Zimbabwean holidaymaker eaten by shark described by onlookers as 'longer than a minibus'
Witnesses today described their horror at seeing a tourist being eaten by a "gigantic" shark in South Africa (http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/southafrica)'s most popular holiday destination.
Lloyd Skinner was pulled under the surf and dragged out to sea by the shark, believed to be a great white, off Fish Hoek beach in Cape Town. His diving goggles and a dark patch of blood were all that remained in the water.
"Holy shit. We just saw a gigantic shark eat what looked like a person in front of our house," witness Gregg Coppen posted on Twitter (http://twitter.com/skabenga). "That shark was huge. Like dinosaur huge."

Seattle is considering having parks ban (http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/localnews/2010798342_newsmoking15m.html) sex, smoking and spitting.
:dizzy2:
No spitting. No smoking. No sex.
The list of rules in Seattle parks may be about to grow.
A proposed ban on spitting in parks — one of 13 behaviors Seattle Parks and Recreation wants to regulate, including a ban on smoking on its grounds — already is generating heated public comment.
The proposal was presented Thursday night to the park commissioners.
But after reports about the proposed ban, even before the meeting, commissioners were getting e-mail.
"Spitting? Are the players not allowed to chew tobacco and spit sunflower seeds?" said one e-mail to the parks board obtained by The Times. "Why not farting? It's the big elephant in the room.
"While we're at it, we should use the opportunity to ban women's hair spray and other bodily spray that in total smells like DDT."

Unclear on the concept: Woman Found Guilty of Stalking Herself (http://www.themercury.com.au/article/2010/01/14/121411_scalesofjustice.html)
A WOMAN has been found guilty of stalking, in a bizarre case in which she tried to organise acts of violence – against herself. [...] The Hobart Magistrates Court heard Bronte Park general store owner Wayne Turale started receiving a series of disturbing letters in October 2006.
Over 18 months, he received 10 of the poorly written letters, instructing him to perform or organise acts of violence against Mrs Triffett, who was one of his customers.
Each letter was signed with the name "Mick".
The court heard a crossbow was mentioned in at least one letter and the implication was that "something had to be done" about Mrs Triffett.
"I think it was 'get someone to run her over or shoot her'," Mr Turale said. [...]
The letters continued until March 2008 and were passed on to Mr Turale by the new store owner.
The sinister mail was extremely disturbing and upsetting, he said. [...]
When police visited Mrs Triffett, she denied writing the letters.
But forensic scientists later found a likely match between her DNA and DNA found on some of the letters, stamps and envelopes.

Members of the weight-loss club were lining up to compare readings on the scales when they heard a bang as the floor came away from the walls of their meeting room in Växjö in southern Sweden.
“We suddenly heard a huge thud – we almost thought it was an earthquake and everything flew up in the air. The floor collapsed in one corner of the room and along the walls,” one of the those present told the Smålandsposten newspaper.
They abandoned the room as the floor started to give way in other areas.

