Unit Description
Longbowmen are available to the English once the High period arrives. They give the English another option for armour piercing missile troops, allowing them to choose between the heavy damage of Crossbowmen and Arbalesters, or the high fire rate of the Longbowmen. They should be kept out of melee combat, but can do fairly well when pressed. They have good attack and morale, they carry small shields, and their melee attack is also armour piercing, but their low defense means they will suffer casualties.
Longbowmen should be deployed in two rows for maximum effectiveness. They start battles in Skirmish mode, but this cannot always be trusted to keep them out of trouble. For defensive battles, they work well positioned on a hill behind spear or other melee units, allowing them to fire over the heads of their protectors into the oncoming enemy troops.
Longbowmen recruited in Wales receive a +1 bonus to valour.

The Longbow has a longer range than the standard bow, and reduces the effectiveness of the target's armour by half. Volleys from crossbows and arbalests are more lethal, but the Longbowmen can fire at almost 4 times their rate. This allows them to shower enemy formations with many shots in a short period of time. Archer effectiveness will suffer in rainy weather.
