The Abbey has many advantages for the province it is built in. It produces income and adds to the happiness of the province. The only problem is that the Abbey makes the province a target for Viking raids, as they get the full 2000 florins for a successful attack, a large sum early in the game. Provinces with Abbeys must be protected well with ships or troops to fend off the Norsemen.


An early game gambit by the smaller factions is to voluntarily destroy the Abbey, grab the 1000 florin cash infusion, and take the eyes of the Vikings off their territory for a while. Appears to be somewhat effective, but also very cheesy.
