Ser, you certainly have an eye for finding great camera angles and framing. The picture of the statue of Dante is particularly striking to me with the white marble of the statue and the building contrasting with a beautiful deep blue sky. Palazzo Pitti - awesome. Campo Santo - great image. The steet shots are beautifu too. :2thumbsup:

On Monday I had a few hours to do as I pleased in downtown Philadelphia. So me and my camera explored the city.
The first few images feature reflections.
Philadelphia City Hall with the statue of Pennsylvania founder & namesake William "Billy" Penn a-top:

https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/PhiladelphiaOct06_4.jpg
The famous "Love" sculpture. Some time during the morning hours, the pink colour was added to the fountain water. My guess is that it was done because October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The Amtrak building:
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/PhiladelphiaOct06_63.jpg
Lastly, while walking around the city, I couldn't help but notice unusual activity in the skies. A pair of helicopters where engaged in some rather close maneuvers amongst the skyscrapers. Later in a different part of the city I finally saw the mysterious black chopper close enough to see the markings on it...note the person sitting out the side with a gun(!!):
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Org%20Pictures/PhiladelphiaOct06_88.jpg
A few moments after finally getting an ID on the chopper, I looked across the street and saw several FBI agents with black helmets, body armour and M16s! Something was afoot and I was alarmingly close to it. After a few moments of gathering visual clues and then walking up and asking someone associated with the activity, I learned that I was witnessing filming for the movie Shooter (aka Shooters) starring Mark Wahlberg. Alas I saw neither Mark or any other celebrity I knew. All in all great end to an interesting day.

Wow ... great pics - I absolutely love the first one, Greg !
What kind of lense and resolution were you using for the pic of the helicopter?
Gregoshi
10-06-2006, 15:37
Thanks Ser. Of the pictures I took that day, the first one is my favourite too. I first saw that image while crossing a street and I nearly stopped dead in my tracks. Fortunately I found the same angle safely on the sidewalk on the other side of the intersection.
About the helicopter, I have a 12x optical zoom on my digital camera and I was shooting at 2560x1920 resolution, so it was a big image to begin with. Even after cropping out a lot of the original, I still had a decent sized image with just the helicopter.
@Ice: Yes that is Penn State football. Enjoy your visit to Happy Valley on the 14th. The atmosphere should be electric. Alas, I could go to the game too, but my kids are performing in a concert that night, so I must do the family thing instead. It is a shame that I can't be there because my seats are in the same part of the stadium that the visitors sit and we could have met for at least a few minutes.

The School of Rock also had their "Best of Season" concert this past weekend which showcases the two best songs from each show put on by the 5 Philadephia area branches of the school. As part of the show they get celebrity rock stars to play some songs with the kids. In the past they got Peter Frampton to play with the young rockers. For this past weekend they had two celebrities.
(BTW, the main spotlights were yellowish-orange, hence the odd coloration on many of the pictures)
Brad Roberts, lead singer of The Crash Test Dummies:

Nice composition Xiahou
Something interesting I noticed, if you look closely (particularly in the panorama) you can see that the waters from the north branch(scene center) of the river are far muddier than the west branch. Where the two branches merge, you can see a clear line between the muddier water and the clearer waters as they flow together. :2thumbsup:

Nice shots Xiahou. I'm guessing the first two pictures are of the Susquehanna? Whereabouts? I've seen that kind of "mud" line before. It is strange because you'd think the waters would mingle more.
The view in that last shot from your hike on Sunday looks familiar. It is similar to the view you get from the Pennsylvenia Turnpike when cruising up through the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton area. Nice shot with the sunset and the fall colours. :2thumbsup:

My path is highlighted in blue- the pin on the right is the parking area, and the pin on the left is the vista location. I started out heading roughly North along a SGL road that parrelleled 309. At one point, I felt I was on the wrong path and ended up bushwacking the rest of the way to my desination... now that I look at it on the satellite map I see I could've stayed on the dirt road and followed a powerline cut over to the destination.
For my return trip, you can see that I followed a different powerline cut until it met up with another muddy, dirt road that led me back to the parking area.
If anyone's wondering why or how I got out to this place, check out geocaching.com (http://www.geocaching.com). It's great fun for anyone that likes high-tech toys and the outdoors. :2thumbsup:

There wasn't anything inside this particular cache that interested us, so we just signed the log and re-hid it. Sometimes there's something worth swapping for, but usually it's just the thrill of the hunt. ~:thumb:

The weather was appropriately rainy- but it made outside photos inconvenient and much of the inside of the prison was also leaky with puddles everywhere. It's completely delapidated- you have to sign a waiver before they even let you explore it. I took alot more photos, but many of them ended up being pretty under-exposed. :shame:

I used Arcsoft's Panorama Maker which was in the software package that came with my digital camera. It does a fairly nice job.
BTW Xiahou, my daughter and I were looking at going to the Eastern State Penitentiary around Halloween for their "haunted house" tours. The place looks really creepy - especially in the gloomy rain of your pictures. Halloween aside, it is famous as a haunted site. Is the prison as large as it seems to be?
If you get a chance, check out hugin (http://hugin.sourceforge.net/) sometime. It's an open-source panorama maker that I use. I love it, but have no basis for comparison either.

There certainly seems to be no shortage of waterfalls around here. :beam:
The above photo was taken in Rickett's Glen State Park (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ricketts_Glen_State_Park). In that park alone, there are 24 named waterfalls- all of which can be seen within about a 7 mile hike. Beautiful place.

edyz, I really like that cloud/sunray picture. :2thumbsup:
A couple of evenings ago, our sunset featured a phenomenon known as a sun pillar, which is a column of light the width of the sun standing up from the horizon. I saw it a couple of minutes before arriving home from a movie. The "pillar" was absolutely brilliant. Alas, in the 3-4 minutes it took to get home and grab the camera, the pillar had faded quite a bit. I took the picture below. The pillar is there but hard to see. It is better seen by standing 2-3 paces back away from the monitor. The brightest part of the pillar is a segment in the center a little above the very bright yellow streak just above the horizon. As far as I can tell, the pillar extends up to nearly the top of the picture, about the same height as the tree branches on the right edge of the picture.

I can't get imageshack to work.
Anyone ever play with lens filters? I got a cheap 3-pack from Amazon and took them out to play with over the holidays. It came with a UV filter (mainly just a lens protector as far as I can tell), a warming filter, and a circular polarizer- all in a nice little case.
As I've said, the one is basically just a lens protector and I think the warming filter and probably most color enhancing type filters can probably be duplicated fairly easy in the editing phase. However, the circular polarizer was very interesting to me, so I decided to test it out on a walk at Trough Creek State Park.
Here are 2 photos- all camera settings are identical in both, the only difference being that I rotated the filter 90 degrees from one shot to the next. Notice the reflections on the water:
https://img377.imageshack.us/img377/9634/christmas06023be0.th.jpg (https://img377.imageshack.us/my.php?image=christmas06023be0.jpg)
https://img108.imageshack.us/img108/3429/christmas06022ie7.th.jpg (https://img108.imageshack.us/my.php?image=christmas06022ie7.jpg)
In the first, the water is almost mirror-like while in the second, almost all reflection is gone and you can see straight to the bottom.
Old news for sure to someone who uses filters regularly- but to me, it was fascinating. :2thumbsup:
Gregoshi
01-05-2007, 03:19
Nice Xiahou. :2thumbsup: It is also useful for shooting through windows that are reflecting. A polarizing filter is one of those that I have on my list of camera accessories.
I don't know anything about the warming filter, but I do have a UV camera which I do use as a lens protector. I seem to recall it does affect the picture taken but not by alot. I seem to recall (too lazy to look it up) it deepen the colour of a blue sky and maybe adds a little contrast but I'm not as sure about the latter. I do know it is recommended as a lens protector though.
I can't get it to load on imageshack so here's the link:

Nice shot doc. Where is that? I know Belgium is famous for its mountains, but I don't want to make any assumptions. :laugh4:
I am on a first time visit to my dad's cottage in Canada during the winter. One of the real treats, aside from ice on the lake, is that a bald eagle has taken up residence on the lake. This is the first bald eagle I've ever seen outside a zoo. I took some pictures of this majestic bird. While not the greatest quality, they are of a fairly rare creature so therefore I'll share the pictures.
First picture is of the scene. The eagle is the "dot" on top of the dead tree just to the left of center. It has been a mild winter even up here in Canada, so there is only ice around the edges of the lake.
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/Eagleand3Sisters1.jpg
This next picture is a closeup of the eagle. This is shot at 12x zoom and heavily cropped so the picture shows the eagle with reasonable detail.
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/Eagleperched1.jpg
This last shot is when the eagle took flight. As luck would have it, he decided to fly away from me so that I couldn't get a closer shot of him. Again this is at 12x zoom and heavily cropped.
https://i60.photobucket.com/albums/h12/gbresslr/Miscellaneous/Eagleflying1.jpg
It is snowing pretty heavily here today, so it seem unlikely I'll get another chance to photograph the eagle today and tomorrow I have to head home. ~:(

