Unit Description
Kataphraktoi are available to the Byzantines. They are Elite like knights, but are also Disciplined which makes them easy to control. Kataphraktoi are some of the best heavy cavalry available early on in the game, but later on in the campaign they become outdated.
Kataphraktoi tactics are the same as most Knight and heavy cavalry units: flank the enemy, charge them in the rear, repeat as necessary. Avoid frontal charges into spear and pike units, avoid polearm units unless an instant rout is assured, and avoid camels. Due to their slow speed, pulling them out of melee will be more difficult, it might be better to just leave them in combat and rely on their heavy armour to protect them.
Kataphraktoi serve as the royal bodyguard units for the Byzantines. The faction leader and heirs will appear on the campaign map leading Kataphraktoi units.
In siege battles, Kataphraktoi may be dismounted for Byzantine Infantry.
Kataphraktoi recruited in Constantinople gain a +1 bonus to valour.