Killer can't be deported because he might kill again
An Iraqi immigrant who stabbed two doctors to death has won the right to stay in Britain after a judge ruled that he would pose a danger to the public in his homeland.
By David Barrett, Home Affairs Correspondent
Published: 8:30PM GMT 23 Jan 2010
An immigration tribunal decided that Laith Alani, a paranoid schizophrenic, should not be deported to Iraq because it would breach his human rights and put people there at risk.
Alani has spent the past 19 years in a secure hospital after he killed two NHS consultants in a frenzied attack because he believed he had received a "command from Allah".
The Home Office wanted to deport him on his release to protect the British public, but he appealed to the Asylum and Immigration Tribunal (AIT) where a panel led by Lance Waumsley, a senior immigration judge, ruled that he could remain in the UK.
The widows of the two doctors, who were not informed of the killer's legal victory or the plans to release him back into society until they were contacted by The Sunday Telegraph, expressed their shock at the decision.
One of the reasons given by the judges is that if Alani was sent back to Iraq he would be unlikely to receive medicine which keeps his paranoid schizophrenic under control.
They said in their judgement: "If his present treatment ... were to be discontinued, as would most likely be the case if he were to be removed to Iraq, the potential consequences would be extremely serious for (Alani) himself, and potentially life-threatening for innocent third parties around him in the event of his likely, indeed almost inevitable, relapse into a state of paranoid schizophrenia."
Alani, now 41, has been receiving the drug clozapine on the NHS for 10 years, and the AIT was told it was the only medication found suitable to treat his mental condition.
The judgement, which was delivered in October but has only just been revealed, also states that deportation would breach the killer's right to a private and family life because he moved to the UK with his parents as a child.
Alani killed Michael Masser and Kenneth Paton, both consultant cosmetic surgeons, at Pinderfields Hospital, Wakefield, West Yorkshire, in November 1990.
Mr Paton's widow, Dorothy, who still lives at the home she shared with him in Ossett, near Wakefield, said last night of Alani: "I think he should be deported. I argued that at the time of the trial.
"I think he is going to be a danger to people in Britain. He is a dangerous man."
Dr Jasmina Masser, who like her late husband specialises in plastic surgery, said: "I am very shocked by this news. I was once very hurt by these events."
The case comes after The Sunday Telegraph revealed how the AIT regularly overturns attempts by the Home Office to deport foreign criminals at the end of their sentences.
Last year this newspaper disclosed how dangerous offenders from overseas, including killers and paedophiles, had used the Human Rights Act to avoid deportation despite a pledge by Gordon Brown, the Prime Minister, to remove any foreigner who breaks the law.
Mr Brown said in 2007 that foreigners must "play by the rules or face the consequences", adding: "If you commit a crime you will be deported from our country."
Alani had come into contact with the two doctors after being referred to their clinic for removal of a tattoo from his arm – a picture of an eagle above the words "Republic of Iraq" – because he claimed the adornment was against his religion.
He became concerned about how long he would have to wait for the procedure, and even tried to remove the tattoo himself by scraping his arm with a knife.
Mr Masser, 42, was stabbed six times in the throat and chest with a sheath knife. His widow gave birth to son Harry six weeks before Alani's trial; the couple already had a seven-year-old daughter.
Mr Paton, who was 56, and married with three grown-up children, suffered 24 stab wounds in the chest and abdomen.
The surgeons' bodies were discovered by Mr Paton's secretary, Pamela Mackay, when blood was seen coming from underneath the door of a consulting room.
After his arrest, Alani told detectives: "It was a command from Allah. I have had visions from Allah and you can't be more right than Allah."
He told police he believed one of the doctors was Satan and one was Lucifer, and said he had added their names to a death list which also included James Whale, the broadcaster, who had earlier 'cut off' Alani during a radio phone-in during which he expressed anti-Semitic views.
At his trial at Leeds Crown Court in 1991, Alani, who was unemployed and living in Wakefield at the time of the crimes, admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He was sent to Rampton maximum security hospital indefinitely.
But he was transferred to a smaller "regional secure unit" in 2005.
The AIT said that in 2008, as part of his "staged preparation for his intended release into normal society", Alani was moved again, this time to a 12-bed residential care home which operates as a "therapeutic community" for people with mental health problems.
He could be set free next year.
Actually, it is probably because Iran told the UK to "not go there" and with the sentence of death... they relented.

Who Caused the Earthquake in Haiti? XENU! (http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100123/lf_afp/haitiquakehealthreligionscientology_20100123063004)
PORT-AU-PRINCE (AFP) – Amid the mass of aid agencies piling in to help Haiti quake victims is a batch of Church of Scientology "volunteer ministers", claiming to use the power of touch to reconnect nervous systems.
Clad in yellow T-shirts emblazoned with the logo of the controversial US-based group, smiling volunteers fan out among the injured lying under makeshift shelters in the courtyard of Port-au-Prince's General Hospital.
A wealthy private donor provided his airplane to fly in 80 volunteers from Los Angeles, along with 50 Haitian-American-doctors, in a gesture worth 400,000 dollars, said a Parisian volunteer who gave her name as Sylvie.
"We're trained as volunteer ministers, we use a process called 'assist' to follow the nervous system to reconnect the main points, to bring back communication," she said.
"When you get a sudden shock to a part of your body the energy gets stuck, so we re-establish communication within the body by touching people through their clothes, and asking people to feel the touch."
Next to her lay 22-year-old student Oscar Elweels, whose father rescued him from the basement of his school where he lay with a pillar on his leg for a day after the deadly January 12 quake.
His right leg was amputated below the knee and his left leg was severely bruised and swollen.
More than half of his fellow students died in the rubble of his school, although the rest of his family was unscathed, he said, thanking God.
"One hour ago he had no sensation in his left leg, so I explained the method to him, I touched him and after a while he said 'now I feel everything'," said Sylvie.
"Otherwise they might have had to amputate his other leg. Now his sister knows the method and she can do it."
Asked about the method being used on him, a smiling Elweels described it as "a sort of harmony between the nerves, a kind of exercise. I couldn't feel at all, but then I could."
Does he know Scientology? "Yes, it's a French organization," he said.
"All the patients are happy with the technique," said Sylvie. "But some doctors don't like the yellow T-shirts. It's a color thing," she insisted.
Crazies.
Pity they didn't send people who can actually be of assistance.