You know I'd expect people of their ... flavour to wear more outrageous clothing, my muso friends certainly do.
Well, the kids try to dress similar to the band or style of music they are playing. Metallica is a jeans & t-shirt kinda band rather than leather, studs and spikes hence that rather mundane dress code.
doc, I've got to remember to put Norway on my list of places I'd like to visit. :2thumbsup:

Really? Huh. Over here in the Pacific Northwest, there's a lot. See them from my house sometimes, and there's a nest 3 miles from my house. During their migration season, you can go to certain rivers and see dozens in a day hunting salmon.

I have some catching up to do.
BKS, I really like that last shot down the street at night (Crusiform building). It is amazing how those rails kind of mentally pull you down the street.
doc, are all three sets of pictures from Cuba? The landscape shots are beautiful - and surprising. I didn't know Cuba had such sheer sided mountains/hills. It has more of a South/Central American look to it. The last one in the second set is awsome. It is a shame it wasn't a little sunnier to brighten things up a bit, but still. Nice sunset shot too. :2thumbsup:

Nice shots Ser. You should let your wife bore you more often as it results in some very good pictures. :laugh4: The swan shots are especially good in the bird group. In the second group, my favourite is the boredom induced inspiration of the tortilla chip picture. And, are you going to tell us what your new camera is? Purty pluheeze?
Welcome back Krae! ~ I see you are getting quit fancy with your image manipulation skills. How'd you do get the art effect in those pictures?

nd, are you going to tell us what your new camera is?
After long years of abstinence I felt the urge to use an SLR again and bought a Nikon D80 and a set of lenses about a month ago.
Have been brooding about it for quite a while, as I actually was using my old SLR less and less and switched to a smaller digital camera (I felt it was to cumbersome to carry it around all the time on trips) but ultimately using the smaller cam revitalized my interest in photography and I hope the interest will justify spending the money for the new equipment ~:)

nice pics, Ser. hope you dont mind if i have a play with some of them. i'll keep them local to the org or ask if i want to post them somewhere else. i especially like the bird pics.
hi greg :)
the art part is a combination of some blurring, duplicated layers, adjustment layers and a couple other things. that particular style is one i developed myself and has many combinations and offshoots depending on the original pic.

That's Manhattan as seen from Weehawken, NJ.
Sadly, I forgot my tripod- I would've played with some longer exposure times... Instead, I did the best I could by balancing the camera on a railing. I was glad to see I managed a few photos that weren't a blurry mess.

greg, that last one started with a script in psp xi. i believe it was the 'airbrush and ink' script. on that i did a lot of airbrushing by hand, some brightness/contrast adjustment layers and some 'clarify', along with some other hand work.
quite fun to do :)
nice, dark cityscape, xiahou! always love those. got any lightning ones?

Unfortunately, no. I'd love to take some if the right opportunity ever arises though.
Usually, whenever it storms either my view is obstructed by something, or I don't have anywhere to shoot it that is sheltered from the rain, ect. :shame:

ah, ok.
what exposure time did you use to get that one, xiahou?
1/10

Here's one I took with a slower shutter speed. If you look closely, you'll see some significant blurring- it may not really show up at this resolution though.

The bird pics were all taken with 200 mm focal width (would be equivalent to 300 mm on classic/conventional cameras). In addition I also was able to get quite close to the swans (they weren't particularly shy ~:))

Ser,
nice pics! i especially like the opera one.
and kuni, if i could do that as well as you do, i'd probably starve to death cause i'd be doing nothing else, including eating :)
ok, i took the opera pic and was going to 'artify' it, but the more i played with it, the more i realized it really didnt need to be made into art. the art is already there. so, instead, i just tried to enhance what was already there. this was mostly just re-lighting it with some adjustment layers, a bit of 'clarify' and some airbrushing where the whites had 'blown out' (r=255, g=255, b=255).

Ser, nice shots of Paris. I like the "eyes", Louvre pyramid, and the chimneys pictures in particular. Did you use a polarizing filter in some of the shots? I ask because the sky is intensely blue in some of the shots.

