It's no problem, it was just an observation I made. So in Quebec, if you're first language isn't english, then I take it you speak French?

I'm in French 2 class.:2thumbsup:

Yes, the next version (Garry's Mod 10) will cost $10 over Steam (the online game distribution service). Fortunately that's about £5.60, so considering the amount of fun i've had from the current version, i can only imagine how much more fun i'll get out of the next version.

New pictures will come when i feel like making some. Or when i'm inspired.

On Sunday I took my dogs for a hike on the trails of Mount Misery in Valley Forge National Park. It was a perfect day and Spring was busting out all over. Below are a couple of pictures I took along Valley Creek:

https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/ValleyForge11.JPG

While treking on the hiking trail up on Mount Misery, there was a small, unmarked path leading to this oven (kiln?) all by itself on the hillside. I doubt it dates back to the American Revolution, but it made me wonder about its history and why it was here.

Dog pictures... I did take a couple of pictures of the dogs on the hiking trail, but didn't think them worth posting. Since Blodrast asked for a doggy picture, here it is from the trail on Mount Misery:

https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/ValleyForge2.jpg

Both dogs are cocker-poos (or cocka-poos) Jodie is the white dog on the left. She loves people and other animals, her tail is alway wagging and she'll lick you to the point of needing a towel if you let her. Harley is on the right and the younger one. He barks at EVERYTHING and at close quarters the barking has a vicious aspect to it, though he's a coward and wouldn't bit anyone. He was the runt of the litter and I think as a result developed this faux tough dog act.

They are a bit of a pain to walk with, always tugging and twisting the leashes. It is a miracle I was able to take any pictures at all.

Now to change the subject a bit, Mith, did you take those insect pictures? If so, what equipment did you use? I especially like the leafy insect picture.

They converted the old farm into a town park, in order to stave off encroaching suburbia. The views are far more magnificent than they would be w/ a bunch of houses crowded in on each other w/ bright green lawns (and no other greenery), no trees, and plain roads.

Gah! they are not Dogs Greg...only animals which can guard and/or fetch things for you classify as that ;).

As for my equipment (insert horrible pun here), I used a Nikon D50 with a 18-70 lens.Took the picture on the highest resolution and than cropped out the bug.

What ye got ?

I have a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ20 which is a DSLR wanna-be. Oh, to be able to shoot at ISO 800 or 1600 for the pictures below...

It is the Paul Green School of Rock concert season again and I have a few pictures from the first show of the season: Guitar Gods. Just a side note about the first picture: for anyone who has seen the documentary Rock School (it was on A&E about two weeks ago), the guitarist on the left with the long hair is CJ, the incredible guitarist featured in that movie. How did you manage to get them shots Greg?

Without (obvious ?) flash but a fast shutterspeed nonetheless ?

Gregoshi
05-12-2006, 17:14
I used a tripod and remote shutter release cable and shoot at ISO 400 and a shutterspeed of 1/60th second in burst mode. Focusing is difficult in the lighting and 1/60th second shutterspeed is a little too slow. Hence my comment above about longing to shoot at ISO 800 or 1600 like your D50 can. I shot over 400 pictures for each of the two shows and immediately deleted 3/4 of them due to focusing issues, goofy facial expressions, motion blur due to slow shutter speed, or lighting issues. Each of the 15-20 spotlights can go on or off every second or two so the lighting is constantly changing. This and the facial expression problem are why I shoot in burst mode. Shooting 3-4 pictures over a 2 second period of time usually over comes one problem or the other - and sometimes both!:laugh4:

Time for a break from rock concert pictures.

I dug out a few of my better/interesting astronomy based pictures and scanned them.

