Unit Description
Mounted Crossbowmen are available to the Burgundians, Holy Roman Empire, Hungarians, Italians, Novgorod, Poles, Russians, and Swiss. They are available in all eras, giving these factions access to crossbows before the High period arrives. Their speed can be used to harass infantry and cavalry alike, but their missiles are best used on heavily armoured units like knights. Due to their long reload times, Mounted Crossbowmen cannot effectively pull off the usual fire and move harassment that mounted bowmen can, but they can exploit their firing cycle mechanics (triggered missiles) to move close, shoot immediately, and then pull back a safe distance to begin reloading. These hit-and-run tactics take skill and timing, but allow Mounted Crossbowmen to target heavy, expensive units at low risk. Once their bolts are expended, Mounted Crossbowmen can be used to chase down routing units, but they cannot be relied on for much more than that.
In siege battles, Mounted Crossbowmen may be dismounted for Crossbowmen.

Mounted Crossbowmen have the same range as most archers, but reload much slower and are a bigger target, so it is not advisable to get into a shooting match with them. Crossbows are more effective against armoured units, and can cause a great amount of damage to heavy infantry and cavalry. Crossbows will suffer in rainy weather, just like normal archer units.
