The Blacksmith is the first step towards a more organized military machine. With the Iron resource, the Blacksmith opens up the Armourer and Metalsmith building lines, which will give troops better equipment. The Blacksmith also allows the building of Spearmen (and later, Armoured Spearmen with the Master Blacksmith) which can become anchors in the army, freeing up native troops for more suitable flanking attacks.


The Mercians can also build Urban Militia from the Blacksmith, this gives them early armour piercing unit that combines nicely with Fyrdmen for pinning and flanking.