Below are two pictures of the same region of the sky. I don't have my notes handy but the B&W is a 10 minute exposure as I recall and the colour shot is probably 5 minutes. They were shot with a 35mm SLR using a 55mm lense piggybacked on a telescope with a clock drive to track the stars as the Earth rotates. The interesting feature aside from the multitude of stars on the B&W image, is the red nebula to the lower left of the bright star in the center. This is the North American nebula (http://www.utahskies.org/image_library/deepsky/ngc/NGC7000NorthAmericanNebula-Cygnus.jpg) which in a longer exposure and magnifide a little, looks like the US east coast and Gulf of Mexico.

https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/DenebColor.jpg https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/DenebBW.jpg

Below is one of my first astrophotos from back in 1977 - a star trail of the constellation Orion. This is a 10 minute exposure using the same rig that took the pictures above, except it was mounted on a stationary tripod. Note the poor quality of the print - dust and scratches galor!

https://home.comcast.net/~gbresslr/images/Orionstartrail.jpg

There are two things of note about this picture. First, the bright pinkish "star" trail about halfway from the center to the bottom of the picture is actually not a star but, in fact, M42 - the Great Orion Nebula (http://seds.lpl.arizona.edu/messier/large/m42.gif). It is easily visible with the naked eye as the middle "star" in Orion's sword. The pale, greenish-white nebulosity is noticable in binoculars. It shows up pink (or red) in the picture due to the film's red sensitivity.

The second item of note is the star trails themselves. The thee equally bright stars in the center are the belt of Orion. These stars sit on the celestial equator, i.e., they pass directly overhead of anyone standing on the Earth's equator. Their star trails are essentially straight lines. That is not true of the star trails north and south of them. If you closely examine the star trails at the top and bottom of the picture, you will notice they are slightly curved - curved up at the top and curved down at the bottom. This is easier to see with the trails on the left or right edge. The farther away from the equator, the more pronounced the curvature.

The last image is more interesting for what it is rather than how it looks. The bright streak in the picture below is that of the space shuttle Discovery as it flew over my area in the pre-dawn skies of May 3, 1991. It is hard to descibe the exhilarating feeling I had as I watched this bright star with a crew of astronauts on board. For the few minutes it took to traverse the sky I felt a special bond with the crew. Fly on Discovery!

Our job today. This dead as a doornail pine right in the middle of a whack of tombstones, some over 200 years old. We were asked to be... careful.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/horsesass/graveyard001.jpg

Roped down all the branches, pulled a few big pieces down and were left with just the trunk.
Every ****** piece of wood, branch, and shnoot (sawdust and scrap) has to be taken away. Gah! Takes a lot of time to load all that stuff up and dump it.
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/horsesass/graveyard007.jpg

This is the tie off we set up in another tree to pull the trunk section down. Stupid thing was leaning towards a whack of tombstones and we had to put the serious pull on it to get it into an open space. (Mind you, that's some lovely sugar maple firewood in the backround we're getting out of another of the trees we're doing there. We're taking down the rest of the maple tomorrow.)
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v298/horsesass/graveyard013.jpg

End of tree one. Another big dead pine on the other side of the graveyard tomorrow.

I'm enjoying Wisconsin very, very much. Couldn't ask for a bigger lifestyle change, which is just what we wanted.

We knew we wanted to get out of New Yawk, and we had two serious options: A friend of mine edits a literary mag in Sonoma, CA, where there's also plenty of work for literate geeks. So that was a possibility. And my wife's family is all here in Elkhorn, WI. At the end of the day, wee just couldn't resist the low, low property prices in WI, so we bought a Victorian three-story house for less than a studio apt would be in Brooklyn, and off we went. A month or two and I had a nice, geeky job, and we've still got a great deal of our dirty NY money laying about.

It has been a good move. And it will only get better -- the schools here are some of the best in the nation. Long-term investment, if you will. You do want your future World Ruler to be literate and numerate, right?

mercian billman
07-03-2006, 09:21
I can understand that, I only ask because I grew up in Minnesota and moved to Wisconsin before 8th grade. As you can see by my location I lived in the western part of the state and was only 30 minutes away from Minnesota.

Now that I live in Washington state I could definately understand why you would want to move to Wisconsin. I would rather have temperatures of -50F and 1 foot of snow than 38 (or was it 36) straight days of rain.

Nice pictures Gregoshi, though the 1st one is a bit grainy.. (high ISO to compensate for the losing of sunlight I guess?)