California School District to Consider Un-banning Dictionary (http://www.pe.com/localnews/inland/stories/PE_News_Local_W_dictionary23.466f8d4.html)
https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/Lemurmania/dictionary_EVIL.jpg
The Menifee Union School District is forming a committee to review whether dictionaries containing the definitions for sexual terms should be permanently banned from the district's classrooms, a district official said Friday.
The 9,000-student K-8 district this week pulled all copies of Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary after an Oak Meadows Elementary School parent complained about a child stumbling across definitions for "oral sex." [...]
The committee will "determine the extent to which the challenged material supports curriculum, the educational appropriateness of the material and its suitability to the age level of the students," according to school district policy.
Cadmus wouldn't estimate how long the committee might take to review the dictionaries.
The collegiate dictionaries were purchased several years ago to allow advanced readers in the fourth and fifth grades to look up words that they didn't know, Cadmus said.
Other less extensive and more elementary dictionaries remain available to students, she said.
The committee will decide what to do with the Merriam-Webster dictionaries if the ban becomes permanent. The district paid $24 for each dictionary, which are currently stored away from students. They might be sold or exchanged for other dictionaries, Cadmus said.

The prison’s rationale for the ban is that playing D&D might stimulate “gang activity” by inmates. But the government conceded that there is no evidence that Dungeons and Dragons actually had stimulated gang activity in the past, either in this prison or elsewhere. The only evidence for the supposedly harmful effects of Dungeons and Dragons were a few cases from other states where playing the game supposedly led inmates to indulge in “escapism” and become divorced from reality, one case where two non-inmates committed a crime in which they “acted out” a D&D story-line, and one where a longtime D&D player (not an inmate) committed suicide. [...]
The court also cited statements by a “gang expert” who argued that playing D&D might stimulate gang activity because Dungeons and Dragons has a structure similar to a gang.

Sexed-up president says pork better than Viagra
Argentina's president has recommended pork as an alternative to Viagra, saying she spent a satisfying weekend with her husband after eating the barbecued meat.
"I've just been told something I didn't know, that eating pork improves your sex life," President Cristina Fernandez said to leaders of Argentina's pig farming industry.
"I'd say it's a lot nicer to eat a bit of grilled pork than take Viagra."
Ms Fernandez also said she recently ate pork and "things went very well that weekend, so it could well be true".
Argentines are the world's biggest per capita consumers of beef, but the government has sought to promote pork as an alternative in recent years due to rising steak prices and as a way to diversify the meat industry.
"Trying it doesn't cost anything, so let's give it a go," Ms Fernandez said in the televised speech.

Australia bans small-boobed porn (http://guyism.com/2010/01/australia-bans-small-boobs-in-porn.html)

The proposed Australian Government clampdown on smut just got a whole lot broader, as news emerged of a ban on small breasts [...] Breasts came under the spotlight a year ago, as Senators Barnaby Joyce and Guy Barnett commenced a campaign against publicly available porn. Rounding up magazines from corner shops and filling stations, Senator Joyce claimed that publications featuring small-breasted women were encouraging paedophilia.
The result of this campaign is now visible in the decisions being made by the Australian Classification Board, which is beginning to apply RC (refused classification) categories to such material, as opposed to the previous X-rating. According to Fiona Patten, Convenor of the Australian Sex Party: “We are starting to see depictions of women in their late 20s being banned because they have an A cup size.
“It may be an unintended consequence of the Senator’s actions but they are largely responsible for the sharp increase in breast size in Australian adult magazines of late.”
The Wasabi-smell Smoke Alarm (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-10443919-1.html)
The Japanese are getting teary-eyed over a smoke alarm for deaf people that emits a strong odor of wasabi, according to a recent Nikkei Net article.
Instead of an ear-piercing wail, the device unleashes the chemical compound allyl isothiocyanate, which gives horseradish, mustard, and wasabi their bite. A red LED on the alarm also starts flashing when smoke is detected.
In tests on sleeping people with normal or no hearing, the device woke nearly all subjects up within two and a half minutes after the stench hit their nostrils. Further tests determined the ideal intensity of airborne wasabi to wake people up but not hurt their eyes in the process.

You don't want to deny Po the pit viper his regular morning cigarette - he's guaranteed to throw a hissy fit.
That's because the three-year-old reptile from Taipei in Taiwan has become hooked on nicotine, thanks to his owner Sho Lau's 20-a-day habit.
'He is very tame and one day when I threw a cigarette butt away he went for it and seemed to enjoy having it in his mouth,' said 33-year-old Lau.
'One thing led to another and before long he was having one cigarette in the morning and another at night.'
'He gets very agitated if I don't have any to spare,' he added.

It's official: US military to build AT-ATs (http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/feb/02/bigdog-military-robot).
https://www.youtube.com/user/bostondynamics?blend=6&ob=4&rclk=cti#p/a/f/0/W1czBcnX1Ww
Now a new BigDog - even bigger than this one - is in development. Last week the US military research wing Darpa awarded a $32m contract to the same developers to create a that can go nearly double the distance, carry more weight and last for up to 24 hours.
According to the press release put out by Darpa (PDF (http://www.darpa.mil/news/2009/LS3DARPA.pdf)), the Legged Squad Support System (LS3) will "develop a walking quadruped platform that will augment squads by carrying traditional and new equipment autonomously".
Let's see where this one goes.
Now who's the evil empire bend on dominating the entire universe, eh?

