Unit Description
Janissary Heavy Infantry is arguably the best infantry unit in the main campaign. They are Elite, Disciplined, and have high morale, so they are very dependable in combat. The are faster than most infantry, making them suitable for quick flanking maneuvers. They do not have much armour, but this allows them to fight in desert climates without penalty, and they also have a large shield for missile protection (not used in melee), something none of the other polearm units have. Their high attack value, combined with the armour piercing and anti-cavalry bonuses of their polearms, allows them to cut through heavily armoured cavalry and infantry with ease.
Janissary troops require the Military Academy building, which itself requires the unique Grand Mosque (for the Turks), meaning that only one province will be capable of producing them. Janissary Heavy Infantry will start with a +1 valour bonus if recruited in Bulgaria, while Janissary Archers start with a +1 valour bonus if recruited in Georgia. So careful planning should be done to build the Grand Mosque in one of these two provinces.