Gregoshi
07-07-2006, 02:32
Yeah Stormcrow, ISO 400 - the max my camera can go - was used on all these pictures. I was lazy and didn't bother trying to smooth out the graininess. At the size I shrunk the images down to, I didn't think it was that noticable. Guess I was wrong. :laugh4: The first was at dusk at about 1/8 second I believe. The fireworks proper were shot with a 1 second exposure.

I won't discuss the legality of the fireworks display here in Pennsylvania. ~;)

BTW, the waterfall in Xiahou pictures is Bushkill Falls. It is the highest waterfall in Pennsylvania, or so it is billed. It is in the Pocono Mountains near the Delaware River in the Northeast corner of the state. My wife and I visited it 22 years ago on our honeymoon.

With the World Cup and all, a Germany-themed pic would be most appropriate.

So, here's one of the most typical pics one can take in Bayern, not very easy though with all the tourists on that shaky bridge of sorts.

Let me analyse his pic for you. BKS has a long, straight and strong hair with some dark looks on a baby face.

This is what they call "handsome", a unisex way of physical appreciation.

But well all my female friends were complaining about shortening my hair after having it long for 3 years. Spicing up your face doubles/triples/quadruples your charm. And long hair under care is a quad damaging one ~D

If I someday shave my wolvish sideburns, I'll need a new trick. ~;)

Big King Sanctaphrax

I listen to some metal, but I'm not really what you'd call a metal-head. I'm a big fan of Sabbath, Iron Maiden and early BoC, and I also like a lot of the early Metallica stuff, pre-Cliff Burton's death. To be honest, the reason I grew my hair was that I wanted it to be like Scott Gorham's, the Thin Lizzy guitarist. It's almost there.

Beirut-tell her thanks, I'm flattered. However, I'm not stupid enough to try and cuckold the guy who's leaning on a chainsaw in his picture. ~;)

that's a nice compact...

One advice though : Never ever ever use the digital zoom. The exact same effect can be accomplished on the pc.

I've used it on my holliday to get close ups of lizards & such (Olympus C450), but they turned out pixelated. It'd be better to have just made the picture using the maximum optical zoom and then enhancing the subject on the pc..

shame of those pictures ~:(.

I would also recommend Rickett's Glen State Park in northeastern PA, with more than a dozen named waterfalls....

Thanks for the compliments stormcrow and I'd like to add that everybody has put up wonderful photos, I've started to download them all, and try to organize them, which I must say has been alot harder than I thought it would.

I'm not sure if this belongs here, if it doesn't I'll create a new thread, but I'm thinking about getting a new camera. Currently I'm using a Fuji Finepix a345 with a 128mb card, I do most of my editing with the Fuji software and paint. The options I'm considering are, Fuji Finepix A600, Sony Cybershot DSCW5 and the Cannon Powershot A700.

I'm leaning towards Fuji, primarily because it's familiar and cheaper than the others, plus I wouldn't have to buy a new memory card, though I probably will upgrade that as well. Also I've downloaded photoplus and am learning to use it, it's a little bit more difficult than paint, but it does offer more options and possibilities as well.

I consider myself a beginner as far as photography goes, so if anybody has advice about cameras, editing software, and peripherals please feel free to share.

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=fuji_finepixa600%2Csony_dscw5%2Ccanon_a700&show=all

Dpreview is a great site if you want info on digital camera's. Main thing to ask yourself is why you want a different camera, and what you want to do with the new one..

I don't know how your budget is and how far you want to go with photography, but consider the Nikon D50 as well :

http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/compare_post.asp?method=sidebyside&cameras=canon_a700%2Cfuji_finepixa600%2Csony_dscw5%2Cnikon_d50&show=all

It's the cheapest digital SLR available and the great thing is that you can change lenses&have loads of options with it. I've got it myself and have nothing bad to say about it. It's a great camera to start semi-proffesional photography with...

Anyway, show us more pictures! It is after all the Gallery ~D.

This is the famous statue of Peter the Great - the rock is only two pieces and was shipped from the Ural mountains because of its perfect shape.

The Hermitage (Winter Palace) from the Neva river.

The summer residence of Peter is the Peterhof (where the G8 leaders had a dinner). This fountain is the centrepiece of the grounds.