Whether it's dressing like a dominatrix for Halloween, skipping around a pole-dancing pole or performing the totally un-PG hits 'Smack That' and 'Tik Tok', we suspect this nine-year-old could easily notch up more scandals than her big sis by the time she hits her teens.
The latest news that's got us scratching our heads and wondering, yet again, 'what were her parents thinking?' ...little Noah is set to become a lingerie model.
She'll be teaming up with her pint-sized best friend Emily Grace to launch a children's lingerie collection for 'Ohh! La, La! Couture'.
The company's website describes The Emily Grace Collection as having a “trendy, sweet, yet edgy feel, reminiscent of Emily’s true personality. She is collaborating with Ooh! La, La! Couture designers to create versatile styles that can be worn with sweet ballerina slippers, funky sneakers or paired with lace stockings and boots for more of a rock and roll look. Extinct: Andaman tribe’s extermination complete as last member dies
The last member of a unique tribe has died on India’s Andaman Islands.
Boa Sr, who died last week aged around 85, was the last speaker of ‘Bo’, one of the ten Great Andamanese (http://assets.survivalinternational.org/pictures/522/Boa_Sr_chachi_2005_screen.jpg) languages. The Bo are thought to have lived in the Andaman Islands for as much as 65,000 years, making them the descendants of one of the oldest human cultures on Earth.
‘With the death of Boa With the death of Boa Sr and the extinction of the Bo language, a unique part of human society is now just a memory'.
** See the 'Last of the Bo' sing her song here: http://www.survivalinternational.org/news/5509 **
Not really weird news, but where else to share this.
There is something unspeakably sad about this. A 65.000 year old line has been broken. An entire world has come to an end with the passing away of this woman.
Just because they were a small tribe, does not make them secondary, or a mere subgroup. Owing to its complete isolation, and early split of the rest of humanity, this single tribe is as much an entire group of humans as much as far larger groups are. 'Celts' or 'Latins' are a few thousand years old. Indo-Europeans six to eight thousand years old. The Bo are an estimated 30-60 thousand year old.
Now they are extinct. :embarassed:
(There are several roughly related tribes left. Their total population combined is estimated at fifty. They will die out one by one in our lifetime. Ending a human line, a race if one wishes, that is older than that of East Asians, Europeans or Aboriginals)

11 Year Old Girl Give Birth to a Baby Boy
http://www.foxnews.com/images/596889/3_61_11_year_old_baby_320.jpg
Friday, February 05, 2010
By Jessica Ryen Doyle
An 11-year-old girl in the Northeast recently gave birth to a baby boy, the girl’s family told Fox News.
"My daughter and (her) baby are fine, and the baby is absolutely beautiful," said the mother of the 11-year-old girl. The girl and her family are not being named in order to protect the new parent's privacy.
According to Dr. Manny Alvarez, managing health editor of FoxNews.com, the girl’s age places her in significant danger.
"A very comprehensive approach to her care needs to be instituted early in her pregnancy," Alvarez said.
A recent report by the Guttmacher Institute said teen pregnancies in the U.S. were up 3 percent in 2006. But this case is not about a teenager, noted Dr. Abdulla Al-Khan, a leading high-risk obstetrician — it’s about a pre-teen whose body is not yet built to carry a child.
"Her body is clearly not defined for pregnancy with its short stature," Al-Khan said. "Her chest is not extensively developed for breast tissue, her bones aren't quite fused, and once you expose a child this young to high amounts of progesterone and especially estrogen, there is (a possibility) that it could halt her growth."
Al-Khan said other medical challenges facing a pregnant girl as young as 10 or 11 include:
— The pelvis is not defined for natural childbirth;
— The vagina could sustain injury during a natural birth;
— The patient is at high risk for preeclampsia, a pregnancy condition marked by high blood pressure and protein in the urine, and which can lead to convulsions and multi-system organ failure;
— A higher risk of pre-term labor and delivery, which would mean the baby’s size would be compromised, leaving the baby at risk for developmental issues, fetal growth restriction and chromosomal abnormalities;
— Higher incidence of stillbirth;
— Higher incidence of cholestasis of pregnancy, a condition caused by the blockage of bile, which can lead to stillbirth and placenta issues;
— A chance of developing fatty liver, which can be fatal.
"The textbooks don’t even tell you how to deal with a 10-year-old; it’s completely different even though we understand the basics," Al-Khan said.
Al-Khan said a patient like this would benefit from early intervention and would have to be seen on a weekly basis during the pregnancy to prevent complications.
"Think about how difficult a pregnancy is for someone in their 20s or 30s ... the aches, pains, the sleep deprivation," Al-Khan said. "Now imagine it in a child."
There are also psychological issues associated with pre-teen pregnancy because a 10-year-old cannot be mentally ready to give birth, Al-Khan said.
"This is heart-wrenching because you have a kid whose mental capacities can’t possibly wrap themselves around what it means to be a mother," agreed Dr. Keith Ablow, a psychiatrist and Fox News contributor. "There are so many psychological minefields in store for her. Feelings of guilt, feelings of wanting to nurture another human being, and yet this is all very, very complex and intense when she looks to her own family to essentially support, and if you will, father her child."
Ablow pointed out that the girl is dependent on her own family to take care of her, yet she now has a child who is dependent on her.
"She has her own life plan, and yet there’s another life that should take precedence," Ablow said.
According to the Guttmacher Institute, nearly half of all 15-19 year-olds in the U.S. have had sex at least once.
In 2002, some 13 percent of never-married females aged 15-19 had had sex before the age of 15, according to the think tank.
Al-Khan said it was likely that the possibility of terminating the baby would have come up in this case, because as sensitive a subject as it is, going through with the pregnancy would be a greater risk than having an abortion.
The youngest documented case of a child pregnancy was in 1939 in Lima, Peru, Al-Khan said. Lina Medina was six years old when she became pregnant and gave birth to a baby.
Saudis Reject Ambassador Whose Names Means "Biggus Dickus" (http://blog.foreignpolicy.com/posts/2010/02/03/ambassador_at_very_large)
Despite having served for years as a distinguished Pakistani diplomat, Akbar Zeb reportedly cannot receive accreditation as Pakistan's ambassador to Saudi Arabia. The reason, apparently, has nothing to do with his credentials, and everything to do with his name -- which, in Arabic, translates to "biggest dick." [...]
According to this Arabic-language article in the Arab Times, Pakistan had previously floated Zeb's name as ambassador to the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain, only to have him rejected for the same reason. One can only assume that submitting Zeb's name to a number of Arabic-speaking countries is some unique form of punishment designed by the Pakistani Foreign Ministry -- or the result of a particularly egregious cockup.

