (Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc) and about 40-50 kids perform about 25 songs, so there are kids coming and going on stage after each number. The shows are not like your typical piano recital - the shows feature coloured spotlights and a fog machine. These kids are talented beyond belief and the school provides a venue for them to perform for an audience - an opportunity few kids ever have. I know without the school, my daughter would have never been able to do this.

Anyway, enough talk about the school. I've posted nearly 40 pictures on a quickie website I put up. The thing I'm most pleased about the pictures is that they give you a feel for what the concerts are like visually - which can be stunning with the lights and fog.

I'll give the URL for all the pictures, but I post two teaser pictures here:

https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/Bestof2005Feb12_22.JPG

https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/LZ2005Jan08_35.JPG

As you may note, if you have a dialup connection, these images will take some 15+ seconds to load and they are rather large if your display settings are below 1024x768. Sorry about that. Chopping the pictures down smaller in dimension and file size took some of the impact and clarity out of the images.

To see all the images, click on the link: https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the pictures of kids putting on a Rock 'n' Roll show!

I have hundreds of slides/negatives, all developed, and I do have a scanner doing the job (actually I have two), but the slide/negative capable one has the worst possible software ever to be written, which doesn't really motivate me.

One of these days, I'll bite the bullet and scan them though. You will sure notice that day! ~;)

as some of you may know, i've been doing some re-mastering work with photos. i may even start a business with it. so, along those lines, i bought a new toy. i already have a scanner and a good printer, but i couldnt scan photo negatives. a normal scanner just wont do it. so, i bought a negative scanner.

this thing is a bit tricky and it took a while to get any sort of decent result. the negative i scanned is also quite old, maybe 35 to 40 years or so and it was quite dusty and scratchy. it took hours to get the scanned image near enough to correct and then a few more hours to clean all the dust and scratches out digitally. this is a photo i took all those years ago and resulting scanned and cleaned up result. it's not exactly as i remember the original, but it's close enough for a first attempt:

Krae, can you show us a "before" (i.e., the initial scan) of that picture? I'm just curious to see what an expert can do with software. I've messed a little bit with PaintShopPro, but I've not even scratched the surface of its capabilities.

BTW, is the negative scanner a dedicated negative scanner, or a scanner with an attachment? My dad has been talking of getting something to his negatives, so any feedback you have would be welcome.

greg,

it's a dedicated, stand-alone, usb, slide/negative scanner. you can get them as part of a normal scanner (i think as an attachment of sorts), but i already have a normal scanner. i ordered it through Staples, $129.

this is the first attempt at this negative:

http://mizus.com/kraellin/scan1001-01a.bmp this is a bit misrepresented, however. it's not the scan i actually used to get the final result, for color reasons. you can see the scratches and dust marks, however. i also had to resize it quite a bit smaller (40% of original), and change it to .bmp. the original came out in .tif, which paint shop pro can handle.

and yes, that's what i used for editing after the save, psp.

there is also software that comes with the scanner which allows you to preview and change how the scan will come out. this is a sort of film type adjustment pre-step to the editing in psp. i do a pre-scan, which loads the scan up in the scanner software and then adjust the look using that. i then take another scan to save to file and that's how it will look when i call it up in psp. so, this shot i'm posting is the first attempt at saving the pre-setup.

this negative scanner is quite a bit more involved than a normal scanner. gettting the negative image over to a positive image that looks like a real photo is the trick. when i did this first blusih picture and loaded it up into psp, i thought i'd just be able to do a reverse image from negative to positive, but it looked horrible color wise. i then did a few others but with adjusting the colors in the pre-scan and that's how i ended up with something i could work with in psp. i then adjusted color and contrast and so on a bit in psp and edited out the streaks and dust dots to get the final image. it's not how the original actually looked, the original photograph. i still had trouble with the color adjustments (i'm missing some greens) and i'll be spending some time learning and tweaking on this thing some more.

all in all, i'm generally pleased, but i was hoping for a bit better first results without all this color adjustment and tweaking. so, if you go this route, try to get a demo in the store first. i bought this blind, with no demo or working model in the store to actually look at and play with. this is also the low-end model of this company. they have at least two more. i'll also be looking at their web site to see if they have got some updates or other editing software.

i shld also mention that i had trouble getting this thing going. it was made in taiwan and the 'manual', such as it is, was a bit spartan. there is also a problem with some computers not being able to run with two scanners on the same machine and i had to disconnect one of my printers and my flatbed scanner to get this thing to work. after doing that, however, it worked fine.

the brand name is 'prime film 1800u and the company is pacificimage electronics. their web page is www.scanace.com .

i'll prolly be posting some more of these as i do more, hopefully closer to the original photograph's specs :)

Thanks for the abundant (as always) info Krae.

Funny that a "negative" isn't a negative as far as software is concerned. What you are going through is my problem with digital editing. You can do lots of stuff, but unless the image is a special one to you, is it worth spending hours tweaking it? Maybe it goes a lot quicker when you get familiar with the software and techniques. Nice job on that negative BTW, but I can see where you have some more work to do yet. Good luck with it.

