The Master Blacksmith allows Armoured Spearmen to be built. These are the best spearmen in the game, and work really well anchoring the line. The Mercians can also train Militia Sergeants from the Master Blacksmith, giving them a more disposable armour piercing unit to complement the more expensive huscarles.