Getting paid to spank the monkey ... at a morgue (http://blogs.seattleweekly.com/dailyweekly/2010/02/monkey_spankings_at_the_morgue.php?rss)
Was it good government practice for morgue staffers to provide the King County medical examiner with samples of their sperm at $20 a pop? The voluntary ejaculations were a bit unseemly, a new county investigations report reveals, but at least the self-abuse wasn't an abuse of authority. [...]
A whistle-blower had raised the question of Chief Medical Examiner Richard Harruff's sperm-gathering in a 2007 complaint, but it wasn't until two weeks ago that the county Ombudsman's Office issued its report, along with findings on whether or not the ME's office had properly handled brain tissue and fetal remains.
The morgue, located in a corner of Harborview Medical Center on Pill Hill, has long been a controversial workplace where employees have sued over sexual harassment and unusual practices. The new ombudsman's report, issued January 29, looked into some of those issues, first raised in a 16-page complaint filed in August, 2007 by former ME staffer Robinette Struckel.
The sperm-donation practice was at the top of her list. It seemed, at the least she said, inappropriate to ask fellow workers to masturbate--perhaps on county time--and ejaculate into a specimen catcher in return for a cash award from the boss.
But the office of ombudsman Amy Calderwood determined no harm was done.

As the son of the world's biggest bunny, it was always likely that Ralph the rabbit was going to be a big buck.
But he has well and truly proved a chip off the old block after breaking the record set by his mother Amy - weighing in at more than three stone.
Ralph, a continental giant rabbit, is just 12 months old but already weighs more than Amy did before her death in 2009.
Owner Pauline Grant relies on handouts from neighbours to feed Ralph - who weighs more than an average three-year-old child and has already become too heavy for her to lift.
'He is just so big. You do not fully realise until you pick him up and he has quite the appetite,' she said.
'It really hits us in the pocket having to feed him but thankfully Ralph is so famous in the area people stop me in supermarkets and offer to fit the bill.'
'I have no idea how big he is going to get, it could be a ridiculous size but everyone loves him and he laps up the attention.'
Pauline is waiting on Guinness World Records to confirm Ralph as the biggest rabbit in the world after they changed their rules on measuring animals for size.
Ralph's dad Roberto is also a previous record holder for the world's biggest rabbit after weighting in at 35lb and measuring 3ft 1inches.

I am perplexed. Not that this spying thing happens; I mean it's been coming the USA for a loooooong time with an unhealthy "if you would not do anything wrong you would not care about your privacy" attitude (one that is apparently prevalent in the UK as well). But did that school basically say "okay, here you have a shiny laptop: go and use it as you see fit" or did it say "here you can borrow one of the school laptops to do homework on"??? Either way seems awfully irresponsible spending of a school budget.

