Unit Description
Crossbowmen are the first armour-piercing missile units available to most factions. Their fire rate is slow, but prolonged and concentrated fire can decimate even heavily armoured units. They should be kept out of combat however, unless used as a last resort.
Crossbowmen are not available until the High period. Arbalesters also become available at this time (from the Bowyer's Guild), which means that Crossbowmen are pretty much obsolete as soon as they appear. Arbalesters are better all around for a little more cost, and should be taken instead of Crossbowmen unless necessary.

Crossbowmen have the same range as most archers, but reload much slower, so it is not advisable to get into a shooting match with them. Crossbows are more effective against armoured units, and can cause a great amount of damage to heavy infantry and cavalry. Crossbows will suffer in rainy weather, just like normal archer units.