In the background is a very dainty japanese bath house in the grounds of the Peterhof - but the foreground is much more interesting to me, containing my lovely wife!

Hmmm not sure I agree, belgian towns tend to be a bit more majestic, while dutch town are more of a cosy mess. Belgium has some really spectacular medieval towns, especially Brugge and Gent are magnificent. But then again, there is always Luik. Belgium can be very pretty, but also very grey dirty and depressing.

Very nice pictures (again) JFC. You do seem to get around the world alot (:jealous:)

Xiahou, that is a very cool picture. I don't think I've ever seen a dam like with water right to the top like that. BTW, for whatever reason, your picture isn't showing anymore.

Here are a few I took in the past week. First up was a fairly nice sunset last Friday:

https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/Sunset200608184.jpg

Next is a set of three pictures of a spider we found haning out at the back corner of our house. It is a big fella for my part of the world - you Aussies can refrain from any snide remarks.:laugh4: My son and nephew took to feeding this guy. A grasshopper took the spider all of about 20 seconds to bite, wrap up and resume its waiting position (first picture).

https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/SpiderMontpelier0.jpg

This second picture is just to give some perspective as to its size. Note from leg tip to leg tip it is well over 1 story tall - just look at the picture!

https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/SpiderMontpelier2.jpg

The last spider picture is of the spider in action. This time he's working on a Japanese beetle. These must be much tougher than the larger grasshopper as Spidey spent 2-3 minutes wrapping up the beetle before he was done.

https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/SpiderMontpelier3.jpg

You know, this spider is large enough that I almost feel obligated to give it a name...

Nice pictures of spidey, creepy as he may be...
tiny suggestion

Maybe it would've been nice to use a slower shutter speed on the last one, to show the movement...

The sunset is beautiful.
tiny suggestion
but could use a subject in it, like a bird, balloon, beautiful girl etc ;)

Nice suggestions Stormcrow. Thanks for the feedback. It is good stuff.

I like your suggestion on the last spider picture. Alas, my mind lacks the imagination to think of ideas like that when the picture is there to be taken. However, I will file that idea away for future use. It may be time to feed the spider again...hehehe.

As for the sunset picture, I thought the telephone lines at the bottom constituted a "subject". :laugh4: Anyway, from my location there wasn't anything nice to put into the frame even had I thought of it at the time. Again, I lack the creative thinking required to compose a picture that isn't there in front of me, but I'll keep that in mind for the future.

However I don't have a dog (actually I don't like dogs at all). So, ladies and gentlemen let me introduce you -"Three"!

https://img176.imageshack.us/img176/44/kittyqi1.jpg

This loveliest kitty of the planet was found in the middle of the road unable to move. His both eyes are blind -he can only notice silhouettes in adequate lighting. Vet says he's around 6-7 months now, he's with us since he was around 2 months old.

His name is "Three" because his two eyes are blind. And no, I'm not damn joking. :smoking:

cool cat, LEN.
Here's my third one (the previous two are staying with my wife). Well, chronologically speaking, this would be like the 6th one, but one is gone, two are living with my parents...

(WARNING: pics are quite big, 5-600k each; clickable thumbnails)

This is the first one my wife and I got (Joe), and he's about 2.5 years old:

And finally, the newest dude in my (now reduced) family, who's gonna have to live without another cat in the house, until I can figure out if I actually have enough space (and money) for two cats: Taz (well deserving his name), 8 weeks (and 3 days) old.

Fragony, he seems quite big (or maybe it's because of the close-up). How old, and what breed ? He's not dignifying us with relevant parts of his anatomy... ~:)

edit: drone, how do they get along with each other ? are they as territorial as cats ?
The two get along pretty well. The new one is male, while the older one is female, which helps some, they shouldn't have many alpha-dog fights because of this. Siberians generally aren't territorial, they have been bred to work with different people and other dogs, so a territorial mindset wouldn't work in the breed. The female seems a little jealous though, hopefully this will pass as the pup grows up.

Feeding time is entertaining though. If the other dog is in the room, the food is gone in seconds. Very possessive of the chow.