@ Krae
Nice work - by emphasizing the gold the enhancement now does justice to the overall feeling that you have when you are standing in that hall
@ Greg
I did indeed have a polarizing filter on my "standard" lense for a lot of the pictures I made (I don't now - I just love this filter, although under the conditions duriong that weekend it really makes the sky look borderline artificial ~:))

https://img227.imageshack.us/img227/219/nidda4cm0.jpg
This was taken when I dug out my old SLR (my wife wanted to use it) and checked if it was still working. The camera itself was still fine however the film was so old that the colors had started to deteriorate.
This is the original picture:
https://img520.imageshack.us/img520/6205/nidda5gn6.jpg
When looking at it we thought that the relection of the trees in the water actually looked quite nice, so the picture on top of the post shows the reflections flipped 180° with the color scheme and the contrast altered a bit (now I only have to work on removing those ducks ~;))

Here is a link to a photography project by a French amateur astronomer. He photographed the full moon for a period of two years and then animated it - two years condensed into two seconds. It shows a moon growing, shrinking and wobbling (libration)...a "drunken moon" as an editor of Sky & Telescope magazine put it. It is very cool. In the text under the image of all the moons in together is the link to the animation. There are gif and flash versions, but I found the flash version plays smoother. Im 20. I know I look 15 lol.
Its an AK47 with polymer stocks and a first generation UZI with the extended barrel. We have the shortened one but it makes it a lot less accurate.

Isn't mine though, my walls are still white, the pic was taken at the house of a friend, was her bday party, not mine.

Panzerjager, what country do you live in that allows you to own such weapons? I happen to live in the one tiny segment of the UK that allows you to touch a handgun, and actually the only place you can acquire a licence. You have to be part of a gun club and register for all kinds of safety courses and such, but if it means I can actually own a Sig Sauer P229 9mm, then I don't mind.

Indeed, the USA. Its a great country! We can own fully automatic weapons as well as handguns, rifles and shotguns.
For military and auto weapons, you only need to pay a small license fee (well, a couple hundred dollars) and pass a background check to make sure you're not a criminal.

I never knew that. I always thought that Shotguns, Rifles, and Handguns you were allowed, but not fully automatic weapons.
And you Americans were shocked at things like Columbia and Virgina Tech. And you were shot, too. tisk tisk. (says the guy who is getting a gun himself, and is an American citizen :beam::shame:).
What state are auto weapons allowed? Or are they all?

I was not surprised by Columbine or VA Tech. Though, you have to ask yourself, what are the chances of something like that happening to you? I believe they are about the same as being struck by lightning. There are always risks that are associated with increased freedoms.
I know there are different regulations by state, but I believe the auto regs are federal, so if you pay the license and pass the test, you can own autos in every state. Im not postiive though.

I've got projects in mind, but haven't gotten out to do them. I've been taking some pictures whilst walking around the grounds of my wife's grandfather's farm the past couple of weekends. I'll sort through them for any worth posting.

Explaining to my parents what I intended to use the picture for would have been.. interesting...
Most of the trophies are just participation in Baseball, which I played for 9 years... wasted years...
CA you use a Mac don't you?
lol, nah, just a camera phone with bad lighting.

Count,
I used to think my old man was as straight and boring as you could get... I got myself a motorbike and dont think he didnt call me an idiot evey day for that MC. Then after he died I discovered he used to ride motorbikes and hung out in a gang!!!! He and his mates used to have this apartment where they seduced girls !!! and in the 1950s this was consider about as edgey as you could get. I still LMAO thinking about him paying out on me about my mc :laugh4: :laugh4: :laugh4:

Yo fellaz, you're trying to make me die of insta-cancer since it's been a few days since I've turned 24 ?
I appeal. I have reported all these posts with wedding photos to the administration. I sense malice. :wall:
Ok, I'll go with the flow...
EDITED PICTURE OUT.
Nice pics, guys.
@ Andres: I somehow imagined you with longer hair than that, but otherwise you actually look fairly close to how I'd always pictured you.
Yup, Andres is as I imagined him

sorry dude how was I to know I would open the wedding photo flood gates that so many were lurking :help:
- waiting for the opportunity to glean back some of the thousands of their hard earned pennys that disappeared into these photos, now clawed back one by one, showing them to unsuspecting door knockers, Mormons, and Orgers (sure we want to hear about your God, would you mind if we looked at our wedding photos while you talk :shame: *sounds of running footsteps*) :book:
Oh and Happy Birthday!! :2thumbsup: - 24 dude you getting oooooolllldddd
you married yet???!!! :laugh4: :laugh4: :laugh4:
sorry :shame:
