Unit Description

Gallowglasses are available to Catholic factions from Ireland. Unlike most swords units, instead of shields they wield two-handed swords that give them an armour piercing attack. Combined with a devastating charge and good attack, this makes Gallowglasses excellent flanking units. Their defense is not as bad as most "barbarian" unprofessional swordsmen and they are Elite, so they will not die as quickly in melee. While they are capable on the front lines, their best use is charging pinned heavily armoured cavalry and infantry from the flanks or rear.

The biggest problem with Gallowglasses is spending the time and resources to conquer Ireland and build up the infrastructure to get them. Once done, it is a good idea to build religious structures to increase the morale of units recruited there, this will make the Gallowglasses more reliable. They are an excellent unit for desert campaigning due to their low armour value, so constructing Armourer line buildings in Ireland should depend on the need for desert troops.

Gallowglasses get a +1 valour bonus when trained in Ireland, and since this is the only province where they are available, all Gallowglass units start out with valour 1.