Man Breaks into Jail for Sex with Girlfriend
Updated: Monday, 22 Feb 2010, 7:42 AM EST

(The Sun) - A horny German man who broke into jail at night for sex romps with his imprisoned girlfriend faces a stretch behind bars himself, The Sun reported Monday.
Daniele Eberhardt, 33, was arrested after other female prisoners complained that he and his unnamed lover's "grunts and groans" kept them awake at night and made them feel "frustrated."
"It was like a bad porno movie," one inmate said.
Eberhardt climbed up a ten foot fence, evaded surveillance cameras and used a skeleton key to get in the jail in the city of Bielefeld, northern Germany.
Prosecutors said he will go on trial for trespassing next month.

A NIGHT of drunken skylarking has left a Ukrainian tourist with a hangover he will always remember - and taxpayers with a huge bill.
After a night on the drink, the 19-year-old man scaled down a cliff at Sydney's northern beaches suburb of Manly but got stuck half way and passed out, The Daily Telegraph reports.
After being alerted by a fisherman, rescue workers found him asleep on his back on a ledge 30m above sea level at North Head early yesterday morning.
The rescue operation will cost taxpayers at least $10,000.
But the man will only be charged the cost of the road trip to hospital - likely to be as little as $700.
Garth Thomson, who repeatedly shook the man's leg to wake him up so he could be winched to safety, said he had not seen anything like it in his 15-year ambulance career.
I'm not sure a rescue was needed. He got pretty far drunk, he probably could have made it to the bottom hungover.

That's a bit misleading.
Right now the top 1% of taxpayers pay 40% of all Federal income taxes (a percentage that went up in the Bush years).
These 400 households only have a low effective rate because the capital gains tax is relatively low compared to income tax, and apparently they made most of their money from capital gains.

Meanwhile, big scandal, hot star caught sucking off neighbor (http://arstechnica.com/science/news/2010/02/host-star-caught-sucking-the-atmosphere-off-a-hot-jupiter.ars)!
[R]esearchers have spotted [an exoplanet similar to Jupiter] that's so close and so hot that its host star has distorted its atmosphere into the shape of an American football and is gradually sucking it off the planet.
The planet was the 12th found by the Wide Angle Search for Planets project, and it's got some pretty unusual stats: 1.4 times Jupiter's mass, an orbital period of just over a day, and a distance from its host star's surface of only about three times the radius of the star itself. But the real surprise is that WASP-12b has a radius that's roughly 1.8 times that of Jupiter. It's close enough to its host star to get hot, but not that hot.
The authors apparently considered alternative sources of heat, and focused on the tidal forces that arise given its proximity to the host star. They calculated that, assuming properties similar to Jupiter, the tidal heating of WASP-12b would be strong enough to "drive ongoing envelope expansion." In other words, the atmosphere would blow up like a balloon. Thanks to the gravitational pull of the star, it wouldn't be spherical though; in the accompanying press material, comparisons were made to the balls used in rugby or US football.
In fact, the gravity would be so intense that the atmosphere would expand past the Lagrange point on the side closest to the star, allowing it to be sucked away from the planet.

https://img.photobucket.com/albums/v489/Lemurmania/481679-cartman_super.jpg
Blackwater personnel appear to have gone to exceptional lengths to obtain weapons from U.S. military weapons storehouses intended for use by the Afghan police. According to the committee, at the behest of the company’s Afghanistan country manager, Ricky Chambers, Blackwater on at least two occasions acquired hundreds of rifles and pistols from a U.S. military facility near Kabul called 22 Bunkers by the military and Pol-e Charki by the Afghans. Gen. David Petraeus, the commander of all U.S. military forces in the Middle East and South Asia, wrote to the committee to explain that “there is no current or past written policy, order, directive, or instruction that allows U.S. Military contractors or subcontractors in Afghanistan to use weapons stored at 22 Bunkers.”
On one of those occasions, in September 2008, Chief Warrant Officer Greg Sailer, who worked at 22 Bunkers and is a friend of a Blackwater officer working in Afghanistan, signed over more than 200 AK-47s to an individual identified as “Eric Cartman” or possibly “Carjman” from Blackwater’s Counter Narcotics Training Unit. A Blackwater lawyer told committee staff that no one by those names has ever been employed by the company. Eric Cartman is the name of an obnoxious character from Comedy Central’s popular “South Park” cartoon.

After suffering several blows, Joel Ricks removed the blindfold and grabbed the hammer, although he was unable to get it away from his wife, who continued trying to hit him. [...]
Joel Ricks, who suffered only minor injuries, told sheriff's deputies that sleeping bags had been spread on the floor under his feet, and that nearby he saw a 9-inch-long kitchen knife inside a plastic bag.