Kraellin
02-20-2005, 18:23
well, i'm beginning to think that something may be wrong with the software used in the scanner. i can set the pre-scan to give me a very close to the original type image, but when i scan it to save it, i get something quite different. in fact, it's quite close (the saved file) to the one i posted above, the bluish one.

so, after i got the pre-scan setup how i wanted it, i simply did a print screen of it and saved it in psp. i then cleaned it up with psp and this is how it looks:

http://mizus.com/kraellin/rose-3-k-1a.bmp

so, i'm not quite sure what's going on yet. it could be me and something i dont understand yet, or it could be the scanner software... not sure. it's a bit weird to me yet. i'll prolly have to send some stuff to the manufacturer or update drivers or software or something. but as maxwell smart used to say, 'missed it by that much.'. :)

thanks greg :)

yeah, i read a readme that came with this stuff that talks about two methods for fixing a scan when the pre-scan and scan to file dont match up, but i cant find some of the things they're referencing.

i also found a new driver, which i've downloaded, but not installed yet. been working on this all morning, so i'll fool with the driver update later. gonna take a break now :)

ok, i'm getting the hang of this now. seems that there are 3 parts of software that came with this thing. i was only using one. i could still prolly get away with using just the one, but i'd have to adjust some settings in psp to do it and not quite sure what those are. they list what you have to change in photoshop for this, but not psp and psp doesnt translate out the same way, i think. at any rate, i've got the pre-scan and the scan matching up now.

so, here's the next set, before and after editing:

thanks, ah dut :)

hmmm, they're not loading. mizus may be down. i've also had trouble before with these img things getting erased, so dunno.

well, it turns out that the apoth guy (me) did any number of things wrong when setting up the new negative scanner. i plead innocent (mostly) based on the taiwanese translation ;) first, it turns out this thing wont work with another scanner hooked up on the usb. yup, so had to take my flatbed off. but, i'd already installed the software and apparently that screwed things up the first time. thinking it was something else, i got the updated drivers from offline. again, this got screwed up beause i didnt understand something and i put the old drivers back on. lol. this went on for a few days like this. finally, after reading and reading the readmes, the manual, the online faq, and the online driver installation, i got the new drivers installed correctly and all seems fine now :)

in fact, i've been going through quite a few of my old negatives. this thing is quite interesting (now that it's giving the correct results). you load the software, then the negative, then do a 'prescan', which shows you the pic in their software in a positive image. you can then edit that prescan and do a final scan to get the actual result. the result comes out as a file in your choice of locations, or you can use their software to capture it for further editing. since i'm using psp, i just capture it as a file i use in psp.

the prescan and prescan edit are quite handy. you've quite a few options to change the original scan and get a better one. there is color alteration in several methods, brigthness and contrast control, flipping, rotating, and mirroring, and a number of other features. this makes it quite easy to do one prescan, edit it, scan it to a file, revert all your settings back, edit it again for another look and do another scan as another file. thus, you can get any number of final looks to a pic off the same prescan. i did this to one picture in particular and i'll prolly post those results after i've done some more editing.

on the final result file, i load it into psp and usually do a couple of minor automated processes, then start edting by hand. i could do more automated stuff in psp, but the overall quality of the pic suffers often by the automation processes, especially if you're doing a lot of them. so, i minimize those.

i'm having a ball with this thing. pictures i took 35 years ago are coming out remarkably better than i'd hoped. they are a bit faded and dusty, but with the software i've got, i can restore them fairly well. and, in some cases, even get them better than the originals. add in the prescan edit capabilities for changing the look of the originals and i'm now glad i bought this (whereas a couple of days ago i wasnt so sure :)

(Note our 1966 suicide crane in the backround.)

Why is it called a Suicide crane?!

Beirut
03-16-2005, 00:29
It's a 1966 Lorain with a 20 ton capacity. More or less. And there's not one hydraulic anything on it. It's all cables and friction.

You pull (and I mean pull) a big lever back to lift the load. When it gets to the height you want, you have to hit a foot locking brake at the same time as you release the lifting lever. If you're off by a split second, three tons of log drops from a few inches to about two feet in the lapse before it locks up and the whole bloody crane shakes with you in it and the guys guiding the log into place threaten you with imminent and painful death if you do it again. And that's just lifting it.

When it's at height, you can swing it around, and lower the boom, which shakes the **** out of the crane and you again, and then you lower the load by unlocking the foot brake and releasing the pressure with your foot (like backing off a gas pedal) very, very, very slowly. The difference between a controlled descent and a five foot per second descent is about 1/8 of an inch on the pedal pivot. ~ The guys guiding the log into place on the down part do so with extreme caution to say the least.

Also, right behind the flimsy seat are cable wheels three feet across. if you lean back the wrong way... :skull: This thing wouldn't pass today's safety restrictions even if the inspector was you brother, drunk, sleeping with your wife and owed you money.

On the hand, it works and we could afford it. And getting lifted up on the cable and swung around is a riot!

WOW! I'de love a cabin like that! What is the price for something of that size?

Hmph! So would I.

The log shell, about 30x30, white pine, hand worked and fitted, which is the walls with windows and doors cut out, floor joists for the second floor and the roof trusses and beams runs about $45,000 installed.

Finishing the house is variable. But a full basement, roof structure, interior walls, plumbing, electricity, septic tank and weeping field, well, basic (but nice) kitchen, gyprock, paint, wondows and doors, bathroom fixtures, and the thousand and one other bloody things you need to do will run another $100,000 very easily. More like $125,000 to $200,000. It's scary. But this structure is plenty of space for a family of four or five.

We're drawing up plans for more modest houses but these are the ones people want. The biggest we did was 52x30, full basement, heated granite floors, two second floor mezanines connected by a twenty foot bridge, and a staircase built with a single stringer made from a 10x 16 piece of milled pine ran about $450,000.

Our part, the log shell as described above, ran about $80,000 with some extras. The staircase was another $3000.

I'm afraid I don't have many pics as I only just got a digital camera for Christmas, and these pics were from before then, but I'm sure others will be forthcoming with time :)

You show great courage, Lord Zone, for posting pictures of your girl, an obviously charming lady, in a forum such as this, frequented by men such as ourselves.

Do not under any circumstances tell us her name or phone number unless you desire great competition for her affections.