Weird in a freakish, sad way:
Australian woman died after 'head was cut off during freak lawnmower accident'
An Australian woman walking to work was killed during a freak accident after she was struck in the head by flying metal thrown up by a grass cutter, which left her decapitated.
The 42 year-old woman, who has not been named, is believed to have been struck by a 60cm piece of steel pipe, in what witnesses described as a “freak accident”.
Police said a tractor pulling a grass cutter ran over a steel pipe that had been lying in the long grass, which was then sent flying through the air at great speed. Initial reports (http://www.townsvillebulletin.com.au/article/2010/03/03/119495_news.html) suggested she had been hit by a lawnmower blade due to the horrific nature of her injuries. Police are investigating whether it was a blade that struck her.

Weird in a rather astonishing way:
The oral traditions of the Lemba tribe of Zimbabwe claims they are descendants of a Jewish tribe that left Israel 2500 years ago.
Modern genetics says they may be right too...
In many ways, the Lemba tribe of Zimbabwe and South Africa are just like their neighbours.
But in other ways their customs are remarkably similar to Jewish ones.
They do not eat pork, they practise male circumcision, they ritually slaughter their animals, some of their men wear skull caps and they put the Star of David on their gravestones.
Their oral traditions claim that their ancestors were Jews who fled the Holy Land about 2,500 years ago.
It may sound like another myth of a lost tribe of Israel, but British scientists have carried out DNA tests which confirm their Semitic origin.
These tests back up the group's belief that a group of perhaps seven men married African women and settled on the continent. The Lemba, who number perhaps 80,000, live in central Zimbabwe and the north of South Africa.

Guys.... I just get this ridiculously shocking news....
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1256290/Man-chopped-virgin-wifes-head-refused-children.html#ixzz0hb7ggMBd
Man 'chopped his virgin wife's head off because she refused to have children'
A postal inspector went on trial in France today accused of chopping his wife’s head off because she refused to have children.
Philippe Cousin, 53, said he suffered a ‘mid life crisis’ when he approached his half century without a son or daughter.
He blamed it on his 47-year-old wife, Nicole, who was still a virgin despite having been married to him for more than 21 years.
On April 16th 2007, Cousin telephoned his local police station in Arras, northern France, and told an officer: ‘Excuse me for disturbing you, I’ve killed my wife.’
In a fit of rage following a domestic argument, he had taken a kitchen knife to her neck before slicing her head off.
This morning he appeared before a judge at the Pas-de-Calais assizes at Saint-Omer, near Calais, facing life in prison for murder.
He denies the charge, pleading diminished responsibility, but faces life in prison.
The court heard how Cousins also told police: ‘I’m sorry for the work which I’ ve given you.
'My wife shouted my name out, I decapitated her. You realise that, and I’m not mad!’
While on remand he said his wife’s inability to have children lay at the heart of the couple’s domestic difficulties.
She feared that she would pass on her father’s multiple sclerosis through his genes, the court heard.
This meant that every time he tried to have sex he was rebuffed. An autopsy confirmed that Mrs Cousins was indeed a virgin when she died, even though she married aged 21.
Defending barrister Didier Robiquet said that the problems came to a head two weeks before Cousin’s 50th birthday in what was described as ‘pressure cooker’ syndrome.
‘His wife had threatened to leave him but he had never undergone any psychiatric treatment because of this,’ said Mr Robiquet.
‘He had been hugely frustrated over more than twenty years and this built up into a terrifying repressed aggression which finally exploded. He did not feel he was completely in control of his actions.’
Cousins was described as being of otherwise good character, with a distinguished record as a postal inspector in the Calais region.
He told officers that he was generally feel down about life as he approached 50, and that he had been previously used to sorting out his problems with his wife, whom he loved dearly.

Another Republican out of the closet.
I think the reason people like he strongly opposed gay rights is because they were in denial about their true feelings, and decided to take it out on those outside of the closet in order to try to convince himself he is not homosexual. This is akin to the addum where those who are strongly homophobic my infact be homosexuals.

Black-market cosmetic surgeries hospitalize six N.J. women
By Rohan Mascarenhas/The Star-Ledger
March 07, 2010, 9:46PM
NEWARK -- Six women from the Essex County area who wanted fuller bottoms ended up in hospitals after receiving buttocks-enhancement injections containing the same material contractors use to caulk bathtubs, officials said.
The women checked into hospitals in the county after their procedures, apparently administered by unlicensed providers, went horribly wrong, state health officials said. The women underwent surgery and were given antibiotics. No arrests have been made.
Different from medical-grade silicone, the substance used in the botched procedures was believed to be a diluted version of nonmedical-grade silicone.

As authorities nationwide warn motorists of the dangers of driving while texting, Florida Keys law enforcement officers add a new caution: Don't try to shave your privates, either.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say a two-vehicle crash Tuesday at Mile Marker 21 on Cudjoe Key was caused by a 37-year-old woman driver who was shaving her bikini area while her ex-husband took the wheel from the passenger seat.
"She said she was meeting her boyfriend in Key West and wanted to be ready for the visit," Trooper Gary Dunick said. "If I wasn't there, I wouldn't have believed it. About 10 years ago I stopped a guy in the exact same spot ... who had three or four syringes sticking out of his arm. It was just surreal and I thought, 'Nothing will ever beat this.' Well, this takes it."
The best part is her ex being involved.

My tax-preparing buddy tells me that the rounding dealee is voluntary, but almost everyone does it (and the instructions allow it), BUT if you do file using the cents columns anywhere on the 1040 form, you have to be consistent and use it throughout the form - and IRS follows the same procedure when checking. But hey! At least they didn't spend $2.94 on a certified letter to collect that 4 cents - instead sending two $50 per hour employees to do the deed. Our taxdollars at work.

That's one suggestion the Pentagon has received from someone who noted, quite correctly, that a bear's sense of smell is much more powerful than a bloodhound's.
"Overnight, Parachute some bears into areas [bin Laden] might be," the innovator wrote. "Attempt to train bears to take off parachutes after landing, or use parachutes that self-destruct after landing."
The bears-in-the-air idea, and scores of others, came from people who clicked on the "contact us" button on the Defense Department's Web site, which allows the general public to ask questions or make suggestions. [...]
The Defense Department provided Stars and Stripes a sampling of some of the more bizarre feedback it gets through its Web site, www.defense.gov. The authors' names were withheld, but all spelling, grammar and paranoia are authentic.
"Would there be time to construct a Noah's Ark Biosphere in North America if there is an emerging Global War starting in the Middle East?" asked one concerned citizen. "I don't know ... I only know that I have worked on such a project for many years now."
The specifications for the recommended ark are outlined in the Bible, the writer noted, adding that it could preserve a specimen of the human population for up to 300 years.
"Then after the period of ‘Hibernation' people and materials would emerge to repopulate the Earth," the person wrote.
Another correspondent asked for help with some personal issues.
"I still have people torturing my pelvis and lungs with dispersed sound waves and my eye and stomach, hip, pelvic region with other types of sound waves," the person wrote. "When the secret service came out they had a letter all prepared by my mother to force me on disability and not let me live with her and try to leave me penniless and homeless again."
One writer let the Defense Department know of a dream something was about to happen. Likely on a Friday.
"I have no idea what this might be, do you?" the person asked.

Man uses penis to assault female police officer
Fined for assaul by Willy.
A YOB was fined £600 yesterday for assaulting a cop with his WILLY.
Marium Varinauskas, 28, tried to strike the WPC on the head with his manhood.
The officer had to duck to avoid being hit in the face by the standing Lithuanian as she sat on a couch. Officers were called to his Aberdeen flat in the early hours when his girlfriend complained he was drunk.
They arrived to find the self-employed engineer wearing just his pants, the city's sheriff court was told. Fiscal depute Elaine Lynch said Varinauskas then got to his feet over the female officer. She said: "The accused was standing over her exposing his penis and thrusting it in her face forcing her to take evasive action."
His lawyer John Hardie added: "He can't remember anything. But he accepts that if that's what the police say then that is what happened. He has never been so drunk before that day. He apologises profusely and is extremely embarrassed." Speaking after the attack, Varinauskas said: "I feel bad about it but it's difficult as I don't remember."
He was due to go on trial before admitting last November's attack.
A police spokesman said: "This was a distasteful experience for the officer."

Eating Brain to cure Epilepsy, But this man forgot that Traditional Chinese Medicine suggest eating Monkey-Brains... not Human
http://www.whatsonxiamen.com/news11038.html
Yunnan, China - A CHINESE cannibal is alleged to have killed an 11-year-old boy and eaten his BRAIN in order to cure his epilepsy.
Wang Chaoxu, of Qixian village, in Yunnan, south west China, is said to have believed an old wives' tale that eating a child's brain can cure fits.
Police said the boy Li Xuetang was found buried three miles away in a grain field in a neighbouring village.
The top of his head had been peeled back and part of his brain removed.
Heartbroken mum Yu Chaohu became anxious when her son disappeared late at night.
She said: "It was getting dark, but I couldn't find my son anywhere in the village.
"I even asked the village head to broadcast on the radio to ask my son to come back home for dinner."
A few hours later Li was found, after a villager Zhang Huansheng saw a man kneeling over him, and holding him by the neck.
The boy's mum was desperate to see her son but was told the body was too badly damaged.
Yu added: "I can't bear to think about what happened to him. I have nightmares thinking about it."
Wang Wenzhong, the village leader, found two blood stained rocks in the field and some fractured bones, before the boy's body was discovered buried nearby.
Wang Chaoxu was arrested and told police he believed eating the brain with earthworms and ants would cure his illness.
Wang said he was married to a nurse, but she left him because his illness meant he was unable to work.
It was claimed a three-year-old girl, who was reported missing on the same day, may also have become one of his victims.
The girl was found dead in public toilets with a knife cut to her head. Police are investigating whether the cases are linked.
